Opis:
The author is reconstructing religious doctrines of salvation in Polish neopagan movements. Conclusions were drawn on the base analysis of religious declarations of different groups and the questionnaire survey. Neopagan texts put emphasis on the individual development made by members of groups, according to their own Slavic character. The role of self-sacrifice of individual is minimized. The questionnaire survey is showing that neopagans are rejecting the need of salvation. They understand salvation as the Christian idea, alien to the neopaganism. Subjects put emphasis on achieving the freedom by the individual member. For them most important goal of life is freedom and the independence.

Opis:
The use of audiovisual recording devices is changing the practice of qualitative research. Extensive corpus of data can be generated in (shortterm) focussed fieldwork. Nevertheless, methods to analyse video data are still in an experimental stage. This article explores the benefits and limitations of applying sociolinguistic genre analysis to audio-visual data. This is illustrated with a case study, based on the videotaped »deep-trance vision« of a New Religious Movement’s spiritual leader, which is one the most famous contemporary religious visionaries in Germany. The analysis aims to reconstruct the construction of this religious experience of transcendence from the perspective of its followers. We will examine three different levels of communication (a) the inner context, exploring the textual, gestural, mimical and prosodic aspects, (b) the intermediate level where the focus lies on the setting and decorum, and finally (c) the outer context, focussing on the social embedding of this form of »transcendent« communication and its filmic presentation. The article closes with a reflection on the need to combine hermeneutic analysis of case studies based on textual analysis with ethnographic field data and observation to contextualise its interpretation.

The paper deals with actual problem of current stage of religious sphere’s development – the emergence and vigorous activity of movements and organizations that can be characterized as quasi-religious. We research the characteristics of quasi-religions as the separate phenomena that operate mainly in the form of secular organizations and that try to transform the identity of its members in their desired direction. It is emphasized that the concepts of quasi-religious and pseudo-religious beliefs are not identical and require of separate religious studies research. But it can be considered that common to both phenomena is only their arising at the boundaries between sacred and secular. The paper presents a review of quasi-religious concepts – from Tillich to Greil, as well as a description of quasi-religious practices and quasi-religious movements.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to show the communication between the health promoting religious movements and the Japanese state and society in the Shōwa period. Following the American Occupation, the communication originating from Noguchi’s life-health movement proved to help stabilize the social health system in Japan. In the early Shōwa period many groups within Japanese society – from the royal family and the aristocrats to the common citizens – kept themselves in good health through implementing specific reijutsu techniques. The name reijutsu stands for the pro-health/religious movement started by Kuwabara Toshirō (1873-1906), the author of Seishin Reidō (The Excellent Work of the Mind, 1903), which encompassed Western writings on Theosophy, chiromancy, osteopathy and traditional Japanese religious pro-health techniques like shugendō or anma massage. Many schools of reijutsu were at the peak of their popularity in the 1920’s. One of them, taireidō of Tanaka Morihei (1884–1928), also gained popularity in China becoming the foundation for contemporary Chinese qigong breathing exercises. The form that won popularity in the West, due to Japanese emigrants to Hawaii, was reiki. In the 1930’s Mitsui Kōshi (1883–1953) developed reijutsu into a system combining politics and Japanese traditional waka poetry, a system that was aimed at the unity of a human being with the emperor and the universe. As for Mitsui, he became a prominent political figure until 1945. Later the reijutsu movement failed to find continuators. The passing away of charismatic leaders resolved in the dissolution of the reijutsu societies. The exceptions were the reiki movement – which gained global popularity and was subsequently reintroduced to Japan in the 1980’s, and the Noguchi Seitai (Noguchi’s technique) movement. Noguchi Seitai is a pro-health/religious movement founded in Tokyo in 1927 by Noguchi Haruchika (1911–1976). The movement functioned at first as a psychotherapy group, a modification of reijutsu. In the year 1942 the movement was examined by the Ministry of Health committee for osteopathic practices. It established its legal standing as a foundation and was registered as the Seitai Kyōkai (Seitai Association) in 1956. Nowadays it is a public profit organization. The presidents of the organization are former members of the aristocracy or former prime ministers, maintaining a quality and high profile for all of Japanese society. Starting from the 1980’s the organization obtained major support from the young population, since they saw it as a leading force within the Japanese New Age movement. Currently the Association claims around 80 thousand active members, and it is believed the number of people practicing privately, though they do not belong to the organization, is ten times greater. Noguchi Seitai is a movement that is still active today due to excellent communication between the movement and the Japanese state and society established in the Shōwa period. Just as in the case of other reijutsu forms, Noguchi’s transmission is characterized by specific techniques involving physical practices, studying difficult philosophical concepts and painstaking self-development, which has at times caused tension in dealings with police and other state institutions. However, Noguchi Seitai, due to the communication with the state as well as the citizens established during the occupation period, made it so that after the year 1953, the movement became a so called “stabilizing dysfunction” from the sociological perspective, and took on the role of supplementing the Japanese social health system.

The paper presents two main topics related to changes in religious structure of the Polish society between 1989–2013: administrative and legal registration procedures for churches and religious associations, which are a consequence of religious policy of the state, and a statistically documented description of transformation of the religious structure of the Polish society during the last twenty five years. Analysis of official documents shows that the systematic change in Poland led to liberalization of religious law and introduction of many new regulations concerning churches and religious organizations, which led to significant religious revival in its institutional dimension.

Opis:
Today, academic studies on religions are dominated by sociology, the science of religion, and the history of religion. Not many researchers are philosophers. One can therefore say that philosophy is on the periphery of those studies. However, to understand religions, even the most precise descriptions of particular communities, their functioning, and their impact on individuals and society, are not enough. In order to learn why people join them, it is also necessary to examine their doctrines. Although theologians have long studied them, their research has met with serious accusations: theology was deemed unscientific, and theologians – not impartial. On the other hand, a philosopher can study religious doctrines without fear of such charges, as philosophy limits itself to rational considerations, does not refer to revealed truths, and does not proclaim any concept of salvation. In this text, I show what results the philosophical research of religious doctrines leadsto, taking as an example doctrines of religious movements, which – in the opinion of their creators – constitute an alternative to christianity. With the help of philosophy, the criteria for distinguishing religion/christianity from a religious movement can be narrowed down to the inconsistencies in the doctrines of these movements and their general, irrational nature. This can be verified by pointing out serious errors, which are mostly the result of the founders’ own interpretation of biblical texts.

W XXI wieku wbrew dziewiętnastowiecznemu przeświadczeniu, że wraz z postępem nauki i rozwojem świeckich ideologii religia zaniknie, ona nadal trwa i przeżywa swoisty renesans. Stare i nowe odsłony religii i duchowości, trudne do zliczenia i imiennego nazwania, dowodzą niezmienności natury ludzkiej w dążeniu do rozpoznania i zaspokojenia duchowej wrażliwości.
Each religion has its own vision of God/gods and an original interpretation of the truths of faith, which distinguishes it from other religious systems or specific religions. A religious panorama is a kaleidoscope of changing forms that share, connect, transform and reappear, constantly competing with each other. In the twenty-first century, contrary to the nineteenth-century conviction that religion will disappear with the progress of science and the development of secular ideologies, it is still going on and is experiencing a specific renaissance. In different parts of the world new movements of religious innovations are emerging. In Poland, a measurable testimony to the gradually growing religious scene is the register of churches and other religious associations, which is being extended from year to year. Old and new versions of religion and spirituality, difficult to count and name by name, prove the unchangeability of human nature in the pursuit of recognition and satisfaction of spiritual sensitivity.

The Focolari movement – one of the largest, dynamically developed, international, Catholic movements of revitalization – was in the period of years (1995-2000) the subject matter of research. The research made use of a number of qualitative methods. Thus the process of creating a collective identity was reconstructed. Moreover, the organizational actions were shown as regards the presentation and promotion of the specific appeal to convert, and its related patterns of involvement and social identities. The Focolari movement was established as a result of individual quest after an alternative form of religious commitment within the Catholic Church. This individual quest was then transformed into a collective quest. The process of initial conversion of a fellowship had brought about foundations for the collective identity and a common mission of the movement. Under the leadership of a charismatic leader it was developed and referred to the post-conciliar reforms of Catholicism and the problems of modern societies. By virtue of an effective organization, with the use of modern means of communication, the movement extends its appeal for a multicultural, interfaith, world-view dialogue, and cooperation in the private and public spheres. It disseminates also alternative patterns of religious and lay social identities, which supplement of the offer of conventional religious and lay institutions.

Brahma Kumaris to ruch marginalny, wypracowane jednak tutaj narzędzia analizy renegocjacji relacji rodzinnych i społecznych mogą posłużyć do badania innych grup kobiecych.
In the paper, I explore the issue of female spiritual agency through ethnographic fieldwork conducted among Polish converts from Catholicism to a female dominated, Hindu rooted new religious movement, the Brahma Kumaris. My data show that reasons of conversion include dissatisfaction of gender relations. However, instead of becoming feminists, the women at the center of my research commit to strict ascetic discipline. The changes that this commitment entails totally reorganize their relations within their families and their social lives. Drawing on contemporary developments in anthropological approaches to agency, I focus on theorizing those elements of agency and identity that go beyond liberal feminist concepts of women’s emancipation. The Brahma Kumaris is a marginal group, but the general pattern of analysis of renegotiation of family life and relations beyond the private sphere may apply to other women’s groups.

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how certain religious perspectives present nuances between the concepts of creation and evolution. Although public debate characterizes them as polarized concepts, it is important to understand how contemporary religious expressions resignify them and create arrangements in which biological evolution and creation by the intervention of higher beings are presented in a continuum. It begins with a brief introduction on the relations and reframing of Science concepts in the New Religious Movements along with New Age thinking. Then we have two examples which allows us to analyze this evolution-creation synthesis. First, I will present a South American New Religious Movement that promotes bricolage between the New Age, Roman Catholicism and contacts with extraterrestrials. Then, I will analyze the thoughts of a Brazilian medium who disseminates lectures along with the channeling of ETs in videos on the internet, mixing the elements of ufology with cosmologies of Brazilian religions such as Kardecist spiritism and Umbanda. These two examples share the idea of the intervention of extraterrestrial or superior beings in human evolution, thus, articulating the concepts of evolution and creation. Therefore, in these arrangements it is possible to observe an inseparability between spiritual and material, evolution and creation or biological and spiritual evolution.

There are also new religious movements, whose founders claim to have contact with aliens. Claude Vorilhon – Raël proclaims to the humanity the teachings of Elohim. According to him, there is no God, no soul and no life after death. The extraterrestrials are the creators of humanity, thanks to them man can avoid the ultimate destruction: he can be cloned or his consciousness will “live” in the virtual world. The Raelians promote the idea that Jesus is not the Son of God, he did not perform miracles and did not rise from the dead. He was only a prophet who hypnotized people. His father was an alien Yahweh, and Raël is his brother. The article presents information about the doctrine and worship of the Raelians. It shows who, according to the followers of the movement, was Jesus and what mission he was to fulfill. Excerpts of translations and interpretations of the Bible propagated by the Raelian Movement are also presented.
