Opis:
This article presents the image of a spiritual wedding between soul-Bride and Divine Bridegroom which is featured in anonymous meditations from the XVII century. They are bunched in manuscript form and stored in the archives of the Sisters of St. Norbert’s Order in Cracow. Therefore, it is proper to make the thesis that the author of this manuscript belonged to this abbey. The primary origin of these meditations is The Song of Songs which shows the special way mystics merge with God. This article also reveals meditations about ”spiritual marriage” that contain visible influences of the Fathers of Church and Żywoty świętych of Piotr Skarga. All these influences are evident not only about the authoress erudition but most of all about her need of strong effect, by means of suggestive images of figures, for the attitude of practitioners of meditations. With the aid of the idea of mutual love between Divine Bridegroom and human being-Bride, meditations were presented standing before God demanding from man spiritual transformation and pose of the human being who desires to internally change yourself for Him.

The article compares Polish and Anglophone literary-theoretical approaches to religious poetry. It demonstrates that some common tendencies to be found in Polish studies and in English scholarship include drawing on a single religious tradition (Christian, official), focusing on the author and their religious experience, and narrow and/or prescriptive approaches that are sometimes more theological than literary-theoretical in nature. The survey suggests that the most prominent difference is that Polish criticism has produced a long-standing tradition of literary-theoretical studies that develop on or polemicize with each other in an attempt to describe and systematize the field of the intersections of poetry and religion and propose literary methodologies for studying religious poetry, while Anglophone studies do not enter into this kind of dialogue. The Polish studies, if popularized, could help reduce the theoretical and methodological deficit in Anglophone scholarship on the subject.

  The present issue of our journal is devoted to Old Polish and Enlightenment religious literature as well as themes and conventions of religious literature. The articles show a rich tradition of such works. The broad scope of topics demonstrates diverse literary research. The articles are devoted to defining such terms as "religious literature" and "religious poet", as well as to translations and biblical inspirations, prayers and meditations, monastic authors and their works, hymnals, sermons and the rhetoric, the matter of faith and reason, and a Sarmatian religion. The present issue of "Tematy i Konteksty" ("Themes and Contexts") also includes the papers devoted to interpretation of 19th century literature, reviews, reports and announcements. The authors of studies are scholars from a range of academic institutions in Poland.

The article first gives a short presentation of Angelus Silesius (1624-1677) or, Johannes Scheffler, and then more thoroughly analyses the first part of his work entitled Idea causarum fundatarum, transeundi a Lutheranis ad Ecclesiam Catholicam; comprehensarum Illationibus duabus which has been forgotten today. The baroque writer used exclusively brief statements which confirm the truth of the Roman faith and simultaneously debunk arguments in favor of Protestant religion. Above all his work was supposed to provide polemical ammunition for the supporters of the Roman Catholic Church and to justify discontinuing relations with Protestantism. In order to achieve this purpose, the writer enumerated and discussed arguments related to the most important arguable theological issues, such as the apostolic succession, miracles, attitude to God’s Word, religious life, celibacy, the figure of Luther and his adherents, etc.

This article presents the results of academic research conducted by a group of scholars in the years 2012–2016 on Karaim manuscripts owned by Polish individuals. The research was financed by the NationalScience Centre (Poland) (research project nr.: 2011/03/D/HS2/00618). The article provides a concise yet exhaustive description of the privately owned printed and handwritten materials and presents a great deal ofhitherto unknown scientific data. The materials stored in private archives open up new perspectives on Karaim studies. They will undoubtedly serve as an important starting point for future research – primarilyfor historians and linguists, but also for those conducting literary, cultural, and religious studies.

The article is based on the analysis of the way that didacticism works in the “Christian garden” (“Wirydarz krześcijański”) by Jakub Lubelczyk (1530–1563). The paper focuses primarily on the characteristics of the main character (Krześcijanin) and his spiritual transformation, which is the result of a conversation with the guides. The next stages of the Krześcijanin development have shown the persuasion, which was used by the author through deliberative rhetoric (genus deliberativum), encouraging (suasio), and discouraging (dissuasio) statements. Lubelczyk articulates his arguments based on the Holy Bible, moral guidelines and ideas created from a perspective of the Reformation movement. “Christian garden” was juxtaposed with the selected literary works of Mikołaj Rej, which show that the rhetorical measures used by Lubelczyk for didactic purposes were also used by other artists.

The paper presents the only collection of 51 works of Wacław Potocki. These are the Pious Songs of 1678. The author analyzes the presence of biblical inspiration in those lyrics which mostly refer by their titles to concrete parts of the Gospel, events and parables. The biblical word is mixed here with the everyday Sarmatian language, the saint figures are shown among the realities of the 17th century; the lyrical subject is endowed with a biographic experience of the poet himself and becomes a partner of the evangelical heroes. One of the dominating and obsessively recurrent motifs is the almost physically experience "kinship" between man and the incarnate God who had thus sanctified manhood and corporeity itself.

The starting point in the article is an absence of studies which show the realizations of the military-erotic symbols in religious literature that is associated with the emblem tradition. The discussed works – prayer books by Andrzej Gabriel Kasperowicz; anonymous Atak Niebieskiej Twierdzy… [The attack of the Heavens… or The attack into Fortress of Heavens…] and Wojsko serdecznych afektów… [The army of heartfelt affections…] by Hieronim Falęcki – retain high formal and semantic discipline; as a result, they are examples of interesting phenomena of Baroque culture. In the first part of her article Iwona Słomak presents three prayer books in which the concept is based on analogy with the organization of the army of Christ. In the second part she shows the book in which the theme of war connects with the issue of „holy erotica”. In part three she discusses a print whose composition refers to the structure of the military detachments. It is conceived as a collection of „affections” whose task is „to conquer” heaven and the hearts of readers. Characteristically, the formula of the discussed books will be understandable only if we reconstruct their reference to the popular allegorical images (we find them in the collections of emblems, in many treatises on religious themes or in descriptions of the great ceremonies of that era); therefore, it is necessary to take into account the emblematic model that clearly influenced their final shape.

The term keyword, created in 1954 by Pierre Guiraud, is also used in con¬temporary linguistics to describe words that, because of their frequency of occurrence, are characteristic of a particular text, the genre of a text or the writer‘s style. The indication of keywords defined in this way in Pro¬testant funeral sermons, which are one of the most representative genres of German moralizing literature of the 16th and 17th centuries, is difficult and often does not provide an answer to the question of what is referred to in a given text. Based on the analysis of a sermon written by Johannes Bugenhagen on the death of Martin Luther (1546), the paper attempts to develop criteria for the selection of keywords in this genre of texts.

Trylogia powieściowa pt. Savonarola Marii Gertrudy Skórzewskiej, niepokalanki z Jazłowca, jest jedyną w literaturze polskiej powieścią o Giròlamo Savonaroli, teologu, kaznodziei, pisarzu religijnym. Podjęta w artykule analiza powieściowej narracji, wyłoniła trzy tekstowe kategorie, a mianowicie: wzniosłość, uobecnienie i prawdziwość jako „prawdę artystyczną”. W takim też horyzoncie został omówiony temat, którym jest obraz kultury Florencji z przełomu XV i XVI w., jej środowiska intelektualnego i artystycznego. Rozważając zawartą w powieści ideę piękna, łączonego z dobrem i prawdą, autorka artykułu omawia dwa kręgi zagadnień, którymi są: 1. konfrontacja dwóch epok jako dwóch formacji moralno-estetycznych, średniowiecza i renesansu, którym odpowiada bądź religijny (Boga jako istoty sprawczej, doskonałości dzieł Bożych), bądź świecki sposób pojmowania dzieła stworzenia; 2. ukierunkowanie narracji na religijnie pojmowaną ideę arcydzieła i na jej różnorakie konkretne realizacje; one to potwierdzają wartość kultury, sztuki i literatury, pozostającej w twórczej relacji do Biblii i wybitnej europejskiej tradycji intelektualnej.
The novel trilogy Savonarola by Maria Gertruda Skórzewska, the Immaculate Virgin from Jazłowiec, is the only novel in the Polish literature about Giròlamo Savonarola, a theologian, preacher and religious writer. The analysis of the novel’s narrative undertaken in the article has identified three textual categories, namely: sublimity, presence and truth as “artistic truth”. In this horizon was discussed the topic of the image of the culture of Florence at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries as well as its intellectual and artistic environment. Considering the idea of beauty contained in the novel, combined with good and truth, the author of the article discusses two circles of issues: 1. confrontation of two epochs as two moral and aesthetic formations i.e. the Middle Ages and the Renaissance which correspond to either religious (God as the creative force, perfection of the works of God), or a secular way of understanding the work of creation; 2. orienting the narrative on the religiously conceived idea of a masterpiece and its various specific implementations; they confirm the value of culture, art and literature remaining in a creative relation to the Bible and an outstanding European intellectual tradition.

Niniejszy szkic jest wprowadzeniem w badania religijnej literatury użytkowej, jaka istniała w XIX wieku na ziemiach polskich. Jak dotąd nie prowadzono systematycznych badań w tym zakresie, a znane publikacje dotyczą jednostkowych zjawisk i tekstów. Najpierw wprowadzam podstawowe pojęcia i rozróżnienia terminologiczne, za pomocą których definiowany jest materiał badawczy. W dalszej części wskazuję na źródła i cele użytkowej literatury religijnej, omawiam podstawowe cechy i formy religijnej literatury użytkowej. Charakteryzuję i dokonuję wstępnej typologizacji druków religijnych, w których publikowana była przedmiotowa literatura religijna.
This draft is an introduction to the research of the utility religious literature in 19th century. Up to now there have been no systematical reseach in this domain. Publictions within this scope are limited to the isolated phenomenons and texts. In the first place I introduce basic terminological concepts, that are useful to define research material. Further I determine the sources and purposes of the utility religious literature and describe its essential features. I characterise and typologize the utility religious literature publications.

  The article is devoted to the Polish religious printed matter from the 17th and 18th centuries (individual works and collections of texts), which shares the “clock” metaphor. The author focuses on Catholic and Arian literature, independent works and short forms, both poetry and prose. The texts analyzed are mostly pieces of advice and warnings helpful in the Christian life, centred around the Passion and funerals. The article presents the content, composition and function of these works, as well as the dual use of the clock theme in them: as an object which awakens and which measures time. The genological aspects of these works are also considered.

De partu Virginis (1526) by Jacopo Sannazaro served an inspiration to many authors writing about the Annunciation. One of them, Grzegorz Czeradzki, the author of Rytmy o porodzeniu przenaczystszym Bogarodzice Panny Maryjej, paraphrased the first part of the Italian poem. Similarly as Sannazaro, he described the route that the angel Gabriel took to visit the Blessed Virgin Mary. However, like in the case of many other writers who explored this theme, his description was short and lacked details. Two baroque authors, Andrzej Dębołęcki and Aleksander Obodziński, expanded on the motif. The latter plagiarized the work of the former who described the geographical names of specific places in order to delineate the angel’s route. Neither of them indicated where they had learnt these geographical details from. The sources of this information can only be identified on the basis of the writers’ poetic inspirations.

Różne ćwiczenia lubo nauki duchowne i wykłady przez Wielebnego Ojca Stefana od świętej Teresy […], napisane (Archiwum Biblioteki Sióstr Karmelitanek Bosych w Krakowie, rkps nr 62, karty 44r-47v). Ów „wykład” skierowany był najpewniej do sióstr karmelitanek bosych. Podejmuje zagadnienia natury mistycznej, traktuje o sposobach zamieszkiwania Boga w człowieku. W tekście Kucharskiego metafora jest chyba najważniejszym i najczęściej używanym środkiem literackiego przekazu. Nacechowana symbolicznie miejska przestrzeń posłużyła autorowi jako swoista alegoria, wyrażająca poglądy antropologiczne i teologiczne.
Jerusalem, the City of the Great King is one of the texts by Stefan (in point of fact: Hieronim) Kucharski (1595-1653). The work has been preserved at least in two versions: they are kept in the so called Lublin Cartulary (The Archive of the Polish Province of the Discalced Carmelites, manuscript nr 246, pp. 287-302) and in the collection entitled Various exercises or spiritual lessons and lectures written by the Reverend Father Stefan of St Theresa (The Archive of the Library of Discalced Carmelite Sisters in Krakow, manuscript nr 62, charts 44r-47v). The “lecture” most probably directed to Discalced Carmelite sisters, tackles the issues of a mystical nature and treats about the ways, in which God lives in a man. In Kucharski's text the metaphor is the most important and most often used means of expression. The urban space, characterized by symbols is used by the author as a peculiar allegory expressing his anthropological and theological views.
