Aim. In this study, the challenges encountered during the introduction of religious education in Turkey are examined within the scope of their intended solutions. Methods. In this study, challenges encountered in the implementation of religious education in Turkey are being discussed in a descriptive manner. Literature scanning and interpretation methods, one of the qualitative research methods, were used in the study.  Results. Religious education in Turkey is both maintained within the formal education system and the non-formal education system. Formal education is provided in public schools run by the Ministry of National Education [MNE]. Primary, secondary and high school education is compulsory for all students. There are Imam Hatip Schools that were opened to provide religious education at secondary and high school level. There are also two hours of compulsory religious education per week in other schools. Non-formal religious education is provided only by the Presidency of Religious Affairs [PRA]. This training is given to people of all ages. For this purpose, the PRA opens several courses. Conclusions. In this study, challenges encountered related to religious education in Turkey are being discussed in two main areas: Challenges in formal education are examined under seven subtitles. Challenges in non-formal education are examined under eight subtitles. Originality. This study is an original study in terms of addressing the challenges in formal and non-formal religious education together. In addition, the possibility of making a collective examination of challenges related to religious education in Turkey would be valuable to the reader.

Aim. The aim of the article is to identify opportunities for religious education in the field of promoting the values of sustainable development. By identifying key concepts, define options for future strategies in the implementation of sustainable development values in school teaching of religious education. Methods. The starting point is the analysis of the current religious education curriculum, which governs the teaching of religious education and is approved by both state and church authority. Based on the analysis, identify strengths and weaknesses and define potential areas within the curriculum where sustainability values can be applied. Results. The values of sustainable development and Christian values are based on a common anthropological platform, which is based on the dignity of the human person. Religious education should also be based on this platform. Conclusion. In order to apply the values of sustainable development, it is necessary to adjust the current curriculum in terms of content and scope of topics. At the same time, it is necessary to innovate in the way of training future teachers. The goal of innovations is the internalization of sustainability values within the value orientation of both teachers and students. Cognitive value. Christian values and the values of sustainable development are not in conflict. The content of the religious education curriculum has the potential to innovate its content to meet the current requirements of the United Nations (UN) agenda as well as the teachings of the Magisterium.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE:The aim of the paper is to go into some questionable matters pertaining to “Bildung” and especially religious “Bildung”, and question their political implications.  THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODOLOGY:Developments in society, especially oeconomical developments have a great influence to the area of “Bildung” as well as to the area of religious “Bildung”. Current concepts should be analysed. Reflections in philosophy of education and in religious education help to work out the failure of current developments.  THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION:The paper starts with the question about how the concept of “Bildung” occurs in current discourses. Afterwards alternative models of “Bildung” and religious “Bildung” are discussed. It is then put into questions which intentions and implications prevailing concepts contain, who and what they disregard and how they collaborate towards the reproduction of social injustice and processes of exclusion. RESEARCH RESULTS:Religious “Bildung” as a part of general education is effected by societal developments und has to be aware of that. Presuppositions of Religious Education and Didactics of Religion has to scrutinize themselves if and in what way they do possibly promote injustice and which conclusions for future concepts could be drawn. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS:“Bildung”, especially religious “Bildung” are challenged by societal developments, e.g. migration, but should not just adapt to political or oeconomical desires. Rather they should not waive for their normative requirements so that they can question for social injustice in the societal developments as well as in their own concepts.

He claims that we must account for human nature as it is and educate the human person accordingly. He focuses on six key areas which need further exploration for the renewal of religious education: (1) religious education and the human person, (2) religious education for the body, (3) religious education for the heart, (4) religious education for the mind, (5) religious education and moral formation, and (6) the nature of faith.

Multiculturalism and the new multi religious social realities are becoming dominant dimensions of today’s world. The huge changes in the social tissue of those societies, which up to now had an established dominant culture and religious affiliation, made them now face more than the effects of migrant flows, which inevitably causes confrontations of cultures and believes. The clash of civilizations, which have been so accurately predicted, took different forms of confrontation by giving floor to extremism into its organized form: an explosion of terrorism. By considering the strong connections between poverty and lack of education as an extremism cradle, many researchers consider the inclusion of the subjects related to the history and culture of religions as a strategy to reduce cultural and religious conflict as well as extremist behavior and the bases of terrorism, by increasing information and knowledge about religion starting from early teen years. Albania, a country known for its religious tolerance, is one of those countries which’ decision makers in education actually share this point of view and is going to start a project by including a module of limited hours of teaching in medium and high school students. The paper makes an analysis of the potential effects this might have considering its application related to the initial purposes of the project, by introducing the case of Italy and its strategy of religious education over the years as a comparative tool in order to analyze and predict the potential outcomes of this intent, by considering the national background of Albania and some specific learning traits and outcomes on such topics related to age and cultural set up.

Faith institutions play a vital role in shaping social structure, social capital and social cohesion. Both religious and citizenship education can contribute to making good citizens. The latter is more political oriented, while the former is focused on faith, spirituality and morality. The English model of religious education is oriented towards a multi-faith dialogue, without the aspects of worship and confession. The phenomenological approach assures that every child, regardless of their religious background, is obligated to attend religious education. Today, the UK is facing many challenges, including secularization and cultural differentiation of the society. Thus, the educational institutions revise curricula and aims of learning. The aim of the paper is to present and analyze the main premises of educational policy in the context of religious education in public schools in England. I will also attempt to reconstruct the social and political ongoing debate on the aims of RE.

The nature of religious education in Norwegian schools has been conditioned by the relationship between the state and the church. Hence the question: “Does Norway guarantee freedom of thought, belief and religion?” The main aim of the paper is to analyze the changes in the relationships between the state and the church, the state and religion as well as the location of Religious Education in Norwegian schools in the historical, juridical, social, and political context. The aims and scopes of religious education together with curricula in the comprehensive schools seem to be exceptional among European states. The social changes, including immigration from states with a different cultural background, and the rise of the humanities impact the changes in Norway and the Norwegian Church.

The purpose of the paper is to identify and analyse problems reported by non-religious parents. These parents are subjects of the education process whose children attend Polish educational (usually public) institutions, in which religion is one of the elements of the curriculum. The study is guided by the assumption that such a situation may lead to various tensions and conflicts, the expression of which can be found on the Internet as a space for communication and search for solutions. The research presented in this paper is of an exploratory nature. It includes content analysis of posts posted on one of the Facebook social networking groups. Analysed statements of non-religious parents indicate that pre-schools and primary schools are to a large extent institutions strongly connected with declared religious values, which also leads to a negative perception of non-religious parents and their children.

In the presented article we undertake a polemic against the text of Andrzej Potocki Katecheza w szkole lekcją dialogu (Religious education at school – a lesson of dialogue). Taking advantage of the quarterly Teraźniejszość – Człowiek – Edukacja we start a discussion about the assumed and real functions of religious education in the context of the democracy of the school culture and in general in the context of democratic transformations which we are experiencing, the more so as we cannot agree with some interpretation of our text. Our polemic has two main directions: 1. A school lesson of religious education – similarly to what A. Potocki thinks – is a privileged place of a dialogue, particularly in the area of institutionalised education, but – according to us – for other reasons than our polemicist thinks. What we mean is that a lesson of religious education has much less prestige than – being extreme – the subjects that are covered with obligatory external examinations. 2. We locate ourselves in the area of pedagogical culture studies (i.e. in the area of cultural sciences) and philosophy of education (i.e. in the area of philosophy) and A. Potocki adds theological arguments to his reasoning. It is here where the basic and general difference between ours and A. Potocki’s argument is – we methodologically put ourselves in astonishment and the theoreticians of religious education do not cover the reasons that flow from the revelation.

Opis:
The theory of religious education holds a very important place in the Polish catechetics. It is continuously enriched with new issues, determined by the social and educational situation, that are significant from the point of view of practice. Some of them are integrally interwoven with pedagogy. Such issues include analyses related to the processes of communication between the religious education teacher and the students or to developing a dialogue approach in the participants of the religious education classes. The religious education publications dealing with the above-mentioned problems do not directly include the category of dialogue pedagogy. However, several issues can be perceived as referring to the role of the dialogue understood as the approach and the method in teaching religious instruction. Additionally, the methods of conducting a dialogue between the religious education teacher and the students are repeatedly described. Their analysis leads to the conclusion that issues in the scope of dialogue pedagogy occupy an important place in the theory of religious instruction, since they refer to various dimensions of didactic and educating activity of the religious education instructor and the students. Nevertheless, they require detailed empirical research to determine the (un)usual significance of dialogue pedagogy in practice – in educational interactions between religious education teachers and students.

According to official data, currently there are over two million Polish emigrants. Several hundred thousand of them live in Great Britain. Many studies and publications have been devoted to Polish emigration, but there have been none focussing on their religious life or Christian education and formation. To fill the gap, for the first time, empirical research has been carried out among Polish priests working with Polish emigrants in England and Wales. The survey concerned preparations for receiving the Sacraments organised by parishes of the Polish Catholic Mission established in that area. The survey tool in the form of a questionnaire was developed by academics from the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. The results obtained facilitated the determination of the organisational framework, topics, forms and methods of Catholic sacramental formation for Polish emigrants. This paper presents and analyses the results of the survey concerning the preparations of Polish children for their first Confession and Holy Communion, and the preparations of young people for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Furthermore, an attempt has been made at determining the major challenges faced by religious education and formation for Polish emigrants living in England and Wales, and the areas requiring further investigation have been identified.

A person is responsible for the implementation of values and at the same time is responsible for treating himself/herself as a value. A human person is capable of self-determination, because s/he can act deliberately. Through self-reflection, a person can choose a course of action for himself/herself and assert “inner self” to the outside world through their choices. The person is also responsible to himself/herself for self-fulfillment. It’s the fulfillment of a person that leads to happiness, which consists in the realization of freedom by choosing the truth. It is associated with the relationship to other people and to God. In this article, the issue of religious education in the family, with special attention to Christian values, as the foundation of education has been presented. Firstly, the author highlights the most significant values in religious education, which is freedom of the person, love, responsibility, and then he shows the role of values in the transmission of content: salvation, Jesus Christ, the Church and Mary.

This is the second of two articles that argue a case for a ‘big picture’ re-orientation of Australian Catholic school K-12 religion curricula. The first article1 considered that there has been such a great change in the landscape of contemporary spirituality that the traditional framework of religious meanings within which Catholic school religion curricula are written is out of synch with the meanings that inform contemporary spiritualities. A proposed responsive change in orientation suggests that more prominence needs to be given to the critical interpretation and evaluation of cultural meanings, while not neglecting the more traditional aim of giving young Catholics meaningful access to their religious heritage. The apparently different estimates of spirituality for children and ado-lescents also need to be taken into account. If many of the pupils in Catholic schools will never become actively involved in parishes when they grow up, then religious education needs to offer more than familiarising them with Catholic theology and religious prac-tice; it also needs to equip them with skills to address the spiritual and moral issues they will encounter in life. Attention is given to what this entails in both content and pedagogy, at primary and secondary levels.

This article studies the development of soft skills in religious education lessons in Slovakia. At present, the educational system focuses on the acquisition of knowledge in the form of hard skills instead of developing soft skills. However, soft skills are life necessities in the 21st century. Religious education, which is currently defined as the development of religious literacy, represents a meaningful space for the personal development of pupils, and the development of soft skills, which can be beneficial for their personal and professional life. According to research among religious education teachers, we can affirm that soft skills are included in the lessons. Nevertheless, while teachers have more developed effective management and communication skills, they lack the ability to support cooperative and independent learning.

Opis:
Rapidly progressing multifaceted secularization processes in Polish society strongly influence the shape of religious education of children and adolescents in the school environment. They determine a number of dimensions of the social and mental activity of young people. Their effects are visible, especially in the attitudes of children and youth to God, the Church, religious lessons, moral norms, and religious practices. This situation raises new challenges for the religious education of the young. Reading this as a “sign of the times,” this article revises religious education in Polish schools. The need to reorganize the model of religious education lessons and to introduce changes in the curricular assumptions of religious education teaching, in student textbooks and methodological guides is pointed out. Pre-evangelization and educational activities, resignation from the mere transfer of religious knowledge, and the development of preconceived skills and attitudes are considered important. The author emphasizes the value of providing opportunities for the construction of knowledge and for the student’s own engagement during religious education lessons. In this context, much attention is paid to the role of the religious education teacher, who is to be first and foremost a companion on a journey, an educator and a witness of faith, open to new challenges, able to communicate effectively with students, creative, and tolerant. The right personality traits of the religious education teacher and their multiple competencies (including communicative and interpersonal ones) play a key role in religious education. They guarantee the effectiveness of communication within a group of religious lesson participants. They foster authentic interpersonal relationships and community-building, thus meeting the natural needs of young people. In practice, they require a paradigm shift in the formation of religious education teachers.
