The paper discusses changes that took place in the ways of expressing reflexivity in Old English. The study examines and evaluates the two most common forms conveying reflexivity: the use of personal pronouns and the reflexive pronoun self. The Early Old English personal pronouns were able to convey a reflexive relation, but, probably in order to avoid ambiguity, the personal pronoun began to be accompanied by the pronoun self in sentences rendering a reflexive meaning. The paper also contains an account of self used on its own, which was mostly employed in structures with emphatic meanings. Moreover, the work will adduce an example of an Old English inherently reflexive verb. The data come from the Dictionary of Old English corpus.

The paper contains the original empirical study, based on quantified qualitative questionnaire, containing reflexivity scales - called QRT (Questionnaire to measure the Level of Reflexive Thinking) - developed by Kember et al. (2002) - translated, adjusted, validated and adopted to Polish circumstances. The aim was to compare the reflexivity levels amongst higher education students at differentiated faculties and at different levels of study (bachelor's, Master's and doctoral) to capture dependent variables and to promote reflexivity as a subject of scientific enquiry.

Opis:
Interpretive International Relations (IR) has become a robust and diverse research programme, consolidating across various subfields of the discipline. However, this is a recent phenomenon. While early classical realists and English School scholars clearly drew on interpretive thought, these contributions did not coalesce into a welldefined and specifically interpretive research agenda. The ‘interpretive turn’ in social sciences and humanities in the 1970s and epistemological pluralisation of political science and IR in the 1990s slowly made space for interpretive theory and research. This paper reconstructs, first, what makes interpretive IR distinct, and, second, what it means to engage in interpretive inquiry in this field, conceptually and substantively. It discusses in particular the implications of the monist ontological position that interpretivists tend to occupy and the conditions of knowledge production within the hermeneutical circle. These reject the possibility of transcending the context and bring to bear the researcher’s involvement in knowledge production as inevitable but generative. The paper also explicates the still poorly understood concept of ‘intersubjectivity’ as being defining for the interpretivist sensibility and one which directly contests positivist ideals. Interpretive IR scholarship serves as a veritable showcase for interpretive research practice, and points to the growing significance and volume of such scholarship.

The article critically examines the modernization of the Higher Education (HE) sector from the perspective of reflexive modernization. The source of radical change of HE in Poland was the neoliberal institutional solution, opening HE institutions to privatization, competition and marketization and liberating them from the heteronomous bureaucratic structure legitimized by the conditions of the previous system. To explain the nature of the changes in Higher Education, three analytical categories of reflexive modernization are used as heuristic tools: individualization, risk and reflexivity.

Opis:
In article author takes advantage of sociological theory of German thinker – Ulrich Beck – to analysis of contemporary football. He assumes that idea of cosmopolitanization developed by Beck instances interesting analytical tool to the scrutiny of that sport. The concept of cosmopolitanization emphasising on interpenetration of global flows and local environment appears as adequate to such examination. From one perspective some actors in global football field (eg. FIFA) put a lot of pressure on the rest actors (expelling national teams from countries with unstable political situations), but on the other hand football field constitutes a mixture of various influences, different kinds of “cosmopolitanization” (“coerced”, “latent”, “non-deformed”) and local dimensions of modernity. In the case of football fans it is justified to cover every day experiences with football by notion of “banal cosmopolitanization”. The author considers necessity to create the new units of analysis in exploration of contemporary football. Units from classical sociology, derived from world of first modernity need to be replaced (or enriched at least) by ones prepared in result of cosmopolitan turn in social sciences. Simultaneously, like other spectrums of social life (science, politics, identities and so on), football is found under influences of conditions of global manufactured uncertainty and risk. In article there are a few instances of risks connected to football.

The aim of the article is to present an original model of developing refl exivity in reference to educational events. The Department of Didactics and Studies in the Culture of Education lends the model a practical dimension in working with early school education teachers-to-be during the Refl exive Teacher Workshops course. The inspiration for creating (and sustaining) the model is a carried out under the direction of prof. Ewa Filipiak, Ph.D and is a research project concerning reflection in reference to educational events taken up by early school education teachers. The article indicates three concepts: (1) critical events in teaching by D. Tripp, (2) the reflexive practitioner by D.A. Schön and (3) mindfulness and mindlessness by E.J. Langer, all of which constitute a theoretical background for the model. The paper also presents an adopted understanding of reflexivity and reflection. Moreover, the paper considers the motives for using the model while working with teachers-to-be. Therefore, it discusses the value of being and becoming a reflexive teacher, as well as characteristic features of a reflexive practitioner and their significance for working with students.

Opis:
The present paper revolves around unusual paths of grammaticalization of Old French (12th century) reciprocal markers. This methodological framework requires medieval means of expressing reciprocity to be compared both with their parent forms in Classical Latin and with the markers introduced in subsequent stages of the history of French language. The first hypothesis deals with how parallel markers, i.e. ones that have a common origin and that are used inside the same area of grammar (se… entre- and entre eux < Lat. inter se), are different from each other. This path is claimed to materialize provided one of the two terms begins to serve a particular function not performed by the other one. The second hypothesis accounts for what means were used to prevent ongoing reflexive / reciprocal homonymy. This task happened to be provisionally fulfilled by cors a cors and coste a coste until the advent of adverbs ending in -ment in 14th century. As a consequence, body-part nouns lost most of their grammatical potential. The third hypothesis, formulated in terms of exaptation, explains how and why languages are likely to recycle erstwhile peripheral lexical elements. This evolutionary path takes place in response to a need to convey a given meaning unambiguously. Attempts at avoiding reflexive / reciprocal homonymy prompted the revival of seemingly forgotten Latin items reciprocus / mutuus. Concluding remarks address the problem of whether the concept of exaptation is useful in historical linguistics and contain a proposal towards constraining its scope. As for current views of grammaticalization, this notion seems to call for further refinements, as well.

Krav Maga (‘contact combat’) is an Israeli hand-to-hand combat discipline that originated in the early 19th century in response to life-threatening conflicts. Today, Krav Maga is a popular self-defense and martial art discipline practiced and taught throughout the world. One of the key features of Krav Maga that distinguishes it from other combat disciplines is its dependence on reflexive defense – a natural and immediate defensive reaction. However, the relevant literature has not discussed the motor control mechanisms that underlie reflexive defense in hand-to-hand combat or that account for its temporal characteristics. This introductory study argues that the reflexive defense at the core of Krav Maga is a genuine reflex mediated at the brainstem level. The paper also discusses some aspects of reaction in the context of self-defense and combat sports, and the implications for the debate on whether Krav Maga training should involve more than one combat response to any given threat.

Rationality is the key concept for understanding the reproduction of social life in the era of reflexive modernization. A fusion of lessons learned from the constructivist view of the world and analysis of the hermeneutic category of pre-understanding has become the basis of my belief that rationality is nowadays the basic modal concept, and the forms of its existence shape the order of social life. In my research practice, rationality has become a link between my interest in work and the theory of social order development. In this paper, I briefly present the relations between the notion of rationality and the theory of reflexive modernization. Then, I present my research path and the tools used in the analyses. The most important part is devoted to the effects of the conducted research. I classify and describe the types of rationality present in discourses on work in Poland. The discourses of politicians, experts, and the so-called “ordinary people” were analyzed.
