Opis:: The aim of the paper was to distinguish age groups of red deer stags in compliance with age classes (I−III) operational in game management practices in order to carry out individual selection of red deer populations living in the Warmia and Mazury regions. The parameters taken for analyses were, among others: the sum of points on the CIC scale, antler weight, length of beams and body weight. Moreover, the rate of growth of body weight and the selected features of antlers were analysed to identify age groups of stags. The analysis of the data from measurements of all stags harvested in the Olsztyn Province during three hunting seasons 1988/1989, 1989/1990 and 1990/1991 showed that the sampled group contained selective, shootable and prospective stags, i.e. non−selective stags below 10 years of age culled contrary to the selection criteria. Stags from the last two groups formed the class of strong stags, i.e. stags with antlers developed above the standard for a given age. The experimental material presented in this paper consisted of antlers collected from 1704 red deer stags including 405−546 antlers from non−selective (strong) stags.

Opis:: Measurements of 78 red deer calves were carried out taking into consideration their sex and age classes, i.e. calves harvested from 25 September to 30 November – younger age class and from 1 December to 15 January – older age class. It was demonstrated that the body weight of the average calve from the hunting area under study is about 43 kg, the length is over 155 cm and height at the withers and rump are 100 and 111.5 cm, respectively. Sex appeared to be the factor affecting the weight and size of red deer calves. It was proved that the body weight and size depend on the date of culling in the hunting season.

Opis:: Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. are wide-spread pathogens of humans and many species of mammals. The ways of transmission are very complex and diffi cult to defi ne. Both parasites occur in similar environments and share a broad host range. However, in Poland there is still little known about the epidemiology of these parasites due to the paucity of data on human cases and only few studies in wildlife. The aim of our study was to determine the distribution of two intestinal protozoa in a few species of protected and game mammals in North-Eastern Poland. Additionally, we wanted to compare prevalence and abundance of these parasites between wild and farm animals, and to determine the species/genotypes of Cryptosporidium. Fecal samples collected from protected species (European beaver – 22, grey wolf – 14, European bison – 55, Polish Konik (horse) – 5) and game mammals (red deer – 52, roe deer – 22, boar – 5) were examined by IFA. We also studied a group of samples collected from farm animals: beaver – 30, red deer – 66, Polish konik – 5. Cryptosporidium oocysts were identifi ed in 5 of 7 studied animal species (prevalence from 9% in roe deer to 36% in wolves), Giardia cysts in 4 of 6 studied species (prevalence from 1.7% in red deer to 7.7% in European beaver). Sequencing analysis of COWP gene fragment revealed that 5 Cryptosporidium isolates from wolves were C. parvum genotype 2 (zoonotic). The results show the important role of examined species in maintaining the natural sources of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. infections in the environment.

Opis:: Due to the fact that game animals in Poland over the last hundred years or so have been subject to statistical registration of their abundance and exploitation level, the history of animal species threatened by extinction, i.e. hare, partridge, capercaillie and black grouse and red deer, roe deer, wild boar, fox and beaver in the peak of their population success has been described. Attempt was made to establish the cause of the permanent negative or positive abundance dynamics for these species throughout the country. In addition, a forecast for the future development of these species was formulated.
