The authors of this article discuss how the works of Hermann Stehr (1864–1940), a German writer from Silesia, were received. An author, who – like Gerhart Hauptmann – stayed in Germany after the national socialists took over. That fact affected the reception of his writing: to this day, he is considered as a representative of the so-colled ‘literature of blood and land’, which the Nazis perceived as expression of „German spirit”. This article presents Stehr’s literary works from various perspectives. It shows the tragedy of the author making political choices in times, when an individual, even the most prominent, was subjected to totalitarian processes of unification and de-individualization.

The aim of the article is to present the position of Brazilian poetry in the Polish literary system using the examples of translations of poems by Carlos Drummond de Andrade. A library query has proved him to be the Brazilian poet whose works are most frequently translated into Polish. However, he remains little known in Poland, which results from both: lack of the representative publications in the mainstream and the quality of translations.

The author of the article – Yi Lijun, a distinguished translator of Polish literary works into Chinese – attempts to present the reception of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s works in China, con-centrating on the issues concerning translations. She presents vignettes of the greatest scholars’ discussing Sienkiewicz’s works, the history of reception of Sienkiewicz’s writings, as well as the methods of popularizing his novels. She concentrates on problematics concerning the process of translating Trylogy from Polish language into Chinese, pointing out the difficulties and mistakes made by translators. She discusses her own work on translating the novels of the author of Quo vadis.

In her article, Monika Gnieciak analyses the impact of the publication of the Twilight saga on the functioning of contemporary literary life. The controversial popularity of the saga, both among its fans and anti-fans, combined with the development of social networking sites at the time of its publication, resulted in a cultural change which caused the mechanisms of literary communication to undergo a permanent transformation. At the same time, the mass readership of Stephenie Meyer’s fiction brought about a change in the status of the young adult genre, which from a marginal literary product has developed into one of the most vibrant segments of the current publishing market.

The article presents the views of Stanislaw Szczepanowski (1845-1900) – a politician, an economist and a publicist – on the Polish XIXth century literature. Szczepanowski was an opponent of aestheticism and of cosmopolitan art. He treated literature instrumentally, seeing in it primarily a tool serving the realization of national goals. He especially valued Romantic Literature, for – in his belief – it guaranteed the continuity of culture and propounded the national ideal which integrated and activated the Polish nation. The foundation of this ideal is implementation of Christian ethical values into the political, social and economic life.

This article investigates the Spanish translation of Miron Białoszewski's Memoir from the Warsaw Uprising. I discuss the erroneous translation of the work as a “diary” according to Spanish dictionaries and literary theory works, the paratexts (introduction and afterword), and the reception of the work by the Spanish speaking community. In the last part, I examine a few passages to demonstrate how Białoszewski’s style has come to be flattened in the translation process.

In 1930 Sibilla Aleramo translated the play Dom kobiet by Polish writer Zofia Nałkowska into Italian. This three-act drama, probably the first play with only female characters in the history of theatre, was set in Warsaw the same year and was suddenly a huge success in Poland. Aleramo’s translation has remained unpublished and has been preserved (as a manuscript and a typescript draft) in the author’s archive belonging to the Fondazione Istituto Gramsci in Rome. The paper focuses on the history of this text, based mainly on the analysis of Nałkowska’s diary and unpublished letters and documents from Aleramo’s archive.

The article raises the topic of the evolving image of Venice from the perspectives of three travel accounts: by Vittorio Alfieri, Fryderyk August Moszyński, and Stanisław Dunin-Borkowski. They were all bound by the figure of the Italian playwright Alfieri. In the article, I propose a new look into the accounts from the travels of Polish intellectual elite: an enlightened journey described in the recollections by Moszyński, and a 19th-century journey depicted in the journals by Borkowski, following Alfieri as the guide. Considering his tragedies in support of national liberation, he perfectly matched the ideas in the minds of Polish artists at the turn of the 19th century. Even though the author may be forgotten today, the reception of his works, depending on the historical period, political situation, and literary streams, evolved interchangeably placing him in the spotlight and ignoring him. In the first half of the 19th century, he was a significant figure, a fact which triggers interesting observations, particularly in the context of the journeys of artists to Venice.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie oraz omówienie wyników eksperymentu związanego z percepcją emocjonalną poezji. W badaniu podjęto próbę weryfikacji hipotezy, według której pojawienie się znanego nazwiska kojarzonego jako wielki poetycki talent wpłynie na silniejsze deklaratywne natężenie przeżywanych emocji. Przebadano 110 osób (52 mężczyzn; 58 kobiet) podzielonych na cztery losowo dobrane grupy. Arkusze poszczególnych grup różniły się między sobą nazwiskiem rzekomego autora lub jego brakiem (grupa kontrolna). Wyniki udowodniły, że autorytet wpływa nie tylko na siłę deklarowanych emocji, ale też istotnie determinuje rodzaj przeżywanej emocji. Doprowadza to do wniosku, iż utworowi poetyckiemu częściej przypisujemy cechy i emocje kojarzone z jego autorem niż z samą treścią utworu.
The purpose of this article is a presentation and discussion of the results of an experiment connected with the emotional perception of poetry. This research sought to verify the hypothesis which states that revealing a famous name, associated with huge poetic talent, influences the intensity of emotions experienced. 110 people were tested (52 men, 58 women) in four randomly selected groups. Each group had a sheet of paper with the same text but with different authors' names or without any name (control group). The poem was written specially for this experiment. The next step was to measure of type and stremgth of emotions experienced on a scale of 1 to 7. The results proved that author's status not only influences the strength of emotion, but also determines the type of emotion. This suggests that more often we attribute the character and emotion of a poetic work to the author, rather than the content of the work.

Artykuł poświęcony jest próbie syntetycznego ujęcia problemu teatralnych realizacji utworów i biografii Władimira Majakowskiego na Węgrzech. Proces recepcji literatury rosyjskiej, w tym i Majakowskiego był na Węgrzech utrudniony z powodu silnej odmienności kulturowej i językowej kraju. Po raz pierwszy twórczość Majakowskiego trafiła do węgierskiego czytelnika w czasach politycznego napięcia, w okresie „białego terroru”. Mimo okoliczności, grunt okazał się podatny – część społeczeństwa, w tym literatów, pozytywnie odebrała rewolucję 1917 roku, a Majakowski widziany był jako rewolucjonista formy, ale przede wszystkim po 1945 roku, jako trybun ludów. Taki stosunek do Majakowskiego jako naczelnego głosu rewolucji proletariackiej i twórcy ważnego dla formowania się poetyki socjalistycznej jest obecny w teatrze węgierskim aż do lat 70. Potem, gdy nastąpiła rewolucja teatralna, akcent przeniesiony został na nowatorstwo formy. Mimo to trudno mówić o różnorodności repertuarowej – teatr węgierski zdecydowanie zdominowała Łaźnia, z nielicznymi wystawienia mi Pluskwy czy, dopiero współcześnie, wariację na temat twórczości Majakowskiego, która po raz pierwszy wprowadziła na scenę węgierską fragmenty Misterium Buffo.
The article offers a synthetic review of Hungarian theatrical realizations of Mayakovsky’s biography and works. The process of reception of Russian literature, including Mayakovsky, in Hungary was hindered by country’s strong cultural and language distinctness. For the fi rst time Mayakovsky’s works reached Hungarian reader during politically strained times, namely the period of “white terror”. Despite the circumstances, the ground was fertile – part of the society, including writers positively received the Revolution of 1917, while Mayakovsky was seen as the voice of the revolutionary forms and after 1945 as a tribune of the people. This attitude towards Mayakovsky – seen as the main voice of the proletarian revolution and key author in the process of the formation of socialist poetics – is noticeable in the Hungarian theater until the 1970’s. Then, after a theatrical revolution, accent was placed on his innovative forms. Although there was no real diversity in the repertoire – Hungarian theater was dominated by The Bathhouse, with some exceptions for The Bedbug, or, just until recently, a variation of the works of Mayakovsky, which for the first time introduced fragments of Mystery-Bouff e onto the Hungarian stage.

The article analyses strategies utilised by Wilhelmina Zyndram-Kościałkowska, a translator of the novel Dopo il divorzio by Grazia Deledda, to introduce Deledda’s works on the polish literary market. The text shows ways in which characteristics of Deledda’s works and Kościałkowska’s translation strategies serve to minimise the effect of foreignness and to present Deledda’s works as important argument in the polemics between the literary tradition and the modernity. In consequence, the Polish translation of Dopo il divorzio may be viewed as an act of an influence on a Polish literary system.

This article recalls the circumstances of the first edition of the novel by Boris Pasternak, Doctor Zhivago, in Polish translation, which appeared in 1959 in volume XLIV of the Biblioteka ‟Kultury” series, published by the Paris Literary Institute. Reconstruction of the history of this publishing initiative in the context of the political situation is possible thanks to historical sources preserved in the Paris and Warsaw archives, publications in periodicals, memoirs and epistolary culture. The circumstances in which the typescript was imported to Poland and in which the Literary Institute obtained a license for a Polish translation, the choice of translator, and Jerzy Giedroyc and Gustaw Herling-Grudziński’s correspondence are discussed. An important source of information is the lively correspondence between Maria Dąbrowska and Jerzy Stempowski, the son of a publicist and social activist, and Mason Stanisław Stempowski, a longtime life partner of the writer. The fragments of epistolary culture discussed here allow a better understanding of these outstanding individuals of the twentieth century. The content of the correspondence analyzed also allows us to reconstruct many interesting facts from the field of translating Russian literature into Polish, as well as the complex situation of Polish-Russian relations in the post-war period.

This article discusses the introduction of Polish books to children and young adult readers in South Korea. Its particular focus is on picture books which address environmental issues. Wioletta Hajduk-Gawron and Younghwa Kim examine the conditions favourable to the presence of translations of Polish books on the Korean publishing market, the phenomenon of the picture book and the values of eco-education through literature. Using several books as examples, the authors conduct a sample analysis of the chosen strategies used by publishers in the selection of books to be translated. They also examine strategies used in adapting a Polish book for the different cultural context; these strategies involve explication and textual or graphic modifications.

The following article presents the state of research on the reception of the work of the Ger-man female writer Ricarda Huch in Poland. The reception of her work in our country can be examined while analysing: the articles published in the form of a book, biograms printed in lexicons and encyclopaedias, presentation of Hutch’s literary work in studies concerning the history of German literature, translations of her poems, the translation of the novel Erinnerungen von Ludolf Ursleu, dem Jüngeren [Memories of Ludolf Ursleu Junior], the award of the prize of Ricarda Huch of Darmstadt town to the Polish writer Hanna Krall, and also the project of the students of German Studies at the University of Opole which propagates the work of R. Huch. Insofar as Ricarda Huch’s output was noted by the Polish researchers of the German literature what is evidenced by the papers dedicated to her literary legacy, still there is no reliable scientific study both on the German and Polish publishing market which wouldembrace comprehensively very diverse Huch’s output and base it in the aesthetic-literary, historical, social and political context.
Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia stan badań nad recepcją twórczości niemieckiej pisarki Ricardy Huch w Polsce. Recepcję jej twórczości w naszym kraju można rozpatrywać, analizując artykuły opublikowane w dziełach zwartych, biogramy zamieszczone w leksykonach i encyklopediach, przedstawienia dokonań literackich Huch w studiach dotyczących historii niemieckiej literatury, tłumaczenia jej wierszy, tłumaczenie powieści Erinnerungen von Ludolf Ursleu, dem Jüngeren [Wspomnienia Ludolfa Ursleu Juniora], przyznanie Nagrody im. Ricardy Huch Miasta Darmstadt polskiej pisarce Hannie Krall, a także projekt studentów opolskiej germanistyki propagujący twórczość R. Huch. O ile twórczość Ricardy Huch została odnotowana przez polskich badaczy literatury niemieckiej, o czym świadczą opracowania poświęcone jej spuściźnie literackiej, o tyle brak jest w dalszym ciągu rzetelnego opracowania naukowego zarówno na niemieckim, jak i polskim rynku wydawniczym, które ujęłoby całościowo bardzo zróżnicowaną twórczość Huch i osadziło ją w kontekście estetyczno-literackim, historycznym, społecznym i politycznym.
Der folgende Beitrag bespricht den Forschungsstand der Rezeptionsgeschichte des Werkes von Ricarda Huch in Polen. Die Rezeption Huchs Werke in Polen kann man unter folgenden Themenschwerpunkten analysieren: in geschlossenen Ausgaben veröffentliche Aufsätze, Biogramme in Lexika und Enzyklopädien, Besprechung von literarischen Werken von Huch in Studien über die deutsche Literaturgeschichte, die Übersetzung des Romans Erinnerungen von Ludolf Ursleu, dem Jüngeren ins Polnische, die Verleihung des Ricarda Huch Preises der Stadt Darmstadt an die polnische Schriftstellerin Hanna Krall sowie das Projekt der Oppelner Germanistikstudenten, welches sich auf die Popularisierung des Werkes von R. Huch bezog. Sofern das Werk von Ricarda Huch von polnischen Forschern der deutschen Literatur vernommen wurde, wovon die Besprechungen von Huchs literarischem Nachlass zeugen, fehlt bis heute sowohl auf dem polnischen wie auch auf dem deutschen Buchmarkt eine Bearbeitung, welche die sehr unterschiedliche Dichtkunst von Huch ganzheitlich umfassen und welche diese in einen ästhetisch-literarischen, historischen, sozialen und politischen Kontext einbetten würde.

The purpose of the article is to outline the guidelines of the interdisciplinary course in comparative literature, given at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. The subject of the series of lectures is the relation between Italian literature and different branches of art, in context of their cultural references. The strategies of sensibilization of the audience both to the problem of „sister arts” and to the Italian literature and language themselves are explained. In addition, the significance of an interdisciplinary approach to the problem of reception of Italian literature in European culture is mentioned as one of the aims of the lecture. Moreover, main problems of the course, such as themes of reintepretation of Italian classics in visual arts, music, cinema and theatre, are discussed on the background of „classroom dynamics” which characterize the group of students with different knowledge of Italian language and different cultural competences.

The aim of this essay is to draw the attention of sociologists to literature as one of the possible sources of inspiration for sociological analysis. Because of the fact that this area is often neglected by sociologists, it is important to remember about it as a sociological phenomenon. Not only are potential relations between sociology and literature brought to attention here, but also the ways in which sociologists may deal with literature in their research. Therefore some 'perspectives of sociology and literature' are brought to mind. This text, conceptual in assumption, refers to theoretically established ways of looking at a literary work as a basis for sociological interpretation. It is a problem, however, how the sociological research on literature ought to be done. This issue has also been mentioned and it has been emphasized that contact with literature, being an artistic material, could not be limited to precisely defined methods, which are usually used in a sociological study. Furthermore, questions of social and ideological engagement of literature, the social role of a writer and literary communication have also been raised. It is also brought up that research on sociology of literature also concerns the social context of formation of these works, their meaning to the target reader and historical factors connected with their creation. The subject matter for a sociologist can be the content of a work of art, because it is possible to deduce rules which create a certain model, on which a literary and social world is based. It has been strongly highlighted that a sociologist may treat fictional realia in the same way in which he treats the real world.
Celem tego eseju jest zwrócenie uwagi socjologów na literaturę piękną jako jedno z możliwych źródeł inspiracji do analizy socjologicznej. Zwraca się tu uwagę na możliwe związki socjologii z literaturą, jak również na to, w jaki sposób socjolog może się w swojej pracy naukowej literaturą zajmować. Zostają przypomniane pewne "socjologiczno-literackie perspektywy". Tekst ten, w założeniu problemowy, odnosi się do ugruntowanych teoretycznie sposobów spojrzenia na dzieło literackie jako podstawę socjologicznej interpretacji. Swego rodzaju problemem jest także sposób, w jaki powinny być przeprowadzane socjologiczne badania nad literaturą. Nieco miejsca poświęcono i temu zagadnieniu, zwracając uwagę, że kontakt z tak plastycznym materiałem, jakim bywa literatura, nie może być ograniczany trzymaniem się ściśle określonych ram metodologicznych przewidzianych zazwyczaj dla przedmiotu badań socjologa. Zostaje m.in. kwestia ideologicznego i społecznego zaangażowania literatury, społecznej roli pisarza oraz problematyka komunikacji literackiej. Przedmiotem zainteresowania socjologa może być też treść samych utworów, gdy możliwym staje się wywiedzenie z niej np. zasad tworzących pewien model, na którym opiera się wykreowany literacko społeczny świat. W znacznej mierze skupiono się na ewentualności traktowania przez socjologa realiów fikcyjnych, na niemal takich samych zasadach, na jakich odnosi się on do świata rzeczywistego.

Franz Kafka was a writer interested in the European intellectual vision of the East. As an intellectual of the German cultural circles he was familiar with contemporary types of reception of the Orient (literary, philosophical and religious aspects), both in positive and negative terms. In several of his works (The Great Wall of China, An Old Manuscript, Jackals and Arabs) he employs oriental motifs to express his own, autonomous worlds of imagination and thought. Although they relate to the Western European projections of the East, Kafka was generally more interested in outlining a situation of tension between the rational and impulsive factor in human consciousness, or expressing the sense of alienation felt by an individual towards a modern state. In addition to these factors, for Kafka the Orient was also a way to manifest his own responsibility for creating literature understood as a way of spiritual development.

During the three decades since 1989 Gazeta Wyborcza published a considerable number of articles, reviews, reports, essays (feuilletons) and news items about various aspects of Czech cultural life, especially contemporary literature (i.e. individual authors as well as issues and sites with literary connections). While a steady focus was kept on the work of the most popular, award-winning writers like Václav Hrabal, Milan Kundera, Ota Pavel, Jaroslav Hašek, Karel Čapek and Josef Škvorecký, Gazeta Wyborcza also promoted the fiction of Michal Viewegh, Irena Obermannová and Jáchym Topol
Na łamach „Gazety Wyborczej” w latach 1989–2019 zamieszczano artykuły przeglądowe, recenzje, reportaże, felietony i wzmianki, poświęcone rozmaitym aspektom życia kulturalnego w Czechach, szczególnie zaś współczesnej literaturze. Odnosiły się one zarówno do poszczególnych autorów, jak i miejsc oraz kwestii ideowych, powiązanych z literaturą czeską. Najwięcej pisano o twórczości tych autorów czeskich, którzy byli popularni i nagradzani, jak Hrabal, Kundera, Ota Pavel, Hašek, Havel, Čapek, Škvorecký. Popularyzowano także mniej znanych czeskich twórców literackich, jak Michal Viewegh, Irena Obermannova, Jachym Topol.
