Understanding thorax kinematics and rib breaking mechanisms in conditions of oblique and lateral impact is crucial in safety systems development. To increase knowledge level on this subject, simulation and experimental tests are necessary. The purpose of this study was to obtain single rib kinematics in the case of oblique and lateral impact conditions using numerical simulation approach. Methods: Two impact tests using human body model of a 50th percentile man (THUMS v4.0.1 AM50) were performed in LS-Dyna R7.1.1. Impactor was a rigid cylinder with a diameter of 152 mm, and velocity equal to 6.7 m/s. Impact angle measured to sagittal plane was 30 and 90°, respectively in oblique and lateral impact case. Results: Kinematics of ribs from 3rd to 6th were analyzed. Results shown significant similarities between oblique impact and kinematics of ribs tested in frontal impact conditions in the literature, with maximal costochondral joint displacement relatively to costovertebral joint varying from 65.4 mm (3rd rib) to 82.0 mm (5th rib). Deformation of rib in lateral impact conditions was different than during oblique impact test, with distinctive “flattening” approximately in the middle of the rib. Maximal relative displacement varies from 16.4 mm (6th rib) to 26.6 mm (5th rib) and its location depends on the analyzed rib. Conclusions: Oblique impact scenario may be simulated for the single rib on an experimental way using set-up of the frontal impact. Experimental simulation of the lateral impact for the single rib should not use the same set-up, as the kinematics analysis showed significant differences between simulated cases.

The costovertebral articulation is integral to constrain the thoracic kinematics and to infer the breathing mechanism in the respect with costal aspiration. However, the structure of the costovertebral articulation in non−avian theropods has not been studied in great detail before. This study highlights the Tyrannosauridae, which is represented by numerous complete specimens. Costovertebral articulations of ten tyrannosaurid specimens, including two nearly in−situ articulated fossils, were investigated and compared with those in extant Archosauria. For extant archosaurs, dissections were conducted to rationalize the soft tissue anatomy in tyrannosaurids. This study shows that the rib articulates ventrally or posteroventrally with the distal end of the corresponding vertebral transverse process in the tyrannosaurid ribcage. A ligament (ligamentum costotransversarium) can be reconstructed to connect the rib tuberculum to the transverse process in each articulation. The scar for lig. costotransversarium is recognizable in many theropod skeletons, and this rugosity can be used to identify the rotational axis for the rib. This result provides a cornerstone for exploring the evolution of the ribcage and breathing mechanisms across the theropod lineage leading to birds.

Opis:
Moisture management is a very fundamental criterion for any type of fabric. Hence, in this study three different knits viz plated interlock, mini flat back rib and flat back rib fabric structures with 100% eri silk (top), 100% bamboo (bottom) and 100% tencel (bottom) with the combination of two different yarn counts were used. The yield was tested for moisture management properties. It was identified that the bi-layer eri silk (14.3 tex) combined with bamboo (14.8 tex) and tencel (14.8 tex) plated interlock, mini flat back rib and flat back rib knit structure fabrics were excellent. Due to the high level of comfort and breathable nature, eri silk with bamboo and tencel fabrics are recommended for performance based garments.
Zarządzanie wilgocią jest podstawowym kryterium dla każdego rodzaju wyrobu włókienniczego. W badaniu poddano analizie trzy różne struktury dziewiarskie o różnych splotach i składach takich jak: 100% jedwabiu eri, 100% bambusa i 100% tencel. Uzyskane struktury zbadano pod kątem właściwości zarządzania wilgocią. Stwierdzono, że struktura powstała z dwuwarstwowego jedwabiu eri (14,3 tex) w połączeniu z bambusem (14,8 tex) i tencelem (14,8 tex) daje najlepsze właściwości. Ze względu na wysoki poziom komfortu i oddychalności jedwab eri w połączeniu z bambusem i tencelem jest zalecany do odzieży wymagającej bardzo dobrych właściwości zarządzania wilgocią.

In the paper, finite element analysis of the rib cage model is applied to recognize stress distributions and to determine the rate of bone fractures (especially for pathologically changed bones). Two thorax models are considered and the role of the implant is illustrated and discussed. The simulation result shows a good agreement wit h the cadaver test data.
Artykuł przedstawia analizę wytrzymałościową klatki piersiowej metodą elementów skończonych. Przeprowadzone badania pozwalają na poznanie rozkładu naprężeń i odkształceń w klatce piersiowej oraz na ocenę miejsc najbardziej narażonych na złamania. Rozpatrzono dwa modele klatki piersiowej: pierwszy człowieka zdrowego oraz drugi człowieka po chirurgicznej operacji lejkowatej klatki piersiowej z zastosowaniem implantu. Opisano wpływ implantu na wytrzymałość klatki piersiowej.

In order to explore a more reasonable structure and operating parameter, guide the design and improve the gasification of seawater Open Rack Vaporizer (ORV), Research on the rules of seawater that flows and heat transfer in the ORV tube was studied in this paper. By simplifying the model, heat transfer tube model with spoiler lever was obtained and simulated, the distribution of temperature field, gas ratio, velocity field and press field in rib tube were analyzed, and different inlet velocity of LNG, roughness of the tube wall both effected on the overall gasification, the results shows that the actual gasification efficiency from heat transfer tube is higher than normal, small difference of gas ratio outlet, velocity and temperature are both lower, LNG could be easer gasified at operating temperature between -162°C~+3°C than that between -162°C~+0°C.

The present study aimed to determine the effect of moisture transmission finish on the performance of knitted cotton fabrics in terms of their tensile strength and moisture transmission behavior. Two groups: single and rib-knit cotton fabrics were collected from Nishat Mills Limited. A moisture management finish was applied onto the collected fabrics. The effect of the applied finish was investigated against their moisture transmission behavior by following the AATCC 195-2009 test procedure. The tensile strength was also evaluated with the ASTM D 5035-11 test method. The difference was studied between finished and unfinished samples. It was concluded that the moisture transmission finish has decreased the absorption rate and spreading speed of water through/in treated fabrics as compared to untreated fabrics. Moreover, breaking load and elongation of knitted fabrics in both directions were also improved with the application of finish.

Breast cancer management is important for both oncologists and plastic surgeons. We can observe a considerable progress in knowledge and treatment modalities in this type of cancer. Treatment often requires reconstruction of the removed breast. Modern methods are becoming better and more suited to patient’s needs. At the same time, we observe a steadily increasing interest in quality of life after medical procedures. This tendency is particularly visible in plastic surgery, where simple analysis of complication rate is insufficient. In order to effectively help, a scrupulous evaluation of the outcomes by the patient herself is necessary. The aim of the study is to discuss and present the use of BREAST-Q questionnaire. It allows to assess patient’s satisfaction with the breast treatment as a whole and medical care. In this article, we present BREAST-Q questionnaire scores in 20 patients following secondary breast reconstruction with DIEP flap without rib removal when accessing internal mammary vessels. The assessment of quality of life is necessary for the reconstructive surgeon to evaluate his own work. It enables deeper understanding of needs and better advice for future patients during preoperative consultation. The results can also be useful for payers in order to decide about reimbursement of specific procedures.

The aim of this paper was to assess the histomorphometrical and mechanical properties of ribs in patients with idiopathic scoliosis who underwent corrective surgery of scoliosis combined with thoracoplasty. Methods: The analyzed material encompasses 20 females between the ages of 12 and 18, whose pre-operative Cobb angle was 56.85 degrees, on average. The participants were divided into two age groups, up to the age of 15 and above 15 years old, taking into account the anatomical location of the assessed rib fragments with a division into floating and false ribs. The analysis of mechanical parameters was carried out by means of the quasi-static 3-point bending test, and the histomorphometric evaluation of the examined rib fragments was carried out using high-resolution computed tomography. Results: The existence of explicit relationships between selected radiological parameters describing scoliosis and mechanical and histomorphometric parameters of the ribs has not been confirmed. Statistically significant correlations between age and rib stiffness as well as between Young’s modulus and stiffness depending on the anatomical location of the examined rib fragment were confirmed. Conclusions: Mechanical and histomorphometric properties of bone tissue in patients with scoliosis are not explicitly associated with the radiological parameters characterizing scoliosis.

The key difference between amniotes (reptiles, birds and mammals) and anamniotes (amphibians in the broadest sense of the word) is usually considered to be the amniotic egg, or a skin impermeable to water. We propose that the change in the mode of lung ventilation from buccal pumping to costal (rib-based) ventilation was equally, if not more important, in the evolution of tetrapod independence from the water. Costal ventilation would enable superior loss of carbon dioxide via the lungs: only then could cutaneous respiration be abandoned and the skin made impermeable to water. Additionally efficient carbon dioxide loss might be essential for the greater level of activity of amniotes. We examine aspects of the morphology of the heads, necks and ribs that correlate with the mode of ventilation. Anamniotes, living and fossil, have relatively broad heads and short necks, correlating with buccal pumping, and have immobile ribs. In contrast, amniotes have narrower, deeper heads, may have longer necks, and have mobile ribs, in correlation with costal ventilation. The stem amniote Diadectes is more like true amniotes in most respects, and we propose that the changes in the mode of ventilation occurred in a stepwise fashion among the stem amniotes. We also argue that the change in ventilatory mode in amniotes related to changes in the postural role of the epaxial muscles, and can be correlated with the evolution of herbivory.

Opis:
Numerical predictions of heat transfer under laminar conditions in a square duct with ribs are presented in this paper. Ribs are provided on top and bottom walls in a square duct in a staggered manner. The flow rates have been varied between Reynolds number 200 and 600. Various configurations of ribs by varying length, width and depth have been investigated for their effect on heat transfer, friction factor and entropy augmentation generation number. Further artificial neural network integrated with genetic algorithm was used to minimize the entropy augmentation generation number (performance factor) by selecting the optimum rib dimensions in a selected range. Genetic algorithm is compared with microgenetic algorithm to examine the reduction in computational time for outlay of solution accuracy.

This paper aims to investigate the mixed convection between two parallel plates of a vertical channel, in the presence of a triangular rib. The non-stationary Navier-Stokes equations were solved numerically in a two-dimensional formulation for the low Reynolds number for the laminar air flow regime. Six triangular ribs heat-generating elements were located equidistantly on the heated wall. The ratio of the ribs to the channel width is varied (h / H = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) to study the effect of ribs height effects, the ratio of the channel width to the ribs height is fixed constant at (H / w = 2) and the ratio of the channel height to the ribs pitch is fixed at (W/p=10). The influence of the Reynolds number that ranged from 68 to 340 and the Grashof number that ranged from 6.6 ×103 to 2.6 ×104 as well as the Richardson number chosen (1.4, 0.7, 0.4 and 0.2) is studied. The numerical results are summarized and presented as the profile of the Nusselt number, the coefficient of friction, and the thermal enhancement factor. The contribution of forced and free convection to the total heat transfer is analyzed. Similar and distinctive features of the behavior of the local and averaged heat transfer with the variation of thermal gas dynamic and geometric parameters are investigated in this paper. The results showed that the Nusselt number and friction factor increased by using the attached triangular ribs, especially when using the downstream ribs. Also, the results revealed that the Nusselt number increased by increasing the ratio of the ribs to the channel width.

Exergy analysis is a powerful thermodynamic tool and it helps in computing the actual output of a system. It helps the researchers to optimize the roughened solar air heater design to compensate the present and also the future needs. In this study, investigation on exergetic performance evaluation of a solar air heater with W-shaped roughened absorber surface analytically by employing mathematical model and the results obtained are compared with smooth plate solar air heater under same operating conditions. The exergetic efficiency curves has been plotted as a function of different values of Reynolds number and temperature rise parameter for different roughness parameters. The maximum augmentation in the exergetic efficiency of the solar air heater with W-shaped roughened surface as compared to solar air heater with smooth surface has been obtained as 51% corresponding to the relative roughness height of 0.03375 and the rib angle of attack about 60°. Based on the exergetic efficiency the suitable design parameters of solar air heater with W-shaped roughened are determined.

Opis:
The paper presents the description of structure and the selected problems of the technical condition, as well as the strength analysis of the thin-walled reinforced concrete shell which has been making a covering of the main hall of the Gdynia Seaport Building through the last 80 years. The rectangle projection of four single curvature shells of the dome was shaped out of mutual perpendicular intersection of two cylindrical shells. The analysis of the state of stress and deformations was carried out using the special model worked out in MES considering the combination of loads, the thermal ones included. For the long lasting loads (the deadweight of the dome), the computed results of static quantities were confronted with analytical results obtained according to F. Dischinger’s method. This method had been applied by the DYWIDAG Company in Berlin and its branch in Katowice (Poland) who designed the Gdynia Dome. The computational analysis and the assessment of the technical state, along with laboratory pH tests of concrete, made it possible to carry out the overall evaluation of durability and safety of operation of the Gdynia Seaport Dome through the next decades.

Methods: The finite element analysis is employed to compare the different responses of the human body model, including the comparison of kinematics, chest accelerations, seatbelt forces and chest injury outcomes regrading chest deflections and rib fractures. Results: The calculated rib strain/stress from simulations in force-limiting seatbelt are higher than that in the regular seatbelt. The forward movement and torso twist are both great in simulations with force-limiting seatbelt. Meanwhile, there are obvious differences in the injury outcomes of chest deflections and rib fracture risks under the different seatbelt loads. Conclusion: Results indicate the chest deflections and rib fracture risks are negatively correlated under the load of the force-limiting seatbelt, However, they are positively correlated to and determined by the seatbelt peak load of the regular seatbelt. This paper can provide a reference for study of the chest injury mechanism and the protection efficiency of seatbelt.
