Opis:
The article was written by me and my students from the Faculty of Psychology and Humanities Academy of Krakow. Senior Clubs are a very good example of social capital as a network of social relationships between individuals who trust each other and have a reciprocal. People in the network tend to mutually support each other, help and exchange important information. Thanks to the participation in the Senior Clubs can contribute actively to prevent a serious threat occurring at the senior age, which is depression. According to the WHO, it is the fourth most serious health problem in the world, which are often the source of a signifi cant deterioration in mental functioning, physical and social disability, and suicide attempts. Depression in the elderly is more dependent on environmental factors than younger people. While younger people family burden found in about 80% in the elderly is at about 44%. This means that the depression at the senior age is much more driven by the social rather than biological factors compared with younger age groups. This also means that it is easier to prevent and treat using these social factors. One of the main causes of depression in the elderly is the depletion interaction with the environment, and reduced activity. Therefore, it is important to stimulate the activation of such persons, thereby reducing the risk of depression. Recent psychological research indicates a strong relationship of friendship with happiness and the length and quality of life. Friendship improves happiness through the creation of social support and a sense of belonging. The aim of our research presented in this article was to test the hypothesis that individuals who actively participate in the Senior Club are less depressed than those who do not participate. Our team conducted empirical research presented in this paper, allowed to confirm this hypothesis. Activity in the Senior Club provides activities, involvement and support of mental health, which may significantly prevent the development of depression. Of course, it is also probably the case that those who are already at risk of suffering from depression or her less likely to participate in the activities of the Senior Citizens Clubs. It is often associated with passivity, apathy and withdrawal from the social environment, and so often associated with symptoms of depression. However, even in such a situation, the primary treatment, usually bringing more interest in the world and people should encourage such people to actively participate in senior clubs. It is then treated as a kind of social therapy. Social and cultural activity in old age is a factor in increasing the quality of life, serving mental and physical health, increasing the level of happiness and reducing the level of suffering.

Opis:
Dotyczył on w szczególności starszych seniorów, których rówieśnicy umierali i w efekcie sieć kontaktów badanego ulegała skurczeniu.
The main goal of the research was to understand the perception of the quality of life by the elderly. The research followed a qualitative approach. There were 8 individual In-depth interviews and a Focus group interview conducted. The study was split into 4 thematic blocks: quality of life, social and family networks, health and support. The respondents identified health status and financial situation as the main quality of life determinants. Despite the financial and health problems that the older people are facing, the respondents are trying to be self-sufficient. They have positive attitude towards life and strive to actively exert influence on its quality. Almost all interviewed people underlined the unassisted living and independence as key elements of the health definition. They almost unanimously pointed at exercise and diet as two main factors affecting health. Additionally, genetic conditioning, past health treatment negligence as well as access to a doctor were mentioned as determinants of their current health status. What’s more, they observed that health deterioration is affecting their relations with family and friends and the way they spend free time. When examining the social and family networks the focus was put on two types of relations: friends and family. The respondents pointed at distinctness of these two types of relations, however they treated them more often as complementary rather than substitutable. In the conducted interviews the problem of loneliness also appeared. It particularly concerned older seniors whose peers had already been dying and, therefore, their network of contacts had been shrinking. The respondents most often required help with cleaning and getting small affairs in order, while the support came mostly from family. The support was also provided by professional caregivers and friends. Asking for help was difficult for the respondents. That is why they tried to be self-sufficient and asked for help only when it was indispensable. The respondents were eager to take care of their grandchildren, they support their children financially and give small neighbor-support.

Opis:
Background: The issue of grandparents’ support provided to their families is undertaken in Polish literature very seldom. There are no studies concerning single mother families. The purpose of the article is to examine the extent to which grandparents provide support to grandchildren brought up in single mother families, and determine the relationship between the grandparents’ support and the grandchildren’s quality of life. Materials and Methods: The survey data were collected from 119 people from single mother families. The Student’s Life Satisfaction Scale SLSS was used to test the quality of life and the Social Support Scale (SWS) was used to test the strength and type of support from grandparents. Results: Mother’s parents are involved in each of the considered types of support in a higher degree than father’s parents, regardless of the place of residence of the single mother family. In small towns maternal grandparents provide information support more often than paternal grandparents, maternal grandmothers engage in instrumental aid to grandchildren more often than paternal grandparents. In cases of families living in large cities, when the paternal grandfather gives instrumental, emotional or evaluative support, grandchildren assess their quality of life significantly better. The assessment of quality of life is also higher in cases of maternal grandfather’s emotional engagement in support for grandchildren. Conclusions: The results suggest that the grandfathers’ (particularly paternal grandfather’s) support in the single mother family is positively connected with quality of life of grandchildren. It can be assumed that supporting grandparents contribute to strengthening the resilience of whole family.

The purpose of this thesis is the comparison of some chosen aspects of life quality of elderly people that are chronically ill and reside uder institutional care or stay at their own homes. Research covered 100 seniors, ages from 65 to 92, including 50 patients of the Nursing and Therapeutic Institution in Nowy Targ and 50 ill and elderly people staying at their homes and using home rehabilitation. 50 men and 50 women were interviewed. To carry out the research I used the diagnostic survey method. The quality of life of the subjects was evaluated by means of the standard WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Three other standard questionnairies were also used in the research: the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Tinetti’s Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA) and the Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living scale (IADL). ZOL’s members rated lower satisfaction with quality of life and their health, compared to seniors staying in homes under the care of their families. In the study groups, significantly higher quality of life in four areas was found in the group of seniors living in their own homes compared to the seniors living in ZOL. Based on the research results it was found that the evaluation of quality of life of elderly people significantly depends on the environment they live in.

The article focuses on assessing the psychological situation of parents and adult siblings of people with intellectual disabilities. The aim of the research presented in this article was to check whether social support plays an important role in achieving social well-being of parents raising children with intellectual disabilities and their adult siblings. Analysis of the research results made it possible to conclude which dimensions are particularly important for specific components of mental well-being among parents and adult siblings of people with intellectual disabilities. Research confirmed some theoretical assumptions about the role of support as a determinant of the level of psychological well-being of the respondents.

Purpose: Recent studies have shown that the role of social support is a predictive factor influencing the course of the disease. The current study is focused on patients’ assessment of quality of life and the relationship of the latter with perceived social support. Materials and methods: A total sample of 40 hemodialysis patients voluntarily participated in this study. Participants were recruited from two clinics in Athens and have been under hemodialysis. The measures used were the Missoula- Vitas Quality of Life Index–15 and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. For the data analysis descriptive statistics, parametric Pearson r test and Non-parametric Spearman’s rho test were used. Statistical level was set up at 0.05. Results: The results of the current study provide good quality of life of hemodialysis patients and significant statistical significance between quality of life in several domains. Conclusions: This study concludes that the participants’ assessment of quality of life is poor regarding the well-being dimension. Also, perceived social support is significantly related to quality of life

Opis:
Rodziny te wciąż potrzebują różnych form interwencji psychologicznej, aby umiały efektywnie radzić sobie w obszarze relacji społecznych i wsparcia.
The quality of life of a family with a deaf child is inevitably affected by the presence of deafness. Social support of any kind including support from disability-related services plays especially important role for these families. Families with children with disabilities experience low quality of life in relation to social interactions and limited support from people other than their close family, i.e. distant relatives, friends and/or neighbours. The study included 50 families with a deaf child aged between 6.5 and 47 months. The FQOLS-2006 (Family Quality of Life Survey 2006) was used and completed by hearing mothers. For the analyses, mothers’ responses for the FQOLS-2006 part A in three domains of life were taken into account: support from others, support from disability-related services and community interactions. It turned out that families with young deaf children are involved in local community life to the limited extent, they do not experience discrimination acts/behaviours, and receive more emotional than practical support from relatives, friends as well as neighbours. Distant relatives are more a source of emotional and practical support than friends and neighbours. Few families with a deaf child do not have access to special services necessary for them to fulfil deaf children’s special needs. It seems appropriate to offer various forms of psychological intervention for families with young deaf children in order to help them to cope effectively with social relations and social support.

A number of changes caused by paradigmatic changes as well as additionally disturbed by COVID-19 have led to the emergence of solutions slightly different from the conventional ones in theory, methodology and practice of rehabilitation. The primary ecological states for the issues under consideration in which organisms may be found are those of population surplus and population shortage. The first of these states became the basis for the development of the evolution theory, while the second one served as an impulse to consider a number of phenomena in the convention of self-organizing systems, which undoubtedly influenced the formation of certain paradigms in the field of rehabilitation. Currently, the dominant humanistic paradigm with its detailed forms constitutes the basis for the development of research and experience related to the broadly understood issue of disability. With new ideas being constantly generated, the one which has been discussed in the article is the paradigm of the quality of life support for people with disabilities.

ObjectivesWork-related stress (WRS) is significantly associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL), but the amounts of evidence on differences of effort-reward imbalance (ERI) and job strain index (JSI) remain sparse and have limited generalizability. Therefore, we aimed to assess the association between ERI and JSI with HRQoL and assess the mediation effect of social support (JS) and over-commitment (OC) on this association in Taiwan’s civil servants.Material and MethodsA cross-sectional national survey was given to registered civil servants in Taiwan – 20 046 civil servants from 647 institutions were enrolled using multistage stratified random cluster sampling. A web-questionnaire collected demographic information, job characteristics, and different indexes of ERI and job-control-demand-support (JCDS) models. Structural equation model (SEM) was used to examine the association between ERI and JSI with HRQoL, and the mediation effect of JS and OC on the associations.ResultsIn the ERI model, ERI and OC were consistently negatively associated with the mental component score (MCS) (r = –0.46 and r = –0.37) and physical component score (PCS) (r = –0.45 and r = –0.34), which were higher than job demand (r = –0.28 and r = –0.22) and JSI (r = –0.38 and r = –0.29). Using hierarchical multiple regression analyses, ERI was significantly correlated with MCS and PCS, which was consistently higher than JSI. The ERI and JSI were significantly correlated with MCS (β = –0.170 and β = –0.140) and PCS (β = –0.150 and β = –0.082) using SEM analysis, whereas ERI was considerably higher than in JSI. In addition, OC and JS mediated the association between The ERI and JSI with HRQoL.ConclusionsWe found the ERI index is significantly correlated with HRQoL superior to JSI, in particular among Taiwan civil servants. Further longitudinal studies are needed to determine the causality and spatiotemporal relation of these differences.

ObjectivesThe study explores the direct and indirect associations (i.e., through the extent of the level of loneliness and perceived social support) between internet use for instrumental purposes and the quality of life (QoL) among elderly females and males in Poland.Material and MethodsThe analysis was based on 2001 face-to-face interviews performed among randomly selected individuals aged ≥65 years from the general population. The collected data was weighted to generalize the study sample for the reference population. The analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression models. The mediation effect was tested according to the Baron and Kenny approach.ResultsThe obtained results indicate that internet use for instrumental purposes is directly related to a better QoL of elderly Polish males. This positive effect among men also occurs indirectly, through the decrease in loneliness levels as well as the increase in social support scores. It has also been shown that among elderly females, the effect of internet use for instrumental purposes is not related to a better QoL, either directly or indirectly.ConclusionsInternet use for instrumental purposes seems to be important in enhancing a successful life among elderly male adults. However, these technologies are not associated with better QoL among females. Practitioners should be aware of these gender differences. The study adds to the previous studies by demonstrating that the feeling of loneliness and social support mediates the relationship between internet use for instrumental purposes and QoL among elderly males, whereas among elderly females this effect does not occur.

Opis:
Materiał i metody: W badaniu uczestniczyło 64 rodziców (32 matki i 32 ojców); średnia wieku matek wynosiła 37 lat, a ojców 41 lat. W pracy wykorzystano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego, natomiast narzędzia badawcze stanowiły: polska wersja Berlińskich Skal Wsparcia Społecznego (BSSS) oraz Skala Jakości Życia z kwestionariusza WHOQOL – BREF. Wyniki: Wykazano brak różnic istotnych statystycznie pomiędzy matkami a ojcami w zakresie mierzonych podskal wsparcia społecznego (p > 0,05). Ojcowie w porównaniu do matek mają wyższą jakość życia w dziedzinie psychologicznej (M = 3,12, SD = 0,79 vs. M = 3,53, SD = 0,56, p = 0,021).
Introduction: Being a parent of a disabled child is a factor that can clearly lower the quality of life. This is dependent on the level of the child’s disability and the level of support received. The aim of this study was to compare the level of social support and the quality of life of mothers and fathers. Material and methods: Sixty-four parents participated in the study and the average age of the mothers was 37 years, and of the fathers was 41 years. The study used the diagnostic survey method, while the evaluation tool was the Polish version of the Berlin Scale of Social Support (BSSS) and the Quality of Life Scale (WHOQOL – BREF). Results: There were no statistically significant differences between mothers and fathers in the subscales of social support (p > 0.05). Compared to mothers, fathers have a higher quality of life in the psychological field (M = 3.12, SD = 0.79 vs. M = 3.53, SD = 0.56, p = 0.021). In turn, in fathers, the quality of life in the psychological and social field correlates with the perceived available support, support currently received, and the quality of life in the environmental category is related to the support currently received. However, in the group of fathers, the quality of life in the somatic field is not significantly related to any scale of social support. In mothers, the somatic, psychological, social and environmental quality of life depends on the perceived support available and currently received (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Social support for both the mothers and fathers of children with physical disabilities was at a similar level. The quality of life of parents raising a disabled child is improving in all areas due to the social support received. The exception is the somatic quality of life in fathers, which does not depend on support. The fathers in the study group have a higher quality of life in the psychological field.

Opis:
To assess the quality of life of patients with chronic end-stage renal failure under hemodialysis, and to determine its main generators in hemodialysis patients. This is a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study carried out at the regional hospital of Kénitra (Morocco) in the level of the hemodialysis unit during a period of 3 months with 70 hemodialysis patients diagnosed and treated for chronic renal failure. Data were collected using a questionnaire comprising the socio-demographic, clinical, and nutritional characteristics of Hemodialysis patients and a KDQOL scale (Kidney Disease Quality Of Life) that assesses the quality of life. The scores of the KDQOL-36 were used to assess family, social support, and social support from caregivers. The average age was 51.66± 15.96 years with 57.1% of patients who are female. The components of the quality of life studied show an alteration in the quality of life with a decrease in the scores of the “component of physical health” dimensions with a score of 27.64 ± 29.13,“Component of mental health” with a score of 37.81 ± 22.99, “effects of kidney disease on daily life” with a score of 48.41 ± 21.22 and “burdens of kidney disease” with a score of 28.47 ± 21.50. While the dimension “Symptoms / problems of kidney disease” remains close to normal with a score of 64.61 ± 17.98. Our results showed that certain dimensions of the quality of life correlate with age, sex, family situation, level of education, the presence of a transplant plan, the presence of comorbidities and the duration of hemodialysis. Our study also found a correlation between family social support and quality of life in its “Burdens of Kidney Disease”, “Effects of Kidney Disease on Daily Living”, and the overall quality of life score. On the other hand, there is no significant relationship with support from caregivers. The quality of life of hemodialysis patients is deteriorating. It is influenced by several parameters including family and caregiver social support. The involvement of the family and the health care team in the psychological support process is paramount.

Opis:
Objectives of the research: The goal of the research was to identify the type and extent of activities that special education facilities engage in to teach and promote independence in people with profound disorders of intellectual development. Research methods: Empirical material was collected using the author’s original online questionnaire, which consisted of 30 questions measuring the extent to which students’ needs for developing independent living skills are met. The survey was conducted among special education teachers (N=642) from seven European countries (Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey). A short description of the context of the issue: Independent living is widely seen as an immanent attribute of adulthood. Children and adolescents are prepared for independent living through the process of upbringing and socialization; people with disabilities are additionally prepared through rehabilitation. For people with a profound disorder of intellectual development, independent living is challenging but possible with the right support. Research findings: The results indicate that in the course of developing independent living skills in people with profound disorders of intellectual development, efforts are mainly made to improve their self-management skills and democratic management methods in both team work and individual work. Conclusions and recommendations: In the surveyed countries, there is a tendency to limit work for developing independent living skills to a single type of intervention. Rarely are two or three methods – not to mention four – simultaneously used to stimulate the development of independent living skills. It is therefore necessary to call for increased efforts to promote independent living among people with profound disorders of intellectual development and to focus this support on autonomy, self-determination, achieving quality of life goals, and, above all, the ability to make decisions – since this is what determines true independence in life.
