Opis:
Interest in “quality of life” issues originated in the 1950s. The concept found applications in fields such as economics, social policy, medicine, sociology and psychology. Quality of life could perhaps also be an object of study for security sciences as well. Despite the continued popularity of this category, social scientists are yet to develop a commonly agreed upon definition of the concept. This paper constitutes an attempt at answering the question of whether the need for security is related to quality of life and whether it is valid to introduce a new conceptual category in the form of quality of life security. If so, then it is necessary to determine whether it is a measure that is subjective or objective. Human needs such as security and quality of life are what motivates human actions and activity. If one of the above needs is not being met, the individual become destabilised. The homogenisation and standardisation of scientific concepts would render it possible to compare data from an interdisciplinary point of view.

This paper deals with the origins, security, history of the Slovak-Ukrainian border, which in 2007 became the part of the Schengen Area. Which can be considered part of the civilizational boundaries, as well as a significant geopolitical phenomenon. We focused on this part of the Schengen border in particular, as it has been through many changes in the last century. These conditions have many impacts on everyday life of inhabitants of border area. We try to approximate the impact of borders through a partial analysis of a questionnaire survey, questions of satisfaction with the place and with life in in border villages. We also pay attention to the border definition and the national border specifically, since we regard it as a significant socio-economical phenomenon, which affects its neighbouring areas.

By now, neither socialist planned economy, nor market economy, nor the noble public environmental movements have brought reliable instruments of managing ecological aspects of the quality of life. Perhaps, it would be helpful to try to use here the methods of the concept of total quality management, so popular in business management. The main aspects of the quality of life management deriving from quality management positions are: priority of consumer requirements, which in our case means that when evaluating any projects, human interests must be considered higher than any system interests; priority of quality, which means rejecting such alternative options as the “consumer society” concept and radically ecological one, and leads to considering life period expectancy as the main target index; managing processes, not product specific- quality; involvement of all the personnel of organization (the whole population); huge role of continuous training; formalization of input and output control, including standardization and certification procedures.

Opis:
Quality of life surveys should be an important part of the comprehensive management of urban areas. This especially refers to Poland where the integration but also a competition between metropolises has just started. Positioning studies conducted in relation to the local communities living in large cities are a valuable source of information. They are a useful tool to identify the attractiveness of metropolises which helps to compare their position to other cities, diagnose potential weaknesses and the application of development strategies allowing to increase the quality of life and hence the competitiveness. The purpose of the paper is analysis of quality of life indicators in Polish metropolises and measuring their position in term of quality of life, using the selected indicators. The study was conducted on the example of 10 largest cities in Poland: Warszawa, Poznań, Wrocław, Katowice, Lublin, Bydgoszcz, Gdańsk, Kraków, Szczecin, Łódź. The selection criterion was the number of urban residents which ranges from 307 thousands (Katowice) to 1,7 million (Warszawa). It was decided that the analysis will focus on indicators that illustrate different dimensions of quality of life. The data were classified into 8 categories that reflect different aspects of quality of life in cities

Introduction. The ageing society of Poland still experiences health-related problems and increasing difficulties in receiving medical care. The initiation of telemedicine programmes can change this situation for the better. The question arises whether telemedicine is a solution that the elderly are willing to accept and take advantage of in order to raise their quality of life. Objective. The aim of the research was an investigation of the quality of life and the course of ageing among the elderly Polish population, and their openness to the notion of telemedical services. Materials and method. A questionnaire-based study was conducted in 2015 on a sample group of 312 seniors. The respondents completed the Diener Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and the subscale of Health States from Fragebogen zur Lebenszufriedenheit (FLZ) by Fahrenberg et al. Each participant gave consent to take part in the research. Results. SWLS presents a relatively stable value in the subsequent decades of old age (60–69 years, M=21.93, SD=6.25; 70–79 years, M=21.70, SD=5.52; 80+yeasrs, M=21.38, SD=5.82). The health related quality of life (the FLZ subscale) varied in the analysed subgroups (F=7.783: p=0.000) and was related to comorbidity and polytherapy. A positive attitude towards telemedicine was expressed by 40% of those surveyed. However, the need of the seniors for telemedicalservices was limited and did not exceed the 10%. Conclusions. In Poland, in ageing there still dominates the experience of multiple ailments and polytherapy, something which justifies a search for new, easily accessible, and economically sound solutions for health care. Telemedicine is a promising solution, although there is a need for definite steps to be taken to increase the willingness among geriatric patients to take advantage of telemedicine.

Opis:
Introduction: There are many indications for a stoma surgery; however, most frequently it is the severity and progression of colorectal cancer. The result of surgical procedure is frequently a stoma. In view of the increasing prevalence of colorectal cancer and delaying stoma surgery particular attention should be paid to the aspects of quality of life and adaptation to a new life situation in patients with a stoma. Purpose: To evaluate satisfaction with life and management of difficult situations in people with the stoma. Materials and methods: The study included 200 people from three provinces: Podkarpackie, Małopolska, and Zachodniopomorskie. The study was performed by means of a diagnostic survey in a form of the author’s questionnaire and two standardized tools: the SWLS (satisfaction with life scale) and the GSES (generalized self-efficacy scale). A chi-square test for independence was used for a statistical analysis. Results: The research found that for 56.5% of the respondents a stoma formation had a strong negative impact on their functioning both in personal, family and social life. In the opinion of 12.5% of the respondents intestinal stoma was the reason for giving up work. It was also found that there was a correlation between the level of satisfaction with life and education - higher education favors a higher level of satisfaction with life. Conclusions: This study showed that there is a positive relationship between the level of life satisfaction and the sense of self-efficacy. The higher self-efficacy, the higher satisfaction with life among the respondents were found.

Opis:
Introduction: Osteoarthritis an inflammatory process in the synovial membrane. These changes cause pain and joint deformities. Pharmacists can assess patients’ quality of life, which can be a good criterion for assessing analgesics treatment effectiveness and prevent the growing phenomenon of polypharmacy and self-treatment. Purpose: To answer these questions: 1) Is there a relationship between the quality of life of patients with osteoarthritis taking analgesics and those with osteoarthritis taking analgesics and implemented rehabilitation? 2) Do patients using analgesics practice polypharmacy? 3) Are patients with osteoarthritis the main consumers of painkillers? and 4) Does the use of analgesics affect the health-related quality of life of patients with osteoarthritis? Materials and methods: The study was conducted on 240 people who were divided into three groups: osteoarthritis, reference (generally healthy, occasionally taking analgesics), and control (generally healthy, no intake of analgesics). To assess the rise in analgesics consumption by patients with osteoarthritis and the phenomenon of polypharmacy, an original questionnaire was used. Results: There is a relationship between the quality of life of patients with osteoarthritis taking analgesics. Statistical analysis showed that in the years 2013-2015 the purchase of prescription analgesics and without a prescription systematically, significantly increased. Conclusions: Patients using analgesics unknowingly practice polypharmacy. In Ars Medica Pharmacies, analgesics purchases by patients with osteoarthritis grew significantly in the analyzed period, but they are not the main analgesics consumers. Use of analgesics by patients with osteoarthritis improves their health-related quality of life.

Quality of life
Opis:
The term quality of life is difficult to define accurately, because it combines many different aspects, including economic, sociological, psychological and even these belonging to political science. Reflections on the quality of life appeared somewhere half of the twentieth century and are associated with attempts to realize the idea of so-called welfare economics, calling for the achievement of such economic development of the country in which the welfare state might occur. And then came the idea that quality of life is determined by the Gross Domestic Product index. But when discussing this issue, it turned out that one must also consider the Human Development Index, indicating the perspectives of other disciplines on this issue. So, the quality of life combines among other satisfaction of life, which is determined by many other factors.

Quality of life – terminological arrangements
Opis:
Psychological well-being is treated in psychology as a constitutive element of quality of life, expressed in a subjective aspect, determining the satisfaction of the individual with personal life, or also treated as a synonymous term. Most psychological theories focus on the subjective approach, in which quality of life is understood as psychological well-being units (Bartosz, Klebaniuk, 2006; Czapiński, 2008;, Derbis, 2000; Diener, Lucas, Oishi, 2008; veenhoven, 1996, 2005; Zalewska, 2003). In this perspective, various aspects of life are assessed from the perspective of the individual who performs the assessment process using their own individual criteria. Mental well-being indicates an individual experience of contentment and happiness in life. This assessment includes both cognitive judgments about the sense of satisfaction and fulfillment, as well as emotional responses to occurring events. In this sense, psychological well-being is a broad concept that enables people to make judgments about their lives, instead of relying on external quality assessments of their own lives.

All the respondents state that nurses work done affects the occurrence of back pain, while half of the respondents thought that back pain could be a reason for temporary inability to work - 25 people (50.0%).Lifting (40.9%) and bending (30.9%) were defined as the most common activities intensifying pain. The highest percentage of respondents cope with pain by taking painkillers (31.4%). A higher severity of pain was reported in the group of patients with pain in the lumbar region of the spine. The differences obtained, however, did not turn out to be statistically significant. Conclusions. In view of the drastic increase in the occurrence of back pain among the public the emphasis should be placed on raising awareness and knowledge about the disease. Nurses are at an increased risk , therefore, the awareness of this professional group is so important.
Materiał i metody.

The largest group among the respondents were people with secondary education. The results show significant differences in the quality of life assessment domains on sex of patients. Conclusions. Among those diagnosed with depression significantly more women than men evaluate the areas of quality of life. Age does not determine significant quality of life for patients with depression.
Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono wśród pacjentów poradni zdrowia psychicznego. Zastosowano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego. W badaniach wykorzystano skróconą wersję GDS, skalę WHOQOL-Bref a także kwestionariusz ankiety własnej konstrukcji. Wyniki poddano analizie statystycznej. Wyniki.

One of the manifestations of physical activity are martial arts. Modern research also concerns the problem of treating martial arts not only as a means of self defence, sport or how one spends their free time, but also as a therapy. Therapy throu gh traditional martial arts can help treat many medical disorders. It was acclaimed that participation in the traditional martial arts promotes mental health. It was noted that the sense of self - worth and self - esteem of competence is directly related to th e time spent doing training. Current studies show that the traditional martial arts are largely effective, complementary strategy of medical care and rehabilitation of chronic diseases. By watching yet another MMA event on the TV, seeing players’ faces bei ng hit and blood flowing on their bodies, it is worth to be aware that it’s just a spectacular event. The everyday life of people concerned with martial arts is different. Often times they undertake these exercises to improve their physical fitness and the quality of life. It is followed by taking responsibility for their health and not giving it exclusively to the doctor. This results in an active and rational fight agains any disease.

The purpose of this study was to gather data from the mothers of children with Tourette Syndrome (TS), in order to examine the extent to which the existence of a child with TS in the family affected mothers’ Quality of Life (QOL). The research was conducted according to the qualitative methods. Data was collected from semistructures interviews with 50 mothers of children with TS. The interviews were analyzed using a content analysis method. Conclusions derived from the research findings found that lack of accurate diagnosis and information leaded mothers to a state of imbalance and great stress. When they were given accurate information, they seemed to be more able to advocate for the child with TS and thus preventmisunderstandings, and consequent unpleasant situations and confusion.

Objective. The objective of the study was to explain differences in the subjective evaluation of the psychological and social aspects of quality of life in a group of working and unemployed nurses and midwives. Materials and method. The survey was conducted in a group of 620 professionally-active and inactive people (315 nurses and 305 midwives), selected by random stratified-systematic sampling. The tool used to gather empirical material was the standardized questionnaire WHOQoL-100. Results. Professionally-active nurses evaluated the mental domain less favourably (M=12.33), compared with unemployed nurses (M=12.73), and the difference between average values was statistically significant (p=.043). It is also worth noting that in the group of midwives there were significant differences in each discussed domain. The unemployed respondents evaluated more positively the overall quality of life (M=14.29; p=.005) and the mental domain (M=12.85; p=.009), while the social domain was evaluated less favourably by the professionally-active midwives (M=12.73; p=.022). Conclusions. Paradoxically, those who were unemployed made slightly more positive evaluations in comparison with the professionally active. Professional work is not a factor preferably affecting the quality of life and its psychosocial dimension. The higher quality of life of the unemployed respondents may result from the buffering impact of social support.

Opis:
Introduction. Endometrial cancer (EC) is the most common gynaecological malignancy in developed countries. Effective treatment of the early stage of the disease is achieved by surgery alone. An increasing number of patients with EC become long-term survivors; therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the quality-of-life (QOL) of EC survivors. Materials and Method. A total of 328 survivors who had completed cancer treatment more than 3 years ago, and had previously completed questionnaires concerning QOL – European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and depression – Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Patients were grouped into those with surgery alone or surgery with adjuvant radiotherapy. Responses were compared with 284 healthy women who were seen for standard gynaecologic screening examinations. Results. According to the presented results, the QOL of women with EC after surgical treatment was equal to that of healthy women in the control group. Treatment with adjuvant radiotherapy influenced the QOL, with the exception of emotional functioning (p=0.028). No statistically significant differences were found in scores on the BDI-II between groups for the cognitive-affective factor, the somatic factor, or the total sum score. Conclusions. The quality of life in EC survivors approximates that of healthy controls after 3 years post-surgical treatment. Patients treated for early stage EC should be informed about the anticipated good prognosis and the low risk of psychosocial and physical long-term effects. Cancer survivors who are treated by surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy may be especially at risk for emotional functioning problems.

Purpose: Recent studies have shown that the role of social support is a predictive factor influencing the course of the disease. The current study is focused on patients’ assessment of quality of life and the relationship of the latter with perceived social support. Materials and methods: A total sample of 40 hemodialysis patients voluntarily participated in this study. Participants were recruited from two clinics in Athens and have been under hemodialysis. The measures used were the Missoula- Vitas Quality of Life Index–15 and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. For the data analysis descriptive statistics, parametric Pearson r test and Non-parametric Spearman’s rho test were used. Statistical level was set up at 0.05. Results: The results of the current study provide good quality of life of hemodialysis patients and significant statistical significance between quality of life in several domains. Conclusions: This study concludes that the participants’ assessment of quality of life is poor regarding the well-being dimension. Also, perceived social support is significantly related to quality of life

The amputation of the lower limb is a crippling procedure, which impairs both physical and mental aspect of the patient’s life and therefore, it is important to provide these patients with comprehensive health care. Patients and their families must change their lives and reorganize them, which is undoubtedly associated with a decrease in the quality of life. The aim of this study was to analyze various determinants of quality of life in patients after lower limb amputation and their impact on the physical, mental and social aspect of life. Based on the available literature, this paper discusses certain factors determining quality of life, including the presence of phantom pain and stump pain, the way patients move, independence in daily activity, occupational activity, and access to rehabilitation. Analysis of the impact of particular factors on quality of life in people after lower limb amputation may contribute to the improvement and introduction of new paradigms regarding care provided for amputees.

The issue of the quality of life considering patients with a temporary or permanent intestinal stoma, as well as the necessity for chronic parenteral nutrition at home remain a poorly understood problem. Daily care of the intestinal stoma and the need to comply with sterile procedures required for parenteral nutrition require such patients to commit their time, which secondarily is associated with the broad aspects of social and personal life. The aim of the study was to analyse the quality of life considering patients with intestinal stomas subjected to chronic parenteral nutrition, before and after gastrointestinal tract continuity restoration. Material and methods. The survey was conducted between May and July, 2014 on a group of 71 patients (33 female and 38 male) who were under the care of the Department of General Surgery and Clinical Nutrition, Warsaw Medical University, operated during the period between 2007 and July, 2014 with a present stoma (32 patients - 45%), as well as after stoma closure (39 patients - 55%). The analysed questionnaire contained 31 questions, and the SF-36 questionnaire was additionally used, determining the quality of life. Results. Analysis of the study material showed differences in the quality of life, considering three most important determinants. Significantly worse assessment of the quality of life was reported by patients with a stoma and subject to intravenous nutrition (83.2±30.5), as compared to those after stoma closure subject to normal nutrition (52.3±33.8). Based on the SF-36 questionnaire differences between patients with a stoma and those without amounted to t(69)=2.84 (p=0.006) demonstrating that those with a stoma reported a lower quality of life. Analysis between younger and older patients, based on the SF-36 questionnaire (t(62.87)=2.49; p=0.016) showed that younger patients achieved lower results, considering dissatisfaction with life (61.55±27.5), as compared to the elderly (80.8±36.9). Conclusions. The group of patients without a stoma seem to be more independent- the vast majority do not use the help of family members (43.6%), or friends (64.1%). Patients with a stoma more often withdraw from social life. The factor that mostly reduces the quality of life is the presence of a stoma, which impairs daily functioning a lot more than the sterile procedures associated with parenteral nutrition. All patients after stoma closure consider that their overall functioning has significantly improved.

The aim of this paper is the description of direct relationships between selected work stressors and the sense of firefighters’ quality of life, as well as the analysis of the role of two variables mediating in this relationship. One is social support – the moderator, the other is sense of locus of control – the mediator. Czapiński’s “onion” theory of happiness and JD-R model were the theoretical base to generate research problems and hypotheses. The received results confirm a direct negative relationship of stressors (interpersonal conflicts, quantitative workload and organizational constraints) and a positive relationship of perceived support and the sense of quality of life. As expected, in the relationship stressors – sense of quality of life, the support turned out to be the moderator and the sense of locus of control the mediator. This paper discusses the circumstances of the moderator and mediator effect.

Quality of life is an assessment of well-being, a sense of happiness and life satisfaction. Persons with disabilities, due to their state of health and physical condition, are characterized by a lower quality of life than non-disabled people. Many factors affect the level of life quality, including socio-economic and legal regulations. This article presents the situation of disabled people in selected European countries, with particular emphasis on the legal regulations relating to people with disabilities. It can be concluded that German and Norwegian legislation is more favorable to the disabled than Polish one.
Jakość życia to ocena odczuwanego dobrostanu, poczuciu szczęścia i zadowolenia z życia.

Introduction. A factor that conditions the perception of the quality of life (QoL) is having a social network and relationships within it. The quality of life of seniors is assumed to be at a higher level if they are surrounded by those close to them in comparison to those living alone. The aim of the study was to assess differences in the quality of life of elderly rural residents depending on their family status. Materials and method. Due to the random and mixed selection of respondents, the study comprised a group of 588 representatives living in rural areas of Eastern Poland. The differentiated criterion of the groups of senior respondents was their family situation: living with a family or living alone. Assessment of the quality of life was conducted by means of the WHOQoL-bref questionnaire. The Mann-Whitney tests and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to carry out statistical analysis of the data. Results. The respondents who lived with their families differed statistically to a significant extent (p<0.005) from those who lived alone. The former gave a better assessment of the majority of the QoL domains: physical, psychological and social. Obtaining higher mean values for the environmental domain among the respondents living alone (M=14.31) seemed to be an atypical and interesting phenomenon because seniors living with their relatives usually assessed that dimension better than those living alone. Conclusions. The family situation of seniors affected the level of quality of life. Living with their relatives may be expected to be favourable for seniors because it translates into better performance in physical, psychological and social domains. Loneliness, which frequently accompanies old age, leads to the deterioration of the quality of life.

the Subjective Quality of Life Analysis
Opis:
Quality of life (QoL) is strongly influenced by an individual’s health. The lack of population studies measuring the QoL of people with physical disabilities (PD) and people who are deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) encouraged us to consider conducting this research. The aim of this study was to compare the satisfaction with quality of life indicators (QoLI) and domains (QoLD) between people with PD and people who are D/HH. This study included 315 individuals with disabilities, concretely with PD and hearing impairments. Participants were divided into two groups based on participation in physical activities: active (people with PD, n=73; people who are D/HH, n=52) and inactive (people with PD, n=77; people who are D/HH, n=113). The second part of Subjective Quality of Life Analysis (S.QUA.L.A.) between active and inactive members with disabilities was used. The Pearson chi-square test was used to determine the differences in satisfaction with 23 QoLI and 5 QoLD (general health, physical health and level of independence, psychological health and spirituality, social relationships and environment) between the two groups (active and inactive) within each population with disabilities. We found significant differences between active and inactive people with PD only in 3 from 23 QoLI and only in one from 5 QoLD. On the other hand active people who are D/HH presented significant higher satisfaction with 11 QoLI and with 4 QoLD as well as significant higher level of overall QoL (p<.05) comparing inactive individuals with the same disability. This evaluation of the satisfaction with QoLI and QoLD by S.QUA.L.A. shows that it is a suitable tool to asses QoL in the population with different kinds of disabilities. The results of our study confirmed that regular participation in sport increases QoL, especially in people who are D/HH.

palliative care
quality of life
cancer
Opis:
Introduction. Current definition by WHO from 2002 defines palliative care as a way of acting that aims at enhancing the quality of patients’ and their families’ lives who face problems concerning a life-threatening disease. Those actions include: preventing and soothing pain, early identification of any problems, the best possible assessment and pain healing combined with curing other physical, psycho-social and mental problems. Palliative care is only to a small extent based on scientific evidence as it is associated with numerous practical, ethical and emotional problems. There is an ethical imperative to provide patients with the best possible care. Nonetheless, the only possible way to improve the quality of palliative care is to conduct such scientific research and draw right conclusions that would consequently lead to the improvement of patient care and therefore to the improvement of patients’ lives. The paper describes the nature of cancer, characterizes particular issues occurring at its advanced stage and defines the character and scope of palliative care. It also covers the quality of medical care at the palliative wards which significantly affects lives of the patients who are treated there. Aim. This paper is aimed at evaluating the quality of palliative care provided at a full-time ward of a hospice and defining the factors that are crucial for improving the quality of life of the sick as well as drawing right conclusions which will then result in improving palliative care and the quality of patients’ lives. Results. The analysis of our research regards the assessment of the quality of medical care at the hospice ward and its effect on the quality of patients’ lives. Material and methods. The research was based on a survey with the use of a questionnaire prepared by the author. The research included two groups of patients. The first group consisted of relatives of the patients treated at the full-time ward of the hospice (50 people). The second one consisted of volunteers (52 people). Conclusions. The improvement of the quality of care as well as of patients’ lives is affected by efficient and fast work of an interdisciplinary team that consists of a doctor, a nurse, a priest, a psychologist, a physiotherapist and a volunteer. The team is supposed to react quickly to the patient’s complaints and problems. The research analysis has indicated that the quality of the medical care at the full-time hospice ward is high level one. Such a high level is worth being sustained as it significantly affects patients’ quality of lives and their better functioning in a difficult life situation.
Materiał i metody. W badaniach posłużono się metodą sondażu diagnostycznego. Narzędziem badawczym była ankieta własnej konstrukcji. Badaniem objęto dwie grupy osób. Pierwszą stanowiły rodziny chorych pacjentów przebywających na oddziale stacjonarnym hospicjum (50 osób). Drugą grupę stanowiła grupa wolontariuszy (52 osoby). Wnioski.

Opis:
Introduction: Quality of life can be determined by a number of factors, including subjective perception of various spheres of health and health-unrelated factors. Purpose: To compare the quality of life of women who had breast cancer one month and one year after mastectomy, and to verify the usefulness of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scales in early identification of patients having problems in various functional spheres. Materials and methods: The study included the group of 110 mastectomized women. Quality of life of the participants was estimated with EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-BR23 questionnaires. Results: Global health status (QoL) determined with the aid of the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire turned out to be significantly higher in women surveyed one year after mastectomy than in those examined one month after the surgery (74.23 vs. 58.33, p<0.001). Moreover, the two groups of patients differed significantly in terms of physical, cognitive, social and role functioning scores. Most of the symptoms assessed were resolved within a year after the breast cancer surgery. No significant intergroup differences were revealed with regard to emotional and socioeconomic functioning or future perspective scores. Conclusions: Quality of life of most mastectomized women improves considerably within one year after the surgery. The use of quality of life instruments can be useful in early postoperative identification of patients who score low on functional and symptom scales. Such patients require support and/or psycho-oncological treatment during the early postoperative period. Quality of life of breast cancer patients during the early postoperative period can be a predictor of this parameter in a longer-term perspective.

The article presents the results of empirical research carried out at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Rzeszów in 2009 and in 2018. The research was conducted on representative samples of adults living in Rzeszów (more than 500 people in 2009 and more than 600 people in 2018). The article focuses on the analysis of factors that determine the rank of the city, its position as well as objective and subjective factors of the quality of urban life. An attempt was made to reflect on the most valuable capital determining the future of Rzeszów – its inhabitants. Therefore, their civic activity, social capital, the current perception of the city's problems, its strengths and disadvantages and the various elements that make up the assessment of the quality of life in the city were analyzed. The main focus was on examining selected subjective aspects of the quality of life based on the opinions of the inhabitants of Rzeszów. Therefore, the overall level of satisfaction with the life in the city and the feeling of being able to meet the specific needs of the inhabitants of Rzeszów, the conditions and opportunities offered by the city, the sense of security, the quality assessment of – among others – cultural and educational offer, medical care, and the public transport were all examined. Altogether, these aspects undoubtedly constitute useful material for local governments managing a city which aims to be a metropolis, not only regionally or nationally, and can also serve as useful material for showing the diversity of research subjects and research approaches regarding local government units.

The sense of security is the subject of scientific research and is analyzed by various government institutions and non-governmental organizations. In the research context, it refers to both the subjective feeling of individual security and social security. The results of individual studies should be a source of inspiration for political decision-makers and people in power, both at the government and local levels, in the process of developing programs for shaping security in local communities. A high level of subjective sense of security directly affects the quality of social and individual life. In addition, test results can play an important role in assessing the accuracy of diagnosis, helping to identify the most important concerns of the individual and society. This information is necessary to effectively shape strategies aimed at improving the quality of life and safety of citizens.

The article is based on the results of a survey. Responses concerning subjective quality of life indicate that the residents of the studied regions are in their vast majority satisfied with the whole of their lives. The respondents believe that they themselves have a major impact on the quality of their lives. The conducted cluster analysis allowed for distinguishing of three groups of respondents who differed in their opinion on who should have a quality of life comparable or better than that of the respondents (family, friends, friends, all residents). Subsequent analyzes allowed to identify differences in the hierarchy of values of particular groups.

Opis:
Introduction. The main reason of the emergence of enteric stoma is colorectal cancer. Enteric stoma is a serious health, as well as life problem. In Poland, there are about 6,000 stoma surgeries yearly. It changes the functioning of patients, restricts their daily activity and influences their quality of life significantly. Therefore, in the modern treatment process, all spheres of human life and its surroundings are considered. The evaluation of the quality of life and the level of acceptance of the disease enables us to identify the regions in which patients require attention and help, as well as places to which health promotion among patients with a stoma should be directed. The aim of the study was the evaluation of the acceptance of the disease and the quality of life in patients with colostomy. Material and methods. The study conducted between February 2015 and February 2016 included101 patients with enteric stoma of the Provincial Specialist Hospital in Wrocław at Kamieńskiego St. in the departments of General Surgery with the Subdivision of Traumatology and Orthopedic Surgery, Subdivision of Metabolic Surgery, Subdivision of Endocrine Surgery and Oncological Surgery . Two anonymous questionnaires, i.e., health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and acceptance of illness scale (AIS), were used. 60% (61 people) were women, and 40% (40 people) were men. The mean age was 48; the youngest respondent was 20 years old, and the oldest was 79 years old. 17% of the respondents had primary education, 25% - vocational, 33% - secondary and 26% - university-level. Results. The most common reason for the emergence of a stoma among the respondents was colon cancer (44%), followed by: mechanical bowel onstruction (26%), intestinal damage following injuries (25%), inflammatory bowel disease (6%). The quality of life of patients with colostomy was evaluated in view of their health condition, postoperative recovery, everyday limitations, and self-evaluation. The majority of participants pointed to the deterioration of their quality of life. A higher level of acceptance of the disease was revealed in men as 75% of men, and 61% of women acceptted their health status. The education level also influences the acceptance of the disease, as 41% participants with higher education, and only 6% participants with primary education did not accept their health status. We revealed some social factors influencing the quality of life and the acceptance of the disease, i.e., gender, age, education, job, and place of living. Conclusions. Gender and education have an impact on the level of the acceptance of the disease, but they do not influence the quality of life. The acceptance of the disease is connected with the quality of life in patients with a stoma. The higher the level of acceptance of the disease, the better the quality of life. Research indicates the need to deepen patients’ education regarding their functioning in society.

Opis:
According to the statement of the World Health Organization, the quality of life is the individual’s perception of their position in life in the context of given standards and value systems and in relation to their accomplishments, expectations and concerns. In the past twenty-five years, the role of quality of life assessment in medicine has been growing. Health-related quality of life is the self-assessment of patients with respect to the influence of a disease and treatment on the functioning in basic aspects: physical, mental, social and spiritual. The quality of life measure is a very useful tool for the assessment of the value of medical procedures. Quality of life is measured using the QALY index (quality-adjusted life years), which is the average further duration of life adjusted by the limitation of activity due to a disease or disability. Each medicinal technology, the costs of which are reimbursed from public funds, is subject to pharmacoeconomic assessment, and QALY is one of its elements. Quality of life is significant for patients but it is difficult to express in methodological categories. The basic evaluation methods include patient-reported outcomes of treatment with the use of one-dimensional analogue, numerical and verbal scales or multidimensional questionnaires.
Jakość życia uwarunkowana zdrowiem to samoocena chorego odnośnie do wpływu choroby i stosowanego leczenia na funkcjonowanie w podstawowych aspektach: fizycznym, psychicznym, społecznym i duchowym. Do mierników jakości życia należy wskaźnik QALY (quality-adjusted life years), czyli przeciętne dalsze trwanie życia skorygowane o ograniczenie aktywności w wyniku choroby lub niepełnosprawności.

The concept of life span assumes that old age is a period of development being a balance of gains and losses. Aging goes hand in hand with increasing losses and decreasing gains. The system theory perceives a human being as a psychophysical system which can be easily seen in critical periods, e.g. old age. Thus, it is assumed that psyche and soma are interdependent. Taking into consideration the way old age is perceived, the balance of way and the feeling of life control, one may assume that these factors may influence physical abilities and somatic health of an organism. Old age is not an illness but increased vulnerability to illnesses. Speaking objectively, one may say that age as a feature of getting old weakens the immunological system of the organism in a natural way and thus it increases the vulnerability to a variety of illnesses and decreases physical abilities. It is possible to avoid the physiological processes connected with aging. One may hypothesize, however, that a positive approach towards old age, good balance of life and a feeling of internal control slow down the processes of aging of cells and vice versa. The overall aim of slowing down these processes is not to prolong human life but to increase the quality of life. The research carried out was based on the assumption that the way a person sees his or her life, the balance of life and the feeling of control go hand in hand with physical agility. The research covered 436 people, i.e. 120 men and 316 women, all of them over 60. A set of mutual relationships of the indicated variables was determined and an analysis of repeated regression was made. The conclusion is: better balance of life and better positive self-image go hand in hand with better physical agility of the examined individuals. It is difficult to say which of the factors are primary or secondary. It seems that there is an interdependence.

In the last few decades, the topic of quality of life has been of interest to the theorists as well as social life animators. Many studies consider two dimensions of this quality: subjective and objective. The present paper discusses the problem of subjective quality of life. Our aim is to diagnose the mental well-being of Lodz residents. Questions about general life satisfaction and satisfaction in particular fields and spheres of life such as: family, income, housing, ability to fulfil one’s needs, etc., have become the empirical determinant of the analyzed dimension of quality of life. An exploratory analysis of the studied phenomenon allows us to determine the level of subjective quality of life of the studied community. In addition, we attempt to determine the attributive conditions of the phenomenon.

Introduction. The Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index (WOSI) is a patient reported outcome measure to assess the impact of unstable shoulder on various spheres of a patient’s life. The aim of this paper is to present the stages of linguistic adaptation of the English version of the WOSI questionnaire into the Polish version (WOSI-PL). Material and methods. The research used the procedure of translation of research tools recommended by Mapi Research Institute, which allows to minimize errors resulting from the translation. Results. Two versions of the translation were created: A1V and A2V, and based on them, a common version BV was agreed. An English native speaker made a back translation version – BTV. Next, the BTV was compared with the source version SV, corrections were made and the CV version was created. Based on the analysis of experts’ assessments, a DV version was agreed, then evaluated by a group of 6 patients. The patients’ responses was analyzed, and the final version – WOSI-PL was created. Conclusion. The WOSI-PL constitutes a valuable tool to evaluate health-related quality of life in patients with shoulder instability. The questionnaire before being introduced to scientific research and clinical practice will be subjected to a validation process in order to evaluate psychometric properties.

Opis:
Introduction. As far as medical sciences are concerned, the definitions of the quality of life are mainly related to the correlation between health and the disease, but despite the great interest in this category, the universal definition adopted by the whole medical community has failed. Hypertension is a civilization disease which affects in particular residents of highly developed countries. Epidemiological findings clearly indicate that hypertension is one of the most important risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Risk factors for the progression of hypertension include both modifiable factors such as the patient's life style, environmental factors, as well as non-modifiable ones such as innate features that present a risk of susceptibility to certain diseases or disorders in health. For the purposes of the analysis, it was assumed that the gender, age of the patient, place of residence, duration of illness and BMI index may have a significant correlation with the subjective quality of life assessment. Aim. The aim of the study is to evaluate the quality of life of patients with hypertension in the environment and their satisfaction with their health condition by analyzing selected risk factors. Material and methods. The study included 100 patients of the Medical Center "Nad Brdą" in Bydgoszcz, diagnosed with hypertension. The quality of life was measure dusing the Polish version of the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Whereas in order to know the socio-demographic factors of the patients, our own questionnaire was included. Statistical analysis was performed by means of Statistica 10.0. The significance level p≤ 0.05 has been adopted. Results. The largest group of respondents assessed the quality of their lives positively - 64.0% (good and very good), the least negative - 4.0%. Satisfaction with health, the majority of respondents assessed as average - 48.0%, whereas the least negative - 13.0%. A slightly higher quality of life assessment (due to lower standard deviation) was observed in the group of women. As regards the impact of respondents' age on the quality of life, the highest scores were observed in the agegroupsranging51-60 years and 41-50 years, and the lowest in the age group under 40 years. Satisfaction with health was highest among respondents aged 40 and 51-60 years, the lowest in the age group over 60 years. There were no statistically significant differences observed between rural and urban residents regarding both the quality of life and satisfaction with health. The duration of suffering from hypertension was not in statistically significant correlation with both the quality of life and satisfaction with health (p> 0.05) in all groups surveyed the result was positive. The BMI index however, was in statistically significant, low correlation with life satisfaction results (p <0.05). Conclusions. 1. Patients with hypertension assess the quality of their lives as good. Where as their health condition is assessed as average. 2. There was no difference observed in the quality of life of patients with hypertension according to gender. 3. Respondents over the age of 60 indicate lower satisfaction with health and the quality of life than other age groups. 4. City and village residents do not show any significant difference in the quality of life assessment. 5. Patients with hypertension lasting over 20 years evaluate the quality of life lower than other age groups. 6. Patients with hypertension tend to be overweight. Over weight patients and those with obesity assess the quality of life lower than the respondents with correct BMI.
Materiał i metody. Badaniem objęto 100 pacjentów Zakładu Opieki Zdrowotnej Centrum Medyczne „Nad Brdą” w Bydgoszczy, ze zdiagnozowanym nadciśnieniem tętniczym. Pomiaru jakości życia pacjentów dokonano przy użyciu polskiej wersji kwestionariusza WHOQOL-BREF. Natomiast w celu poznania czynników socjo-demograficznych chorych do badania włączono ankietę własną. Analizę statystyczną przeprowadzono przy użyciu programu Statistica 10.0. Przyjęto poziom istotności p≤ 0,05. Wyniki.

Drawing on Simone de Beauvoir’s call for a change perspective on old age, as perceive, this article reviews the literature for factors and aspects that influence the quality of life of the elderly. Simone de Beauvoir saw old age as the individual’s unending struggle with the indifference that elderly people encounter, and with pain and illnesses. The improvement in the situation of the elderly cannot be accomplished by merely raising pensions and providing fair housing; rather it is necessary to have a more profound change – a change of life (de Beauvior, 1996). Hence, improving the quality life of elderly people necessitates a more holistic approach, that considers physical functioning, mental, social, environmental and cognitive condition in addition to traditional aspects involving health and economic aspects.

Objectives To assess the impact of patient education on medication adherence and quality-of-life (QoL) in Hungarian subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Study Design Longitudinal, non-interventional study conducted at three pulmonology outpatient centers in and around Budapest, Hungary. Experimental Subjects visiting the center with COPD were invited to participate in the study. Data collected at baseline included subject demographics, medical history, and responses to the adherence (Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 (MMAS-8)) and QoL (EuroQoL-5D-5L (EQ5D), St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), and COPD Assessment Tool (CAT)) scales. Subjects were also provided with patient education designed with standardized content. Subjects were asked to provide responses to adherence and QoL scales again at the 3-month follow-up visit. Medication was left unchanged during the course of study. Statistical analysis included independent and paired-samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, mixed-measures ANOVA and ANCOVA. Results Mean (± standard deviation (SD)) overall adherence score on MMAS-8 scale increased from 6.72 (± 1.46) at baseline to 7.01 (± 1.15) at follow-up (P = .040). A similar increase in mean (± SD) score was observed for question 4 on the MMAS-8 which deals with remembering to carry COPD medication when leaving house (baseline = 0.81 (± 0.40) versus follow-up = 0.89 (± 0.31); P = 0.018). Conclusions Patient education has a positive outcome on medication adherence in subjects with COPD. Further studies will be required to assess if these benefits are translated to patients’ QoL.

Opis:
Liver transplantation has become one of the most effective treatments for end-stage renal disease. For patients, however, the decision to have orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) is often made in an effort to improve their quality of life and to reduce their risk of mortality and morbidity. Quality of life is an important aspect of therapy for transplant patients because this category reflects the subjective evaluation of one's own life in the physical, psychological and social dimensions. One of the means to achieve a better quality of life is not only good health, but also physical activity. Physical activity has been demonstrated to be of significance not only in the assessment of fitness levels but also could be of importance in long term recovery process after major surgical operations. The aim of this study was a review of literature showing the improved quality of life in patients after liver transplantation as well as the influence of physical activity on their physical health, mental health and quality of life after transplantation. Longitudinal data showed remarkable improvement of common domains of QOL comparing pre- and post-transplant items. Gender, occupation and regular physical activity have an influence on the quality of life after liver transplantation.

Purpose: To characterize the symptoms of urinary incontinence of women suffering from pelvic organ disorders (POP) and the effect of these problems on quality of life (QoL). Materials and methods: 215 women from rural regions diagnosed with POP were examined. The research implemented the Life Satisfaction Questionnaire (LISAT-11), used to assess quality of life; the Sexual Quality of Life-Female (SQoL-F) questionnaire, which was employed to assess sexual activity; and the Gaudenz-Incontinence questionnaire, served to assess the occurrence of symptoms of urinary incontinence as well as to define the type of urinary incontinence and its degree of escalation. Results: The average age of the participants was 54.8 years. Most of the participants had urinary incontinence (159; 73.95%). Women with POP and symptoms of urinary incontinence achieved a lower indicator of the sexual function QoL (median - 61.00) when compared to those not suffering from urinary incontinence (median- 78.00). Differences between the groups were statistically significant (p=0.002). The general indicator of QoL for women with symptoms and those without symptoms of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) did not reveal any significant differences between the groups (p=0.643). Conclusions: Urinary incontinence in women with disorders of pelvic floor muscle functions has an insignificant effect on general QoL, whereas it has a decidedly negative impact on sexual function QoL.

Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most frequent arrhythmias. In Poland, there is a risk of developing AF in about 400,000 people. Atrial fibrillation occurs most frequently as a result of disorders of physiological automatism and afterdepolarization and triggered activity. The treatment strategy of AF is based on pharmacological treatment and procedures such as ablation or cardioversion. The quality of life as defined by the WHO is an individual perception of one's well-being. On the other hand, the assessment of the quality of life in illness is modified regarding health problems. Purpose: The main goal of the study was to get to know the quality of life of people with atrial fibrillation. Materials and methods: The research was carried out using a diagnostic survey, based on a survey among 100 patients diagnosed with AF. The place of the research was the Regional Specialist Hospital in Biała Podlaska, in the Emergency Department. Results: Increased morbidity was observed among women and people over the age of 60. The majority of patients with AF declared the quality of life at the medium level. The respondents most often followed medical recommendations. The majority of respondents did not follow healthy lifestyle rules, because as many as 68% of respondents did not do any physical activity and a significant part of the respondents smoked cigarettes and had an inflated BMI. Conclusion: AF affects the quality life by causing sadness, irritation and insomnia.

Opis:
The author draws attention to the phenomenon of synergy in the multidimensional act of consumption, one in which the buyer takes into account the principles of sustainable development. It indicates the challenges faced by consumption in postmodern society. Sustainable development can be seen as an alternative in synergy. This is an opportunity for both present and future generations. This study points to the rather "fashionable" concept of sustainable consumption at present. Using the theory of Bauman's vision of postmodernity of Goffman's vision of social roles, the author tries to draw attention to the synergy in the optimal, conscious and responsible use of available natural resources, goods and services, which will contribute to the increase in the quality of life of contemporary and future generations.

Opis:
Introduction: Rectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies in developed countries. However, despite the increasingly better preoperative diagnostics, adaptation of surgical techniques to the location and advancement of the tumor, the combination of surgical treatment with neoadjuvant therapy and adjuvant treatment, standardized control tests, Poland still has not obtained satisfactory results regarding long-term survival. In addition, the effects of the therapy often differ significantly from those expected by patients and the doctors treating them. Aim of the study: To evaluate the effects of rectal cancer treatment among patients of the General and Oncological Surgery Clinic of the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. The impact of numerous factors on postoperative quality of life was analyzed. Material and methods: Between 2007 - 2015, 263 radical resection procedures were performed in patients with diagnosed rectal cancer. Retrospectively, based on medical records, a database was created covering a range of clinical data. Information about death dates of some patients was obtained at the Registry Office in Szczecin. A survey supplementing clinical data and standardized quality of life assessment forms (EORTC QLQ - C30 and CR29) were sent to 120 living patients. A telephone conversation was carried out with some patients who did not respond to the surveys. Finally, data from 90 people was collected, which represents 75% of the patients enrolled in the study. Patients quality of life was assessed using EORTC questionnaire evaluation guides. Results: The patients quality of life worsened the most as a result of anorectal dysfunction. Incontinence of gases and stool, urgency and difficulty in defecation were demonstrated primarily in patients undergoing low rectal resection and irradiation. Patients undergoing radiotherapy, as a result of persistent low anterior resection syndrome, were forced to partially or completely withdraw from professional activity and to limit the pursuit of their interests. Their contacts with family, friends and acquaintances have also deteriorated. The presence of the intestinal stoma significantly affected the deterioration of the reception of the body's own image. However, no relation was found between the existence of the fistula and other aspects of the patients everyday life, including functioning in life and social roles. Conclusions: Due to the acceptable postoperative quality of life of patients with fistula and numerous imperfections of sphincter preserving techniques, operations resulting in terminal ostomy should not be considered as an extremity, and in the case of tumors of the lower rectum with unaffected sphincters, they should be considered as alternative methods for low anterior resection.

Breast cancer often requires combined oncologic treatments, the base of which is surgery. Quality of life (QoL) after each surgical procedure may influence the process of decision making among women, who qualify for multiple oncological strategies. Our knowledge about QoL in breast cancer patients is derived from comparative studies. Results may differ, depending on country, culture, and societal relations. The aim of the study was to investigate the quality of life of Polish patients treated with breastconserving therapy (BCT) or mastectomy with breast reconstruction. Material and methods. The study involved women who underwent surgery for breast cancer in the Department of Surgical Oncology of the Gdynia Oncology Center from September 2010 to November 2013. Eighty-two breast reconstructions (in 79 patients) and 226 BCT procedures were performed. QoL was measured with the use of EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR23 questionnaires. Results. Global QoL was high in both groups and did not differ significantly. Body image was slightly better after BCT than after mastectomy with breast reconstruction, but sexual QoL was lower. Future perspective was quite low in both groups. Disease symptoms were not bothering. Conclusions. The global QoL among Polish breast cancer patients treated with BCT or mastectomy with breast reconstruction is high and does not differ between groups. There is a need for anxiety and disease-related fear prophylaxis and for the improvement of sex life of breast cancer survivors.

Selection of the treatment method in breast cancer patients and its consequences may affect their quality of life through somatic, psychical, and social factors. The aim of the study was early evaluation of the quality of life of women after mastectomy vs. breast conserving surgery. Material and methods. The study included 100 women aged 31 to 79 years (mean: 57) who underwent surgery due to breast cancer (amputation: 52; breast conserving surgery: 48 women) at the Cancer Centre in Bydgoszcz in 2014. The QLQ C-30 and QLQ BR-23 questionnaires were used to evaluate the quality of life of the patients 3 months after surgery. Results. In the Global Health Status/QoL domain, the mean score for women after amputation and breast conserving surgery was 49 and 53, respectively; for Physical Functioning, the scores were 70 and 75, and for Role Functioning, 62 and 68, respectively. For Cognitive Functioning, the mean score was 74 and 73; for Emotional Functioning - 62 and 68, and for Social Functioning 64 and 60, respectively. The difference in the arm symptoms domain was significant at 46 and 33 points, respectively (p = 0.004). The patients treated with breast conserving surgery had a better body image than women after amputation - the mean score was 52 and 66, respectively (p = 0.01). Conclusions. With respect to Global Health Status/QoL and Physical Functioning, the quality of life of women in the early postoperative period was similar in women after breast amputation and those who underwent breast conserving surgery. Patients treated with breast conserving surgery had a better score for body image, while those who underwent amputation more often suffered from arm symptoms, such as pain, oedema, and problems with raising of the limb.

Objectives: The aim of study was to investigate the association between anxiety, depression, stress and determinants of quality of life among Iranian students. Methods: The questionnaires were completed by 275 students. The random sampling was conducted in two phases, the stratified sampling which some classes were selected among different classes of faculty of health and at the second phase, in each class the number of students who had the requirements to enter in the study were selected randomly. the logistic regression to find out the association between demographic characteristics with the quality of life was run and according to the normality status of the distribution of data the parametric or non-parametric tests were used. Results: In the univariable model, the students that were living in their own homes had the odds of 2.18 times more than the others to have a higher quality of life level (95% CI: 1.07–4.45). In the multi variable model the anxiety and stress were significantly related to the quality of life and for increasing each 1 unit in the amount of anxiety and stress the odds of a better quality of life decreases 0.19 and 0.03 respectively. Even after adjusting for other covariates – in the multivariable model – both anxiety and stress were associated with the quality of life. Conclusion: It is useful for the universities to understand different aspects of the students’ lives which are under the influence of stress, anxiety and depression, and also determining the resources from which they are originated.

Opis:
The concept of life quality has been studied by specialists from a variety of scientific fields: economics, social geography, sociology, psychology, medicine, political sciences, and others. This contributes to the complementariness of the notion and broadens its interdisciplinary perspective, but on the other hand, it leads to a lack of unanimity in terms of the definition and measurement of the quality of life. Meanwhile, all developed countries in the world regard enhancing life quality as a priority of state policy. With the further advancement of our civilisation, quality of life will become a major issue in economic development. Therefore, monitoring this aspect of economic life, at both country and regional level, seems to be of particular significance. The paper aims to assess the suitability of selected methods of multivariate statistical analysis for the construction of a synthetic measure of objective quality of life. The study employs two methods of constructing synthetic measures of objective life quality: the linear ordering method - TOPSIS, and factor analysis. The results obtained by means of multivariate statistical analysis methods made it possible to create ratings of Polish and Belarusian regions in terms of objective quality of life and to further divide the regions into typological groups.

Introduction. Strokes are one of the main problems of modern medicine. In Poland, it reaches about 70,000 annually. strokes are one of the most common causes of disability and the second in terms of death rates. During the first month of the episode, every sixth patient dies, while the rest of the group are people with a deficit in independence requiring the support of third parties. The aim. The aim of the study was to assess the quality of life of patients after a stroke. Materials and methods. The study included a group of 100 patients after a stroke incident. The respondents stayed in the post-stroke rehabilitation unit. A questionnaire was used to assess the quality of life the SF-36 quality of life assessment and the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire is a standardized tool for assessing the quality of life of both healthy and sick people. Results. The obtained results concerning the general assessment of physical health on the basis of the data from the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire amounted to 30.35 ± 4.54, the general assessment of mental health was 46.02 ± 7.15. On the other hand, the general indicator of the quality of life was 38.18 ± 4.13. Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between the age of the respondents and their assessment of the quality of life in the somatic and environmental domains. The older the people, the higher the level of satisfaction with the quality of life. Statistical analysis did not show any significant correlation between the respondents' sex and their assessment of the quality of life in each of the areas. Statistical analysis showed a significant correlation between the age of the respondents and their overall assessment of mental health. The older the people, the higher the mental health rating. Conclusions. The subjective assessment of the quality of life of people after stroke in terms of reduced physical functioning and in the psycho-social aspect is directly dependent on the level of independence. A history of stroke has a negative impact on the quality of life in terms of functioning and physical limitations. Age has a significant impact on the assessment of the quality of life in the somatic and environmental fields. The older the person, the higher the level of satisfaction with the quality of life.

Aim. The aim of the article is to look for an answer to the question of whether it is worthwhile to deal only with happiness and to leave the exploration of quality of life as something which is not viable, or if it makes sense to deal with both phenomena. If so, what is the relationship between them? At the same time, we ask ourselves whether happiness and quality of life are perceived equally by people and are therefore interchangeable. Results. The answer is also confirmed by measuring the number of published articles monitored in the Web of Science. The quantification of happiness and quality of life implies that their correlation is high but not so high that they can be identified as the same. At the same time, if happiness and quality of life are different phenomena, it makes sense to deal with both. Method. The research was conducted using the face-to-face interview method. Conclusion. Happiness and quality of life, in terms of attention given to them by researchers, are quite different.  We think mistakenly that they are the same on account of the preponderance of impression given to happiness in public space.

Background. Lateral compression (LC) accounts for a wide spectrum of pelvic ring injuries (PRIs). The primary aim of this study was to assess the health-related quality of life outcomes of surgically fixed LC crescent versus sacral fractures in patients less than 50 years old after high energy trauma. Material and methods. We retrospectively reviewed the database for PRIs treated surgically from December 2011 to January 2019 at our tertiary level trauma centre. The EuroQoL-5D (EQ5D5L) questionnaire was electronically sent to all patients. Multiple linear regression was conducted to determine the predictors of quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs). Results. The study included 37 patients. The mean age was 26 SD 9.46 years. The mean duration of follow-up was 3.78 (r:1-9) years. Twenty-one (56.8%) and 16 (43.2%) patients sustained sacral fractures and crescent fractures, respectively. Multi-regression analysis showed that any patient with LC injury without a sacral fracture is expected to have a utility value of QALY= 0.876. A reduction of 0.072 units in QALYs is expected in the presence of sacral fracture. About 71% of patients with sacral fractures were able to return to work and this probability increased by 40% among patients with crescent fractures (RR=1.4, p=.015). Conclusions. 1. Younger patients with crescent fractures tend to have better quality of life (higher EQ5D and QALYs) compared to those with LC sacral fractures. 2. Moreover, patients with LC sacral fractures have less chance to return to their pre-injury level of work compared to those with crescent fractures.

They are also different kinds of CSR activities, but they could also be considered as proof of changing the economic model. The article ends with conclusions in which the author tries to answer the following question: what kind of profit could bring about the realisation of that new model.

Opis:
Materiały i metody. Badaniem objęto grupę 100 pacjentów leczonych w Szpital Lipno Sp. z o.o. , u których zdiagnozowano schizofrenię. Wiek badanych mieścił się w zakresie  18–75 lat. Narzędziem badawczym był kwestionariusz SQLS-R4 (Schizophrenia Quality of Life Scale Revision 4) poszerzony o autorską metryczkę. Wyniki.

Do badań zastosowano ankietę, kwestionariusz „Zdrowie kobiet” (WHQ) M. Hunter i kwestionariusz WHOQOL-BREF Światowej Organizacji Zdrowia.
The aim of the study was to assess the quality of life of women during middle and late adulthood. The research group consisted of 200 women between 45 and 68 years of age. The women were divided into three groups according to their experiences of menopause (presence and regularity of menstruation). In the study there were used the Women’s Health Questionnaire (WHQ) by M. Hunter, the WHOQOL-BREF Questionnaire prepared by the World Health Organization, and a self-made survey. Hormonal changes and symptoms associated with them appeared to be signifi cant for the quality of life of women in perimenopause and postmenopause. The latter group is the least satisfi ed with their health and their social well-being. Perimenopausal women most negatively evaluate their environmental welfare.

Opis:
Purpose: To assess how certain clinical symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affect the quality of life of women, their activity, and their sexual lives.Materials and methods: The World Health Organization quality of life questionnaire (WHOQOL-Bref) was used to assess the quality of life and health of 78 women diagnosed with PCOS, and the female sexual function questionnaire -28 (FSQ-28) was used to assess their sexual activity and associated disorders. Results: Among three groups of women with varying body mass indexes and aged26.93 years on average, significant differences (p<0.05) were found in quality of life. In individual domains of the WHOQOL-Bref, the median score of women with obesity was lower than that of women with normal body weight or with overweight. Women with symptoms of hirsutism showed lower quality of life than women without these symptoms, while womenwho had undergone treatment for 4–6 years experienced significantly worse quality of life than those who had undergone therapy for less than 3 or more than 6 years. In the various domains of sexual response, regression analysis showed a positive correlation (p <0 .05) between better quality of life and women’s sexual activity. Conclusions: Clinical symptoms of PCOS such as obesity and hirsutism affect women’s quality of life, as does the length of infertility treatment, whereas general quality of life affects the occurrence of disorders in women at particular stages of sexual response.

Opis:
Background: Lung cancer is one of the most common malignant diseases with high mortality. Patients diagnosed with lung cancer are most likely to exhibited psychiatric symptomatology while they experience poor quality of life. Purpose: To examine the relationship between psychological distress and quality of life (QoL) in lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted in which 110 lung cancer patients were recruited to participate. Data was collected with an anonymous self-administrated question-naire consisted by three parts: a sheet concerning demographic information, the scales Missoula Vitas Quality of Life Index-15 and General Health Questionnaires (GHQ)-28. Results: Women accounted for 51.8% of the sample, 27.3% were ≥56 years old and 24.5% were in the age between 35-44. Moreover, 38.2% were high school graduates while 46.4% were married. Age, educational level, and marital status were found to be related to patients’ perceived QoL. QoL was found to be related to psychological variables for GHQ-28. Conclusions: Quality of life can be considered to be a result of disease and treatment, as perceived by the patient and is affected by factors such as injury, anxiety, perceptions and social opportunities. This has a direct effect on patients’ functioning and ability to self-care.

Opis:
The quality of life is nowadays one of the leading socio-economic and political topics. On an urban level its importance is growing as the megatrend of urbanization is reconstructing the global map of megacities. By 2050, two-thirds of the global population will live in cities. Therefore quality of life, although difficult for objective measurement, is one of the most important issues in sustainable urban planning for cities. An important element influencing quality of life is ‘motorization’ with its positive and negative impacts. Using the example of Piotrków Trybunalski, a medium-sized Polish city that has already adopted the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, the evaluation of the quality of life is presented. Data collected in October 2019 was used. The residents were divided into segments based on intensity of their car usage. Particular segments are differentiated according to the modal split and daily mobility index of citizens. The assessment of the quality of life in Piotrków Trybunalski is quite similar for citizens with different access to car usage, although it has a tremendous impact on their modal split.

Introduction. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a neuropathy caused by pressure on the median nerve taking a course in the carpal tunnel. The characteristic symptoms of CTS are: pain, numbness, and a prickling sensation in the hand usually at night or after the physical effort. Symptoms of the disease affect patient quality of life which is desribed as a subjective estimation of life situation. Aim. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of patient life in those who suffer from carpal tunel syndrome. The studies were aimed to descripe the general quality of patient life and the effect of symptoms on individual aspects in the life of the afflicted. Materials and methods. The study sample was composed of 60 patients from rehabilitation and physiotherapy institutions located in the Lublin Voivodship (Poland). The studies were based on the questionnaries of life quality estimation dependent on health WHOQOL- BREF and EQ-5D-5L as well as on our own poll questionnaire. Conclusions. Symptoms of carpal tunel syndrome deteriorate the quality of patient life. Such patients have difficulties with daily activities. Among those examined, as many as 94.12% reported problems performing everyday actions (EQ – 5D – 5L). Difficulties with chores were reported by 86.70% of those examined. The patients with carpal tunel syndrome are less effective at work. Reduced achievements at work were reported by 73.30% of those examined, and a need for a shorter work day was reported by 60%. For 53.30%, difficulties in doing their jobs were significant; 20% of the examined had to change their profession or work station. The examined patients often experienced pain which deteriorated quality of sleep and disturbed everyday functioning. The patients were presented with serious difficulties in doing professional work.

Opis:
Nowadays, more and more fields of knowledge undertake research on homosexuality issues. Analysis of that topic takes place on many basis depending on researcher’s subject of interest. Pedagogy peculiarly concentrates, among other things, on individuals’ relations with their origin families – the combination of non-heteronormativity and functioning in family environment in the context of life’s quality is a new approach which, so far, had been poorly described. Presented article aims to deliver knowledge and findings connected to quality of life of homosexual women to extent of their relations with family members. The research was conducted in accordance with qualitative trend, mainly by individual case method. The applied technique was an interview and the data collection instrument was its questionnaire. The examined group included eight intentionally selected women that come from podlaskie and śląskie provinces. Gathered information was transcribed, coded and categorized within the scope of selected elements of construct such as life quality. Women’s statements were presented in accordance with descriptive-comparative approach, so firstly, their subjective feelings had been described and then that report was related to some objective factors. Depicted results are the part of the answer on research problem which is: ‘how interpersonal relations of homosexual women are created?’. Analysis and interpretation of gathered data show three models of relations appearing between questioned women and their families of origin, those are: acceptation of non-heteronormativity, ignorance of that sexual orientation, repression/avoidance of receiving an information about homosexuality with sporadic attempts at ‘converting’ their daughters/sisters. Women who were accepted by their families (two of them) are characterized by high subjective and objective level of life quality to extent of interpersonal relations, social life and mental condition. Those who did not ‘came out of the closet’ to their relatives (another two) and those who were rejected by them (four of them) are described as women with low level of quality of life among contacts with other people (objective factors), but some of them think differently – they describe those relations as positive. That discrepancy in evaluation might be a result of using so-called tactic of apparent mysteriousness – questioned women and members of their families pretend that homosexuality does not exist. The family relations are disordered in most cases; because of it life quality of homosexual women is lower than other members of our society. Appropriate education in terms of toleration could improve their situation, what is more, forming support groups for parents with non-heternonormative children also might help.

Previous studies indicated that poverty was linked to lower quality of life. The aim of this study is to answer on the following question: do children from families with low financial status differ in quality of life, emotions and mood from children living in families with average income? We also tested differences between children living in the city and in the countryside. 129 children aged 12-14 participated in the study. Children from families with low financial status evaluated their quality of life higher, and felt more happiness and love, as well as more positive in mood. Children from the city felt more fear than children living in the country. There were no statistically significant differences between children living in the city and country areas in quality of life and mood.

The emotional functioning of older people depends on many factors. Diverse and rich activity every day seems to be very important. Undertaking a large number of activities at an elderly age and fulfilling oneself in social roles (also ones newly started) is a condition for efficient functioning, life satisfaction, well-being and health. Older people are at risk of social exclusion, being unnecessary for others or even being a burden on one’s surroundings. Hence, support and inclusion programs for various tasks and activities become extremely important. The aim of the presented research was to present proposals and evaluate the effects of a program dedicated to seniors, which was to improve their quality of life, psychophysical and social health. The program involved 50 seniors from 2 different support centers, including 43 women and 7 men, average age 77.51 ± 9.51. The assessment used the SUPIN questionnaire (Positive and Negative Feelings Scale), MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination) and the VAS pain scale. The obtained results confirmed the beneficial effect of the proposed activation program on the psychophysical health of the respondents. All subjects increased their level of positive emotions, while the level of negative ones decreased (p <0.05), hand functionality and general well-being improved, back and pain significantly decreased.

Understanding the conditions of the ageing process accompanied by high standard of life demands to look more deeply at the elderly functioning in the context of their activity. Other important elements of life satisfaction within this life period can be individual and personal features, and self-esteem is among them. The aim is to establish if mentioned qualities are significant regarding life quality of the 55+ group age tested. This research was conducted among the participants of Third Age University. First step of the analysis was to check if and how the sample members are different in terms of their activity and self-esteem. As a result of a cluster analysis conducted on a sample two subgroups were specified, differing in terms of these qualities. The two groups were subsequently compared to each other in terms of their life quality in all four measured dimentions. The results show the existence of important statistically differences, which let us accept all the hypotheses.

One of the elements of treatment considering inflammatory bowel diseases is nutritional therapy. The duration of the above-mentioned depends on the prevalence of such symptoms as fever, bowel move-ments, length of the functioning gastrointestinal tract, stoma and intestinal fistula presence. Nutritional therapy is an essential element of successful treatment alongside pharmacological, surgical, and biological therapy, as well as other methods. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis considered as chronic diseases, lead towards physical and biopsychosocial disability, being responsible for the reduction in the quality of life. The aim of the study was to determine the quality of life after surgical procedures in case of patients diagnosed with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, subjected to natural and parenteral nutrition. Material and methods. The study group comprised 52 patients from the Department of Gastroen-terology, Military Medical Institute, and Department of Surgery and Clinical Nutrition, Clinical Hospital in Warsaw. The study was performed between October, 2011 and April, 2012. The World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument - Bref (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaire was used to deter-mine the patients’ quality of life. conclusions. A lower quality of life was observed in case of patients subjected to parenteral nutrition, poor education, disease symptoms exacerbation, in the majority-rural inhabitants. The quality of life does not depend on gender, type of disease, family status, and additional medical care.

Opis:
Introduction: The paper presents the results of the interaction analysis between physical activity (PA), joy of movement (PACES) and areas of quality of life (SQUALA) of high school students with different levels of sport performance and different ages. These factors have wider background. Phenomenon of the subjective assessment “PACES” is stepping to the foreground. “PACES” proves high frequency of interactions with the areas of SQUALA, more than a single volume of PA. Despite of enough PA in week and high level of PACES, no expected interactions with areas of SQUALA in high school students were demonstrated. The low number of positive interactions points to the necessity of monitoring this construct, also in the relation to gender, to different sports level, type of school, region, country and age. Material and Methods: The survey was attended by 16-19 years old (n = 1302) high school students. The quality of life was examined through SQUALA questionnaire, enjoyment of physical activities by the PACES questionnaire and the level of physical activity in hours per week (PAQ) and by sport level. The data are presented by the descriptive characteristics and statistical significance of the differences, respectively the interactions were evaluated by nonparametric methods. Results: The interactions between PA, PACES and SQUALA in high school students with different sports level with different ages have been proven very sporadically. Positive correlations of PA with areas of SQUALA prevails in 18 and 19 years old students. The joy of movement correlates with spiritual well-being in groups of students who carry out the physical activities occasionally and regularly. Positive interactions of joy of movement with physical well-being have not been proven. Negative interactions between the PA, PACES and SQUALA prevails between 16 and 17 years old students. Conclusion: The higher age factor and factor of the regular movement in high school students appears to be very important in this study. The results reaffirm the importance of voluntary and organized physical activities which have potential to raise the level of the joy from the movement in life of high school students.

High quality of life is increasingly regarded as the main development goal at local, regional, national and international level. Representatives of territorial units employ various strategies designed to improve the residents’ living conditions, which translates into higher quality of life. This, however, would not be possible without taking into account the opinions and preferences of the residents. Public opinion is a key element in taking actions to enhance the quality of life because it makes the management of this process more effective. This article presents the results of surveys concerning evaluation of selected aspects of the quality of life in Uniejów, such as accessibility of certain services and functioning of key institutions in the town. The findings have not only the cognitive character but can also be valuable in practical applications.

Opis:
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease. Due to a constantly growing rate of incidence and the lowering age of PD patients it is becoming a more serious social problem. The aim of this study is to assess the quality of life amongst care givers for people suffering from Parkinson's disease. The work includes research on the influence of physical rehabilitation of PD patients on the quality of life of their care givers. The research covered care givers (n=50) of PD patients diagnosed with third stage PD according to the Hoehn and Yahr classification. The diagnostics survey with a questionnaire addressed to care givers looking after PD patients was used. The questionnaire was created by the authors of this paper. The survey consisted of two parts, in which the first was to obtain basic information on the present status of the care giver, while the other was to verify life satisfaction level, using Jurczynski's Scale of Life Satisfaction. Statistical analysis showed significant differences in all analyzed statements between groups. Better effects were observed in the group participating in rehabilitation. Care for people suffering from PD affects the quality of life of caregivers. Participation in the process of rehabilitation of patients with PD improves the quality of life of caregivers.
