The implementation of environmental issues in planning and designing urban structures is becoming a novel approach and a common practice consistent with the paradigm of sustainable development. Maintaining environmental quality in urban areas, managing natural resources and understanding the complexity of urban systems is becoming increasingly challenging. Therefore, it is important to develop strategies for the integration of environmental quality research into urban planning policies and for the development of alternative spatial solutions for the existing urban structure which are aimed at improving environmental quality in urban areas. The aim of the article is to review contemporary theoretical and practical approaches towards the implementation of environmental issues within the process of urban planning in order to present a framework for local planning policies. Described is the research into spatial and design solutions which can efficiently reduce noise levels, mitigate atmospheric pollution and odour nuisance or prevent the negative effects of local microclimate effect. The possibility of application of design guidelines aimed at achieving environmental objectives in local planning documents is also assessed.

The essence of urban design is the transformation of the environment in a way that maximizes the quality of human life. The tools to achieve this goal must cope with the complexity of natural and urbanized spaces, and designers use them to anticipate future environmental states. The article presents theoretical considerations, supplemented by the practical implementation of the area in the Swarzędz community, on the relationship between the organization of urban design in the context of multi-level integration (planning, design) and the emergence of a high-quality urban environment. This process requires controlling many parallel threads between which there are dynamic changes in the relationship - the holarchy.
Istotą projektowania urbanistycznego jest transformacja środowiska w sposób zapewniający maksymalizację jakości życia człowieka. Narzędzia służące do osiągania tego celu muszą mierzyć się ze złożonością przestrzeni naturalnej i zurbanizowanej, a projektanci używają je do antycypowania przyszłych stanów środowiska. Artykuł prezentuje teoretyczne rozważania, uzupełnione praktyczną implementacją terenu w Gminie Swarzędz, na temat relacji między organizacją projektowania urbanistycznego w kontekście integracji wielopoziomowej (planowanie, projektowanie), a powstawaniem środowiska zurbanizowanego o wysokiej jakości. Proces ten wymaga kontrolowania wielu paralelnych wątków, między którymi zachodzą dynamiczne zmiany relacji - holarchii.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest metodologia badawcza evidence-based design, której głównym celem było stworzenie wytycznych projektowych oraz programu funkcjonalnego dla obiektu szpitala, a także zdobycie wiedzy o wpływie środowiska medycznego na osoby chore. Opracowanie opisuje kolejne kroki badawcze, które pozwoliły na zebranie wniosków i wytycznych dla tworzenia projektu. Konkluzje posłużyły do wykonania projektu koncepcyjnego wpisującego się w nowe paradygmaty projektowania obiektów medycznych w odejściu od tradycji sterylnych, obcych przestrzeni szpitalnych.
The article concerns the evidence-based design methodology used in order to create design guidelines and a functional program for the hospital facility and to broaden the knowledge about the influence of space in medical environment on people with illness. The article guides though the research method and presents tools used to create guidelines for designing a project. Conclusions allowed creating a conceptual design which inscribes itself into new paradigms of medical design, far from the sterile, cold hospital surroundings.

In this paper, we present a macroergonomic model of work design that is applied and tested to examine Total Quality Management (TQM) in the public sector. According to the model, TQM can influence different aspects of work design and quality of working life (QWL). Questionnaire data collected in 2 public sector organizations in the USA show that TQM can have both positive and negative impact on work design and QWL. The main positive impact of TQM was found on job content, job control and participation, and social relationships. The main negative impact of TQM was on workload, uncertainty, and clarity of job duties. The impact of TQM on QWL was mixed. Our results show that the impact of TQM on work design and QWL varied very much across the 6 participating departments, as well as within the departments. Further research is warranted to assess the human impact of TQM, in particular research on the linkage between various aspects of TQM, on one hand, and work design and QWL, on the other hand.

During operation, construction machines generate high noise levels which can adversely affect the health and the job performance of operators. The noise control techniques currently applied to reduce the noise transmitted into the operator cab are all based on the decrease of the sound pressure level. Merely reducing this noise parameter may be suitable for the compliance with the legislative requirements but, unfortunately, it is not sufficient to improve the subjective human response to noise. The absolute necessity to guarantee comfortable and safe conditions for workers, requires a change of perspective and the identification of different noise control criteria able to combine the reduction of noise levels with that of psychophysical descriptors representing those noise attributes related to the subjective acoustical discomfort. This paper presents the results of a study concerning the “customization” of a methodology based on Sound Quality for the noise control of construction machines. The purpose is to define new hearing-related criteria for the noise control able to guarantee not only reduced noise levels at the operator position but also a reduced annoyance perception.

Opis:
Indoor environmental quality is a requirement for good architectural and interior design. The definition of indoor environmental quality refers to the conditions of the interior space that provide health and wellbeing for its occupants. Elements of indoor environmental quality are thermal comfort, indoor air quality, ventilation, ergonomics, natural and artificial lighting, odor, and acoustic quality. Indoor environmental quality is required in every type of interior space including ones with residential, educational, and cultural functions and workspaces. It is also included as one of the factors of energy efficient and sustainable design in building energy certification and accreditation systems. This study focuses on call center interiors as a type of workspaces, where the employees spend a long time in the interior space communicating with customers on the phone. The aim is to provide theoretical information and practical application suggestions for higher quality design in call center interiors. The methodology of this paper consists firstly of a literature review to study and analyze the definition and elements of indoor environmental quality, and its implementation into call center interiors as workspaces. Analytical studies lead to strategy proposals for better designed call center interior spaces. The results of the study indicate that better designed interior spaces in call centers lead to better health and wellbeing of the employees, resulting with higher performance and service quality.
Zapewnienie wysokiej jakości środowiska wewnętrznego budynku jest niezbędne w optymalnym projektowaniu architektonicznym oraz projektowaniu wnętrz. Definicja jakości środowiska wewnętrznego odnosi się do warunków przestrzeni wewnętrznej budynku, które zapewniają zdrowie oraz dobre samopoczucie użytkowników. Do elementów jakości środowiska wewnętrznego zalicza się komfort termiczny, jakość powietrza w pomieszczeniach, wentylacja, ergonomia, naturalne i sztuczne oświetlenie, zapachy, jakość akustyczna. Wysoka jakość środowiska wewnętrznego jest wymagana w każdym rodzaju przestrzeni wewnętrznej, w tym pełniącym funkcje mieszkalne, edukacyjne, kulturalne, a także w miejscach pracy. Jest ona również uwzględniana jako jeden z czynników efektywnego energetycznie i zrównoważonego projektowania w systemach certyfikacji oraz akredytacji energetycznej budynków. Niniejszy artykuł dotyczy wnętrz w centrach obsługi telefonicznej jako miejsc pracy, w których pracownicy spędzają dużo czasu w przestrzeni wewnętrznej, komunikując się z klientami przez telefon. Celem opracowania jest dostarczenie teoretycznych informacji i praktycznych sugestii dotyczących zastosowania wysokiej jakości wzornictwa we wnętrzach centrów obsługi telefonicznej. W niniejszym artykule wykorzystano przede wszystkim metodologię polegającą na przeglądzie literatury mającym na celu zbadanie i analizę definicji, a także elementów jakości środowiska wewnętrznego oraz jej wdrożenia we wnętrzach centrów obsługi telefonicznej jako miejscach pracy. Na podstawie badań analitycznych sformułowano propozycje strategii lepszego projektowania przestrzeni wewnętrznych w centrach obsługi telefonicznej. Wyniki badań wskazują, że lepiej zaprojektowane przestrzenie wewnętrzne w centrach obsługi telefonicznej prowadzą do poprawy zdrowia i samopoczucia pracowników, co przekłada się na wyższą wydajność oraz jakość usług.

Opis:
Many medical diagnostics and treatment procedures in the oncology, cranio-maxillofacial surgery, radiotherapy and neurosurgery deal with volumetric as well as surface data. Tumor detection or generation of the virtual treatment scene involves using complementary data sets that are obtained from different sensors, for example MR and CT data, or by the same sensor at different epochs. The very need for registration arises from the fact that the complementary data sets are acquired by imaging devices using different spatial coordinate systems or/and the anatomically correct superposition of two data instances cannot be performed without locally applied elastic transformation. The volume or surface matching is therefore an essential task in these applications. From the mathematical point of view the data aligning problem is an optimization task, which can be solved by using deterministic or non-deterministic optimization algorithms. Depending on the data size and the complexity of required matching transformation the runtime behaviour of the registration methods can stretch out between real-time and many hours' computations. In this paper various applications of the same registration paradigm are presented and discussed. The wide spectrum of the medical applications shows the importance of the registration approach for the optimization of medical diagnostics and treatment.

This article contributes to the New Urbanism debate by considering the relationship between the identity of a place and quality in architecture and urban design. It combines a general theoretical discussion and an operational analysis with a comparative study of two commercial centres: Manufaktura in Łódź (Poland) and Val d’Europe in Marne-la-Vallée (France). It concludes that while the guidelines of New Urbanism can help both private investors and public stakeholders make better strategic decisions, according to the concept of quality architecture and urban design, its framework should be applied with care for community needs and the historical character of the city.

W pracy przedstawiono propozycję oceny rozwiązań projektowych (dokumentacji projektowej) pod względem technologiczności realizacji zaprojektowanych obiektów, to jest pod względem możliwości sprawnego i efektywnego wykonania zaprojektowanych budynków, z uwzględnieniem podstawowych wymagań technologiczno- organizacyjnych. Zaproponowano model oceny punktowej, uwzględniający siedem zdefiniowanych kryteriów oceny i przeznaczony w szczególności dla oceny projektów wielorodzinnych budynków mieszkalnych.
The evaluation of building design documentation is usually limited to consideration of cost and duration of works needed to execute a designed object. However, factors as safety of works, extent of mechanization of works, and other good or bad sides of construction methods needed to be implemented as per the analyzed design, are also considered, but normally without any measures. The method presented in this paper allows to evaluate the construction methods, as specified in the analyzed design documentation, using the points assigned to seven defined evaluation criteria. The final, total number of points represents the technological quality and feasibility of the construction processes and materials specified in the evaluated design documentation.

As many research focused on robustness methodology, this paper discuss on how to implement these methodology concept from the management perspective. Guidelines and appropriate strategies are discussed on Quality Engineering (QE) implementation in an organization and experimentation. Firstly, the experience of a company implementing QE is presented. Secondly, the practical data of a laboratory experiment is discussed in order to relate between the experimental result and requirement in industry. The QE implementation is explained on the strategies used in tackling organization problems. Optimization of peel adhesion strength test is carried out to propose the feasibility of experimental design tools. QE methodology between the practical case and company's case study is compared. Finally, through the QE implementation in organization and method applied in experimental design, a framework is proposed for QE methodology. QE implementation is presented from two sources, from a company and practical case study point of view. It helps a researcher or engineer applies the management strategy and engineering tool to ensure product robustness.

W artykule przedstawiono wdrażaną metodę projektowania rekonfigurowalnych sterowników logicznych, ukierunkowaną na jakość behawioralnej specyfikacji, a tym samym niezawodność pracy. Zamierzone funkcjonowanie sterownika jest opisane z wykorzystaniem równocześnie dwóch dualnych języków graficznych: diagramu maszyny stanów UML oraz komplementarnej sieci Petriego. Synergia spowodowana dwoma wzajemnie się uzupełniającymi podejściami do behawioralnego opisu tego samego sterownika daje szansę na otrzymanie uwiarygodnionej specyfikacji już we wstępnej fazie projektowania.
In the paper quality oriented approach to the design of digital embedded reconfigurable controllers is presented. The behaviour of a logic controller is described by means of dual related graphical languages: UML State machine diagram and Petri Net graph. The first one is well accepted among designers from the electronic industry, the second one among control engineers taking the advantage from similarities between Petri nets and Sequential Function Charts (SFC). The synergy of the view from two sides into the same project gives a chance to obtain validated specification at the design process beginning. It is shown in the second paragraph. Comparison of elementary models (Tab. 1) and design process with use of the dual specification (Fig. 1) are also presented. The third paragraph deals with mutual conversion of the elementary elements (Tab. 2) and shows their subsets in the form of class diagrams (Figs. 2 and 3). An example of the logic controller dual specification (Figs. 4 and 5) is given in the fourth paragraph. The practical use of dual specification is contingent upon implementation of tools for performing the conversion process in an automatic way.

The article is devoted to the problem of specification of approaches to the design and implementation of electronic educational courses in conditions of continuously and dynamically changing digital information and learning environment of the modern university. Based on the results of the content analysis of the digital infrastructure and regulatory documentation of the Siberian Federal University and the discursive analysis of the leading trends in the field of digital education, necessary conditions for a successful professional pedagogical activity are described. On the basis of smart education principles, possible solutions to the problems of teaching at university, such as personification of teaching, project-oriented courses and initiating the launch of mechanisms for students’ informal self-education are synthesized and justified.

In surveys, non-sampling errors, due to their complex nature, are more challenging to quantify compared to sampling errors. Avoiding the release of these errors, however, results in biased survey estimates. In our previous paper, we devised the best interviewer allocation technique by using a nested experimental design to study response error estimation. In this study, in order to illustrate the effectiveness of this methodology in a different context, we apply it in interview-reinterview surveys relating to the time use and life satisfaction of academicians at Middle East Technical University, Turkey. An analysis of the pilot survey data showed that only half of the data was reliable, while the other half revealed interviewer effects. Prior to the main survey, interviewers underwent training in the course of which particular emphasis was put on the above-mentioned questions. In effect, the previously observed response variances which accounted for the total variance and data unreliability, were reduced considerably, increasing the quality of the main survey.

The article presents the results of the evaluation of the relationship between the way of shaping public space related to ensuring sustainable mobility in the city and the experiences of users influencing the perceptible quality of life. The assessment was carried out for one of the medium-sized cities, which was included in the list of cities threatened with exclusion. The subject of the evaluation was the city multimodal centreorganised around the railway station in Nysa. The aim of the research was to identify a selected, small group of key challenges and recommendations aimed at improving user experience in using a multimodal centre in the city. The article highlights the role of service infrastructure (stops, stations, transfer centres) in the ecosystem of sustainable urban mobility. Each element of this ecosystem (designed in accordance with the idea of universal design) can have a significant impact on the improvement of the perceptible (declared) quality of life in the city, if the applied solutions positively influence the user’s experience (including the sense of comfort and care). The authors focused on the current state of play in order to identify the key areas of intervention needed to improve the user experience in using the multimodal centre in a small and medium sized city. Attention was paid not only to the aspect of infrastructure accessibility, but also to the relations between urban, architectural and engineering solutions in the context of their impact on the assessment of the multimodal centre in terms of its usefulness in three dimensions: functional, rational and perceptible. The summary outlines the process of achieving from the basic solution standard to interoperability. This knowledge will allow better decision making in the planning of user-oriented projects in the city. This may be of particular importance when the conscious objective of the action is to achieve the level of interoperability expected by users of facilities such as, inter alia, a multimodal centre, which is one element of an urban public space with a significant impact on the quality of life of the citizen.

Przemiany cywilizacyjne zachodzące we współczesnej Europie, ale również na całym świecie, zmuszają do nowego spojrzenia na przestrzeń publiczną. Dlatego warto przyjrzeć się bliżej tematyce projektowania uniwersalnego, która stanowi bardzo rozbudowany i wielowątkowy zasób wiedzy, a przeświadczenie o konieczności udostępniania przestrzeni publicznych spowodowało podjęcie próby uporządkowania zakresu tematycznego odnoszącego się do mebli miejskich. Artykuł przedstawia badania własne - literaturowe zrealizowane w ramach udziału w programie: Inicjatywa Doskonałości - Uczelnia Badawcza na Politechnice Śląskiej w Gliwicach, które dotyczą opracowania wytycznych dla tzw. elementów małej architektury w kontekście projektowania uniwersalnego. Na wstępnym etapie pracy zastosowano metodę analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa, dzięki której zostały określone cele pracy. Na podstawie źródeł literaturowych, analiz przykładów oraz rekomendacji projektowych zostały wskazane zasadnicze tendencje w projektowaniu mebli miejskich zgodnie z zasadami projektowania uniwersalnego. Opracowano wytyczne jako przykłady realizacji w praktyce założeń projektowania dla wszystkich - projektowania uniwersalnego oraz programu „Dostępność +”. Celem było wskazanie możliwości wprowadzenia rozwiązań przestrzennych dostępnych dla zróżnicowanych grup użytkowników wspierających osoby: z niepełnosprawnościami, starsze, z dziećmi, a jednocześnie wprowadzenie wartości, które będą służyć aktywizacji wykluczonych grup użytkowników oraz integracji międzypokoleniowej.
The civilization changes that are taking place in contemporary Europe and around the world, force one to have a new outlook on public space. Therefore, it is worth taking a closer look at the subject of universal design, which is a very extensive and multi-threaded body of knowledge. In addition to that, the conviction that public spaces need to be made accessible has resulted in an attempt to organize the thematic scope with respect to street furniture. The article presents own literature research carried out as part of the participation in the program called "Initiative of Excellence - Research University" at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, which concerns the development of guidelines for the so-called elements of “street furniture" in the context of universal design. At the initial stage of work, the literature analysis and criticizm method was used, owing to which the goals of the work were defined. On the basis of literature sources, analyses of examples and design recommendations, basic trends in designing street furniture in accordance with the principles of universal design were identified. Guidelines were developed as examples of practical implementation of design assumptions for everyone, that is universal design, and of the "Accessibility +" Act. The aim was to indicate the possibility of introducing spatial solutions available to various groups of users, supporting people with disabilities, the elderly, people with children, and, at the same time, to introduce values that will serve to activate excluded user groups and promote intergenerational integration.
