Opis:
This paper contains a description of a shock wave (called a flame when the deflagration is considered) propagation pattern impact on a motion of a barrier. Here, the numerical research was conducted on a model of a pyrotechnic actuator, hence, the piston is understood as a movable barrier. The processes occurring within the pyrotechnic actuators after ignition of a pyrotechnic propellants have been explained. The investigations are focused on the dependence of a shape of the actuator’s combustion chamber and the piston stroke time. It appears that the appropriate design of the combustion chamber can decrease the time required for a piston total stroke using this same type of a propellant. The visualization of the flame occurring due to ignition of the propellant is crucial for understanding the dependence between the construction of the actuators interior and the piston stroke time. Therefore, the approach of simulating numerically the flames aroused. The simulation was conducted on a full scale 3D model of a pyrotechnic actuator which is a detail representation of a real object on which the verification test will be conducted. However, only the flame propagation was considered here. The material of an actuators members was not investigated, hence the AUTODYN solver considered them as a single rigid bodies with its own mass and inertia.

The paper analyses information available in literature on factors influencing the parameters of pyrotechnic delay devices (PDD). The literature includes research and development reports of mostly foreign origin. The main component of PDDs is a pyrotechnic delay charge (PDC) which may consist of one or more pyrotechnic delay mixtures (PDM). The use of appropriate PDM and maintaining its required parameters during service life decides about its usefulness for the ordnance. The paper describes the factors affecting the operation of PDDs. These factors are divided into internal ones, closely related to the structure of PDDs, and external ones. Described factors affecting the operation of PDDs were additionally illustrated by test results. Collected information can be useful for people involved in designing and testing the PDDs.

This paper explains the experiment conducted in order to reveal the response of a movable wall on a shock wave generated by ignition of a pyrotechnic gas generator dedicated for the automotive industry. This same kind of a pyrotechnic gas generator was used in each test. The test station consists on a pyrotechnic actuator in which the movable wall is expressed as a piston. The pyrotechnic actuator was specially design for such type of an investigation. Its design allows withstanding numerous tests without affecting the accuracy, and it is prepared to pressure measurement in three locations on the cylinder. However, here only the pressures measured in the vicinity of a cylinder bottom are under deliberation. This paper focusses on a shape of the piston influence on its movement characteristics (i.e. stroke velocity and acceleration). The experiment has shown that there is an influence of the shape of the movable wall on its movement characteristic. Furthermore, the experiment explained here constitutes a comparison of a piston velocity and acceleration with a flat and concave front surface. The dynamic pressure measurement have proven that the reflected shock wave increases its speed affecting the piston movement.

A copolymer of chlorotrifluoroethylene and vinylidene fluoride was investigated to assess its viability as an oxidiser, for aluminium as the fuel, in an extrudable pyrotechnic composition for application in 3D printing. Experimental results and EKVI thermochemical modelling suggested that a fuel loading of 30 wt.% would provide the maximum energy output. DTA and TGA analysis were performed in order to ascertain processing limits. With the addition of a processing aid LFC-1® samples could be extruded successfully. Printing with the compositions had limited success. The high melt viscosity paired with the filament’s susceptibility to excessive preheating caused the print quality to be low. Delamination did not occur due to good fusion achieved during layer deposition. With minor compositional adjustments printing quality could be improvedy.

The bubbling behaviour originating from the combustion of pyrotechnic mixtures of KClO4/Mg-50%Al alloy, and with additives such as nitrocellulose (NC) and urotropine, were studied by high speed photography. The results revealed that with the addition of the additives the combustion pressure and the gas flow rates increased in the order KClO4/Mg-50%Al/NC (3) > KClO4/Mg-50%Al/urotropine (2) > KClO4/Mg-50%Al (1). Additionally, it is confirmed that the bubbling phenomena can be classified into various stages, i.e. single bubbling, pairing and single coalescence, double coalescence and so on.

The paper contains the description and classification of pyrotechnic actuators focusing on the automotive industry applications. This paper also explains the compatibility issues during frontal impact of a passenger car with a large truck. The construction of the pyrotechnic actuators for the "active bumper" is presented here. The processes occurring within the pyrotechnic actuators after ignition of a pyrotechnic propellants have been explained. The investigations are focused on the dependence of a shape of the actuator's combustion chamber and the piston stroke time. It appears that the appropriate design of the combustion chamber can decrease the time required for a piston stroke using this same type of a propellant. This also allows to reduce the amount of propellant when the more rapid stroke is not required. This is because of the characteristics of the detonation waves which are responsible for the piston movement. The visualization of the detonation waves occurring due to ignition of the propellant is crucial for understanding the dependence between the construction of the actuators interior and the piston stroke time. Therefore, the approach of simulating numerically the detonation waves aroused. This simulation was conducted with aid of ANSYS Workbench 13 environment using the AUTODYN module. The numerical tests consists on modelling the actuator without changing the overall dimensions as well as the parameters of the propellant. The only elements modified were piston and the bottom of the cylinder shape.

The combustion characteristics of Ba(NO3)2/Mg with binders such as phenolic resin (PR) and nitrocellulose were studied experimentally using an IGA-140 non contact, far-infrared thermometer and transient intensity testing instrument. The results revealed that the burn temperature, luminous intensity and burn rate of the pyrotechnic mixtures with PR (1594.5 °C, 47235.6 cd, 12.5 mm/s) were all larger than the NC system (1432.6 °C, 3242.9 cd, 9.0 mm/s), which is due to differences in the decomposition progress of the two binders that led to substantial differences in the loss of reaction energy and the exothermic reaction between the phenolic resin and the oxidizer before the Mg-oxidizer reaction.

The validation of the consistency of combustion front propagation along confined, low-gas, curved, pyrotechnic paths pressed into the grooves of the disc bodies of artillery and rocket ammunition fusing systems, is of critical importance as it concerns the functional reliability and safe usage of such types of ammunition. To validate the above consistency, Real Time X-ray Radioscopy (RTR) was utilized for the recording of the combustion process of curved pyrotechnic paths comprising two delay time segments. To confirm the observations obtained by the RTR technique, visual (VIS) recording was utilized for the unconfined pyrotechnic path. Due to the RTR and VIS techniques, evolution of the combustion process was recorded as a combustion front travelling along the pyrotechnic path. The combustion front had a convex shape. Using the VIS technique, a conical, bright tail was also observed behind the combustion front. The mean velocity of the propagation of the combustion front along each delay segment of the confined pyrotechnic path was determined on the basis of the RTR recordings. Using the RTR and VIS techniques, it was possible to quasi-continuously detect and record the combustion front movement along the confined and unconfined pyrotechnic paths, respectively. The VIS observations confirmed the RTR recording of the convex shape of the combustion front. In addition, the VIS technique allowed us to record the bright, conical tail.

Opis:
Pyrotechnic delay elements owing to their simple structure and reliability are very often used as part of the design of ammunition. Their basic task consists in generating a specified delay between the respective actions of two elements/systems, required to ensure the safe and reliable work of ammunition. The paper presents laboratory methods employed for testing the performance of pyrotechnic delay elements (PDEs) used in means of combat. The introductory part describes pyrotechnical delay elements and the task fulfilled by them in ammunition. The next part discusses performance parameters of pyrotechnic delay elements, decisive for their proper operation, and factors influencing such operation. In its main part the article presents the standard defining the laboratory methods to be employed for testing pyrotechnic delay elements. According to the above-mentioned standard, the laboratory methods of testing pyrotechnic delay elements can be divided into tests in the open and closed systems. Further, the paper discusses both types of test systems. Taking account of a wide thematic scope of the discussed issue, this article focuses mainly on presenting new methods of testing pyrotechnic delay elements, which have not been mentioned in the standard. Provided examples of tests of pyrotechnic delay elements have been taken from the Polish and foreign literature. Two methods of testing pyrotechnic delay elements are worth paying special attention, one making use of a thermal imaging camera, and the other relying on Roentgen radiation.

This paper describes the thermal, kinetic and ignition behaviour of three pyrotechnic mixtures comprising Al + Ba(NO3)2, Mg + NH4ClO4, and Mg + KMnO4. Aluminium (Al) and magnesium (Mg) are metal fuels whereas barium nitrate, potassium permanganate and ammonium perchlorate are oxidants. The main objective of the paper is to assess the safety and relative reactivity of these pyrotechnic combinations. The experimental results indicate that aluminium powder reacts exothermically with the decomposition products of barium nitrate near 601 °C. A similar kind of exothermic reaction takes place between magnesium powder and ammonium perchlorate at 338 °C. Heat flow data obtained from multiple heating rate experiments were used to calculate the kinetic parameters, such as activation energy, reaction rate constant and frequency factor, using the Kissinger method. Critical ignition temperatures of all three compositions have been estimated in order to evaluate their thermal stability. The results show that all of these compositions are thermally stable and their relative reactivity decreases in the following order: Mg + NH4ClO4 > Mg + KMnO4 > Al + Ba(NO3)2.

Opis:
Organic fuel based pyrotechnic charges for gas generators (GG) of Base Bleed (BB) projectiles have shown better combustion characteristics than metallic based ones. Since organic fuel based compositions are representative of energy poor pyrotechnic mixtures, they combust at lower combustion velocities. Conventional methods for heat transfer enhancement of GG charges, based on the introduction of metallic fuel components into pyrotechnic mixtures, are very successful in raising the combustion velocity, but inevitably, they also tend to force production of solid and liquid combustion products which reduce the GG charge’s functionality. In this paper, the results obtained by inserting copper wires (copper wire heat guides (HG)) into organic-based gas generator charges will be presented. The aim of inserting copper wires was to enhance the combustion velocity by influencing on the thermal heat transfer of GG charges. The results have shown that copper wire heat guides had a positive influence on the GG charges heat transfer, resulting in a 15-20% rise in the combustion velocity, without any of the side effects observed in the case of the addition of metallic fuels to GG charges.
