Opis:
The character of the master–pupil arrangement was discussed as the elementary microstructure of the world of participants in the game whose aim is the scientific truth. A model of master and pupil's “contract” that is consistent with the essence of that game, and especially a list of rights that both sides of such a “contract” have were presented. University was pointed to as a typical institution that creates and perfects “master–pupil” arrangements. It was also pointed that such an arrangement is a little school of ethics, etiquette and epistemic, characteristic of the circles of participants in the game played for scientific truth. Threats were also discussed for the “master–pupil” arrangement that come from the “great science”, as well as from the “mass democracy”, “mass man”, “mass thinking”, “mass production” and “mass organisation” with inclinations for a “gardener's” understanding and treatment of social problems. Harmfulness of the advantage of the “superior–subordinate” arrangement over the one of “master–pupil” was mentioned as well as the threat to identity of the process of “rearing scholars” under the conditions of replacing the “master–pupil” arrangement with the one “patron–customer”. Finally, reasonableness of playing for maintaining the identity of chosen fields of the academic science was discussed, since what is called science is divided into those fields (also greatly corroded by now) and great areas of technology sensu largo. The presented considerations were linked to the question of crisis of the Western civilisation.

Opis:
The paper analyzes a document issued by the office of education - the curricular basis for general education in high schools. The theoretical ground for this analysis is Z. Kwieciński's theory of the decagon of education, the theory which is a synthetic presentation of what influences the process of human development. When we interpret the concept of education as the broadest category describing the causes and effects of the changes in students' personalities, we may accomplish harmony and integrity through an even influence within the following areas of issues (sides): globalization, etatization, nationalization, collectivization, politicization, bureaucratization, and professionalization, socialization, inculturation and personalization, formation and juridification, education and humanization, and hominization. The analysis of the curricular basis deals with each of the above sides. One has to find appropriate areas in their educational purposes, school tasks, curricula and students' achievements in particular subjects of high school. This analysis entitles us to conclude that each of the wall of the model of education is reflected in the curricular basis. It also records lack of particular issues, an important task for theoretical studies and a hint for the author of curricula and teachers.

Opis:
The paper seeks to bring home to theorists and practitioners of education one of the branches of pedagogical thought, namely existential pedagogy. The main line of thinking in pedagogy can be defined in the following way: the point is to help people to overcome their banal existence and help them to choose a way towards authentic existence. Thus formulated watchword of this trend opens a new perspective on pedagogical thinking of great importance both theoretical and practical. It is true that in the end of the 1960s the peculiar vogue for existentialism was in the wane. Nevertheless it brought about a vivid interest in philosophy, introduced a new approach in many domains of science, including pedagogy. Consequently, the reality of education and its planning could better be recognized. By opening to what is non-verifiable, existentialism made it possible to seek after the sense of existence and education (interest in the noetic dimension), and to quest after a climate in which one could adopt an attitude of openness and overcome abstract categories (V. Frankl). The very categories of existentialism are significant, starting with the category of „existence” (Lat. existere - take place, exist, appear, be outside, go towards). Owing to existentialism such categories as „freedom,” experience etc. have clearly received a dynamic dimension in pedagogy. The author points to existentialism as a branch of contemporary philosophical thought with which is connected its appearance in pedagogical thought. The author devotes much attention, within the framework of basic problems of existential pedagogy, to the tasks and objectives of education. He does this by turning our attention to the axiology of existential pedagogy, understanding of the educational relationship, the role of educator/teacher and pupil/student in the overall dynamism of the educational process. Then he goes on to outline an existential approach to the methodology of education and instruction. By showing the main aspects of the existentialist trend in pedagogical thought, the paper may become a help in understanding not only how to approach the reality of education in the future, but also how to understand many ideas that have been imported to pedagogical thought by existentialism. Undoubtedly, existentialism has contributed to the recognition of the role of human experiences and emotions in the formation of personality. This can also be seen as an important element in the formation of a society that is more capable of empathy, dialogue, reconciliation, and sensitivity. It is especially valuable of existentialism that it has directed pedagogical thinking towards planning (in relation with the be-project idea) and the carrying out of plans in the future. They call for the climate of empathy, agreement, dialogue, and collaboration with others. Existentialism has faced criticism, but has also won great popularity and recognition. At least some of these attitudes are illustrated in the paper. Generally, one can say that undoubtedly existentialism has had its role in stressing a living concrete anew in pedagogical thought. Among other things, it has contributed a lot to the issue of coming to terms between individualism and socialization, subjectivism and objectivism, solving these problems by way of compromise between the two kinds of opposition.

The paper discusses the importance of independence of thinking and acting, so in the school education as in the scientific work. In broader understanding independence means such an attitude of the intellect, emotions and will that makes one willingly undertake different tasks-problems and realize-solve them in a responsible way. Thus independence means the steady disposition to intellectual and practical activity in schools, universities and in the research work. When this activity is emotionally positive, it may create the basis for the development (in the process of school-university education) of scientific, social and moral convictions and attitudes, necessary not only for understanding the universe and for changing it, but also for the development of wisdom, which may be understood as harmony between to have and to be, among material needs and moral values.

Opis:
Pope John Paul II is definitely the greatest authority of modern times. As Pope, the head of the Catholic Church, he taught and educated the faithful. He issued a lot of magnificent Church documents: encyclicals, adhortations, apostolic letters that put the issues connected with religion in order and made one realize the need of proper opening to the world, man and God. With his personal behavior he gave a model of Christian life. The Holy Father was considered to be amaster and a „prophet” of our times. He always had the courage of unambiguously preaching Jesus Christ's message to the world. He conducted diverse and intensive apostolic activities. Analysis of John Paul II's statements and behavior shows that when carrying out the mission of evangelizing the world he had a very well thought out and consistent conception of education. Hence talking about John Paul II's own peculiar pedagogy is fully justified. The personalist-theological perspective is the basic element of this pedagogy. The chief thesis in the Pope's attitude towards education was accepting such an anthropology that considers both the positive elements of the human being (because he is a God's child), and his weaknesses, shortcomings, lack of order, which result from the original sin. In the process of education and self-education the human being is obliged by God Himself to realize in his life certain values, and especially: faith, hope and love. The basic aim of education is to develop the human being's subjectivity and to transmit the proper canon of values to him, including moral and religious values. First of all, the Pope wanted to direct man towards Christ, and to do this, besides his personal influence he used various external means, which he appreciated both in his teachings and in practice. Today it can be said that the fruit of John Paul II's pedagogical actions can be seen in many people's attitudes. The fact that many young people pronounce themselves in favor of the values accepted by John Paul II and that his attitude is meaningful is expressed in the movement defined as The John Paul II Generation.

Opis:
Pharmacological tests are widely used in evaluation of autonomic pupil denervation in Western Europe and United States. These tests allow to localize the level of lesion of pupil’s autonomic pathways. The application of such tests can reduce the number of the other necessary and expensive diagnostic tests, including imaging postudies. Such approach is of special value in diagnosing sympathetic pupil denervation, due to complexity of the sympathetic pathways. The use of pharmacological test in diagnosis of pupil denervation is limited in Poland due to unavailability of the necessary substances. The lack of availability of adequate pharmacological substances is the main factor limiting this form of diagnostics. The most useful tests used in diagnostics of sympathetic pupil denervation are the hydroxyamphetamine and cocaine tests. The application of hydroxyamphetamine enables the investigator to distinguish first or second neuron damage from the third neuron injury. However, the cocaine test allows to distinguish between the first neuron damage and the injury of the second or third sympathetic neuron innervating the pupil. Thus, only application of both tests – one after the other – allows us to precisely locate the site of damage in the sympathetic pathway. Unfortunately, the cocaine solution is not available in Europe (is used only in the USA). In case of suspected damage of parasympathetic pathway innervating the pupil, the most used is the carbachol test. Unfortunately, this substance is not perfect, because after application to the eye, the pupil with damaged second parasympathetic neuron or the pupil in a patient with Holmes-Adie syndrome act exactly the same. Thus, it is only possible to distinguish between the first parasympathetic neuron damage and second neuron damage or Holmes-Adie syndrome. The pilocarpine test enables the investigators to distinguish the pharmacological blockade of cholinergic receptors in synapse from all other possible causes of pathological pupil dilatation.

This study proposes a convenient method of evaluating mental stress. The potential of monitoring changes in pupil diameter as a measure of human reliability while operating human–machine systems was examined experimentally. An experiment was carried out to clarify the relation between changes in pupil diameter and autonomic nervous activity by measuring an electrocardiogram and pupil diameter when 10 subjects completed a time-sensitive task. The electrocardiogram was measured using a multitelemeter system and pupil diameter was measured using an eye-mark recorder. Several relationships between changes in pupil diameter and autonomic nervous activity were revealed and indicated that measurement of pupil diameter was an effective indicator of autonomic nervous activity. Therefore, it may be possible to develop a monitoring system that measures changes in pupil diameter as an indicator of the mental state of workers operating human–machine systems.

The article presents results of research the perception of Geography by pupils of lower-secondary schools. Examinations were conducted by students of geography during teaching practice at schools in major cities of the Silesian Voivodeship. In the ranking of the importance of school subjects Geography is located in the center of the list, whereas in the category of „liked” mathematical-natural subjects it is the second after Biology. In the upper forms this school subject becomes more and more „indifferent”. The most liked contents by pupils of the lower secondary schools are as follows: the own region, the regional geography of world and astronomical issues. On the other hand the most difficult plots are connected with a geological history of the Earth and socio-economic issues of world. The decided majority of pupils thinks that the geographical knowledge is useful in the life, and the signs of her usefulness is the sense of direction and the ability of map reading. In the majority of schools lessons of Geography undergo exclusively in the class room. The dream of pupils in relation to the geographical education are field exercises, more frequent watching films and using teaching games during lessons and the group work.

Salesian preventive system – distortions
Opis:
The content of this article is related to the issues concerning Salesian educational system. The author has outlined some possible distortions of Don Bosco’s Salesian preventive system to which an educator is exposed. First of all, the educational errors which appear while working with young people concern the dimension of entertainment. Secondly, the author mentioned the instrumental treatment of the pupils. Next, the article touches the problem of paternalism as an effect of over protective love. There is a quite frequent problem of putting to much emphasis on actions according to the formal and structural requirements at schools which results in sticking to regulations. The author finishes indicating the last two distortions: leading to negligence of individual’s full development and overstressing the religious dimension at the expense of pupil’s integral education.

What significance do they ascribe to the sound of the school bell? What does its sound really mean to them when it signals a beginning of another lesson and what when it starts a break? Such formulated questions specified the area of my empiric quests. These attempts of mine belong to the trend of research which on the one hand contributes to the fuller comprehension of childhood shown from the perspective of the very children, whereas on the other hand it may reveal senses and meanings which are given by children to the world that surrounds them.
