Transport is a very important part of activities in the tourism sector. In addition to the transport of tourists to and within a destination, transport itself can be a tourist attraction. The aim of this paper is to analyse selected problems of railways in Slovakia (a decrease in the importance of railways for passenger transport in Slovakia in the past 20 years, discontinued passenger transport on certain railway tracks and the modernisation of other tracks, and zero-fare public rail transport services for certain categories of passengers), and to present good examples of the use of narrow-gauge railways for the purposes of tourism (the Tatra Electric Railways and the Kysuce-Orava Forest Railway).

The main achievement of the research was to present the problems of accessing public transport in Warsaw agglomeration. The case study of Sulejówek shows that there are a lot of difficulties with the regional transport network. On the one hand there are organisation issues as inefficient or luck of support of train transport and, on the other hand, bad quality of local roads. Nevertheless, the simulation presents that it is possible to organise bus lines which allow inhabitants the access to the local train stations. The next step of the research would be creating timetables for both presented solutions in combination with train timetables and choosing the optimal option for implementation. This kind of research could be the recommendations for local authorities which are in charge of public transport issues. If both modes of transport are covered by one common ticket, the whole system would operate on effective and high level.

The construction of passenger stops of the railway transport has been proposed in order to operate the communication infrastructure of two housing complexes – the village of Mirków and the Residential Estate ‘the Four Seasons’ (Polish: ‘Cztery Pory Roku’), belonging to the agglomeration of Wroclaw. The possibility of the location of the stops within the existing infrastructure is considered. There are presented several variants of the solution to the track layout with passenger service facilities (platforms). The parameters are provided to use for the proposed railroad turnouts and the track pavement structure. In the case of the Estate ‘Four Seasons’ there are also discussed the conditions for the construction of the tram route enabling communication with the center of Wroclaw. The concept of the tram loop in terms of the location of the estate area and the geometric layout of tracks is presented as well.

This article presents results of research devoted to spatial diversification of accessibility to passenger rail transport in the Łódź province. The analysis was conducted on the basis of a full inventory of railway connections of carriers providing their services within the boundaries of the region. Calculations were made in reference to 158 train stations and train stops as well as the population of 4,965 settlement units. Two variants of reaching a train stop by passenger were distinguished: on foot and using individual car transport. Both solutions include a number of border variants in the form of maximum equidistances of access on foot and isochrones of travel by car. Research proceedings were based on two-step floating catchment area (modified for the purposes of research into effectiveness of public rail transport), which provides for train frequency and travel time to individual stops from the topological perspective.

Public transport is one of the most important elements in the development of the economy and the social space in which it is located. Therefore, it is very important for the area to properly organize and plan a smooth and fault-tolerant transport network that will facilitate transport in the area. The paper analyzes the structural - using graph theory - railway network of the Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway to assess its structure in terms of its organizational and functional application. Th is article presents the possibilities of increasing the role of railways in the public transport system of the Urban Functional Area of Olsztyn. First, the proposed extent of the rail service, the assumptions for the new transport off er and the principles for the development of the rail timetable were outlined. Taking into account the current state of the infrastructure, the feasibility of implementing the basic transport off er (10 pairs of trains per day) and its further development in the future was examined for each direction of transport, and graphical timetables were drawn up and presented, based on the assumption of cyclical departures (i.e. clock-face schedule for train departures). Part of the article is also devoted to measures in the area of bus transport in terms of organisation and infrastructure, which, if taken, would make it possible to better integrate it with the railway system. Taking into account the observations and conclusions in the previous chapters, the proposed investment activities involving the railway infrastructure necessary to implement and improve regional rail services, as well as a broader perspective on further investments enabling the development of the transport off er and increasing rail accessibility in the Urban Functional Area of Olsztyn, are presented. Th e main conclusion of the analyses carried out is the confi rmation of the feasibility of implementing a cyclical timetable in the area under study for the assumed base number of connections.

W tabelach przedstawiono podział rynku. W tym samym okresie zamówionych zostało 101 kolejek miejskich niskopodlogowych i sredniej wysokości podłogi oraz 215 kolejek miejskich wysokopodłogowych. Łącznie 615 pojazdów.

In January 2020 the European Parliament approved a resolution on the Green Deal, which aims to ensure that the EU achieves climate neutrality by 2050. Crucial to achieving the strategy’s goals is sustainable and green mobility. Rail transport as the most sustainable mode of transport is an important factor in achieving these changes. This article presents a synthetic diagnosis of the position of railways on the passenger transport market in Poland, in the context of the Green Deal assumptions. The essential analysis was preceded by a discussion of the structure of external transport costs, which is one of the determinants of the Green Deal. Trends in passenger transport were then identified and attention was paid to the shift of inter-industry relations in favour of rail transport. An analysis of the structure of regional and agglomeration rail transport was also carried out. Developments in this market area show a revitalisation of agglomeration rail links, which fits in with the sustainable mobility strategy.

Pierwsze plany budowy metra w Warszawie powstały w połowie lat 20. XX w., gdy liczba mieszkańców miasta (zamieszkałych na 120 km2) przekroczyła 1 min osób. W1927 r. powstał pierwszy projekt przewidujący budowę dwóch linii: pl. Unii Lubelskiej - Muranów (linia A) i Wola - Praga (przez most na Wiśle - linia B). Na wybranych kierunkach wykonano wstępne wiercenia, zaś przy Dyrekcji Tramwajów powstało biuro, zajmujące się budową kolei podziemnej. W omawianym okresie znaczenie podstawowe dla systemu komunikacji miejskiej w Warszawie miały tramwaje i częściowo dorożki oraz - pojawiające się coraz liczniej - taksówki. Jednak możliwości komunikacji tramwajowej, mimo dużej częstotliwości kursowania tramwajów (ok. 2 min), powoli się wyczerpywały.

W artykule zaprezentowane są etapy zmian w organizacji zarządzania publicznym transportem kolejowym w Polsce w latach 1990–2018. Pierwszy etap obejmuje okres lat 1990–2000, który charakteryzował się pełnym zmonopolizowaniem kolejowych przewozów pasażerskich w przedsiębiorstwie państwowym PKP. Kolejny etap to lata 2001–2008, kiedy to ustanowiono nowe zasady organizowania i finansowania kolejowych przewozów pasażerskich oraz z PKP wyodrębniono kolejowe spółki pasażerskie, takie jak PKP Intercity, PKP Przewozy Regionalne, PKP WKD i PKP SKM w Trójmieście. Ponadto na tym etapie pojawiły się pierwsze w Polsce koleje samorządowe i prywatny przewoźnik kolejowy. Trzeci etap zmian organizacji zarządzania publicznym transportem kolejowym obejmuje lata 2009–2018. Jest to etap ukształtowania się obowiązującego obecnie modelu zarządzania tym segmentem przewozów pasażerskich, powstały w wyniku wdrożenia przepisów ustawy o publicznym transporcie zbiorowym z grudnia 2010 roku. Na tym etapie ewolucji powstały ponadto kolejne kolejowe spółki samorządowe. Rynek kolejowych przewozów pasażerskich w Polsce obecnie obsługuje 12 przewoźników.
The article presents phases of transformation in the public rail transport management‘s organization in Poland in the years 1990–2018. The first phase covers the years 1990–2000 and was characterized by full monopolization of passenger rail transport by the PKP – state-owned company. The next stage covers the years between 2001–2008, when the new rules of organization and financing of rail passenger conveyances has been settled and new companies like the PKP Intercity, the PKP Przewozy Regionalne, the PKP WKD, the PKP SKM in the Tricity, have been separated from the PKP. Moreover at this stage the first local selfgovernment railways and a private railway carrier appeared in Poland. The third phase of transformation of public rail transport management covers the years 2009–2018. It is the stage of formation of current model of this particular segment of passenger transport management, which was created as a result of application of legislation on public transport in December 2010. Furthermore, the next self-government rail companies emerged during this stage. Nowadays, the market of passenger railway transport in Poland is operated by 12 carriers.
