Opis:
The HBT radii extracted in pp and pp collisions at SPS and Tevatron show a clear correlation with the charged particle rapidity density. We propose to explain the correlation using a simple model where the distance from the initial hard parton-parton scattering to the hadronization point depends on the energy of the partons emitted. Since the particle multiplicity is correlated with the mean energy of the partons produced we can explain the experimental observations without invoking scenarios that assume a thermal fireball. The model has been applied with success to the existing experimental data both in the magnitude and the intensity of the correlation. The model has also been extended to pp collisions at the LHC energy of 14 TeV. The possibilities of a better insight into the string spatial development using 3D HBT analysis are discussed.

Quality Assurance (QA)
Opis:
Basing on alanine solid state/electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) dosimetry, a supplementary method of cumulatively recording the therapeutic dose received by ocular cancer patients undergoing fractionated proton radiotherapy is proposed. By applying alanine dosimetry during the delivery of consecutive fractions, the dose received within each fraction can be read out by EPR spectrometry and a fi nal permanent cumulative record of the total dose delivered obtained. The dose response of the alanine detector was found to be practically independent on its position within the extended proton Bragg peak region. Dose measurements based on entrance dose recorded in proton beams individually formed for each patient are presented. The described method will be applied as a complementary Quality Assurance procedure for patients undergoing proton radiotherapy at the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Krakow, Poland (IFJ PAN).

Opis:
Proton acceleration from laser-generated plasma is carried out at intensities ranging between 1010 and 1019 W/cm2, by using ns, ps and fs laser systems. The high energy density transferred from the pulsed laser beam into the solid target generates ionized species released in vacuum from the solid surface. Fast electrons followed by slower ions build up a double-layer and a consequent electric field, which is responsible for the ion acceleration mainly along the target-normal. Polymeric targets containing nanostructures (or metallic species) with high laser absorbing capacity, and metallic hydrates (or H-enriched metals), permit to increase the plasma temperature and density, thus to improve the proton beam energy and current. Thick targets and low laser intensities, operating in repetitive pulse, allows to generate high currents of low energy protons. On the other hand, through the use of thin targets and high laser intensities enabled the generation of high proton energies, above 1 MeV.

Many studies have suggested a link between long-term PPI treatment and hypomagnesaemia, though none of them investigated the short-term exposure in high-risk patients. We sought to investigate this issue in 90 critically ill patients. We assessed serum Mg concentrations, necessity of Mg supplementation, PPI dose, duration of PPI therapy and route of administration. In multiple analysis we found that Mg supplementation (positive effect/p=0.03) and enteral route of PPI administration (negative effect/p=0.02) had significant impact on Mg concentration. Although the deleterious relationship between short-term PPI treatment and Mg concentration was found, further studies should be provided to confirm this interesting effect.

Opis:
In this paper we address the question how the presence of an aromatic moiety affects the proton affinity of crown ethers. In order to compare the proton affinities of crown ethers studied (M), we compared the abundances of protonated crown ethers ([M + H]+ ions) with the abundance of the ion [NH2-B15C5 + H]+ (formally also protonated crown ether). Both [M + H]+ and [NH2-B15C5 + H]+ were formed as a result of decomposition of [NH2-B15C5 + H + M]+. The presence of a benzene moiety fused with a macrocyclic ring strongly decreases the ratio [M + H]+/[NH2-B15C5 + H]+. Thus, the higher ring strain caused by the benzene moiety leads to a substantial lowering of the proton affinity of crown ethers. It is also suggested that for protonated benzocrown ethers the ring strain is partly compensated by the proton-đ interaction. The presence of an NO2 group decreases the electron density on the aromatic ring and, consequently, the proton-đ interaction is suppressed. As expected, the proton affinity of benzo-crown ethers increases with increasing size of their cavity since the ring strain is lower for larger molecules. An unexpectedly high proton affinity of dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 (DC18C6) has been observed.

The LNS Superconducting Cyclotron has been working in stand alone mode since the beginning of 2000, after 5 years of operation as a booster of the 15 MV Tandem. The new mode has proven to be by far more advantageous than the previous one from the point of view of operation. Working with axial injection, a quite high number of new beam types has been developed. The new mode allows for acceleration of H2 + molecules, which break into two protons when crossing a stripper in the beam line out of the cyclotron. 62 MeV protons have been used for radiotherapy since February 2002. The new mode allows to inject a more intense beam as compared to the previous mode. Therefore, an upgrading program of the cyclotron has started, aiming at having an intense extracted beam to be used as a primary beam in a facility for production of radioactive beams. Beam tests have been accomplished to evaluate transmission figures, while the upgrading of the present electrostatic deflectors has started: new deflector systems, able to dissipate high beam power and allowing for easier maintenance, have been designed and will soon be tested in the machine.

Opis:
Several solid state detectors, such as dosimetric diodes, MOSFET detectors or diamond detectors are used for quality control of radiotherapy beams. The goal of this work was to determine dosimetric properties of the PTW diamond detector (DD) and the PTW silicon diode in the 60 MeV therapeutic beam (practical range in water Rp = 29.17 mm) located at the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN, Kraków). A PTW Markus ionization chamber was used as a reference device. The empirical correction factor for diamond detector, kDD(Rresidual), introduced in the Technical Report Series of IAEA, TRS-398 [9] as a function of beam quality, Rresidual, was found to decrease from 1.12 for Rresidual = 1.5 mm to 1.04 for Rresidual = 26 mm. The reproducibility of response of DD and PTW diodes in the proton filed did not exceed 0.11%. Our results show that diamond detectors and dosimetric diodes are useful tools for quality assurance (QA) of therapeutic proton beam, but each type of detectors has specific properties which should be taken into account when choosing particular application.

Opis:
The influence of the energy spectrum and the spatial spread of a therapeutic proton beam impinging on an irradiated medium (called the entrance beam) on the depth-dose characteristics in water, in the proton energy range of 50 division sign 70 MeV was studied. It turns out that full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the Bragg peak increases almost linearly with increasing proton energy. It ranges from 1.53 mm for 50 MeV to 2.59 mm for 70 MeV, for monoenergetic protons. Moreover, the significant influence of the energy spread of the entrance proton beam on the intensity and FWHM of the Bragg peak is visible. FWHM of the Bragg peak of 60 MeV protons is equal to 2.03, 3.37 and 5.86 mm for a monoenergetic beam and beams with an energy spread of 0.5 and 1 MeV SD (standard deviation), respectively. The intensity of the Bragg peak of a 60 MeV proton beam with an energy spread of 1 MeV SD is approximately 25% less than that for a monoenergetic beam. Moreover, the Bragg peak shifts to smaller depths as the energy spread of the entrance beam increases. The shift of the peak is about 0.2÷0.3 mm for a beam with an energy spread of 0.5 MeV SD and between 0.4 division sign 0.5 mm for an energy spread of 1 MeV SD, compared with a monoenergetic beam in the energy range from 50 to 60 MeV. However, the spatial spread of the entrance proton beam does not affect significantly the depth-dose characteristic.

At the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN, Kraków, Poland) the proton eye radiotherapy facility has recently been developed and is now fully operational. A set of two X-ay RAD-14 Varian medical systems tubes are used to obtain orthogonal images of the patient’s eyeball undergoing radiotherapy with tantalum clips already attached to its surface to delineate the tumour volume. We assessed the dose received by the patient from multiple X-ray exposures during the patient positioning procedure. Measurements of Kair were performed using various types of ionization chambers and MCP-N thermoluminescent (TL) detectors and calculated using the PCXMC code. Good agreement between measurements and calculations was found. The mean absorbed dose to the brain was measured using TL detectors placed inside the head of a Rando anthropomorphic phantom used in simulation of the patient positioning procedure. The measured maximum incident air kerma absorbed during the entire procedure of patient positioning was found not to exceed 7 mGy, while the mean absorbed dose to the brain did not exceed 2 mSv.

These methods allowed us to analyse the behaviour of bound water in the bean cotyledon molecular structure, and to observe free volume regions formed there. They also made it possible to describe their dimensions and concentration quantitatively. Good correlation was found between the increase of the free volume radius and the amount of water bound to the bean cotyledon solid matrix.

Opis:
Introduction: Proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a class of drugs which decrease gastric acid production, their overuse is becoming increasingly common. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate medical indications for PPIs in a cohort of prevalent hemodialysis (HD) patients and their awareness about the medical effects of these drugs. Materials and methods: The study was performed in 78 HD patients enrolled in a chronic dialysis program in a single academic dialysis unit. The study was based on medical history obtained from the patients (survey about drugs they take with intention of revealing PPIs, indications for the treatment, their awareness of the mechanism of action of these drugs). Results: 46 patients (59%) took or have been taking PPIs. Almost half (49%; n=22) had no clear medical indications for the drugs. Prescription of PPIs without medical indications was more common among nephrologists (27%), when compared with gastroenterologists (5%; p<0.05). Only 29% (n=13) of patients taking PPIs were aware of the mechanism of action of the drugs. Conclusions: Results of this study reveal the problem of PPI overuse among HD patients. Gastroenterologists usually prescribed PPIs according to medical indications. Lack of patients’ knowledge about the indications for PPI therapy is overwhelming.
