W artykule wskazano, że napędy hybrydowe i elektryczne, oprócz znanych walorów ekologicznych, są szczególnie korzystne do budowania zaawansowanych systemów sterowania napędem kół, które wpływają na kierunek ruchu pojazdu (Torque Vectoring). Wychodząc od opisu złożonej budowy takich systemów w pojazdach napędzanych silnikiem spalinowym stwierdzono, że w przypadku napędzania kół silnikami elektrycznymi, realizacja funkcji takiego systemu jest prostsza. Omówiono zasadnicze rodzaje i przykłady takich konstrukcji, uwypuklając różnice w ich strukturze oraz występujące problemy i ograniczenia. W podsumowaniu podkreślono ważność tego aspektu napędzania kół silnikami elektrycznymi, co przekłada się poprawę bezpieczeństwo czynnego pojazdów.
The paper indicated that hybrid and electric drivetrains, besides its well known ecological values, are particularly advantageous for designing advanced systems of wheel control, which influence the direction of vehicle’s motion (Torque Vectoring). Starting from the description of complex systems meant for combustion engine powered vehicles, it was stated that when wheels are propelled by electric motors, realization of such system is simpler. The basic types and examples of such designs were reviewed; and their structure, associated issues and limitations were emphasized. The summary underlined the importance of this aspect of electric motor propulsion, which translates into improved active safety of vehicles.

This paper deals with a comparative study using numerical simulations between the failures effect caused by the speed sensor faults for a propulsion control system (PCS) of an electrical vehicle (EV) using dualinduction motors structure. The PCS strategies are achieved on two types of controls where the first one is done from a flux-oriented control (FOC) and the second one is conducted from a direct torque control (DTC). For an electric vehicle, we will often guarantee service continuity, in spite of the occurred faults such as an offset fault in speed sensor and a zero-feedback sensor speed fault which both are essentially needed in the structure of the PCS-EV. The occurred fault cited above might influence one of the dual induction motors which could be conducted an unbalance in the dual used motors and from which the control of the vehicle might be also lost. The results of the realized numerical simulations on the EV conducted by the PCS demonstrate clearly the impact of the so-called-fault. Thereafter, we can also appreciate the robustness using each used control propulsion system in despite of the occurred speed sensor fault.

The paper shows purposefulness and possiblity of automation of ship propulsion systems, especially those of POD type, intended to be used on four Baltic navigation ships: a containership, ro-ro ship, product tanker, as well as river-sea-going ship, designed within the frame of the Eureka "Baltecologicalship" project. Requirements of ship classification societies, and general ones for modern ship control systems were presented, as well as a review and analysis of currently applied power plant automation systems for diesel- electric ships fitted with podded propulsion drive (POD), were performed. Moreover real ways and possibilities of controlling ship s course and speed were indicated. Information contained in this paper may facilitate selecting appropriate design assumptions for a propulsion control system to be applied on the above mantioned ships.

This paper presents an analysis of environmental and technical conditions necessary for working out a possibly most favourable propulsion system for a two – segment passenger ship intended for navigation between Berlin and Kaliningrad. There are presented various types of propulsion systems for small ships as well as analyzed their possible applications and consequences. In this work there were taken into account system’s reliability, efficiency, dimensions, mass and costs of manufacturing, assembling and possible replacing the system components as well as an impact on maneuverability and natural environment. With taking into account the above mentioned criteria it was finally found that the diesel-hydraulic system fitted with two azimuthal ducted solid propellers is the most favourable. There are also presented a schematic propulsion and control diagram, three-dimensional arrangement drawing of system components as well as assembly drawing of the designed azimuthal propulsion system.

The paper deals with synthesis of automatic control system for an unmanned underwater robotic vehicle. The problem of determining permissible propulsive forces and moments necessary for optimum power distribution within a propulsion system composed of azimuth propellers (rotative ones). To allocate thrusts the unconstrained optimization method making it possible to obtain a minimum-norm solution, was applied. A method was presented for assessing propulsion system capability to generate propulsive forces (set control inputs). For the case of lack of such capability an algorithm was proposed making modification of their values and determination of feasible propulsive forces (i.e. permissible control inputs), possible. A numerical example which confirmed correctness and effectiveness of the proposed approach, was also attached.

Self-propelled wheelchairs favour the rehabilitation process, forcing the user to be physically active. Unfortunately, in most cases, the manual propulsion is not adapted to the individual needs and physical capabilities of the user. This paper presents the results of operational tests of a wheelchair equipped with a hybrid propulsion system in which the muscle strength generated by the user is assisted by two independent electric motors. The research aimed to investigate the influence of the applied control algorithm and the assistance factor (W) on the value of the muscular effort (MA) while propelling the wheelchair with the use of push rims. A modified ARmedical AR-405 wheelchair equipped with two MagicPie 5 electric motors built into the wheelchair’s hubs with a power of 500 W was used in this research. The tests were carried out on a wheelchair test bench simulating the moment of resistance within the range of 8–11 Nm. Surface electromyography was employed for the measurement of MA, specifically, a four-channel Noraxon Mini DTS apparatus. The research was carried out on five patients from the group of C50 anthropometric dimensions. The effort was measured for four muscles: deltoid–anterior part, deltoid–posteriori part, and triceps brachii and extensor carpi radialis longus. The effectiveness of the hybrid propulsion system was observed based on the extensor carpi radialis longus muscle. In this case, for the standard wheelchair, the MA ranged from 93% to 123%. In contrast, for a wheelchair equipped with the hybrid propulsion system, at W = 70%, the MA was within the range of 43%–75%.

In order to meet the operation requirements of the beam supply with multi-working conditions, multi-modes and high efficiency, a dual-mode hybrid output control method combining phase-shifting and pulse-width dual-mode modulation technology with secondary side series-parallel operation is proposed. In this paper, the structure and working mode of the new dual full-bridge topology are firstly analyzed. Secondly, the main circuit parameters are designed according to the power performance indicators, and the losses under two control modes of phase shift and pulse width are calculated. Finally, comparing the losses of these two control methods, and combining the series-parallel operation mode of the secondary side of the transformer, a dual-mode switching control method of the beam supply is designed. In order to verify the rationality of the dual-mode mixed output control method, a principle prototype with a rated capacity of 2 kW, a rated voltage of 1 800 V and a switching frequency of 50 kHz was used for verification. Experiments show the effectiveness and superiority of the dual-mode hybrid output control method.

The following paper presents load analysis of propulsion engine during ship's speed acceleration. This process is carried out after manoeuvring in order to receive, as fast as possible, exploitation speeds of the ship, achieved during the voyage. The analysis concerns direct propulsion power system of low-speed engine of constant pitch propeller. Wrong steering process of engine load changes in temporary states, can cause engine overloading, as the result of its operation on the external limiting characteristic and can end up in engine seizure. Control of engine operation is carried on through selecting of adequate setting of rotational speed governor, which for specified external conditions can result in adequate position of fuel link and the choice of adequate fuel index arm dose. Equalization of the power delivered by the engine in given conditions of work with power required by the ship’s propeller cooperating with the hull, will establish adequate rotational speed of the engine and finally the speed of the vessel. In order to speed up the sip's motion, there must occur an overflow of propeller thrust over the required thrust (resistance) and this, in turn, is connected with the necessity to ensure the engine power surplus over the power required for a given range of operation or in other words sailing speed. This article presents the working model of ship propelling system during speed acceleration and concerns mainly nonoverload running of the engine. The model described above has been verified during tests in real conditions at sea.

Brushless DC motors are often used as the power sources for modern ship electric propulsion systems. Due to the electromagnetic torque ripple of the motor, the traditional control method reduces the drive performance of the motor under load changes. Aiming at the problem of the torque ripple of the DC brushless motor during a noncommutation period, this paper analysis the reasons for the torque ripple caused by pulsewidth modulation (PWM), and proposes a PWM_ON_PWM method to suppress the torque ripple of the DC brushless motor. Based on the mathematical model of a DC brushless motor, this method adopts a double closed-loop control method based on fuzzy control to suppress the torque ripple of the DC brushless motor. The fuzzy control technology is integrated into the parameter tuning process of the proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller to effectively improve the stability of the motor control system. Under the Matlab/Simulink platform, the response performance of different PID control methods and the torque characteristics of different PWM modulation methods are simulated and compared. The results show that the fuzzy adaptive PID control method has good dynamic response performance. It is verified that the PWM_ON_PWM modulation method can effectively suppress the torque ripple of the motor during non-commutation period, improve the stability of the double closed-loop control system and meet the driving performance of the motor under different load conditions.

The paper addresses methods of thrust distribution in a propulsion system for an unmanned underwater vehicle. It concentrates on finding an optimal thrust allocation for desired values of forces and moments acting on the vehicle. Special attention is paid to the unconstrained thrust allocation. The proposed methods are developed using a configuration matrix describing the layout of thrusters in the propulsion system. The paper includes algorithms of thrust distribution for both faultless work of the propulsion system and a failure of one of the thrusters. Illustrative examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed methods.

In the recent years, a dynamical development of an underwater robotics has been noticed. The robotics is developed in several different directions by many foreign and a few national R&D centers. The development is focused on both an improvement of construction and features of the underwater vehicles (a hardware development) and an increase of underwater vehicle autonomy providing to a swarm control (a software development). In the paper, new research area focused on biomimetic underwater robots undertaken at the Institute of Electrical Engineering and Automatics in the recent years is presented. The area concern both hardware and software development of the underwater vehicles. In the paper, the research on biomimetic underwater vehicles developed within national and international projects is described. At the end of the paper, a summary containing foreseen research is included.
W ostatnich latach obserwuje się dynamiczny rozwój robotyki podwodnej. Rozwija się ona w kilku kierunkach w ramach badań prowadzonych przez wiele zagranicznych i krajowych ośrodków naukowo-badawczych. Rozwój robotyki podwodnej skupia się zarówno na udoskonalaniu konstrukcji i właściwości pojazdów podwodnych (rozwój sprzętowy), jak się na zwiększaniu autonomii pojazdów podwodnych w kierunku sterowania ławicą (rozwój programowy). W artykule zaprezentowano nowe badania nad biomimetycznymi pojazdami podwodnymi realizowane w Instytucie Elektrotechniki i Automatyki Okrętowej w ciągu ostatnich kilku lat. Badania te skupiają się zarówno na sprzętowym, jak i programowym rozwoju robotyki podwodnej. Opisano badania prowadzone w zakresie biomimetycznych pojazdów podwodnych zrealizowane w ramach projektów krajowego i międzynarodowego. W zakończeniu artykułu zawarto podsumowanie zawierające prognozowane badania.

The problem of reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in shipping is currently addressed by many research works and related industries. There are many existing and visionary technologies and ideas, which are conceptually defined or practically realised. This goal can be achieved in different ways, and reducing fuel consumption is one of the major methods. In these circumstances, the aim of this study is to analyse the possibility of fuel consumption reduction by using an alternative control strategy for low-speed marine diesel engines which would take into account the interactions between hull, propeller and main engine. For this purpose, a mathematical model including ship hull and propulsion system is developed. A case study is conducted for a ship for which the results of both the ship hull and screw propeller model tests are available. A low-speed two-stroke diesel engine is then selected for the considered ship. Two different governors are included in the model and their parameters are changed to investigate the dynamic behaviour of the system when simulating the forward acceleration mode in calm sea conditions. The research is mainly focused on variations of fuel consumption by the ship passing a certain distance to reach the nominal constant speed. It is concluded that, for a given travel distance, it is possible to save considerable amount of fuel at the expense of slight increase of journey time.

Control of propulsion systems of modern cars is a rapidly growing field of engineering. New policies in the terms of ecology, economy and safety of persons forced to search for new solutions, both technological and automation of processes. Both car companies and research centers around the world deal with the designing of appropriate models that can be used to simulate the behavior of vehicles. This paper presents a dynamic model of the propulsion system of a car with an internal combustion engine with spark ignition. It was built for a speed control system based on nonlinear predictive control. The controller is applied to the model of Golf III. The paper is divided into 5 sections. Section 1 contains a short introduction to the issues of this paper. The structure and synthesis of the dynamical nonlinear model of the propulsion system of a Golf III car are dealt with in Section 2. A nonlinear model predictive controller is derived in Section 3. Simulation tests and discussion of the results are presented in Section 4. Section 5 concludes the paper.
