Opis:

In this paper, we study the export performance determinants of firms in selected MENA countries, both jointly and separately, as well as compare them with the performance of firms from countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The analysis is based on information about individual firms found in the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and World Bank Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey (BEEPS) V database, covering the period 2011-2014. We estimate the probability of exports, while controlling for country- and sector-specific effects, using the probit model. We find that, in both groups of countries, similar variables affect firm export performance. Our empirical results obtained for Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and CEE countries indicate that the probability of exporting is positively related to the level of productivity, firm size, spending on research and development (R&D), the share of university graduates in productive employment and the internationalization of firms. State ownership and the perception of corruption by firms are mostly not statistically significant. The results obtained for the two groups of countries are statistically not very different, but enough to have some policy implications, while results for particular countries and subgroups of countries reveal a large degree of heterogeneity.

The sensitivity of explosives to various initiating events, in probability of initiation-level of stimulus space, has a shape of sigmoidal curve. In standard sensitivity tests only one point on this curve is sought, most often the 50% initiation probability level. The usual (and most often used) method for its determination is the up-and-down method. The whole sensitivity curve can be obtained by conducting large number of trials at all levels or more effectively by probit analysis. The usage of probit analysis, improvement of the precision of the results and comparison with the results precision of the up-and-down method is demonstrated by the example of determination of sensitivity to friction.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to identify the motives behind the investment decisions of manufacturing enterprises in Poland in 1996-2003. The analysis was conducted with the use of probit models and an extensive body of panel data applying to individual enterprises to determine the probability of an investment decision. The author discovered that three key factors encouraged investment by manufacturing enterprises in all the surveyed groups (exporters, publicly traded companies, private domestic and foreign enterprises and companies with foreign capital). The first factor is the expected demand for an enterprise’s products, reflecting prospective sales possibilities. Another important factor is the use of production capacity, reflecting the company’s possibilities for expanding its volume of production on the basis of existing resources and assets. Both these factors are complementary with regard to the description of the investment process. Enterprises wanting to expand their sales tend to make investment decisions when their existing fixed assets are insufficient to increase the supply of products. The third key factor that determines investment decisions is prior involvement in a long-term investment process and the continuation of work in progress. In light of the research, the cost of raising funds and the restrictiveness of monetary policy are only loosely related to the course of investment processes in Poland.

This paper examined the determinants of household food insufficiency coping strategies based on secondary data collected from 12,480 randomly selected households in Malawi. In response to food insufficiency, households employed the following coping strategies: relying on less preferred food options, reducing the proportion of meals, reducing the number of meals per day, restricting adult consumption for small children to eat, and borrowing food from family or friends. To assess the determinants of food insufficiency coping strategies, a multivariate probit model was employed. Education level, household size, livestock ownership and place of residence were some of the important factors that affected the choice of the coping strategies. The paper recommends policies that aim at strengthening the education system of the rural communities to equip them with skills they can use diversify their livelihood sources.

Opis:
African indigenous chickens (IC) though commonly kept by households in rural areas for consumption and sale, their contribution to rural livelihoods is generally overlooked. Literature suggests that IC production plays a vital role in rural communities of South Africa as an important source of animal protein and income. Despite these claimed benefits, production of indigenous chickens in Alice and other parts of South Africa’s rural areas is very low. This study used a cross-sectional survey of 120 households who keep IC in Alice communal area. The multivariate probit model was employed to investigate the factors that determine the choice of indigenous chicken owned by rural households. Results reveal that, gender, age, household size, association membership, access to formal markets, access to veterinary services, access to informal credit, access to formal credit and diversity score drive ownership of different indigenous chickens at household level. Thus far, the paper argues that, promotion of ownership of indigenous chicken at household level calls for strategic institutional alignment and a clear understanding of social demographic characteristics of the targeted community, which should be supported by several awareness campaigns and client based selection of indigenous chicken breeds of socio-economic importance to the household.

Research background: Prediction of bankruptcy is an issue of interest of various researchers and practitioners since the first study dedicated to this topic was published in 1932. Finding the suitable bankruptcy prediction model is the task for economists and analysts from all over the world. forecasting model using. Despite a large number of various models, which have been created by using different methods with the aim to achieve the best results, it is still challenging to predict bankruptcy risk, as corporations have become more global and more complex. Purpose of the article: The aim of the presented study is to construct, via an empirical study of relevant literature and application of suitable chosen mathematical statistical methods, models for bankruptcy prediction of Slovak companies and provide the comparison of overall prediction ability of the two developed models. Methods: The research was conducted on the data set of Slovak corporations covering the period of the year 2015, and two mathematical statistical methods were applied. The methods are logit and probit, which are both symmetric binary choice models, also known as conditional probability models. On the other hand, these methods show some significant differences in process of model formation, as well as in achieved results. Findings & Value added: Given the fact that mostly discriminant analysis and logistic regression are used for the construction of bankruptcy prediction models, we have focused our attention on the development bankruptcy prediction model in the Slovak Republic via logistic regression and probit. The results of the study suggest that the model based on a logit functions slightly outperforms the classification accuracy of probit model. Differences were obtained also in the detection of the most significant predictors of bankruptcy prediction in these types of models constructed in Slovak companies.

In the paper, on the selected distributions o f probability there were given models allowing for estimation of structural parameters by the generalized least squares method, by applying various types of function of the independent variable in models. It allowed a uniform perspective of the method of estimation of structural parameters and forecasting the value of parameter p, presented in the final part of the article.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – External aid allocation by the donors in recent years has been fraught with instability and volatility. This has a negative consequence on the recipient economies particularly those that are highly aid-dependent. A good solution to the problem requires much understanding of factors influencing the behavior of external aid in the respective recipient economy. In this study, the focus was on analyzing two economic factors uncommonly discussed in the empirical literature – the influence of the degree of economic freedom and external debt burden on aid allocation, with emphasis on African economy. Design/methodology/approach – The study constructs a probit model for the analysis using a panel dataset consisting of 48 African countries from 2010 to 2019. Findings – The key findings of the study include a significant positive effect of economic freedom on aid and it implies that the probability of an additional external aid allocation to African countries increases with an increase in the degree of economic freedom. However, external debt burden, albeit positive, is not statistically significant to motivate more external aid allocations to Africa over the sample period. Research implications/limitations – Hence, the pattern of external aid inflows in Africa is a reflection of a change in the degree of economic freedom in the region. Originality/value/contribution – In contribution to filling the gap in the literature on external aid inflow in the recipient economies, the study traced external aid fluctuations in Africa to external debt burden and the extent of restriction imposed on economic freedom in African countries

Research background: The evaluation of the predictive strength of MIP indicators in relation to crises is extremely important for the process of coordinating the economic policies of the EU countries. MIP is one of the pillars of the economic crisis prevention procedure. Predictive power of individual indicators has not been tested before their introduction. Purpose of the article: Evaluation of the predictive strength of fourteen MIP indicators in relation to multidimensional crises in the EU countries. Methods: We used ordered probit model to test the ability of MIP indicators to correctly predict episodes of ?multidimensional crises? (as defined by the authors) in the period between 2008 and 2017 in all EU Member States. Findings & Value added: We defined ?multidimensional crises?, combining several negative phenomena into one limited dependent variable. This work is also novel in its application of probit regression to test the predictive strength of MIP indicators with an ordered probit model. We identified five MIP variables which were statistically significant in predicting ?multidimensional crises? for all EU countries: net international investment position, nominal unit labour cost index, house price index, private sector credit flow and general government gross debt. Other variables turned out to be less important or not effective in crises prediction.

Opis:
The paper sets out to identify the key factors behind changes in the number of farms in Poland during the country’s transition to a market economy. More than 1.2 million farms abandoned agricultural production at the time, according to Fałkowski. Despite this, an excessive fragmentation and overpopulation of farms are still believed to be the key barriers to the development of Polish agriculture, the author says. The paper uses data collected during censuses in rural areas in 1996 and 2002. The research is based on two methods, descriptive analysis and econometric analysis based on what are called probit models and the Heckman procedure. The results obtained by the author show that farms in areas with a less favorable agrarian structure and a positive balance of migration displayed a greater tendency to abandon agricultural production. Access to nonagricultural sources of incomes, in turn, slowed down the outflow of farmers to other sectors of the economy, Fałkowski says. This process is important for agricultural policy makers because it contradicts the popular belief that programs for the diversification of agricultural incomes have a positive influence on the rate of structural changes, Fałkowski concludes.

Successful crop production depends initially on the availability of high-quality seed. Seed viability and vigour of four kenaf varieties during storage were investigated. Seeds of each variety were packed inside thick polythene bags and kept in Seed Stores under ambient conditions in two storage locations (Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) (29.8°C, 59.10 RH%) and Institute of Agricultural Research and Train- ing, Ibadan (27.5°C, 64.68 RH%) for 240 days (8 months).  Seeds were sampled during storage at 0, 60, 120, 180 and 240 days and tested for seed viability and seedling vigour index. Data collected on seed viability and seedling vigour were analyzed using ANOVA, mean separation using Duncan Multiple Range Test at 5% probability level and PROBIT analysis. The results showed differential responses in the two quality traits due to differences in storage location and varieties. Ibadan storage location provided more favourable conditions for higher seed quality compared to Abeokuta location while Ifeken 400 and Tianung had the best storage potential. The study showed that under ambient humid tropical conditions, storage period should not exceed 180 days (6 months) in order to maintain higher physiological quality with little or no cost. The PROBIT result revealed that the highest seed shelf life (longevity) of kenaf seeds of 8 to 9 months was derived for seeds of Ifeken 400 and Tianung stored in Ibadan and Abeokuta. The shortest shelf life of 6 months was esti- mated for Ifeken 100 stored in both locations.

This article analyses the phenomenon of using the Open Source software. The aim is to investigate and verify the existence of a positive direct network effect that characterizes usage of the Open Source software. The multivariate probit model is applied to extract factors motivating end users to the usage of the Open Source software. Special attention is paid to the demographic characteristics of the end users, as well as to the impact of the end users’ peers, such as family, work and school, on using the Open Source software. The results confirm the research assumptions. It is found that the actual choice of various Open Source software groups is correlated and thus cannot be analyzed separately. This supports the hypothesis about the existence of the network effect derived from the complementary services and dependencies among applications. The obtained results are representative for the Polish population aged 13-54.
