    The study presents the results of the analysis of verbal politeness in private letters. The persuasive aspect was taken into account. The paper concentrates on unpublished letters and greeting cards written by inhabitants of Teschen Silesia from the 1894–1952 period. The study shows a local model of politeness. Complying with the rules, the sender of private letters can affect the recipient more efficiently.

    The aim of the article is to study the range of influence of indigenous vocabulary on sixteenth-century Spanish language which had been spoken by Spanish settlers in the New World and transmitted by them to friends and relatives left in homeland. Private letters of immigrants to Spanish Indies serve as a representative source which reflect their linguistic habits. The vast collection of more than 650 letters of immigrants was edited first in 1989 by Enrique Otte, and later in 2009 by Marta Fernández Alcaide in a much more reliable transcription. This second edition is the base of the research presented in the article.

    Artykuł zawiera szczegółową analizę leksyki i środków stylistycznych, użytych przez Sienkiewicza w opisach realiów związanych z podróżą i podróżowaniem. Ekscerpcją objęto zbiór wszystkich zachowanych 1401 listów prywatnych Sienkiewicza, który zajmuje blisko 3 tysiące stron druku w wydaniu zbiorowym korespondencji Sienkiewicza pod redakcją Marii Bokszczanin. Zebrany materiał liczy łącznie ponad 300 wyrazów oraz połączeń wyrazowych o różnym charakterze, użytych ponad tysiąc razy. Przeprowadzone badania pokazały, że relacje z Sienkiewiczowskich peregrynacji najczęściej mają charakter obiektywny i rzeczowy. Pisarz wykorzystywał tu zwykle wyrazy o treściach konkretnych, implikujących bezpośrednie odniesienia do rzeczywistości. Środki stylistyczne charakterystyczne dla stylu artystycznego w opisach realiów związanych z podróżowaniem nie są zbyt liczne. Większość zarejestrowanych przekształceń semantycznych to porównania, metafory, epitety oraz eufemizmy.
    The article contains a detailed analysis of the lexis and stylistic means used by Sienkiewicz in his descriptions of travel and travelling. The excerption included the collection of all 1,401 preserved private letters written by Sienkiewicz; the collection contains nearly 3,000 printed pages in a collective publication of the correspondence of Sienkiewicz edited by Maria Bokszczanin. In the collected material there are over 300 words and expressions of different character, used over a thousand times. The research has revealed that the accounts of the Sienkiewicz peregrinations in most cases are objective in character. The writer used words with precise meanings, which refer directly to the reality. The stylistic means typical of artistic style used in descriptions of travelling is not too numerous. Most of the registered semantic transformations are comparisons, epithets and euphemisms.

    Although formulaic expressions found in earlier correspondence have drawn scholarly attention, their (un)grammaticality has not been thoroughly researched. The present paper thus focuses on the two types of formulae with the verb remain found in private correspondence: one headed by 1st person pronoun (as in: we remain(s) your daughters), the other one starting with but/so/also/and/only (as in: but remain(s) your affectionate child until death). For the purpose of the study a corpus of 19th-century correspondence has been compiled and analyzed; additionally, the data from Dylewski (2013) have been taken into account. Next to the corpus scrutiny, an Internet search has been carried out to verify whether the use of the formulae at issue goes beyond the 19th century. An analysis from both a qualitative and quantitative angles allowed for putting forth a number of hypotheses concerning the origin of variation between -s-marked and unmarked forms as well as their distribution across letter-types and different geographical locations. The results of the analysis also corroborate the claim that -s on remain in the structures under discussion is neither a “part of the authentic local vernacular nor of authentic contemporary standard English, but part of a specific, localized practice of letter writing, which had its own linguistic rules” (Pietsch 2015: 226).

    Artykuł zawiera analizę leksyki potocznej zawartej w listach prywatnych Henryka Sienkiewicza. W ekscerpcji materiału uwzględniono całą zachowaną korespondencję rodzinną pisarza (1401 listów). Zebrane słownictwo i frazeologia o potocznej proweniencji ujawniły szereg właściwości języka listów Sienkiewicza, zwłaszcza dotyczących preferencji pisarza w doborze tej warstwy słownej, a także w zakresie funkcji, formy leksyki potocznej. Badania materiałowe zostały poprzedzone omówieniem (wybiórczym) zagadnień związanych z pojęciem potoczności (rozwój badań nad potocznością, bibliografia, poglądy) w ubiegłym wieku.
    The article contains the analysis of informal lexis used in Henryk Sienkiewicz’s private letters. Selected material encompasses entire preserved correspondence between the writer and his family (1401 letters). Collected vocabulary and phraseology of common provenance revealed several features of the language of Sienkiewicz’s letters, especially in terms of writer’s preferences in the selection of verbal layer as well as its form and function. Important part of conclusions and observations pertains to the colloquialism that is specific to letters (being functional texts) in diachrony. The material-based research is preceded by an overview of (selected) issues relating to the concept of colloquialism (development of studies on colloquialism, bibliography, opinions, standpoints) in the 20th century and today.

    The epistolary practice of giving information about one’s own well-being was common in the Ptolemaic Greek private letters: such a formula appeared in combination with the wish for the addressee’s health. In the Roman period, a new health wish arose in the Greek private letters, and the combination of this new formula valetudinis and the information about the sender’s health became rather rare (only about twenty occurrences). Such attestation often appear in letters of a Latin environment, for example letters written in Italy , letters from soldiers, or letters from areas in which the Romans were very active, like Eastern Desert. Given that the practice of giving information about one’s own well-being was common in Latin letters from the Roman period, I argue in this paper that the relative absence of this topos in Greek letters from Roman times is due to Latin influence.

    The article studies the contents of fi ve letters written by Zinaida Gippius in 1926–1932 to three persons: Nina Berberova, Vladislav Khodasevich and Alexandr Amfi teatrov. All the interlocutors, including Ivan Bunin, represent the fi rst wave of the Russian emigration. In her letters to the acquaintances Gippius shares remarks about Bunin as a man and an artist. With typical for her irony and arrogance, she refers to the works of her competitor revealing negative features of her character. Gippius letters also portray mechanisms of the social and cultural life of Russian emigrants originating from the older generation of writers.

    Opis:
    The considerations set out in the article are the reason for the studies on idiolects of extraordinary creative persons of the past ages. The basis for the study is 487 private letters of a Sultan’s painter – Stanisław Chlebowski (1835–1884), sent to the family settled in Krakow, and J.I. Kraszewski, living in Drezno. The aim of the discussion is the analysis of a linguistic layer of correspondence, including especially the lexical part and phraseology, which allow for a reconstruction of the artist-painter self-portrait – his self-assessment of own works, attitude towards art, creative work, signs of everyday life and social contacts of the sender. The examined means of linguistic discourse externalize the internal states of the writer, his emotional and evaluative attitude towards the presented content, especially himself.
