    Lidar-derivatives gathered during the realization of IT System of Country’s Protection Against Extreme Hazards (so-called ISOK programme) have initialized the non-invasive archaeological research concerning the preservation of the relicts of the former prisoner of war and internment camp in Tuchola, Poland. The camp functioned during the Great War (1914–1918) and the Polish-Soviet War (1919–1921). This paper discusses and summaries the preliminary results of this research. It argues that the use of ethnographic methods can supplement and enrich the historical records related to the camp. The article discusses in detail the assemblage of material culture made, remade, or personalized by prisoners and internees documented during the research. These artefacts are unique examples of trench art. Discussionconcerning the objects is the main goal of this paper. They are the first examples of the trench art related to the Tuchola camp analyzed in the archaeological literature.

    This article discusses the results of archaeological and anthropological research concerning material remains of a prisoner of war camp in Czersk (Pomeranian province, Poland) (Kriegsgefangenenlager Czersk). In the first part, I sketch a broader historical context related to building and functioning of the camp in forests around Czersk between 1914–1919. After that, the role and meaning of  archaeological research on such type of archaeological sites are presented. In the third part, I focus on a very special category of the camp heritage which is called trench art. The last part of this paper is a case study where an assemblage of objects classified as trench art that was found at the camp is described and interpreted. This text aims at highlighting the value of such prisoners and camp’s heritage. Such material culture is a material memory of extraordinary prisoners’ creativity behind barbed wire. It makes one aware of how every piece of trash, rubbish was re-cycled during day-to-day life behind barbed wire.

    The article contains terminological considerations concerning the term ‘camp literature’. In Polish literary studies it is most often referred to literature dealing with German Nazi camps, in particular concentration camps and death camps, and, less frequently, Soviet camps, especially forced labor camps. However, this definition turns out to be too narrow. It should also include the lesser-known works of Polish literature concerning, among others, the Polish internment camp (concentration camp) in Bereza Kartuska, communist labor camps set up in postwar Poland and the Spanish (Francoist) concentration camp in Miranda de Ebro. The term ‘camp literature’ could also include works on internment camps, prisoner camps, and even ghettos. The camp literaturę (not only Polish writings) requires, what is very important, a comparative approach.

    The document refers to Polish officers seized by the NKVD authorities in the summer of 1940 from internment camps in Lithuania and Latvia and imprisoned in the Kozelsk camp. The prisoners were subjected to massive indoctrination aimed at changing their ideological and political attitudes and recruiting from amongst them secret collaborators (confidants). Several dozens of Polish officers of lower ranks with leftist views started to cooperate, to varying degrees, with the Soviet authorities. They advocated close military and political cooperation with the USSR. They were ostracised by a vast majority of prisoners of war who remained faithful to their military oath.

    This paper is a case study of a prisoner of war and internment camp in Tuchola (Kujawsko-Pomorskie Province, Poland). The camp operated between 1914 and 1923. During the First World War it was run by Germans and later, during the Polish-Soviet War, by the Poles. The site provides a context for discussing two issues around archaeological research of the recent past. The first issue is how archaeology can be used to analyse the transformations of landscapes related to modern armed conflicts. The second point deals with the documentation and analysis of the remains of the camp using ALS derivatives. The main conclusion of this paper is that LiDAR technology can be also a useful tool in the context of approaching landscapes from the recent past.

    The history of the Nazi camp in Bogusze was initially documented during the Polish People’s Republic period, a time marked by limited research opportunities and constraints put on memory policy. The camp’s history was altered through the process of remembrance formation instituted by the Polish Society of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy. In the 1960s, a legend emerged surrounding the alleged execution of Italian prisoners of war held at the camp in Bogusze, and a guerrilla ambush of SS soldiers near the town of Ełk. This narrative first appeared in the verification documents of Władysław Świacki and Czesław Nalborski in 1964, gaining prominence through the literary work of Aleksander Omiljanowicz, published in 1965. This legend found its way into numerous scholarly publications, resulting in a distorted representation of the camp’s history. The absence of comprehensive source research perpetuated false narratives concerning the period of the camp’s existence, its names, size, and the identity and number of its victims. To address this, the author of this article conducted archival and source research to verify various episodes in the camp’s history. The camp in Bogusze existed from 1941 to 1944 and experienced a series of name and purpose changes. From June 1941 to June 1942, it was known as Oflag 56 and hosted Soviet POWs; from July 1942 to November 1942, it was still used to detain Soviet POWs under the name Stalag I E; and from 2 November 1942 to 3 January 1943, Polish Jews were held in the camp, which was then referred to as Sammellager. From January 1943 to May 1944, the camp in Bogusze was again used to detain Soviet POWs, this time under the name Stalag I F/Z Prostken. Additionally, the camp, referred to as Stalag I B/PR, was used to hold interned Italians between September 1943 and May 1944. In January and February 1944, Volksdeutsche evacuated from Ukraine were hosted in Lager Bogusche, and Polish residents of frontline villages and towns were held at Stalag 373 from May to December 1944. At its peak, the camp encompassed an area of 30 hectares. Post-war investigations suggest that approximately 25,000 individuals may be buried in the camp’s cemetery and execution site.

    The article describes the life of Major Zygmunt Kunisz, one of the victims of the Soviet crime of 1940. He was an artillery officer of armoured trains during the Polish-Bolshevik war, and after the war he served in the 22nd and 28th Light Artillery Regiment, and from 1935 as quartermaster in the 4th Heavy Artillery Regiment. In September 1939, he took command of the newly formed 1st artillery battalion of this Regiment, which he commanded during the September Campaign. After the Soviet aggression against Poland, Major Zygmunt Kunisz was taken prisoner by the Soviets in unknown circumstances. He spent several months in a prisoner-of-war camp in Starobelsk and was then murdered in a prison in Kharkov in April 1940. In Polish literature, this officer was often confused with his younger brother Tadeusz, also an artillery officer in the rank of major, in reports relating to the September 1939 campaign. This paper is based mainly on archival documents, memoirs and materials provided by Maria Kunisz, granddaughter of Stanisław Kunisz, Zygmunt’s older brother. The purpose of this article is to clarify the discrepancies and misinformation still existing in relation to Major Zygmunt Kunisz, who was posthumously promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in 2007.
    Artykuł opisuje życie majora Zygmunta Kunisza – jednej z ofiar zbrodni sowieckiej z 1940 r. Był on oficerem artylerii między innymi pociągach pancernych w czasie wojny polskobolszewickiej, a po jej zakończeniu służył w 22 i 28 pułku artylerii lekkiej, zaś od 1935 r. kwatermistrzem w 4 pułku artylerii ciężkiej. We wrześniu 1939 r. objął dowództwo nowo sformowanego I dywizjonu tego pułku, którym dowodził w trakcie kampanii wrześniowej. Po agresji sowieckiej na Polskę – major Zygmunt Kunisz dostał się w bliżej nieznanych okolicznościach do niewoli sowieckiej. Przez kilka miesięcy przebywał w obozie jenieckim w Starobielsku, po czym w kwietniu 1940 r. został zamordowany w więzieniu w Charkowie. Postać tego oficera była w polskiej literaturze często mylona w odniesieniu do kampanii wrześniowej 1939 roku z jego młodszym bratem Tadeuszem – także oficerem artylerii w stopniu majora. Tekst został oparty w głównej mierze na dokumentach archiwalnych oraz wspomnieniach i materiałach przekazanych przez Marię Kunisz – wnuczkę Stanisława Kunisza, starszego brata Zygmunta. Artykuł ten ma na celu wyjaśnić istniejące nadal rozbieżności i błędne informacje na temat majora Zygmunta Kunisza, awansowanego w pośmiertnie w 2007 r. na stopień podpułkownika.

    Już od najdawniejszych czasów odróżniano sprawiedliwość wojny ius ad bellum, od sprawiedliwości na wojnie ius in bello. Intencją ius ad bellum jest ocena i prawna analiza agresji i obrony na tą agresję. Z kolei ius in bello wymaga od nas osądów na temat poszanowania lub naruszania zwyczajów i przyjętych reguł walki. Od żołnierzy stron biorących udział w konflikcie zbrojnym wymaga się wzajemnego szacunku i uznania. Prawa, obowiązki i sposób traktowania uczestników konfliktów zbrojnych są zawarte w Konwencjach genewskich z 1949 roku oraz Protokołach Dodatkowych I i II do tych Konwencji. Jednak często się zdarza, że te zasady „kodeksu wojskowego” są nieprzestrzegane przez walczące strony. Podobne przypadki miały miejsce w trakcie konfliktu na wschodzie Ukrainy. W artykule Autor starał się przedstawić, jak przez dowództwo ukraińskie oraz separatystów są traktowani żołnierze (bojownicy), którzy w trakcie walk dostali się w ręce strony przeciwnej. Ponadto zwrócił uwagę, że nadal znaczna część uczestników konfliktów zbrojnych nie wykazuje wrażliwości na ograniczenia zawarte w konwencjach genewskich.
    Since the immemorial the ideas of a right to war (jus ad bellum) has been differentiated from rights in war (jus in bello). The intent behind the former is the evaluation and legal analysis of aggression and response to it. On the other hand, the latter requires judgments on respecting or violating customs and adopted code of conduct in war. Mutual respect and recognition are required from soldiers participating in an armed conflict. The rights, obligations and treatment of participants in armed conflicts are enshrined in 1949 Geneva Conventions and their two additional Protocols. Still, it happens often that the ‘military code’ is not observed by the belligerents. It has happened in the conflict in eastern Ukraine. In the article the author has attempted to present how the Ukrainian command and the separatists treat soldiers and other combatants who have been taken prisoners during the fighting. In addition, he has put emphasis on the fact that that a significant part of participants in armed conflicts does not show responsiveness to limitations envisaged by the Geneva Conventions.

    The paper presents information about POW camps in Western Pomerania during World War II and describes the activities of electricians – Polish prisoners of war in the POW camp Woldenberg II C (now Dobiegniew) between 1940 and 1945. It was the largest camp for the officers of Polish Army captured by the Germans in September Campaign in 1939. Many of the Polish reserve officers in civilian life were intellectual elite in pre-war Poland: engineers, scientists, high-ranking managers etc. Peak number of Polish officers in Woldenberg II C can be estimated on level of 7 thousands. Basing on experiences of Association of Polish Electrical Engineers officers in this POW camp started activities in electrical sciences and technologies called secret ‘University of Woldenberg’. This action of Polish officers is unique achievement in the European history of education. They developed the project of the electrification program for post-war Poland and the use of water resources in Podkarpacie and Pomerania for hydro-generation of electric power. There were impressive celebrations in the camp organized on August 6, 1944 under the slogan "SEP Days". The summary of the work includes information on the commemoration of the prisoners' work and proposals for honoring the merits of electricians imprisoned in Woldenberg camp for the development of Polish electrical engineering.
    W pracy przedstawiono informacje o obozach jenieckich na Pomorzu Zachodnim w trakcie II wojny światowej oraz opisano działalność elektryków w obozie jenieckim w Woldenbergu II C w latach 1940-1945, obecnie Dobiegniew. Był to największy obóz dla polskich oficerów i równocześnie polskiej elity intelektualnej w III Rzeszy, w którym w szczytowym okresie było blisko 7 tys. osób. Scharakteryzowano, wzorowaną na doświadczeniach Stowarzyszenia Elektryków Polskich, działalność edukacyjną na tajnym uniwersytecie woldenberskim oraz naukowo-techniczną. Organizowane działania podjęte przez oficerów polskich były zjawiskiem niepowtarzalnym w europejskiej historii oświaty. Wskazano zasługi grupy inżynierów elektryków, którzy opracowali projekt programu elektryfikacji kraju i wykorzystania zasobów wodnych Podkarpacia i Pomorza. Odnotowano imponujące obchody w obozie, jakie w dniu 6 sierpnia 1944 roku zorganizowano pod hasłem „Dni SEP”. W podsumowaniu pracy zamieszczono informację na temat upamiętnienia dzieła jeńców oraz przedstawiono wnioski i propozycje dotyczące uhonorowania zasług elektryków — Woldenberczyków dla rozwoju polskiej elektryki.
