Kowalczyk Marcin, Człowiek kultury druku w świecie przyszłości – kino science fiction wobec teorii środków przekazu Marshalla McLuhana [Man of Print Culture in the Future World – Science Fiction Cinema and Marshall McLuhan’s Media Theory]. „Przestrzenie Teorii” 32. Poznań 2019, Adam Mickiewicz University Press, pp. 239–255. ISSN 1644-6763. DOI 10.14746/pt.2019.32.12. This article shows the way of presenting the characters who represent print culture in science fiction cinema. All the printed artifacts, like literature, books and letters, are defined according to Marshall McLuhan’s media theory. The analysis is based mostly on the movie Her (dir. Spike Jonze, 2013) and discusses how SF movies adapt and transform the twentieth-century predictions concerning print as a medium. This approach allows us to avoid a simple interpretation of the problem, where books or print become merely a sign of civilization that has passed. Furthermore, McLuhan’s theory helps effectively reveal the complex motivations of the characters who are shaped by a specific medium.

Opis:
This article aims to shedsome critical light on two episodes in the biography of Jan Latosz (Joannes Latosinus, 1539–1608), which are related to his attempts at winning the patronage of Duke Nicholas Christopher ‘the Orphan’ Radziwiłł (1549–1616). Latosz is well known due to his involvement in calendrical polemics at the end of 16th century. As a result of his attacks on the newly introduced Gregorian calendar, his works were banned and the astrologer himself was expelled from the Academy of Cracow. Today, we have access to a limited number of his works, mostly those published in 1590s and 1600s and even his major work dedicated to calendar reform remains unknown. The works of Latosz that came down to us either as prints or in the form of manuscript copies provide important, yet fragmentary, information onhow he tried to establish patronage relations with a number of influential figures in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. One of his early prognostications – the Obwieszczenie [Announcement] of 1572 – was dedicated to Duke Radziwiłł, yet it seems that this publication did not result in a long-lasting relationship. However, there is another piece of understudied evidence which can be found in Latosz’s letter to Radziwiłł of 27 December 1594. In the light of this letter, it seems that in 1594 Latosz succeeded in publishing another prognostication dedicated to the duke, most likely in the hope that Radziwiłł would protect him from attacks by the Jesuits and Cracow academics. While the article discusses information that can be excerpted from Latosz’s writings addressed to Radziwiłł, the appendices provide editions of the dedicatory letter from 1572 and a brief letter from 1594.

Opis:
The main goal of the paper is to answer the question of what was unique about the use of books in Vilnius between 1522 and 1610. The reason to take a closer look at the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania is the fact that it has always been a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-religious city. This observation allows the author to assume that the use of books there could have been different than in other European cities of the time. To find possible answers to the question posed, the author traces the changes in production, distribution and reading of books in the city. The research is based on several sorts of sources, such as printed books, manuscripts and documents from Vilnius archives (mainly the municipal archive, the Catholic chapter, the castle court etc.). He was supported by contemporary studies about early modern Vilnius scriptoria and printing houses (Kawecka-Gryczowa, Topolska, Nikalaieu), bookbinders (Laucevičius), book writing (Ulčinaitė, Narbutienė, Narbutas) and the history of the city (Frick). At the beginning of the paper the author recalls the main facts about Vilnius in the 16th century. The city had increasingly grown in importance as a political, economical and cultural centre of the Jagiellonian monarchy. The central part, divided in four chronologically arranged chapters, focuses on several problems, among them: the beginnings of Cyrillic prints and Skaryna’s printing house, languages and alphabets of books (Latin, Ruthenian, Polish, Lithuanian, German, Hebrew, Yiddish and Arabic), book production, dissemination, storage and reading. The author notices that a significant contributing factor to the spreading book culture in Vilnius was the royal court and chancery. He puts emphasis on the significance of humanistic schools that were established in Vilnius in the 2nd half of the 16th century by four different Christian confessions (Calvinist, Catholic, Lutheran and Orthodox). The most influential one was the Jesuit Academy of Vilnius. This process was accompanied by the establishment of no less than 11 printing houses. Having said that, the author argues that books printed in Vilnius, imported to the city and held in its libraries reflect a fruitful competition between main religious communities. At the end, the author reaches the conclusion that the use of books in Vilnius was similar to other European cities of the time, yet the capital of Lithuania still seems to be a good deal more complex a case. He ventures a hypothesis that the book can be deemed as one of the tools or factors by which religious or ethnic identity in Vilnius was defined.

Seria rycin, w większości wzorowanych na kompozycjach Hansa Brosamera, ujawnia strategie Daubmanna w zakresie pozyskiwania i używania klocków drzeworytniczych, przywiezionych z Norymbergi w 1554 r. Z kolei szesnastowieczna oprawa, dzieło wielkopolskiego introligatora Melchiora Neringa, a także źródła pisane, dają wgląd w pewne aspekty dystrybucji postylli Seehofera/Trepki poza Prusami. Skłaniają też do zapytania o pierwszych właścicieli egzemplarza, którzy jednak pozostają nieznani.
In the paper the unique copy of Arsatius Seehofer’s postil in the Polish translation by Eustachy Trepka is discussed; printed by Hans Daubmann in Königsberg in 1556, it is currently in the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel. It remains unclear under what circumstances the volume reached the library, still it ranks among the most precious Poland-related items in the original collection of August zu Braunschweig-Lüneburg. Furthermore, being the only to-date identified copy of Seehofer/Trepka’s postil from 1556, it allows to analyse the programme of illustrations of the edition. A series of prints, in majority modelled on Hans Brosamer’s compositions, reveal Daubmann’s strategy as far as acquiring and using woodblocks brought from Nuremberg in 1554 are concerned. The 16th-century binding, in its turn, a work of the bookbinder Melchior Nering from Greater Poland, as well as written sources, provide insight into certain aspects of the distribution of Seehofer/Trepka’s postil outside Prussia. They also make one wonder who the first owners of the copy were; the latter, regrettably, to-date unidentified.

Opis:
On May 7, 1904 the prohibition against the Lithuanian press was lifted. It was one of the most significant events that had a direct influence on the evolution of Lithuanian cultural, political and social life. Because of its importance it can be considered as the beginning of Lithuanian modernity. The aim of this reaserch paper is to demonstrate the significance of this turning point and to discuss the genesis of modern era by analysing the period preceding this event, in Lithuanian historiography called “the era of press ban” or “the time of book smugglers”. This period begun in 1864, when czarist authority prohibited the press in latin alphabet and tried to enforce the Russian one. During these 40 years of Lithuanian fight for freedom of printing, the proces of social and cultural changes were initiated. At that time, the first cultural institutions gathering a new generation of intelligentsia, using Lithuanian language, were born, and new forms of self-organization and the new cycles of ideas were shaped. Those processes were related to spreading the types and practices of printing word, available through illegal and well-organised publishing network. From this perspective, the period in which the seeds of Lithuanian modernity were created was a variant of the development of the printing culture, characteristic for Central and Eastern Europe.

Opis:
The author presents the origins of printing techniques and their application to production of books dating from the earliest achievements in this field in China until the beginning of typographic art in Europe in the mid-fifteenth century. Attention was focused on technical aspects of the Johannes Gutenberg’s invention and the art of printing components, such as typographic material, ink and printing press. The evolution of typography in Europe and other continents was presented as well as its effects on the rise of censorship, rediscovery of antiquity, forming of the profession of qualified writers, copyright law, development of critical research, standardization and nationalization of the print, spelling and orthography of national languages. Attention was also paid to the process of constituting the form of a book adequate for typography, to changes in the way of reading, and to impact of printing on the increase in communications capabilities inherent in written and printed word.

The article is a proposal to answer the question of how we are shaped by the digital experience. Considerations taken in the context of transforming the culture of writing and printing into digital culture, aim to show how our ways of writing and reading, and with them thinking, cognition and constructing and expressing oneself through the increasing access to modern technologies and the Internet, are changing. The research is also aimed at determining the possible consequences of transformations in the field of culture and anthropology. As a starting point, I take Zygmunt Bauman's concept of liquid modernity, Erich Fromm’s ideas on having and being, as well as the analysis of post-media condition by Piotr Celiński, literacy in the era of digital culture by Henning Lobin and network society by Manuel Castells.

This article concerns the short genealogical history of speech and writing media, which simultaneously takes an advantage of, develops as well as reconstructs, the appropriate points of view and attitudes by Peter Sloterdijk. The object of analysis is a discursive formation on speech and writing shaped in western culture, a formation consisting of arguments and imaginations contained in the Bible, philosophical writings, by Plato and Hegel mainly, and literature, indicated here only very slightly. Social history is eventually discused here, that is the view of revolutions and colonialism through the prism of print/writing medium — through the relationships of power and domination based on this medium. All the discursive and social events have their common resentment background according to Sloterdijk — following Nietzsche he assumes that there are cruelty and perversion that lurk at the roots of culture. The question is: why does he do that, what new does the historically worn-out interpretational frame let him tell about the media in the past and today?
