Opis:
Misconceptions are widely present among the students of all ages. The aim of this investigation was to determine the presence of misconceptions in understanding physical properties of water and to identify the most common ones. Quantitative analysis of data from the diagnostic conceptual test was performed on a sample of 243 first and third grade students from three elementary schools in Sombor, Serbia. It was shown that the impact of gender and school affiliation were not proven to be statistically significant factors in test achievements, while the children’s age significantly affects test results, as expected. Synthetic and scientifically correct answers were more frequent among the third grade students, while spontaneous answers were more common among the first graders. Nevertheless, a significant proportion of spontaneous answers implies that misconceptions about physical properties of water are almost identical and deep-rooted among students of both ages. Identifying children’s misconceptions provides a basis for development of accurate conceptual understanding.

Primary English Language Teaching (PELT)
Opis:
Teaching EFL in primary school is no longer a novelty but firmly established in the education landscape throughout Europe and many countries worldwide. Primary English language teaching (PELT) is a unique branch of ELT insofar as it entails both the teaching of children and beginners. While PELT teachers and PELT teacher educators largely agree that this concurrence of ‘young plus beginning’ requires a focus on vocabulary, speaking and listening, introduced and practiced through songs, games, stories, roleplaying and embodiment techniques such as Total Physical Response, pragmatic aspects often take a backseat in PELT teacher training and by extension in the PELT classroom, even though it has been established that pragmatics instruction is necessary and feasible on all proficiency levels, right from the beginning. This article discusses possible reasons for this omission and illustrates with authentic examples why pragmatics should play a bigger role in the training of primary English teachers

As the world emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to struggle with armed conflicts, creative and ethical solutions to the controversial issues of recent years are needed globally. While creativity is necessary, it must also be ethically sound. Today, discussing creativity in relation to its ethical dimensions has also been emphasized in the perspective of sustainable development, but research on the teaching and learning of ethical creativity remains limited. Therefore, the aim of this paper is twofold: 1) to describe how primary schools engage students on ethical creativity and 2) to suggest a didactic model for ethical creativity based on the teaching strategies found in a literature review. Internationally, creativity and ethics have been addressed in curricula and studied within the field of education. However, research on the ethical dimensions of creativity (ethical creativity) is limited. Based on a literature review, five teaching strategies for engaging primary school students on ethical creativity have been identified. The common features among the five teaching strategies relate to the use of 1) digital tools/media, 2) art and literature, 3) real problems and dilemmas, and 4) enquiry-based learning. A three-step teaching model is suggested for teaching ethical creativity. The implications of the paper relate to enhancing ethical creativity among our children, who are both future citizens and leaders in various professions in the global society.

This study explores the use of educational technology for teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) at 10 state schools in the South of Ecuador. It aims to find out the current state of the use of technology in English classrooms. The research combines both quantitative and qualitative methods to gather information about the use of technology in the teaching-learning process. The main instruments applied were teachers’ and students’ surveys and observation sheets. One hundred and fifty students and fifteen teachers took part in the surveys and were observed once a week during a period of four months. The findings confirm that technology is not commonly used in state schools of the south region of Ecuador or, if used, it is not adequately applied. For this reason, in order to develop students’ performance of all four language skills it is necessary to integrate technology tools combined with appropriate teaching strategies in EFL classrooms.

Global research studies on distance education in foreign language learning focus primarily on secondary schools or higher education. The paper examines primary school foreign language teachers’ (n=119) perceptions of distance teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to face-to-face education. The purpose of the study was to investigate the quality, achieved learning outcomes, advantages and obstacles faced by FL teachers in remote teaching. Based on the e-questionnaire, our study indicated that distance FL teaching was more challenging and stressful than classroom teaching because primary school students were not responsive to technology and needed parental guidance. Primary school students rely on cognitive and socio-emotional support from the FL teacher.

The role of foreign language teaching at an early age is proving very important today for a variety of reasons. There are various approaches to this topic in the literature, many of which point out that in the development of the human brain, certain phases can be identified that should be taken into account in for¬eign language learning. These phases are referred to in the literature using the time window metaphor. The various aspects of language learning by young learners will be addressed in the volume published in 2019, the results of which will be presented in the paper.

This research aims to study the psychometric properties and theoretical structure of the Serbian version of the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs Instrument (MTEBI) which was developed by Enochs, Smith and Huinker (2000). The sample consisted of 252 preservice primary and preschool teachers from teacher education faculties in Serbia. The original MTEBI indicated acceptable reliability (α=0.779). The results of confirmatory factor analysis indicate that the fit of the original MTEBI model to the data is not acceptable, but the re-specified model (MTEBI12) shows good fit and acceptable reliability (α=0.742). These findings indicate that a short 12 item version of MTEBI possesses adequate psychometric properties and is applicable to the sample of respondents in the Republic of Serbia.

The article presents the manner of work of science teachers on the basis of students’ opinions. The research included 870 6th grade primary school students, whose teachers had different work experience and level of education. The authors used the diagnostic survey as the research method. Flander’s analysis category system was used for the analysis of classroom interactions. In order to establish the relationship between the pairs of quality variables, the chi-square test of independence was used. It has been found that the teaching style is consistent with an adopted teaching model. There are two main types of teaching models: a model based on cognitive psychology and behavioural psychology. The model is reflected in the teacher’s teaching style, which might be reactive or directive. In the students’ opinion science teachers, particularly those with the shortest work experience, most often transmit their knowledge to students during classes (directive style). Those with more seniority and experience encourage students to perform certain tasks more frequently (reactive style). Science teacher’s education does not influence the teaching style and the majorityof teachers prefer a syncretic style. Students of the teacherspreferring a directive style revealed lower interest in sciencethan those who were taught in reactive style. As a result of this disinterest, the studied students only occasionallyperformed activities in direct contact with nature.

English is an important language of learning in all schools. It is the language of international communication, technology, higher education, commerce and industry. Its use as the working language in the world has made it vital for our students to attain a sound knowledge of English. Today when much information is transmitted and published in English it is essential that our students acquire the skill of this language for their various needs. Teaching English should be skill based, activity oriented, student centered, communicative, fun to learn. The language teaching can only be effective if we can integrate language skills with games and other activities In this article, I want to present importance of learning English at primary level. What is more, the profile of young learners who enjoy games and activities, and a significance role of teachers, who should work with interesting methods and techniques. Because the way a teacher teaches is one of the most important aspects of quality education.

This theoretical paper reviews the major theories and models of learning and views them in the light of two major psychological perspectives of learning; behaviorist and constructivist. The educational process has become the dominant response to challenges in all the domains of modern life. The key to a good primary education is the quality of its teachers. Quality education enables people to develop all of their attributes and skills in order to achieve their potential as human beings and members of society. A deeper understanding of the students’ behavior enables the teacher to help guide them through the educational process. Understanding development, or the long-term changes in growth, behavior, and knowledge, helps teachers to hold appropriate expectations for students as well as to keep students’ individual diversity in perspective. From kindergarten through the end of high school, students double their height, triple their weight, experience the social and hormonal effects of puberty, and improve basic motor skills.

Mother tongue is not only the language of communication, but also the guardian of tradition and culture. It preserves all earlier linguistic periods and an overall cultural memory of a nation. For this reason, the school subject of the Serbian Language is important for building students’ national identity and it is indeed the most important school subject in primary education. In the processes of organizing, planning, and teaching, a due attention must be given to the elements of national culture that are built in the language and, specifically, in literary works. It is only in this way that literature can fully perform its linguistic, aesthetic, and identity role. This paper looks at the Serbian culture content in the early primary school curricula. Taking the new curricula for the first four grades of primary school as a starting point, the authors analyse the objectives, outcomes, instructions, and the prescribed content in which different layers of Serbian culture are incorporated. The goal of the research is to examine the representation, effects, and a creative impact of culture in the Serbian Language and the literary texts included in the compulsory reading lists. The paper analyses the works belonging to national and contemporary literature, as well as to different genres (epic national poetry, short stories, and contemporary children’s literature). Our conclusion is that the examined material contains the notes, guidelines, and many contents that in the first cycle of primary education draw attention to the diversity and richness of beliefs, ideas, behavioural patterns, and spiritual heritage of Serbian (national) culture.

Sustainable development in education is the basis of sustainable development of society. To ensure sustainable development in education, its principles need to be implemented in all training courses. Higher pedagogical education should provide training in designing and teaching such courses. At our universities, future primary school teachers are trained to keep their maths lessons in line with the principles of sustainable development in three key areas. The first area relates to the development of pupils’ social involvement through their acquisition of intellectual and practical skills of using maths. The second area concerns pupils’ relationship with their natural and cultural environment. Future teachers are trained to design tasks that stimulate pupils’ emotional engagement and caring attitude. The third area that future teachers are trained to target is pupils’ economic and financial competence. Teaching skills in all these areas can be developed effectively through the case method.
