This work is concerned with the propagation of rapidly oscillating electromagnetic (EM) signal in a Lorentz dispersive medium. The problem considered here is 1-dimensional and its exact solution is described by a contour integral defined in a complex frequency plane. With the use of uniform asymptotic techniques, approximate representation for the total field consisting of the Sommerfeld and Brillouin precursors and the main signal is obtained. The effect of the rate of envelope changes, as well as of carrier frequency on the shape of the total signal is examined.

Al2 O3 -Al2 TiO5 -TiO2 composites can be obtained by the infiltration of molecular titanium precursors into presintered α-Al2 O3 (corundum) cylinders. Two titanium tetra alkoxides, and two dialkoxy titanium bis (acetylacetonates) serve as precursors for TiO2 (rutile) and Al2 TiO5 (tialite). The precursors were infiltrated as ethanolic solutions. After sintering at 1550, 1600, and 1650°C, the prepared ceramics’ properties were investigated by SEM, in-situ HT-XRD, and conventional XRD. Titanium tetraisopropoxide leads to the highest content of Al2 TiO5 in the composite. The more reactive the precursor, considering the Al2 O3 /precursor interface, the lower and more anisotropic the grain growth, the more homogeneous is the TiO2 contribution and the higher is the content of Al2 TiO5 . Raising the sintering temperature causes an increase of the crystalline Al2 TiO5 content as well as of the grain growth. Moreover, the reactivity of the precursor molecule influences the Ti/(Al+Ti) ratio in the obtained tialite phase.

The author analyzes the work Chrétiens désunis. Principes d’un «œcumenisme» catholique by Yves Congar (1937) and shows why the French Dominican can be considered a precursor of ecumenism in the Roman Catholic Church. The argument is based on defining the nature of the reunification process, its starting point, the goal of the reunification, and the way in which the relationship between Catholicism and ecumenism is framed. In lieu of the then valid concept of conversion on the basis of the Catholic Church, or the simple absorption of individuals by the fully formed Church, the French theologian proposes a complement or integration into the unity of the Church. As a result of this process, the united Church would be no other body than the present Catholic Church but it would be richer and more complete.

W pracy zbadano wpływ wyciągu filierowago na właściwości nanokompozytowych włókien PAN zawierających alternatywnie nanosrebro bądź układ dwóch nanododatków: nanosrebro i hydroksyapatyt. Otrzymane włókna charakteryzowały się wytrzymałością na poziomie zbliżonym do 40 cN/tex oraz podwyższoną porowatością.
This paper explores the influence of the as-spun draw ratio on the properties of nanocomposite PAN fibres containing either nanosilver or a system of two nano-additives: nanosilver and hydroxyapatite. The fibres obtained were characterized by a tensile strength of approximately 40 cN/tex and an increased porosity.

Biotransformation of deuterated-4'-O-methylnorbelladine into alkaloids galanthamine and lycorine in tissue cultures of Leucojum aestivum was demonstrated using HPLC coupled to mass spectrometry. GC-MS screening was also carried to investigate other native and deuterated alkaloids. A total of six labeled alkaloids were identified indicating that 4'-O-methyl-d3-norbelladine is incorporated into three different groups of Amaryllidaceae alkaloids that are biosynthesized by three modes of intramolecular oxidative phenol coupling.

For the treatment of surface water, the coagulation process was used with highly alkaline polyaluminium chloride PAX-XL19F and coagulation supported by ozonation and adsorption on powdered activated carbon CWZ-30 for reducing the level of surface water pollution with organic substances. In addition to the typical indices used to assess the content of organic compounds (total organic carbon TOC, oxidisability OXI, ultraviolet absorbance UV254), the study also evaluated colour, turbidity, and the potential of trihalomethanes formation THM-PF. Reduction in the content of TOC in water after coagulation ranged from 22 to 24%, OXI in the range of 34-36%, and UV254 absorbance from 52-55%. The turbidity and colour of the water was reduced by 70-73% and 56-60%, respectively. The use of preliminary ozonation and activated carbon-assisted coagulation increased the efficiency of water treatment. Changes in the values of TOC, OXI, UV254 absorbance, turbidity and colour were 28-33%, 45-46%, 69-73%, 72-79% and 89-100%, respectively. In the water purified by coagulation and then chlorinated, THM-PF was 37-38% lower than in untreated surface water. The use of additional pre-ozonation and activated carbon during coagulation increased the reduction of THM-PF by 9-12%.

Nanocrystalline Cu-Zn ferrites have been synthesized using precursor method. Cu-Zn ferrites were formed at low temperature without any impurities. The particle sizes were observed to decrease from 60 nm to 50 nm with increasing non-magnetic Zn doping. Cu is used to decrease the sintering temperature. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and IR analysis of Cu-Zn revealed the formation of Single-Phase Spinel structure at very low annealing temperature. The particle sizes observed from XRD is very well in agreement with SEM analysis. Cu-Zn ferrite nanoparticles were observed to be dependent on the particle size. Saturation (Ms) and Remanence (Mr) magnetization of ferrites increases due to the modifications occurred among the A-B, A-A and B-B interactions of Spinel structure. The Coercive force (Hc) decreases with increase of Zn ions concentration.

A thermal decomposition of a cobalt-lanthanum catalyst precursor containing a mixture of cobalt and lanthanum compounds obtained by co-precipitation were studied using thermal analysis coupled with mass spectrometry (TG-MS). Studies revealed that the calcination in air at 500°C is sufficient to transform the obtained cobalt precipitate into Co3 O4 , but it leads to only partial decomposition of lanthanum precipitate. In order to obtain Co/La catalyst precursor containing La2 O3  the calcination in air at the temperature about 800°C is required. However, it is unfavorable from the point of view of textural properties of the catalyst precursor. A strong effect of storage conditions on the phase composition of the studied cobalt-lanthanum catalyst precursor, caused by the formation of lanthanum hydroxide and lanthanum carbonates from La2 O3  when contacting with air, was observed.

Internal structure of metal foams is one of the most important factors that determine its mechanical properties. There exists a number of methods for studying the nature of the inner porous structure. Unfortunately most of these processes is destructive and therefore it is not possible to reuse the sample. From this point of view, as a suitable method seems to be the ability of using the so-called X-ray microtomography (also micro-CT). This is a non-destructive methodology used in a number of fields (industry, science, archaeology, medicine) for a description of the material distribution in the space (e.g. pores, fillers, defects, etc.). In principle, this technology works on different absorption of X-ray radiation by materials with changing proton number. The contribution was worked out in collaboration with experts from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of the VŠB-Technical University of Ostrava and it is focused on the analysis of internal structure of the metal foam casting with irregular arrangement of internal pores by using micro-CT. The obtained data were evaluated in the commercial software VGStudio MAX 2.2 and in the FOTOMNG system. For the evaluation of these data a new specialized module was introduced in this system. Several methods of pre-processing the image was prepared for the measurement. This preliminary processing consists, for example, from a binary image thresholding for better diversity between the internal porosity and the material itself or functions for colour inversion.

The present article describes selected aspects of investment casting technology for manufacturing of open-cell aluminium. The main focus is, among others, on the precursor thickening. Two groups of total 30 samples were produced, basing on open-cell polyurethane foam used as the precursor. Each of the two sample groups was thickened with a different type of suspension consisting of carbonaceous substances and organic binders. The influence of the coating mixture type was compared, leading to conclusions regarding the desired composition and fluidity of the suspensions. Both sample groups of the obtained open-cell aluminium had stochastic cell distributions, the average pore diameter was 5.2 mm and the PPI index was 8. The apparent densities were respectively: 0.485 g/cm3 and 0.312 g/cm3 , which reflected the impact of the precursor coating. Additionally, samples from both groups differed in quality.

Introduction. Alzheimer disease (AD) is one of the best-known diseases. It is neurodegenerative disease characterized by gradual memory loss and dysfunction of behaviour. The pathogenesis of this disease is unclear. Icariin (ICA) is a flavonoid found in a Chinese medicinal herb. It is recognised for a wide range of biological and medical activities: anti-tumour and anti-inflammatory, and also has an impact on the nervous system: stimulates neuroproliferation and prevents neuron’s apoptosis. ICA may have a potential role in AD disease treatment. Objective. The purpose of this article is to review current knowledge about mechanisms and use of ICA in AD treatment. State of knowledge. AD does not present established pathomechanism, about which there are some hypotheses. Each hypothesis mentioned and checked in this review, with result that ICA may have a potential role. One well-known hypothesis is that about amylolytic which is associated with amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene mutation, which leads to amyloid beta (Aβ) protein accumulation and to occurenc of the disease. In this hypothesis, ICA may inhibit Aβ protein aggregation or alter APP expression. ICA may stifle neuronal apoptosis and promote neurogenesis and neuromodulation. According to other hypotheses, ICA could also impact on iron overload in the brain, harmful for neurons hyperhomocysteinaemia, disorder of the intracellular calcium management. Modification of theTau protein structure is another one theory of ICA action. Flavonoid from China may also have an influence on axonal transport. Conclusions. According to the literature there is no single mechanism of ICA action in slowing down AD progress. A wide range of therapeutic points is demonstrated by the broad effect of this substance. Further research is mandatory.

Currently, liquid explosives pose a potential threat. An important phase in the assessment of this threat is to investigate the various synthesis paths leading to their manufacture and to evaluate the potential use of readily purchasable precursors. The aim of this work was to assess the synthesis of Ethylene Glycol Dinitrate (EGDN), a liquid nitrate ester explosive, using commercially available precursors. The characteristics of the synthetic process (ease, yield), the chemical properties of the synthesized product (purity, spectra) and its explosive properties (sensitivities, detonability) were investigated. Comparisons are drawn between these products and the product obtained using laboratory ingredients. Three ingredients have been used: 1) ethylene glycol, laboratory grade, 2) ready to use, commercial coolant fluid, and 3) ethylene glycol extracted from commercial coolant fluid. The chemical composition and purity of the synthesized liquid explosive was analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS), and infrared spectroscopy (IR). Differential Scanning Calorimetric (DSC) analysis allowed the heat of decomposition and activation energies to be assessed. The Ozawa and Kissinger models were used. The explosive properties of the pure synthesized products and comparable other explosives, have been tested. The potential use as a priming charge or as a main charge was assessed.
