Opis:
Based on ethnographic research in 28 young middle-class households in Warsaw, this paper examines the money practices of couples living together, including how they set rules for budgeting, spending, and saving money. Drawing from practice theory and working with evidence gathered among young Poles, the paper shows how the couples jointly create a financial arrangement and then ground it in daily practices, transform it, and adjust it to changing circumstances. As the partners share a practical understanding and the rules are intelligible to each of them, this arrangement reflects the current order in the given household. By reconstructing the explicit or tacit beliefs as to why certain money practices are appropriate, desirable, acceptable, or completely inadmissible, this paper argues that everyday money practices are moral in nature and that a financial arrangement requires moral justification.

This article seeks to understand why it is relatively easy for today’s individuals to acquire new behaviors, how the mechanism behind such acquisition developed, and how it is socially coordinated. Empirical findings reveal that new behaviors are mostly acquired unthinkingly. Hence, revisiting practice theory, I propose the concept of meta-habit to help us understand the blind and automatic acquisition of new behaviors. According to Pierre Bourdieu, habitus acquired primarily in childhood generates practices and contributes to the reproduction of the social order. Meta-habit includes disposal toward being open to situational context, toward inquisitiveness, and toward reading the external clues of behavior. Meta-habit generates practices on the basis of influences in the symbolic community: in this way practices are coordinated socially. Meta-habit is responsible for the reproduction of the social order in situations when the social space is very dynamic-this being the case of late modernity, which is a system comprising myriads of fields.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest program teoretyczno-badawczy ujmujący parę intymną jako formę praktykowania bliskości, miłości i troski, zakorzenionych w praktykach życia codziennego. W ramach tego programu proponujemy analizę o charakterze: relacyjnym, nienormatywnym, intersekcjonalnym oraz procesualnym. Najpierw wyjaśniamy, dlaczego kategoria pary intymnej jest użyteczna, uzupełniając, a także zastępując takie kategorie, jak rodzina, jednostka i gospodarstwo domowe. Druga część tekstu jest poświęcona korzyściom, które wnoszą do badań par intymnych teorie praktyk społecznych, z ich naciskiem na wiedzę milczącą i habitualną, cielesność i emocjonalność, materialność oraz symbolikę i kontekst działań. Proponowany program teoretyczno-badawczy stanowi syntezę kilku nurtów teoretycznych i został przepracowany w toku szeregu zrealizowanych w Polsce projektów badawczych.
The article, which opens the thematic section on the sociology of intimate couples, offers a theoretical and research program for the studies of intimate life. Its core is the conceptualization of intimate relations as different forms of closeness, love and care embedded in everyday practices. An intimate couple is presented in a relational, not normative, intersectional and processual approach. The article consists of two parts. The first explains why the category of intimate couple is useful in partially replacing and partially complementing such categories as family, individual, and household. The second part focuses on benefits the theory of social practice brings to the research on intimate couples, with the emphasis on silent and habitual knowledge, carnality and emotionality, materiality, symbolism and the context of practices. The presented theoretical and research program that synthesizes the trends from several sociological areas, both practical and theoretical, has been elaborated on the basis of a number of research projects undertaken in Poland.

Pośród wielu zmian społeczno-kulturowych, do których prowadzą procesy cyfryzacji, warto zwrócić uwagę na nowe formy dzielenia się zapośredniczone lub zorganizowane wokół mediów społecznościowych. Od praktyki regulowanej złożonym systemem wzajemnych zobowiązań oraz oczekiwań (moralność grupowa), dzielenie się dryfuje w kierunku aktywności stymulowanej algorytmicznie, której istotą nie jest przetrwanie, ale uzależnienie, sprzedaż lub chęć pokazania się. Mimo technologicznie stymulowanych przemian dzielenie się pozostaje jedną z najważniejszych (kotwiczących) praktyk uspołeczniających, zapewniających trwanie społeczeństwom po-nowoczesnym. W odróżnieniu od epoki przedinternetowej, proces włączania jednostek do szerszych całości społecznych poprzez dzielenie się zorganizowany jest jednak wokół nowych wzorców, nowych podzielanych znaczeń, alternatywnych sposobów rozumienia i objaśniania świata. W dynamicznie zmieniającym się układzie powiązań społecznych, media społecznościowe stały się ważnym źródłem sensów, trwałym punktem odniesienia, który pozwala wielu użytkownikom uzyskać czasowe choćby panowanie nad płynną rzeczywistością. Stabilność będącą efektem przebywania jednostek w mniej lub bardziej trwałych układach współzależności coraz częściej zapewnia praktyka dzielenia się, bez której media społecznościowe nie mogłyby istnieć.
Among the many socio-cultural changes that digitisation processes are leading to, the new forms of sharing mediated through or organised around social media deserve attention. From a practice governed by a complex system of mutual obligations and expectations (group morality), sharing is drifting towards an algorithmically stimulated activity, the essence of which is not survival but addiction, selling, or the desire to show off. Despite the transformations stimulated by technology, sharing remains one of the most important (anchoring) socialising practices ensuring the survival of post-modern societies. Unlike in the pre-internet era, however, the process of integrating individuals into broader social wholes through sharing is organised around new patterns, new shared meanings, and alternative ways of understanding and explaining the world. In a dynamically changing setup of social connections, social media have become an important source of meaning, a permanent point of reference that allows many users to gain at least temporary control over a fluid reality. The stability resulting from individuals being in more or less permanent systems of interdependence is increasingly provided by the practice of sharing, without which social media could not exist.

The author presents the physicians profile, as written by Ar- Razii, who must know both the practical skills as well as having a wide theoretical knowledge. This article shows Arab medicine within its historical context. For discussion of the issue selected examples are derived from Qusta ibn Luqa treatises.

Climate change and other sustainability problems represent unprecedented challenges to humanity today. Because of such challenges there is a need for fundamental social changes of current unsustainable society. There is essential advanced interdisciplinary scientific contribution for informing policy interventions. However, so far the state of development of this agenda is definitely insufficient. Scientific and policy discourse concerning climate change and sustainability is dominated by natural sciences, technical, and economic perspectives, while many crucial social sciences, especially sociology, anthropology, and ethnography are marginalized. Unfortunately, development of sustainability science and behavioural insights (behaviorally informed interventions, BIP) do not compensate this cognitive gap which could result in considerable ineffectiveness of current climate change and sustainability policy. From the observation that inconsiderate deepening of integration of various perspectives could lead to dramatic reduction in their explanatory power author moves to potential ways to diminish such threats and simultaneously successfully combining perspectives from different disciplines. Thereby, he proposes Multidisciplinary Insights Approach as a platform for practical collaboration between scientists from different disciplines and as a theoretical approach for developing more balanced and heterogeneous multidisciplinary agenda. The application of MIA was presented with the use of social practice theory, COM-B, and a couple other perspectives on the example of eating practice. This example showed that practice theory could be successfully used in indicating the general targets of interventions while the behavioral COM-B in detailed these interventions – all of these without excessive violations of both paradigms.
Zmiany klimatu i inne problemy zrównoważonego rozwoju reprezentują dziś bezprecedensowe wyzwania dla ludzkości. Z powodu takich wyzwań istnieję potrzeba fundamentalnych zmian współczesnego, niezrównoważonego społeczeństwa. Niezbędny jest zaawansowany, interdyscyplinarny wkład naukowy w celu wsparcia polityk publicznych w tym zakresie. Jednakże, jak dotychczas, stan rozwoju tej naukowej agendy jest zdecydowanie niewystarczający. Naukowy i polityczny dyskurs dotyczący zmian klimatu i zrównoważonego rozwoju jest zdominowany przez nauki przyrodnicze, techniczne i perspektywy ekonomiczne, a jednocześnie wiele kluczowych nauk społecznych, w szczególności socjologii, antropologii i etnografii jest marginalizowanych. Niestety, rozwój nurtu zrównoważonej nauki i podejścia behawioralnego (behawioralnych interwencji publicznych, BIP) nie rekompensuje tej luki poznawczej, której rezultatem może być znaczna nieskuteczność współczesnej polityki klimatycznej i zrównoważonego rozwoju. Z powodu obserwacji, że bezrefleksyjne pogłębianie integracji różnych perspektyw może prowadzić do dramatycznej redukcji ich mocy wyjaśniającej staram się podążyć w kierunki zmniejszenia takich zagrożeń, a jednocześnie z sukcesem wspólnie wykorzystać perspektywy z różnych dyscyplin. Tym samym, proponuję Podejście Multidyscyplinarnego Wglądu jako platformę dla współpracy naukowców reprezentujących różne dyscypliny i podejścia teoretyczne, tak aby rozwinąć bardziej zbalansowaną i zróżnicowaną naukową agendę. Zastosowanie MIA zostało zaprezentowane przy wykorzystaniu teorii praktyk społecznych, COM-B i paru innych perspektyw na przykładzie praktyki jedzenia. Przykład ten pokazał, że teoria praktyk może być z sukcesem wykorzystana do wyznaczania ogólnych celów interwencji podczas gdy behawioralne COM-B do ich uszczegóławiania tych interwencji – wszystko to bez nadmiernego naruszania założeń obu paradygmatów.

The article deals with teaching and researching stage speech on the supposition that researching stage speech influences how we teach stage speech. Stage speech is an artistic speech that researchers try to study and explain in a scientific manner, i.e. with scientific terminology and methods. Modern studies of stage speech are interdisciplinary (they combine phonetics and theatre studies, literary theory and history, sociology, etc.) and no longer just studies on a stricly linguistic (phonetic) level. The article shows a model of a scientific and interdisciplinary study of stage speech and its influence on or connection to how it is taught. The teaching of stage speech, which is shown on the example of students of Stage Acting at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television, balances between science and art as well as between theory and practice. The article demonstrates that researching stage speech influences the teaching that is also interdisciplinary, based on artistic and scientific concepts and constantly combines theory and practice.

Investigations into the nature of the activity of gaming have been made difficult by virtue of the plurality of possible forms this activity may take. In this paper, I address this problem by examining (digital) gaming under the heading of practice theory, in an attempt to shed more light on the practical aspects of ludic literacy. Building on the theoretical and conceptual frameworks of Pierre Bourdieu, I present a general model of digital gaming as a form of situated human practice, followed by details of a case study, conducted in order to test and adjust the initial version of the model. Though further research with a greater population of players is needed in order to expand the scope of the model, the findings of the study lend credence to its validity as a conceptual framework for delineating and framing different practices generated by digital game artefacts.
Badania nad naturą grania są utrudnione przez różnorodność możliwych form, jakie może przybierać ta działalność. W artykule tym podejmuję ten problem, analizując gry (cyfrowe) pod szyldem teorii praktyki i próbuję rzucić więcej światła na praktyczne aspekty kompetencji ludycznych. Opierając się na założeniach teoretycznych i koncepcyjnych Pierre’a Bourdieu, przedstawiam ogólny model gier cyfrowych jako formy usytuowanej praktyki człowieka, a następnie prezentuję studium przypadku, zaprojektowane w celu przetestowania i skorygowania wstępnej wersji modelu. Choć poszerzenie zakresu stosowalności modelu wymaga badań na większej populacji graczy, wyniki naszego badania potwierdzają poprawność naszego modelu rozumianego jako teoria wyznaczania i osadzania praktyk wyrosłych z artefaktów ludycznych.

Living in a world of contstant changes makes adult education theory and practice more and more challenging. The author considers change as category and explains why it is essential to perceive change in this way in adult education. She discusses change in individual and social aspect, change in J. Mezirow’s theory, and changes in Polish andragogy over last few years. Then she points to change understanding in adult education policy, underlining non-official basis of changes made in adult education. Finally, she enumerates tasks for andragogues to make change more effective in adults’ life and education.

Współczesny dyskurs polityczny i naukowy nad polityką klimatyczną jest w dużej mierze zdominowany przez nauki przyrodnicze, techniczne oraz ekonomię neoklasyczną, a w mniejszej mierze psychologiczne podejście behawioralne. Prowadzi to do znaczącej luki poznawczej, którą starają się wypełnić podejścia bardziej socjologiczne, jak m.in. teoria praktyk społecznych i perspektywa wielopoziomowa. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiam podstawowe założenia teorii praktyk społecznych, perspektywy wielopoziomowej i podejścia behawioralnego, jak również proponuję sposób na jednoczesne wykorzystanie tych perspektyw w badaniach nad polityką klimatyczną. Przedstawiam także szereg przykładów badań empirycznych przeprowadzonych w ramach tych podejść badawczych oraz wskazuję na potencjalne kierunki przyszłych badań.
Contemporary political and scientific discourse on climate policy is greatly dominated by the natura sciences, technical sciences and neoclassic economics, and to a lesser degree by psychological behavioural insights. It leads to a significant cognitive gap which more sociological approaches try to fill, e.g., practice theory and the multi-level perspective. In this article, I present the basic assumptions of practice theory, the multi-level perspective and behavioural insights, as well as a way to use these perspectives in parallel in research on climate policy. Moreover, I propose a number of examples of empirical studies from these approaches and indicate potential directions for future research.

Metamimesis, etymologically, is a combination of the Greek prefi x “meta” and mimeisthai, which was in use prior to the emergence of the Platonic tradition (Koller 1954). In the following work I argue that the methodological and technical aspect of classical category, mimesis, has been changing during the development of art and human thinking throughout the cultural history and philosophy.2 This work discusses hypotheses concerning functional and interdisciplinary, and potentiality of meaning of the category of metamimesis, especially: contemplative meaning (as the classical-philosophical) and – the original – performative meaning (according to A. Artaud: as a non-discursive and non-mendacious reality). The main part of the paper applies the category of metamimesis to interpret selected artistic practices, in particular the artistic performance of Iron Ship and Xavier le Roy’s Low pieces. Thus, it discloses the vast potentiality of the act of performance as a process involving contemplative and performative dimensions of human being – all participants of this process. The discussion concerns also the question about the limits of human thinking and ultimately the possible existence of a transcendental awareness. The article is an introduction to the study of potentiality of the category “metamimesis”.
Termin metamimesis jest złożeniem greckiego prefi ksu „meta” oraz „mimeisthai”, używanego jeszcze przed Platonem (Koller 1954). W prezentowanym artykule twierdzę, że aspekty metodologiczny i techniczny klasycznej kategorii mimesis zmieniały się wraz z rozwojem sztuki i ludzkiej myśli. W artykule rozważam potencjalność znaczenia kategorii metamimesis, szczególnie w kontekście fi lozofi i klasycznej jako pojęcie kontemplacji, a także – źródłowo – w kontekście znaczeń performatywnych (według A. Artauda, jako niedyskursywne i niezakłamane praktyki). Główna część tekstu poświęcona jest zastosowaniu „metamimesis” do interpretacji praktyk artystycznych, na przykładzie performansów Iron Ship oraz Low pieces (stąd sugeruję także użyteczność tytułowego pojęcia dla umotywowania kształtu młodej dyscypliny „Performance Philosophy”). Finalnie wnioskuję, iż działanie performatywne jest procesem rozwijającym wymiary bycia, takie jak kontemplatywny i performatywny, wszystkich uczestników tego typu praktyk. „Metamimesis” jest też, jak się okaże, kategorią skupiającą (jak w soczewce) pytania dotyczące granic ludzkiego myślenia, a pociąga za sobą pytania o możliwość istnienia świadomości transcendentnej. Artykuł ma charakter wprowadzenia do badań nad potencjalnością tytułowej kategorii.

The article is an attempt to reflect on the current tasks faced by clinical psychology as a field of science and practice. These tasks stem from the constant need to improve the scientific level of this discipline and to solve problems connected with intensive social changes. We have considered the issues of globalization and the challenges it implies for clinical psychology, presenting selected theories of globalization and the patterns of reaction to these changes. We see evidence-based practice in psychology as a reflection of these transformations in science and clinical practice. In the article, we discuss the positive influence of this approach on the improvement of assessment practice standards and psychotherapy effectiveness, drawing attention to some negative consequences of universalization, particularly those that threaten human agency. Addressing and responding to these challenges requires close cooperation of researchers and practitioners, which was called for at the 1st National Clinical Psychology Conference in 2014.
