Opis:
The following article is devoted to vexillological research and conservation aspects of the 20th-century veterans’ banner of the Insurgents and Warriors Society (TPiW) from Zdziechowa against the background of the regional tradition of the Wielkopolska Uprising. The work has three objectives. The first is the verification of archival materials, placed in the historical context of the battle of Zdziechowa and the development of the Insurgents and Warriors Society (the history of its establishment, the assumptions adopted and the figures of veterans). The second – identification of the kind and type of banner, its construction, and the technique and technology of its manufacture, together with the determination of the state of its preservation and the indication of the causes of the damage it has received. In addition, an attempt was made to determine the provenance of the banner, its dating, and to identify the manufacturing plant (workshop) in which it was made. The conducted study involved scientific consultation, research of source materials, as well as comparative analysis of analogously dated objects. The obtained results of the formal and content analysis and their interpretation constitute the content of this article.

Opis:
Modern Movement buildings, despite their relatively recent construction, are sometimes affected by radical transformations of layout and form. The railway stations being one of the most important public buildings in the city are a special group of them. Due to long-term and intensive use they may bear the signs of exploitation of parts of its substance and have secondary transformations disharmony with the building. The subject of the article are architectural and conservation studies of the Suburban Railway Station in Gdynia, built in the mid-1950s. The authors of the article set themselves the goal of presenting the research procedures developed for it in the years 2016–2022, which are an introduction to revaluation process. The research methods used during the field work made it possible to identify the originally used techniques of execution and finishing methods and to determine the procedures for their reconstruction using conservation methods. The results of the conducted research became the basis for determining the scope of conservation protection of the station building, as well as the possibility of interfering with its partly “functionless” substance through adaptation and modernization activities.
Budynki modernistyczne pomimo względnie nieodległego czasu powstania bywają dotknięte radykalnymi przekształceniami układu i formy.

Opis:
The tumultuous history of World War II along with its political outcomes have not only lead to moving borders of the Republic of Poland, but also to losing a considerable part of its territory. The lands which were the source and the breeding ground for multicultural tangible and intangible values remained beyond the eastern border. While direct military activities did not lead to the destruction of many temples, the period of fratricidal combat, particularly in Volhynia, fuelled chiefly with hatred and anger, caused vast destruction. Another period was the rule of the Soviet authorities, whose main goals included fighting religion, as well as its entire tangible heritage. The forms and the intensity of fighting varied: temples were being closed, blown up or transformed into factories, power stations, prisons, bakeries, warehouses (usually for artificial fertilizers, oftentimes stored loose), mills, stables, department stores, gymnasiums, offices, apartments, concert halls, or museums of atheism and religion; this was connected with the removal of crosses, towers and domes. Frequently, reconstructions were so extensive that today it is very difficult to recognise that they were once sacred buildings. The furnishing of temples, which often was at the highest artistic level in the world, suffered the cruellest fate. Usually, it was barbarically removed and burnt. Immense geopolitical changes in East-Central Europe in the early 1990’s brought independence to many countries, which undertook a number of regulations enabling the return of temples to their rightful owners. This process, very vigorous in the first period, has almost ceased in recent years. Restoring fairly original appearance to the recovered temples required a huge sacrifice, and oftentimes heroism. First of all, protective, repair, and construction works had to be conducted, in many instances without adequate knowledge. The restoration of the sacred interior designs of the temples was done on a random basis. While the way of proceeding with the restorations was somewhat justified at the time, the activities in recent years, including among others, the inappropriate reconstruction of furnishing, have resulted in a loss of the last remaining values. They have been replaced with mediocrity and tackiness. Professional restoration works have been carried out only in few cases. The reasons for this are varied, on the one hand, among others, the lack of funds, the lack of adequate identification and the preparation of objects in such a vast territory, and on the other hand, the lack of partners. Presently, works on the appropriate professional level are being conducted almost in every scope and discipline at several dozen temples. They are carried out by highly experienced specialists from Polish schools. The works which have been conducted for the last 22 years in the 17th century collegiate church in Zhovkva, Ukraine, constitute one of such exceptions. They have been carried out by students and graduates of Polish schools: the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, as well as the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń at the faculty of conservation and restoration of sculpture and architectural structure, and occasionally conservation and restoration of painting, or historic textiles. The works have been conducted in various forms: as holiday internships (month long) or MA theses (in case of the Academy in Warsaw), and the most difficult conservation issues are solved by international committees of specialists and are rendered by certified conservators and restorers of works of art based on the contract for specific task (it has only been several years that this form has contributed to a significant acceleration of the state of completing the restoration of the temple), and also as a form of volunteer work. This last form of activity (increasingly popular) requires highly qualified specialists who undertake full responsibility for the conducted works. Moreover, specific regulations exist which pertain to carrying out restoration works on historical monuments. The assistance, especially financial, of the Department of National Heritage, existing as a part of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, or the Centre of Polish Cultural Heritage Abroad at the Association “Polish Community”, as well as the Senate of the Republic of Poland and various foundations, has decidedly increased the number of works rendered on the highest professional level in the world serving the preservation of heritage of the eastern borderlands. It is, regrettably, still “a drop in the ocean”.

Opis:
The article analyses the conservation and restoration conducted from the third quarter of the nineteenth century on Wawel Hill, both within the royal residence complex and the cathedral, from the viewpoint of the then prevailing and present-day conservation doctrines. The first pioneering study of the restoration of the royal castle, prepared by Tomasz Pryliński in 1881-1882, must be highly assessed also as regards the current conservation method. On the other hand, the project of the restoration of the cathedral proposed by Sławomir Odrzywolski in 1886 still contained numerous elements of stylistic purism. In the course of its realisation it was considerably modified by a limitation of the re-Gothicisation, a preservation of the majority of the historical strata and an introduction of modern elements (Art Nouveau). The project of the restoration of the castle presented by Zygmunt Hendel in 1908 became the topic of a discussion in which diverse stands were represented by Max Dvořak, the chief conservator of historical monuments in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and Professor Stanislaw Tomkowicz, chairman of the Castle Restoration Committee. Continuing the ideas launched by Alois Riegel, Dvořak was in favour of strictly comprehended conservation, while Tomkowicz defended the idea of scientific restoration. The outcome of the discussion was a compromise favourable for Wawel Hill, entailing a resignation from controversial reconstruction proposals but not from the actual restoration of the royal residence. In 1916-1939 the restoration of the castle was continued by Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz, whose specific approach was based more on artistic creation. Today, his realisations already possess a certain historical value and deserve to be subjected to conservation protection on their own merit. Their essential novelty consisted of arranging two archaeological- -architectural reservations. Out of for four conceptions pertaining to the whole Hill (1917, 1919, 1939, 1946) Szyszko-Bohusz or his successors implemented the best elements. Fortunately for Wawel Hill, they did not realise plans for a Pantheon and an amphitheatre, which cannot be favourably judged from the viewpoint of conservation doctrine. After the Second World War conservators resigned from these plans and under the supervision of Witold Minkiewicz and Alfred Majewski initiated, i.a. work on mediaeval walls in the western and southern part of Wawel Hill. The range of the reconstruction was distinctly limited in comparison with the conceptions expounded by Szyszko-Bohusz, thus expressing the transformations of the conservation doctrine of the period. In 2008 a positive opinion about those realisations was reflected in its entry into a register of historical monuments as a “conservation document”. Modern elements of exposition arrangements introduced into the Treasury, the Armoury and the exhibition “The lost Wawel” are distinct from the authentic substance, a solution that reflects a clear-cut impact of the doctrine recorded in the Charter of Venice. Complex conservation, comprising the next stage of work conducted on Wawel Hill, had been initiated in 1990 by the present-day Director of the Royal Castle on Wawel Hill and Conservator of Historical Monuments on Wawel Hill – Professor Jan Ostrowski. The basic premises of these undertakings are contained in the Statute of the Royal Castle on Wawel Hill, which defines both the function of the Castle complex as a museum- -historical residence and the trend of conservation: “the preservation of the historical substance of monuments belonging to the Castle”. “Conservation” should, however, be comprehended as “conservation- -restoration”, since present-day activities should supplement those of the predecessors and not negate them. Such a continuation of earlier initiatives included the recreation of the surface of the arcade courtyard, the recreation of the historical crowing of Lubranka, the completion of the conservation- -restoration of the Sandomierz bastion, the architectural correction of the elevation of the Royal Kitchens (no. 5), the recreation of the royal gardens and the revalorisation of the complex of Gothic houses, i.e. building no. 7. An essential element in embarking upon conservation decisions is a valorisation of the historical strata, which includes also the results of earlier conservation. The negative opinion about the nineteenth- century introduction of barracks in the royal palace complex is maintained, but Austrian fortifications extant up to this day have been recognised as an element subjected to protection. Redesigning introduced during the Nazi occupation, fortunately not extensive, has also been negatively assessed. The principles applied in reference to the outcome of previous conservation assumed their preservation as historical values unless they collide with the fundamental purpose of the presentation of a historical royal residence, i.e. falsify its image or damage its historical substance. In such cases, corrections are advised, as exemplified by the exit from the castle to the royal gardens and a new arrangement of the reservation in the west wing of the castle.
