Opis:
The very state of contemporary linguistics presupposes not only the appearance of new aspects and objects of research, but also a return to certain previously described linguistic categories. Preposition is undoubtedly one of these categories. The necessity to re-examine preposition and its functional equivalents in accordance with new theoretical and practical methodologies and requirements gave rise to the international research project Slavonic Prepositions in Synchrony and Diachrony: Morphology and Syntax. Linguists from Russia Ukraine, Belarus, Bulgaria, Serbia and Poland currently participate in the project. This article presents the assumptions and goals of the said project as well as certain problems concerned with the very description of Slavonic prepositions, particularly from contrastive perspective.

The paper examines the contexts of using the preposition “de” regarded as a thematic one. The methodological framework here is cognitive linguistics, which means that we will try to examine a cognitive context which influence the use of the preposition “de”. The starting point of our study is the notion that the preposition “de” is a marker of thematization; however, we would like to demonstrate that thematization is not only a textual or discursive phenomenon; it also depends on the prior knowledge of the speaker. Thus, for example, Merci de m’avoir aidé/ de ton aide and J’ai décidé de partir en vacances, the information introduced by the preposition “de” is thematic in the sense that it is posed and that it is about something which is said. But in, e.g., Il se mêle des affaires d’autrui, Il parle de politique and Je te conseille de te reposer (vs. Je te conseille le repos), the use of the preposition “de” – if it remains thematic – requires a redefinition of the topic including the prior knowledge of the speaker. The preposition de therefore serves as a marker of this knowledge.

The paper aims to offer a synchronic presentation of the Polish case, which, with an exception of very few synthetic constructions, is in principle a two-element structure, consisting of two constituents – a preposition and an ending that it implies, e.g. w Gdańsk-u (‘in Gdańsk’). When we take non-prepositional languages as a basis for comparison, as e.g. Hungarian, the equivalent of a preposition here, most often of a primary one, and of an inflectional ending, is a synthetic case expressed solely by means of one agglutinative morpheme, e.g. Varsó-ban ‘in Warsaw’, Gdańsk-ban ‘in Gdańsk’.
Artykuł jest próbą synchronicznego ujęcia polskiego przypadka, który – oprócz konstrukcji syntetycznych jak possessivus czy partitivus, zresztą nielicznych – jest zasadniczo strukturą dwuelementową, składającą się z dwu konstytutywnych elementów, tj. przyimka oraz implikowanej przezeń końcówki, np. w Gdańsk-u. Jeśli przyjąć za podstawę porównania języki bezprzyimkowe, jak np. węgierski czy estoński, odpowiednikiem owej struktury, tj. przyimka, najczęściej pierwotnego i końcówki fleksyjnej, jest syntetyczny przypadek wyrażany wyłącznie za pomocą jednego morfemu aglutynacyjnego, por. węg. Varsó-ban ‘w Warszawie’, est. Varsovi-s ‘w Warszawie’.

The article deals with the history of competition and standardization between the variants од‑/ від‑ (both as preposition and prefix) in the Ukrainian language. Historically they are related to different groups of dialects. In the southwestern dialectal zone, with the exception of the northern dialects of the Volyn and Carpathian areas, the variant від‑ prevails, while the variant од‑ is predominant in the north of the country. The variant од‑ was typical for standard Ukrainian of the 19th‑early 20th century. After a period of competition with від‑ it lost out because of the artificial limitation of its use. This happened in the early 20th century due to the desire to employ forms that would give the literary language a national character, since the від‑ variant is notably different from both Polish and Russian. The history of од‑/ від‑ competition is investigated on the material of dictionaries, 1920s’ grammars and modern linguistic research. The history of од‑/ від‑ preposition and prefix variants was researched as well within the Ukrainian language corpus, which includes texts from the 19th to the 21st centuries. Shown are the points of variation related to regional and chronological properties, to authors’ individual preferences and to certain lexemes.

The analysis shows that while behind and beneath are still frequently used as adverbs in the whole Middle English period, between and betwixt are predominantly used as prepositions already in Early Middle English. This clearly demonstrates that the degree of grammaticalisation of the latter two Middle English words was much higher than that of behind and beneath.

French lexicographical equivalents of the preposition spod The paper analyses the lexicographical entries devoted to the Polish preposition spod (‘from under’) found in twenty five Polish-French general dictionaries of different sizes published in the 20th and at the beginning of the 21st centuries. A general conclusion from this comparative analyses is that, due to both inappropriate construction of these entries and significant gaps in the inventory of equivalents and in their exemplification, none of the consulted dictionaries makes it possible for Polish native speakers to select the correct French equivalent(s) of the preposition spod in a given type of context.

The presented paper takes up a debate with the existing (mainly dictionary) descriptions of expressions assuming the form w miarę and na miarę. It shows that, although the intuition of the authors of the descriptions is often right, the descriptions themselves are not suffi ciently precise. What is pointed to as a potential source of the misunderstandings is the multitude of the types of usage of the base noun miara. Based on a description of syntactic requirements, connectivity (including frequent collocations), and meanings, three units assuming the form w miarę (a gradation operator and two prepositions) and two units assuming the form na miarę (a preposition and an attributive expression) are distinguished. At the same time, it is noticed that the attributive (adverbial and adjectival) usages are the least established in terms of syntax and the most controversial ones.

New prepositional analytic constructions in contemporary PolishThis paper presents pairs of structures in which one structure is a correct synthetic phrase and the other is a corresponding analytic structure that is incorrect according to contemporary dictionaries. The latter are nevertheless used because speakers notice subtle differences between the synthetic and analytic forms. As a result, one structure cannot be replaced with the other in all contexts. The process of replacing synthetic structures with analytic ones is evidence of the intensifying tendency towards analyzation in Polish. This process has been observed in all periods of the history of the Polish language. Nowe przyimkowe konstrukcje analityczne we współczesnej polszczyźnieTematem artykułu są pary konstrukcji, z których pierwsza jest syntetyczna, druga – analityczna. Wszystkie opisywane formy analityczne są niezgodne z normą, a mimo to wielu użytkowników wybiera je zamiast połączeń syntetycznych. Funkcjonowanie w języku dwóch niemal identycznych struktur syntetycznej i analitycznej może być spowodowane subtelną różnicą znaczeniową między nimi. Proces ten jest dowodem działania tendencji analitycznej w polszczyźnie, obserwowanej we wszystkich okresach rozwoju języka polskiego.

The research presented in this paper is aimed to answer the question whether dyslexic people who had been diagnosed with delayed speech development before they started school use prepositions correctly in statements and how their ability to use prepositional phrases affects their formation of sentence structures. The material underlying the research on the syntactic functions of prepositions and prepositional phrases has been extracted from reports on speech development for six-year-old children and stories created by the same people many years later, when they were eighth-year students. Analyses of dyslexic students’ essays have confi rmed that one of the key indicators of developmental dyslexia, which is helpful in diagnosis, could be the preposition acquisition time as well as understanding and using this part of speech in utterances and statements.

The paper discusses prepositional constructions used in contemporary acts of law. The analysis covers the primary (traditional) prepositions as well as the secondary ones. When taking their nominal complement, the latter category shows the realization of two kinds of nominalization process: of the complete (proper) nominalization, which has its overt exponent in the form of an action noun; and of the reduced nominalization, in which formal constrains prevent the overt realization of an action noun. The author discusses the grammatical non-personal functions related to the traditional and the secondary prepositions. The analysis does not cover spatial and temporal meanings of the prepositions. The author wants to establish to what extent the particular grammatical functions in legal acts are realized by the traditional prepositions, and to what extent by the secondary ones. She also explains how the particular functions and legal meanings can be influenced by the particular nominalization processes.

This article is devoted to the uses of different Italian prepositions in expressions describing the same fragment of reality, as exemplified by: una ragazza dai capelli rossi and con una ragazza (i) capelli rossi, both referring to a red-haired girl. Situating the research in the field of Cognitive Grammar by R. Langacker (the relation between a trajector and a landmark) and based on the conception of pre-cognitive schema, the following hypotheses were verified: 1. preposition, as a relational category, reconstructs in a sentence the relation between the trajector and the landmark; 2. preposition, as a localistic category, illustrates the spatial and/or temporal mutual distribution of the trajector and the landmark; 3. the ordering of the trajector and the landmark does not necessarily reflect the order of perceived elements: the element expressed after a preposition can be a starting point to the perception of a scene; 4. differences in the choice of prepositions express different ways to conceptualize the same fragment of reality; 5. prototypical uses of prepositions refer to relational schemas and localistic pre-conceptual schema; 6.there exist asemantic uses of prepositions, as indicated by language users’ preferences; 7. each preposition has its own semantic invariant.

Prepositions are highly polysemous items i.e. they are used in various semantic and syntactic contexts. In the theory elaborated by Johnson (1987) and Lakoff (1987), image schemas have been applied to the analysis of the meaning of prepositional phrases. These structured wholes allow for the interpretation of the prepositional phrases both in spatial contexts (locational and directional) and in their metaphorical extensions. The analysis of the preposition in in Italian in spatial contexts leads to the conclusion that the unit in is a linguistic tool that engenders the container schema in whatever spatial context (static or dynamic) it appears. In dynamic contexts the container schema structures only the final location of the trajector which is located in the inner part of the landmark. Directional movement is structured with a path schema built up into the verb stem. The in phrases out of the context (without a static or dynamic predicate) can receive both in or into interpretation. There is only a partial overlap between the uses of the preposition in in Italian and in Polish, which is due to different categorisations of spatial relations in both languages. The Polish equivalents of in phrases in Italian are the following: w+loc, w+acc, na+loc, na+acc i do+gen. They involve different image schemas including the container schema. The first structure w+loc is modelled by the container schema, the second in+acc by the path and container schema, the third na+loc by the support and contiguity schema, the fourth na+acc by the path and support and contiguity schema and the fifth do+gen by the endpoint schema. These correspondences may result useful in the teaching/learning process of prepositional units.
