he research article discusses the concept of “the trans-avant-garde” (a term coined by theItalian art critic Achille Bonito Oliva to describe certain phenomena in visual arts, espe- cially painting, which have appeared since the end of the 1970s) and attempts to adapt it for a discussion of twentieth century Polish music. The trans-avant-garde (Italian la transavanguardia) is an Italian form of expressionism in art (neo-expressionism), origi- nating as a rejection of modernism, formalism, innovation, originality, and stylistic coher- ence, which began to treat tradition in a new way, extensively referring to 16th century mannerisms, ambiguity, stylistic pluralism and polysemy.While, on the one hand, trans-avant-garde artists are fully aware of the crisis of the avant- garde experiment, on the other, they aim to create content-packed works of deeply expres- sive and romantic character. The trans-avant-garde is widely considered to be an early stage of postmodernism, or simply its synonym. There is a difference, though, between the trans-avant-garde and the postmodern. Oliva speaks of a journey from America to Eu- rope and back. My article discusses these differences, systematizes the most important stylistic aspects and aesthetic ideas, and applies these observations to the study of music-a discipline Oliva did not take into consideration.A key issue in the description of the trans-avant-garde in Polish music is analysis of the trends that precede it, are synchronous with it, and follow it in history. It is also important to trace borrowings and differences along this time axis. In order to offer an insight of thiskind, I first present the different concepts of “modernity” and “postmodernity” that haveappeared in music (and art) of the twentieth century, and I then juxtapose those with the Italian original idea of la transavanguardia.

With the support of recent scholarship the author proposes an understanding of the Aristotelian Corpus inspired by the biological works. He points out that this understanding is bound up with other current philosophical discussions, especially on biology, rationality, realism, the knowledge of an individual, metaphor, and poetics. The author concludes that Aristotle offers the most promising ontological, epistemological and anthropological basis not only for undertaking a series of urgent reconciliations (of facts and values, of theoretical and practical reason, of understanding and sensation, and of intelligence and emotion), but also for solving many dualisms of modern times, in their Platonic or materialist varieties.

It used to be that if some message came from an oral source, its weight depended on reliability of the one who had transmitted it and on the one who had heard it. If, on the other hand, something was printed it intrinsically became credible. Democratization of access to print and similar democratization of media, apart from its undoubtedly positive side, brings also a negative novum – it encourages everyone to speak freely. It is impossible to talk about truth in media, or truth in any other sense, and not relate to the fashionable nowadays in the humanities the vanquisher of Marxism – called postmodernism. This very movement in its popular form sows the seeds of fear of all who proclaim the existence of objective truth or, what is worse, absolute truth. They caution that the supporters of this truth will introduce it by force, so we are in danger of facing totalitarianism, fundamentalism and dark dictatorship. It is uncertainty that drives people to violence. Those who have something to hold on to are more unaffected by despair. The fanatics are often recruited from those who are adrift. Less often from those with a questing mind. But in order to seek one needs to believe that truth exists. Even if it were always incomplete and imperfect in the form in which we are able to assimilate it. To the charges that every certainty leads to violence, I reply that most frequently it is the opposite. It is fear and feeling adrift that drive people to the false certainty. Whoever believes that truth exists will easier accept that he will never grasp it. In the very important debate that was conducted some years ago, the fear of fundamentalism was juxtaposed with the fear of nihilism. I see the latter as a greater threat.

The European reaction of the leading architects towards the period of international style, "The idea of style has yet again become up-to-date. The modern style, covering the whole world, is uniform and coherent..." [4], promoted at the exhibition "Modernist architecture" organized in Museum of Art in New York by architects Henry Russell Hitchcock and Philips Johnson, was immediate. The leading European architects: a) Walter Gropius wrote: "The aim of Bauhaus was not to promote one particular style..." [4], b) Le Corbusier formulated "Fundamental principles of aesthetics" [4], c) Bruno Taut wrote: "Five assumptions of new architecture" [4]. The message that "The form follows the function" became the very principle of modernism. The year 1972, when the blocks of flats in St. Louis, US were blown up, and the year of the actual end of the ideology originating from CIAM, is the agreed time marked as the end of modernism. It was a few years after Le Corbusier's death (1965) - the death of the unchallenged spiritual ideologist of modernism.

The purpose of this article is to examine the influence of surrealistic painting on contemporary advertising, taking into consideration the differences in use of surrealistic references on three levels of literalness: advertisement citing specific, surrealistic images, advertisement made of mosaic of various borrowings from surrealistic painting, finally advertisement created in a surrealistic manner, considered as a type of post-surrealistic masterpiece. To begin with theoretical issues connected with postmodern culture of image, the phenomena of contemporary advertisement and its intertextual relations with art, author tries to find answers on following questions: Why surrealism became so attractive material for advertisement? Is it possible, to acknowledge advertisement profiting from surrealistic painting, as an example of postmodern statement? Is it valid, basing on its example, to treat about the type of transgression in contemporary advertisement? The conclusions of this analysis include: purpose and function of use of surrealism in advertisement, the role of visual layer, disappearance of persuasive function to the benefit of strengthening the esthetic function and inscribing advertisement into postmodern paradigm of culture.

There is no doubt that Lyotard’s the most famous achievement is his conception of metanarrative. This concept undermines the credibility of traditional philosophy along with its claim for conceptual clarity, thanks to which we would be able to speak about the world as it “really” appears. Lyotard has pointed out that since the Enlightenment we have lived in an illusion believing in future possibility of coming to fruition of the narrative of the dialectics of Spirit, the emancipation of reason, social progress, etc. While rejecting metanarratives and proposing a limitation to micro-narration instead, Lyotard has established the theoretical foundations of a pluralistic society, seeking solutions of its own problems not by consensus, but by permanent endless disputes. He has presented, in essence, a new image of society as a multiplicity of various subsystems and discourses, none of which can claim to be superior to others. Despite sometimes harsh criticism, there will be only a slight exaggeration in the statement that his concepts have influenced not only the philosophy of the last decades of the 20th century, but indirectly also social reality, since the concept of the pluralistic society is derived directly from the philosophy of modernism. Even if we find that complaints made against Lyotard to be legitimate, we cannot deny that society functioning as Lyotard has desired, would be the society free from the threat of the rebirth of totalitarianism.

The present reflections will be devoted to the philosophies of Jacques Derrida and Jean- François Lyotard. We will attempt here to identify differences and similarities both between these two thinkers, and among the philosophical movements which their deliberations have given rise to. In the beginning, it is obviously necessary to make some terminology standardization, because such terms as “deconstructionism,” “post-structuralism” or “postmodernism” are sometimes used in various meanings, and are often the matter at issue. As a consequence of ambiguity of all these concepts, is the fact that individual authors are included either in post-structuralism or postmodernism, even when they have dissented themselves from belonging precisely to those philosophical currents.

The purpose of deconstruction is not an understanding of the content of the text in the ordinary sense of the word, but to get to the bottom of everything that the text does not speak about explicitly, and thanks to it, it can lay claim to the truth. While speaking of signs which are rooted in metaphysics, Derrida, in fact, means precisely that the accepted tacit assumption that the text tells us something about the world, and that our task while reading the text is to bring out all there is in it that is directly related to real objects. That assumption can be accepted, and it may determine the way of reading the text only while going through a series of rhetorical procedures including the use of hierarchical conceptual oppositions, often possessing the evaluative character, or ignoring certain contents. Remaining outside the discourse and viewing it as a historical product, deconstruction should determine what and why has been relegated in that discourse to the margins and doomed to oblivion. The deconstructed text turns out to be another myth, moreover, the internally contradictory myth because in its innermost layer, which has just been revealed by deconstruction, denying it what it is trying to express itself.

Contemporary Russian drama is situated in a dialogue with literary and more precisely dramatic tradition. For example, this thesis clearly confirms a comedy by Igor Shpric On the bottom. The text at the level of its title refers to Maxim Gorky's play  The Lower Depths.  Shpric’s comedy parodies this work by presentingGorky's characters in the social and cultural context of contemporary reality. There have been outlined serious discrepancies between philosophies of Derrida and Lyotard on the grounds of deliberations concerning art. Lyotard questions the notion of beauty, demanding a replacement of it with a notion of the sublime, thanks to which artistic creation could also get rid of its constraints. Lyotard argues that beauty is possible thanks to the mimesis of nature, but the mimesis requires observance of the rules. Rejecting the idea of beauty, as a supreme value in art, we reject the necessity of subordinating art to rules, or, in Lyotard’s words, we sacrifice it for the freedom of practical reason.

Jacques Derrida and Jean-François Lyotard are the creators of a philosophical and cultural movement called postmodernism (Lyotard has also contributed to the popularization of the term “postmodernism”), but it should be remembered that currently the term “postmodernism” refers to the entire spectrum of various ideas, the ideas and texts from various fields, therefore, it is impossible to identify the philosophy of Derrida or the philosophy of Lyotard with the movement in philosophy or, more importantly, the humanities and social sciences, which we now call postmodernism. From today’s perspective, both Derrida and Lyotard belong to a large group of authors whose work constitutes broadly understood postmodernism, but it would be unwarranted to claim that this movement stems directly from their achievements. These philosophers have begun a new way of practicing philosophy and proposed a new point of view, but they did not create concepts that would be widely accepted by philosophers who describe themselves as postmodernists. They also did not raise any disciples or successors who would attempt to develop the concepts outlined by them, although undoubtedly some of their concepts have had a significant impact on both the development of philosophy and the humanities, and social sciences. The concept of Derrida’s deconstruction proved to be the most influential (by that, however, it is necessary to understand the general method of reading texts, but not the collection of Derrida’s views, sometimes referred to as “deconstruction”), and Lyotard’s thesis concerning the end of Grand Narratives. The detailed theses on aesthetic, social, semantic and, finally, political issues are, as it seems, known primarily to philosophy experts.

From general assumptions concerning the method of reading the text, a series of detailed implications, important both for philosophy and for social, and political reality are drawn by Derrida. One of the binary oppositions, which Derrida submits to deconstruction, is the opposition between literalism and a metaphor. Also, that opposition, according to the French thinker, after a closer examination turns out to be a myth. According to popular belief, the literal meaning of the expression takes precedence over all metaphorical use in the sense that it is the foundation upon which the metaphorical use is built. From this point of view, a metaphor is supposed to be at most an addition and an ornament, and if it is supposed to be used in philosophy, it is only in exceptional circumstances, and to facilitate the understanding of the content that the philosopher tries to explain in any way possible in a language devoid of metaphors. In accordance with the assumptions of deconstruction, Derrida reverses this order and the concept, traditionally considered subservient to its opposition, puts in the first place. First of all, he notices that a metaphor does not belong to the language of philosophy, but to the colloquial language. We could expect that in order to understand the meaning of a metaphor in a philosophical text, we should translate it into a natural language in which we will be able to discover its literal meaning. Derrida believes that the process of reaching that literality we can admittedly begin, i.e., for any philosophical metaphor we can indicate some other term that comes off as literal, however, the term, after a closer analysis, also turns out to be a metaphor for which we need to find another expression that comes off as literal, etc. The difference between a philosophical metaphor and a natural expression comes down to the superficial impression of literalness, while, as a matter of fact, the natural expressions turn out to be old, “worn-out”, as Derrida expresses, metaphors.

W artykule poruszono zagadnienie postmodernizmu ukraińskiego. Skoncentrowano się na analizie twórczości Jurija Andruchowycza. Pokazano, że ukraińska refleksja nad ponowoczesnością, jako zjawiskiem kulturowym, wiąże się ściśle z przełomem politycznym. Postmodernizm w dawnych państwach socjalistycznych przybrał inny kierunek niż na Zachodzie; nie jest tak bogaty, dobrze znany i wpływowy jak zachodni. Niemniej jednak okazuje się wysoce kreatywny, unikatowy i oferuje inny aspekt kulturowego pluralizmu. Zwraca się do rezerwuaru narodowego dziedzictwa, a szczególnie do tej jego części, która dawniej w modernizmie postrzegana była jako prowincjonalna, niekosmopolityczna, a na tyle międzynarodowa, aby potraktować ją poważnie i dostrzec walor narodowy. Regionalizm okazuje się jedną z charakterystycznych cech ponowoczesności. Nie wyklucza to jednak wartości międzynarodowych. Postmodernizm ukraiński jest próbą unowocześnienia ukraińskiej tożsamości kulturowej, umożliwiającej znalezienie w niej miejsca dla różnorodności.
The text raises the question of postmodernism. It aims to show that Ukrainian postmodernism is a specific phenomenon based on the relationship between East and West. It is something distinctive from what has been previously discussed in the literature of postmodernism. It is not as clear and unambiguous, as there is no clear foundation. It is based on complexes, insularity, twists of history, and specific political “games”. Writing this text was a journey of budding creativity in a neighbouring, but yet little discovered country. The more so with so many outstanding characters absorbing attention of their talents and an interesting world view.

The text tackles the problem of the condition of university, in a world blindly believing that the only possible worth measure is economic in nature and, in the name of this belief, setting in motion a ruthless bureaucratic machinery that throttles all kinds of creativity and nips in the bud all nonstandard actions and creations. The world apparently is “out of joint”, and things are taking an unexpected turn. University is one of the victims, but also one of active accomplices of this despicable situation. How to speak about the university to those who are exclusively in business of calculating balance of profits and losses? How to speak about it after deconstruction, when all great ideas have been already repeatedly and manifoldly dismounted and discredited? How to speak about it, when the university’s men and women have discredited themselves repeatedly as well, oscillating between libido sciendi and libido dominandi? Trying to solve this puzzle, we are following in the footsteps of Derrida, who in his texts about university makes appeal to Kant, and inspired by his invention, we set in motion two opposite traditions, represented by Lyotard, Bourdieu, Bauman and Readings on the one hand, and by Humboldt, Schleiermacher and Jaspers on the other. With Derrida, we make noises about the return of the ideas of truth, of the light of reason, of the autonomy of university. It is, however, a return of the specters of the past, in alignment with Derrida’s hauntology. Humanists are people of academia who see these specters, but at the same time are already specters themselves – even if they still show up here and there, they are almost insignificant. They are onlyallowed to contemplate their negligibility and to confess their habitual helplessness. University always had to defend itself, and it does defend itself today.

In his "Encyklopedia duszy rosyjskiej" Wiktor Jerofiejew performs a brutal vivisection of his nation’s cultural memory. The key concepts of history, power, nation, and fatherland gain a new erudite interpretation. Consistent in uncovering totalitarian discourse, Jerofiejew demythologizes opinions and prejudices, deconstructs ideas, concepts and attitudes. While bringing to life the portrait of Russian mentality and their national character, he proposes hierarchy but never accepts taboos. Consequently, "Encyklopedia" does not appeal to popular tastes. It is a multifaceted “miniature gallery”, a bitter diagnosis of the essence of Russianness and the condition of Russian culture.

The paper raises the issue of the functioning of Christian tradition in (post)modern Bulgarian literature in the perspective of the typical for the Western mass culture exploitation of biblical images in order to deal with various "totalisms". The subject is a novel by Philip Dimitrov Светлина на човеци (2003), which paraphrases the New Testament themes makes a (re)construction of the image of the first Christians’ comunity and aspires to create a message in accordance with Christian canon. The text appears to be an apology of God's creation and its freedom and, consequently, to stand up for the institution of the Church and the Christian roots of Bulgarian culture. However, as adapting heterodox motifs, in fact, it raises a question about the boundaries of Orthodoxy and the definition of strategy of evangelization. The aim of this paper is to interpret the modern term of apocrypha in the perspective of the essentially ambivalent experience of postmodernism and posttotalitarism, as a testimony of the worldview exploration of the writer (and the entire epoch).

There are many different explanations of customer centricity, and many people are in support of that concept whereas many others are against it. Different meanings can be found for customer centricity in literature. Which one could be the proper and most reliable one? Most of the views on customer centricity are based on foundational philosophical approaches and many different patterns are set as a guideline for the organizations which are willing to be customer-centric. In this paper, the aim is to look at the customer centricity phenomenon from the postmodernist point of view. The question of this study is linked to an anti-foundational philosophical approach (postmodernism) and it is shown how different the answers could be based on the philosophy approach that we choose. To collect the data, 10 in-depth interviews were done with senior business managers of customer-centric organizations in Iran. The results showed completely different answers from the postmodernist point of view.

Two of Them – the dialogue of Ignacy Karpowicz prose and Tymoteusz Karpowicz poetry This essay is about the participation of poetry Tymoteusz Karpowicz at Ignacy Karpowicz novels. The basis for writing prose is fragmented, multiplying references and styles, and above all the use of quotes and quasi citations. The article analyzed the references to the Karpowicz work occurring in three works: Gesty (2008), Balladyny i romanse (2010) and Spam (2008). This feature of the postmodern novel (Hassan) is here discussed in the perspective of the concept “rhizome” (Deleuze, Guattari). Karpowicz strips his characters with delusions of values. Both artists also connects the way contact with the customer – constantly shifting horizon of meaning results in the loss of opportunities to communicate and ultimately the possibility of incurring defeat.

The Crying of Lot 49, recognized as an important example of postmodern fiction, is a novella by an American author Thomas Pynchon. It follows the story of Oedipa Maas, who encounters a possible underground conspiracy related to postal services. Its themes and structural properties suggest affinities with a detective story genre, although there are crucial differences which actually mark the novel as a parody of the genre. In my article I want to analyze two elements which contribute to the parodic nature of The Crying of Lot 49. One is the wide use of various cultural references to the popular culture, history, American society etc.; they are usually satirized by the author as to what contributes to the overall sense of a parody. The second contributes directly to the reversed structure of a detective fiction; the use of entropy as the plot device distorts the unraveling mystery in the novel. Moreover, the reading of the novel as a parody in terms of the characteristics listed above justifies its reputation as a postmodern text.

The paper describes today’s new situation of art facing antidemocratic processes. The powerful metaphor of Parthenon of books is used, which once was the name of an installation by Marta Minujín presented just after the fall of Argentinian brutal regime in the early eighties and reinstalled again few years ago. The author points that popular “posts” of humanities (postmodernism, postsecularism etc.) need to be replaced by the philosophy of art being after some definite change. The new temporal and public condition of art being after is the result of its dramatic contemporary and future challenges.

The usual way of characterising the notion of “musical postmodernism” is set out by the following claims: (1) a postmodern musical work corresponds to the postmodern worldview; the notion in question is closely connected with the etymology of its name (“postmodern” means, in any case, “of an era after a modern one”); (3) the characterisation of the postmodern worldview (and, thus, of a postmodern piece of music) ought to conform to the beliefs of the classics of the postmodern thought; (4) the postmodern repertoire includes mainly the works created after about 1970; (5) the most important features of these compositions are euphony, aleatoric indetermination, polistylistics, and repetitiveness. The notion governed by the claims (1) – (5) is highly unclear and provides little help for understanding musical phenomena. In order to make it more precise, the basis of its definition should be modified and the three following claims accepted: (A) a postmodern musical work is a musical representation of the postmodern worldview; (B) the existing musical repertoire contains some postmodern works; (C) a correct definition of musical postmodernism should enable to qualify at least some of the given composi-tions as postmodern or not. The conditions (A ) – (C) and the analysis of the postmodern worldview seem to suggest that a postmodern musical work is such of a precariously integrated structure. A postmodern work represents the undermining (“deconstruction”) of the crucial idea of the com-posing practice: the piece of music arises from the integration of sounds, not of a simple aggregation of them. The musical “deconstruction” can emerge when some of the important portions a work or certain aspects of it exhibit larger degree of integration than the work as a whole. It seems that some compositions by Ives and the final movement of Chopin’s Sonata in B minor Op. 35 are postmodern in the sense pointed above.

The article is devoted to two works by Weronika Ratusińska-Zamuszko: the cycle Nymphs for soprano saxophone and harpsichord, and the miniature For Berenika. A miniature in the Baroque style. The introduction contains information about the composer and basic facts about the pieces in question. In the following sections of the article the author analyses: harmony (tonal arrangement and harmonic relations), form (formal models, motifs, rhythms), texture and sound as well as aesthetic aspects. Based on these elements, the key determinants of the composer's style are presented, referring to the Baroque techniques as well as those typical of the postmodern musical language, also discussing the issues of non-musical content resulting from the programme titles of the works. In the analytical part, the author presents an innovative analytical method consisting in reducing the notation of the harpsichord part to the basso continuo notation to verify the thesis that the choice of the instrument (in this case, the harpsichord) determines the style of the composition. The analytical argument leads to interesting research conclusions and is an attempt to define the composer's musical language.

The text is devoted to reflections on death in the context of philosophical thinking. In the history of philosophy, the acceptance of death penalty by Socrates remains the paradigm of this relation. In this context I undertake considerations of the problems of the impossibility of expressing the damage outlined in The Differend: Phrases in Dispute by J. F. Lyotard and the concept of parrhesia as a true speech on the border between life and death described in the most recent lectures by Michel Foucault entitled Fearless Speech, that have not been translated into Polish yet. The philosophical background of the considerations and their final conclusion concerning the problem of the phantasm of the procedure of suicide refer to the most recent lectures on death penalty by Jaques Derrida, not translated into Polish, as well.

The article is concerned with the foundations of ethics. The author takes into consideration rationalistic and universalistic conceptions of the foundations of ethics represented by Ch. Taylor and J. Habermas on the one hand, and ones based on intuition and direct moral experience on the other. In the latter current he includes the conceptions created under the influence of E. Levinas' (J. Derrida's) philosophy. At the same time he analyses the opposition between ethics established on reference to an actual, individual man and ethics based on universal rules. In his further considerations he also takes into account M. Bachtin's views as well as those of the American pragmatists: J. Dewey and G. H. Mead.

In this article, I present the position of Stefan Morawski – one of the most eminent Polish aestheticians and philosophers of art – on culture and its axiological dimension. On the other hand, I critically verify what culture’s central diagnosis is: a cultural crisis. I believe that to reach such a goal, I need to present the following central issues that make up this position: an understanding of the concept of culture and civilization; the ontology of value; an understanding of the cultural and civilizational crisis; Morawski’s typology of this crisis; and Morawski’s suggestions as to what distinctive features of culture testify to its crisis. This, I think, creates the opportunity to try to answer the question posed in the title: Where is contemporary culture heading?
W artykule niniejszym podejmuję próbę z jednej strony prezentacji stanowiska Stefana Morawskiego, jednego z najwybitniejszych polskich estetyków i filozofów sztuki, na temat kultury i jej aksjologicznego wymiaru. Z drugiej strony to co jest jej centralną diagnozą – kryzys kultury poddaję krytycznej weryfikacji. Sądzę, że dotarcie do tak określonego celu wymaga przedstawienia następujących centralnych zagadnień składających się na to stanowisko: rozumienia pojęcia kultury i cywilizacji, ontologii wartości, rozumienia kryzysu kultury i cywilizacji oraz przeprowadzonej przez Morawskiego typologii tego pojęcia, wskazania na podstawowe cechy dystynktywne, które zdaniem Morawskiego świadczą o jej kryzysie. To jak sądzę, stwarza możliwość podjęcia próby udzielenia odpowiedzi na pytanie postawione w tytule: Dokąd zmierza współczesna nam kultura?

Miłosz’s later poetry attempts to overcome the (post)modernist gap between the author as a textual effect and the subject of autobiography. An important stage on this road was his poetry book (in fact, a long poem in its own right) Nieobjęta ziemia [Unattainable Earth]. Its form is clearly dialogical. The collection mixes authorial poems with various examples of “heteroglossia”. Particularly striking is the prominent presence of Walt Whitman’s poetry. Whitmanian poetics assume that fully experiencing reality presupposes the existence of a community. The task of poetry consists in conceiving artistic structures that, when they are “concretized”, allow the reader to participate in such a community. Nieobjęta ziemia tries to come to terms with the Whitmanian challenge. The poetical subject in this somewhat modified example of the modern “sylva rerum” experiences its link with the “other” by an individual reception of artifacts that point to the communal essence of humanity. Nieobjęta ziemia , realizing community in the field of poetics “performatively”, incorporates these artifacts into the text. Particularly important seems to be the role played by poems translated by Miłosz himself (they are explicitly labeled as translations), and that represent the human condition called by Whitman “en masse”.

The article discusses the problem of myths in the current cultural circumstances, that is, in post-modernity. It indicates the crucial issue of the attitude of the postmodern man towards tradition and its transmission. Furthermore, the author undertakes an attempt to answer the following questions: can the today’s story be seen as a „song” and whether in the technical world, virtualized and marked by pluralism of everything the final “murder of this song” has been committed in a symbolic sense?
W artykule omówiony został problem funkcjonowania mitów w aktualnych okolicznościach kulturowych, czyli w ponowoczesności. Wskazano na zasadniczą kwestię stosunku ponowoczesnego człowieka do tradycji i jej przekazu. Rozważono też problematykę związaną z poszukiwaniem nowej mitologii i związaną z tym zagadnieniem koncepcję Josepha Campbella. Uwzględniono również propozycje myślenia o rzeczywistości i tradycji ujęte w teoriach Rogera Fidlera, Wolfganga Welscha i Paula Virilio. Podjęto próbę odpowiedzi na pytania: czy można dziś postrzegać opowieść jako „pieśń” i czy w świecie stechnicyzowanym, zwirtualizowanym i naznaczonym pluralizmem wszystkiego dokonało się, w sensie symbolicznym, ostateczne „zabójstwo owej pieśni”?

This paper explores two divergent concepts installed in the EU operational structure – postmodernism and modernism – in relation to the CFSP and enlargement. The research is conducted upon the content analysis method, descriptive method and comparative analysis. The main research intention is to locate the inability of the EU, to achieve internal coherence on a certain international issues, taking into account the clash between the above mentioned concepts. Consequently, this paper locates the problem of modernism as in the EU normative provisions and behavior of its Member States. At the end, it is noted that the concept of avant-garde Europe can be used as a possible solution for future development of the EU in a postmodern direction.

The article explores the polarisation within the body of twentieth century criti-cism surrounding Samuel Beckett’s work: A polarisation between strict forma-list approaches which tend to see Beckett as very much part of a modernist tradition and poststructuralist theorists who seek to categorise his work in terms of postmodernism. As an unfortunate result of extreme critical standpoints, the philosophical thinking of Schopenhauer, which had such a profound and lasting influence on both Beckett’s approach to writing as well as to the theatre, has been largely ignored or simply pushed to one side.

The author undertakes four points: (a) There was no major change in Gilson’s position on Christian philosophy as it was defined and justified in his 1931 Gifford Lectures and later developed in the sixties. (b) During the 1960s, Gilson’s Christian philosophy placed more emphasis on its Christian aspect, faith guiding reason. Earlier formulations emphasized philosophy searching within the faith for what can become rational. (c) During the 1960s Gilson emphasized faith and the Church as the guardian of Christian philosophy, expressed a relative indifference to the validity of rational proofs for the existence of God, and empathized with those accepting questionable philosophical approaches to understand the faith. (d) Gilson’s Christian philosophy fits into the framework of post-modernism.

Works of Paweł Mykietyn belong to the most characteristic trends of Polish contemporary music. His compositional attitude was individualised in the first decade of the 21st century, and today he is recognised as one of the most original Polish composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Andrzej Chłopecki, when characterizing Mykietyn’s music after the premiere of the composer’s II Symphony, compared this work to a “cleverly devised, postmodern toy”. Also Mykietyn’s next, III Symphony (2011), can be considered in the context of the categories of postmodernism and constructivism. This work manifests the postmodern attitude, but it is also marked by strict, “cleverly devised”, constructivist thinking. Its musical language contains intertextual references to hip-hop and rap music; on the other hand, it includes such typical for Mykietyn measures as “(de)gradation form”, “accelerando form”, “permanent accelerando” and dodecaphony, which can be found while analysing the work. III Symphony can be also interpreted in relation to techniques of deconstruction, including both concept and structure of the composition.

The subject of my research presented in this article, which concentrates on the issue of intertextuality, are the works of three composers who represent a trend in Polish post-modern mu-sic called surconventionalism, i.e.: Stanisław Krupowicz, Paweł Szymański, and Paweł Mykietyn. They developed certain idiomatic composing principles of shaping the structure, architectonics and style of a musical work, which allows one to talk about the poetics of their music. This poetics is based on a dialogue with tradition which manifests itself in intertextual relations. In order to properly capture the characteristics of these composers’ intertextual poetics, the author has taken into account, following Ryszard Nycz’s proposal, the three types of relations: text-text, text--architext, and text-reality. Accordingly, the following issues have been considered: (1) the problem of quotation, (2) references to genre and stylistic archetypes, and (3) cultural relations. The author has also taken into consideration the deconstruction technique which plays a sig-nificant role in the process of composition and reception of surconventional music. The issues related to the problem of intertextual poetics include not only the whole body of characterist-ics and relations of the texts (works of music), but also the ways in which they are understood by listeners who are the participants of a communicative process. Thus, on the one hand, the inter-and architextual references have been indicated, and on the other, the possibilities of recognizing these references by listeners have been discussed.

Przedmiotem zmasowanej krytyki stało się u schyłku XX wieku pojęcie rozwoju jako modernizacji i postępu, wraz z jego różnymi odmianami, m.in. europeizacją. Zarzuca mu się traktowanie rozwoju jako procesu o charakterze teleologicznym, jednolitym, linearnym, normalizującym i instrumentalnym. U podstaw takiego ujęcia leżą często idee dychotomicznego podziału przestrzeni. "Post-rozwojowa" krytyka reprezentuje różne nurty, m.in. konserwatywny antymodernizm, neoliberalny sprzeciw wobec interwencji państwa i lewicowy relatywizm kulturowy. Autor twierdzi, że źródła krytykowanych słabości tkwią przede wszystkim w nadmiernej generalizacji przedmiotowej, czasowej i geograficznej procesów rozwoju. Możliwe jest ich przezwyciężenie bez przyjmowania skrajnego stanowiska postmodernistycznego, odrzucającego wartościowanie regionalnych trajektorii rozwojowych i sprowadzającego je do równoległych narracji. Proces rozwoju może mieć w studiach regionalnych charakter otwarty, nie musi oznaczać zmierzania do określonego stanu końcowego i upodabniania do regionów uznanych za bardziej rozwinięte. Istnieją różne ścieżki rozwoju, z których wiele nie stanowi procesu linearnego ani też odgórnego projektu, istotną rolę odgrywają czynniki endogeniczne, w tym aktywność podmiotów regionalnych.
At the end of the XX-th century the concept of development as a synonym of modernization and progress has been heavily criticized. It has been said that such an approach defines the development as a teleological, uniform, linear, normalizing and instrumental process. This critique, known as post-development approach includes various ideologies, e.g. conservative anti-modernism, neo-liberal rejection of state's interventionism, and cultural relativism. The author claims that the main weaknesses of development concept are due to the unjustified generalizations with respect to the subject, time and space in which the processes are observed. Coping with those weaknesses do not necessarily require taking radical post-modernistic positions, rejecting any valuation of regional patterns of development. Regional studies may treat development as an open process, not necessarily leading to predetermined outcomes, and not always following the paths of the developed regions. There are development paths that are nonlinear processes in which the crucial role is played by the endogenous factors, such as activity of local actors.

In this essay, we shall attempt to highlight W. S. Burroughs’s concept of language being a virus from outer space as remarkably different from the pertinent views of any other Beat writer. If Kerouac saw language as an efficient medium of expressing the immediacy and unpredictability of experience, while Ginsberg used it as just as efficient instrument of voicing sociopolitical protest or Buddhist truths (following in the footsteps of Romantic transcendentalists or Whitman), Burroughs saw it rather as an enigmatic, alien force. The latter could effectively disturb human understanding and communication, or even be used as a means of mental/social political oppression and manipulation on the global scale. Consequently, this, arguably, most atypical Beat writer appears to be a forerunner of a relevant trend in American postmodern fiction, represented e. g. by Ronald Sukenick or Raymond Federman, with their implied disbelief in language as a cognitively reliable means of handling human experience or reality as such: for example, by the lavishly applied typographical experimentation.

The article is focused on the three phenomena of the crisis in the idea of the university: the fashion of postmodernism, re-evaluation of the values, link between science and the economy. The author tried to show that these processes lead to irreversible changes in thin-king about the idea of university. The changes include social processes in the long period of time. In this way we can say that these phenomena can be considered as causes of this crisis. The author does not decide whether this is the fact. But it seems to be true. Anyway, we have to be careful in consideration of the crisis in the idea of the university: here nothing is certain. The article stays open to new ideas which may explain this topic.

The author of this article analyzes the play The Siege by Evgeny Grishkovets, a renowned contemporary Russian writer. She places it against a background of the rest of his works, exposing essential features that characterize his entire dramaturgy, such as the presence of metatheatrical devices, recognition of the importance of contact with the audience, and emphasis on stage performance. The analysis also draws attention to such elements of the play as non-homogeneous spatio-temoral framework, hybrid composition of characters, and parallel development of plot threads. Special attention is paid to the “imprisoning” of characters in discourses and the ambivalent nature of cultural symbols. As the author points out, The Siege stands out in the Grishkovets’s oeuvre, both by departing from the dominant monodrama form and by juxtaposing key themes recurring in his works: the human experience of war, the reflection on the nature of time, the collapse of language referential abilities, and the impossibility of authentic communication.

Opis:
Postmodernism denies universal values and emphasizes the role of political power in constructing truth. This creates a challenge for psychotherapy, where the client’s perspective must simultaneously be respected and filtered through a given modality’s theory. The paper discusses the notions of truth and falsity in psychotherapy, presenting dialogical self theory as an approach responding to the aforementioned challenges. Comparing it to the dominant cognitive-behavioral approach, examples of its practical use, especially problems related to identity and its continuity, are described, and the benefits and limitations of the metaphor of therapeutic work as a dialogue or narration are outlined.

The paper supplements the research on the latest Paweł Mykietyn's work. It broadens the spectrum of problems related to the technique of deconstruction in his works and allows for a better understanding of the structure of the Concerto No. 2 for cello and symphony orchestra. The main research method is descriptive analysis, bringing Paweł Mykietyn's musical language closer to the harmonic material, textural systems, agogic-metric structures, and the concept of form. The analysis is based on the score of the 2nd Concerto for Cello and Symphony Orchestra, published in 2019 by the PWM Edition in Kraków. The structure of the paper includes: introduction, three paragraphs and a summary. The characteristics of Paweł Mykietyn’s work contained in the introduction will allow the reader to become familiar with stylistic tendencies at various stages of the composer's work. The section devoted to the genesis and reception aims to present the history of the creation of the analysed work, as well as its contexts and resonance. The analytical sketch in the context of the issues of time and form will allow to present selected aspects of the compositional technique.

Following Baumanian diagnosis of the contemporary art we are faced with the condition of our contemporary world. The main feature we can observe in both areas seems to be their ‘liquidity’. In this liquid context the author of the article focuses on contemporary architecture, which was omitted by Zygmunt Bauman. It appears that the most fixed, palpable and sturdy type of art also may assume a kind of liquid form – as in the case of so called ‘folding’, ‘downy’, or ‘pleated’ architecture proposed by Bernard Tschumi or Peter Eisenman who are strongly inspired by philosophical thoughts of Friedrich Nietzsche, Gilles Deleuze, or Jacques Derrida.

The aim of the article is to present tensions that occur in social, cultural, political, and technological spheres as a result of the development of postmodern societies. The changes that have been taking place in those areas involve, along with unquestionable benefits, a type of risk which, without any moral reflection, can cause a serious global crisis. The postmodern times should be understood as a continuation of the modern formation where all typical features of modernism take a more radical form. The postmodern specific style of life is characterised by uncertainty, the unpredictability of the future, as well as a decline of traditional values and morals. Moreover, the present postmodern tendencies in the area of morals can hinder the right course of development of society, economy and ecology.

Even though absurd humour and surreal scenes are at first sight the characteristic elements of Eric Chevillard’s style, it is an oversimplification to consider his novels as mere literary jokes. The appeal of this literature stems from the light and witty manner in which it transforms outdated novelistic conventions, deconstructs classic narrative strategies and refuses to fulfill the reader’s expectations. This article seeks to analyse minimal narration, an unusual mode of writing for Chevillard, in Oreille rouge: just like narrative excess, typical of his other works, it results in dematerialisation of the plot and redefinition of the novelistic structure.

Politics is on the one hand an attempt to implement certain good, a desire for achieving agreed objectives, on the other hand – as Max Weber says – a simultaneous a#empt to avoid a particular evil. If in defining the notion of politics there are references to good and evil, purpose and desire, it has to include the non-political spheres – culture, axiology, religion. Mark Lilla argues that for decades we have been aware of the great and final separation that has taken place in Western Europe between political and religious life. This awareness implies a conviction, which is obligatory today in most countries and societies, that to separate politics from religion is a great achievement. For many thinkers and politicians this is an undisputed success from which the West learns to benefit while preparing other regions of the world for such separation. Therefore it seems that modern politics should be free from religious inspiration and temptation. On the other hand, many sociologists and political scientists show the vitality of religious attitudes, proving that in its deepest essence religion is an expression of human behaviour. Each person and each community always has an element of irreducibility which is an internal defence against reducing man to “here and now”, restricting his world to what is useful and usable. We experience that in man there is a natural opening to what is transcendent. Thus, if man is ever to achieve individual and social reconciliation with himself, he will always look for rational and moral meanings. This situation creates a platform for the emergence of a completely new a#itude in society and politics – to seek and pursue spirituality in a world without religion. Increasingly, the understanding of religion reveals itself in a wide etymological sense, sociological and ethnological: religare – “to connect”, “to bind”, “to build community ties”. Religion so understood would be a great solution to the dilemma of separation – the adoption of religion (bonds) without the doctrine, while ensuring social cohesion, strengthening the feeling of being together, maintaining a spiritual connection. Many thinkers are convinced that we cannot base social life only on fear, discipline and economy; we need a deeper and stronger foundations for Community Cohesion. But is such a project possible at all? Is politics becoming a place for the formation of relationships, education and conservation of values, a narrative space which tells citizens what is good and right and what is wrong and alien? Can it replace religion in its deepest essence – in its intimate sense of an exploration and discovery of transcendence? Will it not become a caricature of religion, and a caricature of politics, and ultimately a trap for freedom?

Power is a fundamental category in the field of political and security sciences. It occupies a key position in practically every theory of international relations. Some of the categories that describe power can be defined using similar terms, although there are also those that define similar categories in a completely different manner. This is what happens when you find similar definitions for terms such as ‘power, ‘strength’, ‘authority’, or ‘influence’. Identifying the factors that make up a state’s power is no less problematic. Even if some elements of power seem to be unchanged (military or economic factors) and important for all currents of the theory of international relations, the differences in their rank may be significant and crucial for understanding the differences between particular theoretical approaches. The aim of the article is to show both the fixed elements of individual theories (primarily realistic and liberal, but also radicalism and postmodernism) as well as the differences in defining the power of their individual representatives.

Contemporary Russian drama enters into a dialogue with literary tradition and in particular with the dramatic one. The works of the classics of modernism, including Anton Chekhov, very often become actualized in recent dramatic texts. For instance, "Tanya-Tanya" by Olga Mukhina refers to the artistic features of Chekhov’s ‘major plays’ and thus, in Natalya Fateyeva’s theoretical framework and terminology, Chekhov becomes a pre-text for Mukhina’s text. The general purpose of the paper is an intertextual analysis and interpretation of the latter play.

The Moscov Conceptualism was one of the famous phenomena of non-official art. It showed emptiness of soviet paintings, literature, art. The Moscow underground was connected by the same feeling and need to change the soviet language poisoned by demagogy of politicians, by the falsity of official slogans and literature. It entered two influential styles in non-formal culture of the 1970s and 1980s. First of them was concentrated on a visual art and used term "soc-art" connected with series of paintings by Vitaly Komar and Alexander Malamid. It compared material forms of soviet ideology (posters, slogans, graphic art) with the profusion of Western commercial advertising products and pop art. The second circle of artists was concentrated near Ilya Kabakov and included not only painters but also great writers like Dmitry Prigov, Lev Rubinstein and Vladimir Sorokin, who used to deconstruct typical socrealistic literature by showing her absurd. This trend was called Moscow Conceptualism and was in many points connected with traditions of avant-garde art, especially futurism and OBERIU.

In his book, Čitanje grada (Reading the City), Krešimir Nemec stated that A.G. Matoš has „modeled after Baudelaire, introduced to the Croatian literature a figure of an idle observer, a curious pedestrian or a flâneur, a typical impressionist product of urban culture and aesthetics of the street”. As a reference and a starting point for reflection on flâneurism’s motifs in contemporary Croatian literature, A.G. Matoš is used as a factor of distinction in outlining one of the most characteristic aspects of the so-called transitional literature. Having said that, a common conclusion is that flâneurism has, in the Croatian contemporary prose, moved from thestreets to the shopping malls. However, contemporary Croatian prose offers the reading of other flâneurism practices as a movement that reflects the changes in categories of urban life, space, daily life and discourse in the transition period from the 20th to the 21st century due to the transformative processes such as a transition, globalization and media revolution. Ultimately, Nemec writes: „If he had experienced the present era of electronics and virtual reality, Matoš probably would have called the tireless surfers of the endless Internet sphere electronic flâneurs”.

Neil Gaiman’s urban fantasy novel Neverwhere revolves around some problematic aspects prevalent in the contemporary world, such as an iniquitous discrepancy between social classes or a problematic attitude to history. The artistic universes created by Gaiman are instrumental in conveying a complex condition of postmodern society. Although one of the represented worlds, London Above, is realistic and the other, London Below, is fantastic, both are suggestive of the contemporary social situation, citizens’ shared values and aspirations. Only when considered together can they reveal a comprehensive image of what the community accepts and what it rejects as no longer consistent with commonly held beliefs. The disparities in the representations of London Above and London Below refer to the division into the present and the past. The realistically portrayed metropolis is the embodiment of contemporary times. The fantastic London Below epitomises all that is ignored or rejected by London Above. The present study is going to discuss the main ideas encoded in the semiotic spaces created by Neil Gaiman, on the basis of postmodern theories. I am going to focus on how the characteristic features of postmodern fiction, such as the use of fantasy and the application of the ontological dominant, by highlighting the boundaries between London Above and London Below affect the general purport of the work.

Celem sztuki staje się dążenie do eliminacji wszystkiego, napiętnowanie wszelkiej niesprawiedliwości. Dzieła demaskują wszelkie postawy i często wykraczają poza formy, konwencje sztuki, pozostają bezradne i akceptują taką sytuację. Pojawia się przy tym stwierdzenie, że artyści podejmują przewrotną i dywersyjną grę przeciwko komercji i lansowaniu. Skutek jest dokładnie odwrotny. Powstaje zjawisko postsztuki (forma uczestniczenia w grze o dominację kolejnych kulturowych aktualności. Artefakt postsztuki to spektakl, wydarzenie, produkt), którą można zdefiniować jako to, co wypada, by było sztuką ze względu na jej aktualne uwarunkowania zewnętrzne, czyli dzisiejsze rynkowo-medialne wydarzenia. Jest to zjawisko odmienne od sztuki, kieruje się inną celowością, innymi środkami.
The purpose of art is to aim at eliminating everything, branding injustice. The art works uncover al attitudes and often cross the forms and conventions, become helpless and accept such situation. Artists are said to play a diversionary game against lancing and commercialisation. But the result is completely opposite. The phenomenon of postart appears (the form of participation in a game for domination of following cultural actualities. Postart artifact are: events, performance, products). Postart can be defined as that what must be called art because of market trends. It is a different phenomenon than art, which follows different rules and methods.

The political is a category entirely absent in the Polish theory and philosophy of law. Article presents history of “the political”, category developed by thinkers such as M. Weber, K. Marx, C. Schmitt, Ch. Mouffe and the main assumptions of the practical aims of theory of law present in alternative projects: Poznań-Szczecin methodological school and L. Morawski critical theory. Despite the declared theoretical differences, both projects are characterized by a similar understanding of the theory, which involves the objectivity of knowledge with involvement of universal point of view. Thus, the inclusion of the category of political in both projects, especially in legal education, is ignored.

Postmodernism is, in many respects, a term that has lost most of its cultural and academic cachet. This does not, however, mean that the themes, context, and conditions to which it referred are no longer relevant. In this essay, I will briefly review the latest reports which show a decreasing interest in organized religion, and interpret these results as symptomatic of a larger change in the state of knowledge. To this end, I will examine Jean‑François Lyotard’s analysis of the loss of metanarratives as a way of understanding the implicit rules of the dialogue that occurs between the theist and the atheist or agnostic. Next, I will note the unique capacity of beauty to transcend the diverse language games played by both sides of the conversation. I will conclude by contending that this characteristic of beauty offers a kind of common ground which can be built upon, fostering further dialogue as well as an opportunity for evangelization.

In 2018, the story of the unsuccessful poisoning of the Skripals by Russian special services shocked the world, and the further appearance of “Petrov” and “Boshirov” in an interview with Margarita Simonyan with completely implausible explanations led to the emergence of many memes and humorous works. The satirical play by Viktor Shenderovich To see Salisbury (2019) can be considered as one of the most significant reactions created by Russian-speaking society to the lies of the state. It is successfully performed abroad and, of course, has no chance of being staged in Russia. The author asks the question: what if everything that Petrov and Boshirov told in a scripted interview on the air of on Russia Today is true, and they are not unsuccessful spies, but a couple of gay lovers who are interested in Gothic cathedrals and the Charter of Liberties? Reflections on their own blurry unstable identity led the characters to an existential crisis in the spirit of the Theatre of the Absurd. This paper analyses how the absurdity of reality in the play serves to create a comic effect. Shenderovich grounds his satire based on direct citation of the precedent text of the interview, known a priori to every Russian-speaking recipient, on the intertexts of the Russian linguistic culture, fills the gaps of perception with paradoxes, and answers the questions asked by the audience after the RT broadcast (Why do the passport numbers differ by one digit? Why do the characters know Simonyan’s personal phone number? etc.).

The postmodern university is experiencing a legitimation crisis because of a deepening and corrosive mistrust of all forms of authority; even those that are intended to benefit students by enabling them to “think critically”, or to deepen and improve their knowledge and skills. Some of the problem is rooted in prevailing cultural and economic trends, but others inhere in the nature of postmodernism itself; especially the postmodern claim that truth itself is non-existent or simply unattainable or unavailable, even at the best of times. Unlike earlier generations of critical theorists, who believed that “the truth shall make you free”, postmodern theorists, following Nietzsche, claim that the very idea of truth is moot, if not entirely obsolete. But absent a commitment to a search for truth, the entire structure of the university itself begins to crumble.

The author discusses the performative production of identity by the reception of films, theatre and installation art space. The author emphasizes the transgressive way of participation in cyberspace. Modernist, “locating” aesthetics (Racławice Panorama, Wrocław) is shown in contrast to the aesthetics of the performative spectacle of W. Ziemilski’s Prolog (Ochota Theatre, Warsaw 2011). Reception of the Racławice Panorama and the Prolog is presented in the context of postmodern identity construction. Its ontic foundation appears to be the transmedial I arising in the course of daily interaction with culture, both in the reality and the virtual space.

The intertextuality is one of a few terms gaining dominion over a whole contemporary culture. However, as long as literary reportage is considered the traditional mimetic relation takes the first and the last place alike. The main thesis of herein paper is that after the postmodern turn the naive referential analysis of creative non-fiction cannot be the most accurate way of interpreting anymore. Intertextuality appears to be able to refresh some reading methods and make them as adequate as possible in the postmodern reality. Moreover, it is not only about a kind of scholarly designed methodology, but also about a groundbreaking subgenre: an intertextual reportage which bases on the intentionally established relations between some texts. One of the most characteristic representatives of this genre variant is Mariusz Szczygieł whose pathway leads from an ordinary reportage form early 90’s to contemporary intertextual reportages about Czech Republic. Szczygieł is aware of fact that human perception is deeply influenced by some cultural schemes determined mostly by novels, newspapers, electronic media and art. That’s why the intertextual relations in his pieces seems to be even more important than the process of referring to the actual reality. The herein paper follows Szczygieł’s way from modern to postmodern configurations of the literary reportage, reconstructs his vision of the Bohemia with its art and literature and analyses one of his most specific works in terms of intertextuality.

This article is the first attempt at the psychoanalytical interpretation of Flytrap Factory by Andrzej Bart. The author refers to such issues as Holocaust, postmodernism and culture of narcissism. Marta Tomczok compares the novel written by Bart in 2008 with the documentary Radegast by Borys Lankosz and Bart’s screenplay. In Tomczok’s interpretation judgement over Chaim Mordechai Rumkowski is not the main theme of the Bart’s novel. The researcher supposes that the main topic could be the contemporary story of the writer Andrew working on the novel entitled Flytrap Factory and screenplay of the film similar to Radegast. The author bases on the theory of narcissism of J. Lacan and the concept of postmodernist history of H. White.

Some academics claim that history education is a vital component in citizenship education, others say that its role is overestimated. In the postmodern perspective there is “the end of the past” which is, to some extend, a product of consumption society and globalization. The contemporary societies are future-oriented and the rituals, myths and the need of belonging have nearly disappeared. In this context the questions about the purposes of history education and its relation to citizenship education are posed: should history education be nation-orientated to build loyalty and commitment or should it develop skills and knowledge for better comprehension of the present? Is history education oriented towards consensus or con ict? How to talk about history in multicultural societies, without marginalizing particular groups and without imperious imposition of the only version of “the Truth”? In order to answer to these question the reconstruction of the western debate has been made.

In this paper I assess how Guy Vanderhaeghe’s early fiction criticizes the class-based and civil movements of post-1960s Saskatchewan through the recurring character of Ed. The protagonist of “Man Descending” and “Sam, Soren, and Ed” from Man Descending, the uncollected “He Scores! He Shoots!” and the novel My Present Age, Ed both condemns and epitomizes the contaminated and seductive gestures of the movements’ influences and enterprises. Vanderhaeghe deploys layers of social criticism: the first comments on the new urban progressive generation-the BMW socialists-while another manifests a counter-criticism that comments on those who challenge social progress, questioning their motives and the credibility of their critique. But what is a BMW socialist? A sociopolitical chameleon hiding behind pretense? Ed describes such a creature as a former “nay-sayer and boycotter” who “intended to dedicate his life to eternal servitude in a legal-aid clinic,” but then “affluence did him in” and now “his ass [is] cupped lovingly in the contoured leather seats of his BMW” (Man Descending 237–38). Vanderhaeghe’s early works criticize the contemporary middle class and progressivist movements of the second half of the twentieth century through this sociopolitical rogue-who in turn becomes a post-rogue. For Ed is ironically undercut by a counter-narrative that is often sub-textual, resulting in a fascinating appraisal of social ignorance, immobility, and unproductivity rather than of any specific ideology.

The article presents three strategies elaborated in the seventies of the last century by the postmodern prose, in order to tell us about the genocide. To name these strategies, the authoress makes use of the terms of blurring, patch, and “sous rapture”, which serve discussing Double or Nothing by Raymond Federman, W, or the Memory of the Childhood by Georges Perec, and Cigi de Montbazon by Anatol Ulman. The essential part in the discussion on the genocide is the reception of the above mentioned novels reconstructed among others on the base of works by Susan Rubin Suleiman along with her conception of the “1.5 generation”. The article also aims at a presentation of the interference between Cigi de Montbazon and European postmodernism exposed in Brian McHaleʼs idea of “worlds under erasure”. It is worth adding that the indicated presentation has not been yet considered.

The article Matoš and Croatian Postmodernism shows that it was Boro Pavlović (1921–2001), the anticipator and „the father” of Croatian postmodernism, the author of fifty collections of poems and numerous media creations of Walter Benjaminʼs provenance in the 50ʼs (exhibition of poems We in 1942, collection News in 1954, the project-exhibition Encyclopedia poetica in 1957/1958, and computer poem MOrpheus in 1978), who figuratively, impressively, but accurately summed up the importance of the impressionist, symbolist and Art Nouveau author A.G.M. for the overall Croatian literature.

Today we cannot say with certainty what the Swiss psychologist attitude towards postmodernism would be, therefore it is reasonable to ask: what are the similarities and differences between the Depth Psychology and the above-mentioned trend? Omitting the underlying absolutism present in the Jung`s “system” (revealing itself in the archetypal construction not only of human world but reality overall (in radically idealistic interpretation of Jung`s philosophy) reveals to us the variety of expressions, that appear to imply a totally different tendency present in his writings. Instead of strengthening unchangeable foundations of reality here we find their dissolution; instead of creating monolithic human psychology we find far-reaching relativization (theoretical and moral); instead of universalistic rules of individual development and precise ethical obligations concerning every human separately, we find vast margin of freedom and great number of equally valuable paths of personality development left to the individual. In the proposed papers I would like to show Jung not as the hypothetical enemy of postmodernism but more as a proto-postmodernist, or perhaps even as a postmodernist par excellence.

Due to globalisation social processes, once lasting for decades, proceed rapidly changing the way of thinking in individuals and whole societies, and leading to secularisation. Together with the lifestyle, the way of experiencing faith goes under modification and more and more people lose their spiritual identity living as if God did not exist. Cultural transformation of the world, especially Europe, is becoming a particular challenge for the Church to be itself in the new reality and learn how to carry out its pastoral activity in a proper way. This task is difficult but indispensable. Nowadays the Church is appointed to establish new ways of preaching the Good News to people of the 21st century and learn to understand contemporary people who frequently think according to postmodernistic spirit. This bears the need of new evangelization and renewed catechesis, which will both hold the authority of the Word of God and be close to lives of the catechized. Hence the ministry of word has to be dialogue-oriented, and directed to correlation of experience of life and faith. Only then will it be alive, interesting and capable of guiding a contemporary human to meeting with the Lord.

The poetry of Joan Brossa (1919-1998), because of its complexity and size, testifies the adventures that has lived the Western literature in the second half of the twentieth century: from the depletion of traditional avant-gardes, going through the movements of neo- or transavantgarde, up to the manifestos of the “literature of exhaustion” or postmodern. The present study aims to discuss the collection of seven volumes of poetry of Joan Brossa, written between 1969 and 1975, and published between 1983 and 1989 under the general title "Els entra-i-surts del poeta", which we consider as one of the most consistent editorial and lyrical author’s projects. We put emphasis on the issue of continuation / break up between the modernist concepts of language and the postmodern plurality, treatment of reality as text or writing, free play of imagination: all this not as a picture of disintegrated world but as positive reflection of a polymorphic reality.

Postmodern culture is largely shaped by individualization, modernization, secularization, and aestheticization. The modern individual, known as homo aestheticus, strives for a new sense of self, not based on long-standing values and meanings, but rather on evolving personal images and fluid life models present in the culture. This new approach to religiosity and spirituality is seen as a cure for the discontent felt by modern individuals who do not find fulfillment in traditional religions. It is intended to form the basis of a spirituality focused on well-being.

The concept of aesthetics is a modern one despite its Greek etymology. For this reason it may be considered as one of the basic concepts of modern times. Indeed, the modern process of rationalization would be completely incomprehensible without reference to the so called aesthetic rationality, even in the negative meaning. First of all the term “aesthetic thinking” is used with respect to postmodernism exactly because such thinking is an attempt at overcoming postmodernism. Aesthetics of the faith stems from an actual story; it is based on an actual event: on the story of Jesus that the four Gospels tell us as a testimony. Moreover, the story of Jesus, as the fundamental figure, contains the whole history of the relations between man and God, in this way becoming the universal history of mankind. It is the true theo-anthropodramatics from which every act of faith stems. Theological aesthetics is based on faith as perception of the corporal and historical figure. Moreover, this perception takes place especially as perception of historical and corporal people, who suffer without their own fault. This is why redemption takes place always, without any doubt. The most important currents in theological aesthetics in the modern cultural context are corporality (via corporis) and memory of the Passion, Death and Resurrection (memoria passionis, mortis et ressurrectionis).

The explosions in question are related to both real-life terrorist threats as well to the explosive growth of science and technology, which, in the long run, are likely to redefine fundamental social premises along the lines of trans-culturalism.

The paper aims at analyzing the importance of national identity in the selected works by Vladimir Sorokin and Viktor Pelevin. Both writers place significant emphasis on presenting the possible consequences of the present social changes. Pelevin predicts the unification of the world’s biggest countries into a homogenous structure based on people’s recognition. On the other hand, Sorokin forecasts the division of the present states into smaller structures, which will need to (re)construct their own identity. The interpretation is complemented with relevant ideas of Hegel and Fukuyama.

“Human beings have two fundamentally different ways of thinking about and engaging with the world.” Some variant of this proposition is shared by many thinkers across time. This paper focuses on the core similarities and the subtle (but significant) differences between Freud’s theory of primary and secondary processes, Karl Stern’s theory of the scientific and poetic modes of knowledge and Iain McGilchrist’s account of the differences between left and right-hemispheric competences, values and ways of “being-in-the-world”. It asks whether (or to what extent) the collective tendency to privilege one “way of knowing” over another promotes or inhibits optimal human development and cultural change and transformation.

This article analyzes intertextual references and the transformation of pan-European mythological motifs and images in J. Brězan’s dilogy novel about Krabat. It is concluded that the era of globalization as well as the German reunification make German writers search for new artistic ways of embodying traditional ontological conflicts in literary texts. This actualizes the usage of postmodern poetics’ principles, and also leads to a synthesis of juxtaposed biblical, historical, fable and mythological motifs and images within one piece of literature, a mode of writing untypical in the past.

In their attempt to reflect the increasing sense of unreality and media-saturated culture, many contemporary writers show a particular penchant for blurring the boundaries between different generic territories. However, rather than employing typically postmodern subversive practices and metanarrative games in their appropriation of popular genres, post-postmodern writers tend to treat them with more appreciation and respectability, by recognising their potential in expanding new literary possibilities and reflecting the complexities of contemporary existence. Analyzing the overlapping between the mimetic and the fantastic elements inscribed in the urban representation of New York in Chronic City, the main aim of this paper is to demonstrate that Lethem’s incorporation of the supernatural into a seemingly realistic urban fiction serves not only to foreground ontological instability of the projected world, but also as a world-building practice designed to dissolve generic boundaries so as to subvert the role of genre in the meaning-making process.

Modern Ukrainian historiography has been involved in pursuing two contradictory goals. It has been striving to cover a distance that separates it from Western historiography, at the same time trying to create what can be referred to as a canonical interpretation of the Ukrainian past. Many Ukrainian historians perceive postmodernism in terms of a new historiographical trend, failing to see the epistemological innovations that characterize a “postmodern situation”. However, some Ukrainian historians are of the opinion that postmodernism, by undermining traditional ways of practising history and questioning historiography’s contribution to the process of nation-state building, eliminates the very possibility of creating such a canonical view of the national past. The discussion of the theoretical foundations of a new synthesis of Ukrainian history has revealed the contradiction between the intention of following new scholarly trends on one hand and of writing a work that fulfils legitimizing functions on the other. However, according to this author, an attempt to present the national past from new methodological perspectives (cultural, anthropological) is likely to give it a more humanistic “face”, thus enhancing rather than weakening its legitimizing effect. Young Ukrainian historians are open to new methodological novelties and try to adopt them in their research practice (cultural and anthropological approaches). The overcoming of stereotypes and old patterns that permeate Ukrainian historiography appears to be an urgent task for Ukrainian scholars to carry out today.
W artykule podjęta została refleksja nad ewolucją metodologicznych podstaw badań historycznych w historiografii ukraińskiej po rozpadzie ZSRR oraz sprzeciwem wobec radzieckiej wersji marksistowsko-leninowskiej nauki historycznej. Naświetlono proces zaznajomienia się historyków ukraińskich z kierunkami teoretycznymi historiografii światowej, ich stosunek do relatywizacji poznania naukowego w koncepcjach przedstawicieli postmodernizmu oraz dyskusje wokół metodologicznych podstaw współczesnej syntezy historii Ukrainy.

The author identifies and discusses the most important elements of Étienne Gilson’s thought which emanate out of his articulation and defense of the Western Creed. To the question: why Gilson, why now?, the author offers a following answer: because we need to champion the Western Creed, defend philosophical realism, rightly interpret the history of philosophy, correctly comprehend Christian philosophy, and show that modernist and postmodernist systems are arbitrary. The author maintains that Gilson delivers us with the realist philosophy of the human person, shows us the undeniable advantages of philosophical realism, and formulates an original notion of Christian philosophy which appreciates that genuine philosophy is non-systematic in its nature, and that it can expose the failure of modernist philosophies that strive to be systems.

The Post-sephardic Belgrade Narrative: The Case of David AlbahariThe paper attempts to establish a literary and historical continuity between the literary works of David Albahari and the pre-WWII Sephardic cultural context of Belgrade. The war and the Holocaust interrupted the natural development of this culture. The interruption in development caused by the Holocaust did not result in an effort to build bridges to the past, but rather to redefine basic identity codes, as is evident in Albahari’s oeuvre. This indicates the appearance of a new and qualitatively different status of cultural patterns, into which events preceding the catastrophe were integrated after the fact. Postsefardski narativ Beograda – slučaj Davida Albaharija U radu ćemo nastojati da uspostavimo književni i istorijski kontinuitet između sefardskog kulturnog konteksta koji je u Beogradu postojao pre Drugog svetskog rata i književnog dela Davida Albaharija. Prirodni razvoj sefardske kulture prekinuli su rat i Holokaust. Taj prekid u posleratnom periodu, u slučaju teritorije bivše Jugoslavije, nije rezultirao naporom da se kontinuitet reuspostavi, nego je doveo do procesa redefinisanja temeljnih identitetskih postavki, što je očigledno upravo u Albaharijevom delu. Ovo ukazuje na pojavu novog i kvalitativno različitog statusa kulturnih obrazaca, u odnosu na koje su se one pojave koje su prethodile katastrofi, post festum, saobražavale. Postsefardyjska narracja Belgradu – przypadek Davida AlbahariW artykule postaramy się ustanowić literacką i historyczną ciągłość między sefardyjskim kontekstem kulturowym, który istniał w Belgradzie przed II wojną światową, a literacką twórczością Davida Albahari. Naturalny rozwój kultury sefardyjskiej został przerwany przez wojnę i Holokaust. Przerwa w okresie powojennym, w przypadku terytorium byłej Jugosławii, nie zaowocowała próbami przywrócenia ciągłości rozwoju tej kultury, lecz uruchomiła proces redefiniowania podstawowych założeń tożsamościowych, co odzwierciedla właśnie twórczość Davida Albahari. Wskazuje ona na pojawienie się nowego, jakościowo odmiennego statusu wzorców kulturowych, w odniesieniu do których post festum wyrażano zjawiska poprzedzające katastrofę.

This paper explores the issue of mock and parody religions, which is considered today as a interesting phenomenon among the new religious movements. Mock religions can be aimed at a particular religion or belief system, or they might encapsulate several selected elements of various religions. With humor as a common denominator, they have a large presence in the new media and some researchers consider them foremostly as Internet religions in contrast to more traditional and well institutionally rooted denominations. This paper reveals however the fact, that that these new religious movements can be also regarded as a reflection of the cultural condition modern societies live in and as such they might be analysed through cultural studies. In effect we can say that mock religions emphasize the personal and indivualistic approach to religion and spirituality in general.

The paper deals with the specifics of outsiders’ laughter in the book Unknown letters (Неизвестные письма/Unbekannte Briefe, Russian 2014, German 2017) by a Russian-German writer Oleg Yuryev. In particular, it analyzes how Russian cultural and historical traumas of the 20th century were reinterpreted in the book from the perspective of an ironical outsider. In doing so, it focuses on a fictional letter by the writer Leonid Dobychin, which is contextualized with fictional letters of Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz and Ivan Pryzhov, representing previous historical and cultural periods. Yuryev’s ironic reflections on the Russian historical reality and literary scene of the 20th century manifest themselves at different levels, from the positioning of outsiders’ laughter in relation to the official and marginal hierarchies of the literary canon to the postmodernist play with the traditions of literary classics. In addition, the paper addresses the inter- and/or transcultural aspect of outsiders’ laughter in Yuryev’s book.

The article discusses the problem of discursive openness in thinking about postmodern upbringing and broadly understood education. Particular attention has been drawn to considerations concerning postmodernist pedagogy and philosophy, yet with reference to the broad perspective of the postmodern reality. Furthermore, the author of the article discusses the issues related to the general discourse in the area of the aforementioned sciences and the openness appearing in them, along with the matters connected with the dialectics and the teaching of philosophy in the context of the postmodernist approach to and reflection on openness in both a scientific and socio-cultural discourse. Reference was also made to the thoughts of, among others, Tomasz Szkudlarek, Henry Giroux, Theodor Adorno, Jean-François Lyotard.
W artykule rozważony został problem dyskursywnego otwarcia w myśleniu o ponowoczesnym wychowaniu i szeroko pojętej edukacji. Zwrócono uwagę zwłaszcza na rozważania na gruncie pedagogiki postmodernistycznej i filozofii, jednak w odniesieniu do szerokiej perspektywy rzeczywistości ponowoczesnej. Poruszono również kwestie związane z powszechnym dyskursem w obszarze wspomnianych nauk i ujawniającym się w nich otwarciem, ale też łączące się z dialektyką i nauczaniem filozofii w kontekście podejścia postmodernistycznego i refleksji nad otwarciem zarówno w dyskursie naukowym, jak i społeczno-kulturowym. Odwołano się do myśli m.in.: Tomasza Szkudlarka, Henry’ego Giroux, Theodora Adorno, Jeana-Françoisa Lyotarda.

Pojęcie faktu historycznego jest jedną z podstawowych kategorii metodologicznych w badaniach historycznych. Na pierwszy rzut oka wśród historyków wydaje się być pojęciem z rzędu oczywistych, zgodnym z tzw. zdrowym rozsądkiem. W praktyce badawczej jednak obserwuje się różne rozumienie faktu – od pozytywistycznego, podkreślającego jego obiektywne istnienie, do postmodernistycznego, które temu obiektywizmowi zaprzecza. Pomiędzy tymi skrajnymi postawami mieści się wiele odcieni pośrednich, czyniąc teorię faktu historycznego jednym z głównych problemów współczesnej teorii historii.
The concept of historical fact is a fundamental methodological category in historical research. Apparently it seems to be an obvious and common sense concept among historians. In research, however, we can observe a different understanding of fact ranging from a positivist approach, emphasizing its objective existence to a postmodernist orientation that denies this objectivity. Between these two extremes there are numerous indirect nuances making the theory of historical fact one of the main problems of contemporary theory of history.

This article analyzes political values of the contemporary world and Ukraine in connection with conception of postmodernism. The article has focus on political science analysis of axiology like a determinant of the political life. Postmodern epoch has emerged after disillusionment with modernism ideals and its optimism. The person`s alienation from his/her origin, the change of industrial conditions, the senseless of revolutions, humanity`s self-destruction in world wars constituted an epoch of Postmodernism. The notion of postmodernism is described by philosophers as a new cultural tendency of Western societies. It can be characterized through the basic features such as openness and readiness for perception sociopolitical and cultural changes, freedom of self-expression, improvement of quality of life, care for ecology etc. For instance J.F. Lyotard used the concept of postmodernism to describe the condition of knowledge in the most highly developed societies. The emergence of the phenomenon of postmodern caused by the crisis of modernism`s metaphysical philosophy. According to J.F. Lyotard, modernism is losing its functors, great hero, great dangers, great voyages and great goal. In contrast postmodernism denies any kind of ideology, dominance, violence or war for the sake of peace and agreement. It contradicts monism, unification, totalitarianism and necessity of utopias. Also it approves the idea of diversity, the competition of paradigms and coexistence of diverse elements. Otherwise the conception of pluralism is the one of the main postmodernism feature. Postmodernism was emerged to explain the global conditions of the last decades of twentieth century. In consequence, it is intended for explaining the contemporary crisis phenomena and processes, finding new priorities, aims and tasks for humanity. That is why the transformation of social, cultural and economic lives tends to form the new basis of modern societies which faces a task of changing orientations and revaluation basic social and political values. A lot of philosophers agree to main idea of dominance the value consciousness over the ideological one. Nowadays axiological systems of the groups, societies or states become similar to each other. Political values can be considered like core and universal. They are characterized as rule of law, sovereignty, observation of human rights, individualism, freedom, equity, tolerance, peace, consensus, pluralism etc. These political values are basic for contemporary postmodern country. Despite the certain set of state`s political values postmodern nation state suffer from the tendencies of globalization which minimize the guide role of the nation state. That is why modern country needs to be rethought according to postmodern paradigm. Ukraine also needs to rethink the current and future status of its values and its place in the world`s order. On the one hand, declared by Ukraine its euro integration vector requires acceptance universal European political values such as dominance individual values over national ones, diversity of political behavior and prevailing role of global axiology over national. On the other hand, having a system crisis inherited from Soviet Union, Ukraine should form its own national identity on basis of national idea and then implement political and national values like responsibility, justice, dignity etc. After Ukrainian achieving independence from Soviet Union new values emerged such as democracy, freedom, constitutional state, observing human rights, justice and national patriotism. They were declared as the course of Ukrainian development but the implementation had faced some difficulties like reactionaries and oligarchic groups. To O. Babkina`s mind, the actual problem of modern Ukraine is both unity of Ukraine and its contradiction from external threat of its sovereignty. Moreover the dire threat of national integrity influenced over social consolidation, invoked forming sociopolitical values and determined geopolitical vector for Ukraine. Positive factors for Ukrainian axiological system are consolidation of national idea, overcoming the value cleavage among political elites and citizens, growing patriotism of financial groups and authority. To sum up, Ukraine is building its own Postmodern to be a competitive and perspective actor of foreign policy due to its efforts of overcoming the value cleavage of Ukrainian society and strengthen first positive achievements.

The research paper is going to revolve around Paul Auster’s urban dystopia entitled In the Country of Last Things. Yet, my claim is that the novel may also be categorised as an American city novel in which flâneuristic account plays a significant role. The focal point of the paper is going to be the comparison between Austerian figure of the urban stroller with a traditional one as developed in the 19th century Paris. Although since then there have been numerous transformations and reformulations regarding literary representations of the city walker, I shall examine the protagonist Anna Blume in reference to features characteristic for a traditional 19th century urban stroller. Some theorists claim that women cannot be regarded as city walkers; yet, the aim of the research paper is to prove that Anna, although a female character, can be considered as a postmodern variation of a flâneur.  Auster’s fictional world might be compared to Lewis Mumford’s “theater of social action”[1] where the inhabitants’ quotidian drama is staged. This urban theater functions as fertile ground for the city walker’s observations, investigations, as well as subsequent artistic productions. A conventional flâneur is characterised as an aimless stroller for whom the very act of the ‘inspection’ of the crowd is a source of leisure. Yet, his desire is not only to experience the surroundings, but also to observe the physical construction of the city as well as its social dimension – the people around. Taking into consideration the very specificity of the flâneuristic figure, Anna Blume, despite representing the female part of society, can be regarded as a postmodern urban stroller since her only means of discovering and ‘learning’ the space is by walking along the city. Hence, the character created by Auster both diverges from the conventional image of the city walker in term of the characteristic features, and is consistent with it when the scope of the flâneur’s responsibilities is considered.[1] Mumford, Lewis. “What Is a City?” In LeGates Richard and Frederic Stout The City Reader. Opisywane w artykule klimaty nie mogą nie wpływać na rozumienie, ale i przeżywanie rzeczywistości małżeństwa i rodziny. W każdym razie warto przyglądać się implikacjom płynącym z nadreprezentacji prefiksu „post” we współczesnych narracjach.
The article deals with the problem of overusing the prefix “post” in social studies discourse and humanistic discourse as well as in public and colloquial language in contemporary times. The situation of a human being in the (post)modern epoch seems to be the situation of a post-human being living in post-reality. Trends discussed in the article must influence not only the understanding but also the experiencing of the reality of marriage and family. It is certainly worthwhile to analyze the implications arising from an over-representation of the prefix “post” in contemporary narrations.

CEL NAUKOWY: Celem analizy jest konceptualne zarysowanie modelów człowieczeństwa przyszłości. W zamierzeniach artykułu mieści się również przedstawienie refleksji nad kondycją współczesnego człowieka w kulturowym kontekście ponowoczesności. Kontekst ten dla celów niniejszej pracy zostanie określony mianem ponowoczesnego romantyzmu. NARZĘDZIA I METODY BADAWCZE: Przedmiotem diagnozy jest model człowieczeństwa uformowany na podstawie „aksjologicznych antynomii współczesności”. Pozwalają one kulturę ponowoczesności zestawić ze wzorcami typowymi dla XIX-wiecznego romantyzmu. W rezultacie człowieczeństwo da się opisać poprzez wewnętrzne napięcia, które wyznaczają terminy: tymczasowość – nieśmiertelność, samorealizacja – poświęcenie; konsumpcja – praca; vita activa – vita contemplativa. Praca ma charakter socjologicznej analizy teoretycznej. Jej celom służy metodologia „postmodernistycznej nauki”. Przez to też narzędziem diagnozy stanie się metafora oraz kategoria archetypu, pozwalająca ostatecznie dookreślać horyzonty człowieczeństwa. PROCES WYWODU: Wywód składa się z trzech części. W pierwszej z nich wprowadzona zostaje metafora labiryntu – podstawowe narzędzie poznania i diagnostyki. Pozwoli ona wyeksponować podstawę napięcia w konstrukcji człowieka i odnaleźć wiodącą narrację kształtującą współczesne człowieczeństwo. Jest nią ponowoczesny romantyzm. Identyfikacja odmian i cech narracji ponowoczesnego romantyzmu to drugi etap pracy. Legitymizuje on zastosowanie w kolejnej już – trzeciej części – kategorii archetypu. Pojęcie to umożliwi wskazanie ukrytych w narracji ponowoczesnego romantyzmu wzorów człowieczeństwa. WYNIKI ANALIZY NAUKOWEJ: Podstawowym wynikiem analizy są modele ponowoczesnego człowieczeństwa zapisane w archetypach Prometeusza, Orfeusza, Ikara i Narcyza. Ich szczegółowa diagnostyka pozwala wskazać podstawowe nurty formacyjne człowieczeństwa, takie jak: transhumnaizm, indywidualizm i imaginaryzm. Jednocześnie umożliwia identyfikację ograniczeń każdego modelu i wskazanie związanych z nimi zagrożeń.WNIOSKI, INNOWACJE, REKOMENDACJE: Ostateczne wnioski i rekomendacje wiążą się z analizą ponowoczesnego romantyzmu. Nurt ten daje się opisać w dwóch formach: ideacyjnej i zwulgaryzowanej – przepracowanej przez kulturę popularną. Pierwsza z wymienionych określa szansę formującego się na jej podstawie modelu, a druga eksponuje zagrożenia.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The goal of this analysis is to provide conceptual descriptions of future humanity models. The article will also reflect on the contemporary human condition in the cultural context of postmodernism. For the purposes of this paper, that context will be referred to as postmodern romanticism.RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: At the core of this study is a model of humanity developed on the basis of ‘axiological present-day antinomies’. Based on these antinomies, postmodern culture can be compared to the models typical of 19th century romanticism. As a result, humanity can be described through internal conflicts between such notions as transience vs immortality, self actualisation vs sacrifice, consumption vs work, and vita activa vs vita contemplativa. This paper is a sociological theoretical analysis. It relies on postmodern research methodology.And as such, it uses metaphor and archetype to ultimately describe the horizons of humanity.PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: This study has three parts. The first introduces the labyrinth metaphor as the primary exploration and assessment tool. It helps identify the basic tensions inhumans and find the leading narrative that underlies contemporary humanity. This narrative is postmodern romanticism. Stage two identifies the types and characteristics of the postmodern romanticnarrative. This lays the groundwork for the third part, which employs the category of archetype. This concept serves to explore the models of humanity fostered by the postmodern romantic narrative.RESEARCH RESULTS: The primary results of this analysis are the postmodern models of humanity embodied by the Prometheus, Orpheus, Icarus, and Narcissus archetypes. A detailed assessment of these helps identify such fundamental movements in humanity development as transhumanism, individualism, and imaginarism. In addition, each model is examined to identify its limitations and the related risks.CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The final conclusions and recommendations follow from the analysis of postmodern romanticism. That philosophy can be perceived as having two forms, ideological and vulgarised, or processed by the popular culture. The former describes the opportunities offered by the model that builds on it, while the latter focuses on the related risks.

After the turning point of 1989, the subject of religiosity was undertaken in Czech literature by the younger generation of writers born in the 1960s. Their presence on the literary scene was noticed at the time and described as a distinctive phenomenon. These writers dealt with religious ideas in a way that ignored Catholic dogmas, religious tradition and the instructions of the Church; they also mixed together religious threads derived from foreign cultures and cults, including non-European ones. These tendencies, as well as the characteristic literary forms preferred by the writers, such as pastiche, parody and irony, justified a postmodern interpretation of this literary topic. The postmodern reading, which is still popular, could be also related to the widespread millenarian moods of the 1990s. My paper aims to present a different interpretation of this phenomenon using the framework of postsecular thought. In this approach, the non-doctrinal, non-traditional descriptions of religious experience which can be found in Czech literature of the 1990s turns out to involve peculiar contact with the transcendental sphere, or a struggle for such contact, or an expression of metaphysical yearnings. The issue is raised of how such religious expressions belong to the modern experience of faith and how they belong to the Czech tradition of religiosity. In addition, two novels by Czech writers are analyzed as an example of the postsecular approach to the issue: Angel by Jáchym Topol and Mefitis by Martin Komárek.

The article is an attempt to grasp a feature of the literary and cultural phenomenon of Zuzanna Ginczanka, a Ukrainian-born Polish poetess of the Jewish origin. It refers to 1) biographical elements, 2) their mediation in chosen critical works, as well as 3) the samples of Ginczanka’s literary output. The key concept for my investigations is openness (understood mainly as indeterminacy of meaning), which I associate with the intellectual climate of postmodernism, to trace, however, the modalities and variations of openness in Ginczanka’s life, criticism and poetry.
В статье я пытаюсь уловить определенную литературную и культурную черту феномена Зузанны Гинчанки, польской поэтессы еврейского происхождения. Я имею в виду 1) биографические элементы, 2) критические труды, где эти элементы обрабатываются и интерпретируются, а также 3) избранные поэтические произведения. Лейтмотивом моего размышления является понятие открытости (в смысле неопределенности), которое связываю с интеллектуальным климатом постмодернизма, но при этом отслеживаю его различные формы в жизни Гинчанки, в критических трудах ей посвященных и в ее поэзии.

It is assumed that some of the most important events in human history have been determined by the appearance of literacy in place of orality. It was also the beginning of the whole philosophical tradition of ourWest thinking, as well as, in consequence, of self-consciousness of homo sapiens. It seems like to- day we are facing another turning point. Homo sapiens transforms into ...homo videns. Since perception of pictures has become a substitute of thinking, the intelligent human being has been dethroned by mindless telekid (G. Sartori). In this article I attempt to analyze the abovementioned problem and try to give some thought to the question of the influence of the transformation on a new quality of philosophical thinking. Are we dealing with a new state of our mind, the ‘pictural’ one (compare Havelock’s idea of the Homeric state of mind)? If yes, in what context should we consider the new state of mind? Shall we somehow involve here some new categories such are transversality, trans-thinking, trans-rationality or, finally, trans-philosophy? Moreover, what are the consequences of the transformation? Is it a chance or rather a symptom of a deep crisis, “the crisis of human mind and cognitive abilities” (G. Sartori)?

The aim of this paper is to comprehensively reconstruct the reception of postmodernism in Peter McLaren’s critical/radical pedagogy. On a more general level, the article discusses the pedagogical perils of uncriticalinfatuation with poststructuralist and postmodernist principles of dismantling grand metanarratives and debunking the notions of truth, totality, and universalism and replacing them with the notions of pluralism and perspectivism. The author seeks to verify the statement that McLaren’s response to postmodern developments in philosophy and social theory is in as much similar to that of Henry Giroux’s that it produces a project of education informed by postmodern ideas. The thesis – advanced in the mid 1990s by Tomasz Szkudlarek – is refuted on the basis of thorough a analysis of both earlier and more contemporary texts of McLaren where the main tenets of postmodern theory are severely criticized. The argument about the evolution of McLaren’s thought from a cautious appropriation of some elements of postmodernism to its downright condemnation is supported by the theory of its increasing radicalization under the influence of Marxism. The alternative to the illusory radicality of postmodernism – denounced as affirming the status-quo – is “pedagogy of revolution,” which emerges as strictly political, interventionist praxis whose aim is no longer discourse analysis but concrete social struggle against the oppressive capitalist class relations.

Paul Feyerabend’s philosophy, mainly due to his radically pluralistic claims, may be regarded as an example of postmodern philosophy of science. At the same time Feyerabend’s thought contains some strictly modern ideas and noticing those ideas is important for proper reading of his works. In this paper, in order to properly understand this conceptual tension, I compare Feyerabend’s philosophy with Bruno Latour’s idea of amodernity. The first part of the paper presents modern and postmodern themes present in Feyerabend’s works. The second part elucidates the concept of amodernity expounded by Latour in the essay We have never been modern. In the third part I show that Feyerabend’s philosophy displays all of the most important features of amodern way of thinking (in Latour’s sense). In the final section I discuss how the interpretation of Feyerabend’s thought as an example of amodern philosophy may be fruitful in further research.

Should we be afraid of the truth? This question is important not only for the world of philosophy, but also politics. Reluctance to fixed and immutable foundation used to characterize the left . This right has traditionally appealed to what is permanent, unchanging, universal, in what social order should be rooted. And for that it is criticized. It has been suggested that we should reject the right-wing chains, reject universalism, to become free and head toward postmodernism. Postmodernism today seems to give hope for further development, including policy based on new narratives – particularly left-wing. Postmodernism, as it is seen by Grzegorz Lewicki, seems to be close to the critical theory that can help us in the liberation and emancipation. Closer analysis, however, allows us to see that also in critical theory there is a desire to discover the truth about what is reality. It also allows to see that the category of truth is not as bad as it is painted. It is not necessary to get rid of the reference to the category of truth, because truth is not the problem in itself. We can still keep it without sacrificing what was the best in postmodernism. If we are successful, then there might be the chance to reconcile the left with the right.

W Soku z żuka (1988) Tima Burtona, podobnie jak w całym jego kinie, dużo mówi się o śmierci, ale śmierć – zgodnie z duchem postmodernizmu – jest tu traktowana lekko i beztrosko, i właściwie niczym szczególnym nie różni się od życia. Prawdziwa śmierć dla Burtona jest czymś innym: stanem stagnacji i letargu, powtarzalnością stale tych samych wzorów działania. Przejawy takiej śmierci zostały w tekście zbiorczo nazwane „tautologiami”. Aby im przeciwdziałać, amerykański reżyser wprowadza na scenę tytułową postać, która jest czynnikiem anarchii i rozkładu, ściągającym na świat filmowy lawinę nonsensów. Postać ta do tego stopnia wymyka się schematom, że nie ma nawet stabilnej wersji imienia: raz jest to „Beetlejuice”, innym razem „Betelgeuse” lub jakieś pośrednie, zmutowane formy tych dwóch, przy czym nie sposób orzec, która z tych wersji jest właściwa i ostateczna. Odpowiednio do tego kształtuje się narracja, również pozbawiona czytelnych reguł. Taki typ kina popularnego, wkraczający jednak do głównego nurtu, jedna z autorek piszących o Burtonie nazwała „kinem patafizycznym” (termin wywodzący się od patafizyki wymyślonej przez Alfreda Jarry’ego).
In Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice (1988), as in all his movies, a lot is said about death, but death, according to the spirit of postmodernism, is approached here lightly and carelessly. Actually, there is no difference between death and life. For Burton, real death is something different - a state of Stagnation and lethargy, a repetition of the same patterns of acting, all of which have been named “tautologies” here. To counteract them, the American director introduces the title character, who triggers off anarchy and decay, who incurs an avalanche of nonsense onto the movie world. This character goes so much beyond any schemes that there is not even a stable version of its name - sometimes it is “Beetlejuice”, another time “Betelgeuse”, however, there is no way to decide which of these versions is correct and final. At the same time, the narration is shaped accordingly, without any clear rules. This type of popular cinema, but entering the mainstream anyway, was called “the pataphysical cinema” by one of the authoresses writing about Burton (this term stemming from Pataphysics conceived of by Alfred Jarry).
