The article presents the issue of philosophy and science cultivated by the Polish Jesuit, Fr Wojciech Tylkowski (1624-1695), a polymath viz. scientist of many varied interests. Tylkowski acted primarily as an educator and lecturer in philosophy at schools run by the Jesuit Order. Tylkowski aspired toward mastering all philosophical and natural science known to him. The notion of the complete scholar of the baroque period – the homo universalis  – was a crucial factor in his way of thinking and scientific work. The synthesizing of all knowledge known to him marked the purpose of his writing. For this very reason he also led independent studies, which resulted in his writing activity in the fields of philosophy, theology, astronomy, mathematics, geography, technology, art, and even agriculture. Tylkowski practised philosophy in the spirit of the Aristotelian-Scholastic tradition. An important area of his writing initiative is the so-called philosophia curiosa , understood as philosophy that evokes in the mind of the recipient an interest in the world and knowledge of the subject. Tylkowski was an original representative of this style of practising philosophy and science. His books, especially those written in the popularized convention, the philosophia curiosa , were directed towards a wide circle of readers.

This article presents selected aspects of potential intersections of archeology and art, the potential resulting from it, and also threats. We presented our interpretation of the perception of this issue, which is from the archaeologist’s perspective. We referred to specific examples that refer both to our experience resulting from more than a year of cooperation between the Faculty of Archeology of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and the Faculty of Art Education and Curatorial Studies of the University of Arts in Poznań, as well as the external sources. An attempt was made to answer the question – how archaeologists can use the knowledge and experience of artists. We focused on the example of museology and the popularization of archaeological knowledge, how to make it more attractive, and to facilitate public reception. At the same time, we presented our observations on the examples of the use of archeology by artists as inspiration.

After having distinguished the two main contexts for the transmission of knowledge – the esoteric and exoteric – the paper offers a systematic comparison between scientific and popular science texts in terms of inventio, dispositio and elocutio. The popular science texts tend to present knowledge in anthropocentric terms, showing the relevance of the message to the recipients’ everyday lives. They turn out to be shorter than genuine scientific texts, and this is achieved, in part, by eliminating information about the methodologies used. The user-friendly vocabulary offers the audience a sense of familiarity with the presented topic, which is, however, different from in-depth specialist knowledge.

The Marceli Nencki Foundation for Supporting Biological Sciences is a non-go- vernmental organization that conducts public benefit activities. The statutory goal of the Foundation is to support scientific, popularization, and educational efforts in the field of biological sciences. The Foundation focuses its activities primarily on students and young scientists who wish to bring biological sciences closer to young people and foster their creative development. Close cooperation with the Nencki Institute and the promotion of its scientific heritage result in many joint initiatives, including lectures, workshops, study visits, Art and Science, and co- organized scientific conferences. The Foundation began its activities on Novem- ber 14, 2012. Its founders were professors from Nencki Institute and members of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Jean-Henri Fabre made numerous discoveries observing meticulously the lifestyle and behaviour of insects which lived around his traditional house in Provence. Those discoveries are still valid, even though the heterodox entomologist became the standard bearer for opponents of transformism, which perpetually progressed and is about to triumph. Fabre is first known to have been an outstanding observer, but also to have gathered together in a colossal collection his entomologist’s memoirs, whose literary – and even poetic – value is celebrated as far away as Japan. This article proposes to question the validity of the preconceived idea that Les Souvenirs entomologiques adds to the accurate eye of the observer the fertile imagination of the poet. Refusing to just make note of this a posteriori superposition, it hypothesizes that there is a reunification of the inflexible empiricism of the biological approach with a creative imagination which reveals to be omnipresent in every phase of Fabre’s enterprise: the hypothesis, the validation by observation, and the literary transcription.

The objective of this study is to conduct a stylistic analysis of the synopses publicized in the end-of-the-year ranking list of 2017 scientific “breakthroughs” from Science Magazine. The article provides a review of literature on science popularization (also known as science accommodation) and presents the typology of news values and rationalization cues that are used by editors to make science-related coverage both newsworthy and credible at the same time. The article lists the possible ways in which scientific findings can be stylistically constructed as “breakthroughs”. The analysis consists in quantifying and illustrating the typical stylistic maneuvers for framing selected science-related issues as “breakthroughs.” The article concludes with the implications of such constructions for the public understanding of science.

Praca przedstawia osiągnięcia i pozycję Ośrodka wrocławskiego w krajowym środowisku inżynierii rolniczej. W 2007 r. Ośrodek ten obchodził 40-lecie realizacji kierunku studiów o aktualnej nazwie "Technika rolnicza i leśna". W związku z powyższym organizatorzy postanowili uczcić swój jubileusz organizacją konferencji międzynarodowej, w trakcie której przedstawiono zarówno osiągnięcia badawcze i dydaktyczne własne jak i krajowego środowiska inżynierii rolniczej.
The paper presents the achievements of the Wrocław Centre and its position in the national agricultural engineering circle. In 2007 the Centre celebrated the 40th anniversary of the realization of the line of studies currently called "Agricultural and Forestry Engineering". In this connection the organizers decided to celebrate this jubilee with an international conference during which scientific and didactic achievements of the Center and those of the national agricultural engineering circle were presented.

It is quite a problematic issue, whether there is any connection between popularization and institution. The article presents different understanding of the term ‘institution’, which appears to have more creative nature. The second part of the essay considers Michal Heller’s critical strategies of reading. Heller’s reviews seem to be a kind of popular science communication, tightly connected not only to the academic institutions. It is the relationship between the popularization and the institution that authorizes to talk about formation of the discourse.

The main field of interest is the sensational character of texts with scientific subject matter. This is a characteristic trait of potentially every field of social life and almost every type of discourse, but in popular science texts and texts popularizing scientificknowledge it is presented in a more balanced way. On the basis of many examples of texts presented in online information portals the author shows how variously journalists value scientific discoveries and how this opinion depends on the evaluation of the scientific circles. In conclusion, it might be stated that the sensational character, so inseparably connected with tabloids, differs from the sensational character of popular science texts and texts popularizing scientific knowledge.

One of the statutory provisions of public media is to popularize the knowledge of the Polish language – the present authors analyse diversified aspects determining the effectiveness of the execution of the task and the media’s commitment to its social responsibility, and proceed to evaluate the basic assignments and responsibilities involved in the journalistic profession. These responsibilities result largely from the reception of the profession by the general public, and from those that emerge within the context of studies on language authority figures in present-day Poland. The next stage of the analysis involves an evaluation of the activities of all-Polish national broadcasters in view of their practical implementation and execution of the commitments set in Art. 21, Section 1a, item 8 of the Radio and Television Act (diffusion and divulgation of the knowledge of the Polish language). The remaining part of the article, including postulative claims, results from an analysis of the activities popularizing the knowledge on Polish available in the media and from the conviction of the necessity of expanding them beyond just grammaticality and correctness in the language use.

The article entitled Polish Theology Viewed from a Roman Perspective is the fruit of the author’s reflection on theology in Poland, after a stay of nearly 20 years in the Eternal City. Apart from many critical insights, it also contains several proposals concerning the renewal of the situation. One of them is an urgent necessity to present the results of research made by Polish theologians in the Western theological journals. Moreover, the article underscores the need of publication of reviews, which could indicate the best editions of the theological works and original researches of Polish theologians, appearing in Poland. It suggests the necessity to create a central website which could provide information about the activity of educational centers and theological associations in Poland. The author also proposes that extensive research should be undertaken aimed at establishing the original features, which distinguish Polish theology on the background of theological reflection practiced in the West.
Artykuł zatytułowany Polska teologia oczami rzymianina jest owocem refleksji autora nad teologią w Polsce, po blisko 20-letnim pobycie w Wiecznym Mieście. Obok wielu krytycznych spostrzeżeń zawiera również propozycje rozwiązania dostrzeżonych problemów. Tekst zwraca uwa- gę na konieczność prezentacji i popularyzacji wyników badań polskich teologów w zachodnich cza- sopismach teologicznych. Akcentuje również konieczność recenzowania godnych polecenia publi- kacji oraz oryginalnych wyników badań, ukazujących się w Polsce. Podkreśla konieczność stwo- rzenia centralnej strony internetowej, która gromadziłaby informacje o aktywności poszczególnych ośrodków i stowarzyszeń teologicznych w Polsce. Autor artykułu proponuje ponadto podjęcie sze- rokich badań mających na celu ustalenie oryginalnych cech, wyróżniających polską teologię na tle teologicznej refleksji uprawianej na Zachodzie.

The article presents in the synthetic manner the achievements of 20 years of the winter scientific school “Scientific, Technical and Organizational Progress in Agriculcture”. Basic terms concerning organization of scientific meetings were explained and then the origin of organization of schools in agricultural engineering, their participants and popularization activity was presented. Finally, impact of the Zakopane school on the intellectual development of its participants and their professional career was presented.

Jednym z założeń, towarzyszących ogłoszonemu w 1992 roku Katechizmowi Kościoła katolickiego, jest powstanie opracowań doktrynalnych przeznaczonych dla zawężonego kręgu odbiorców. Przykładem publikacji o charakterze popularyzatorskim są m.in. Kompendium Katechizmu Kościoła katolickiego (wyd. 2005) oraz YOUCAT. Katechizm Kościoła katolickiego dla młodych (wyd. 2011, wierny przekład z języka niemieckiego). Pozycje te łączy powrót do tradycyjnej kompozycji katechizmowej, opartej na blokach składających się z pytania i odpowiedzi (z formy tej zrezygnowano w Katechizmie Kościoła katolickiego). Przedmiotem artykułu jest analiza pytań, zastosowanych na kartach YOUCAT, obejmująca 3 aspekty: (1) status pytań katechizmowych, (2) ich typologię oraz (3) wybrane cechy charakterystyczne, takie jak obecność presupozycji, zróżnicowanie relacji nadawczo-odbiorczych oraz niejednorodność stylistyczna. Autorka wysuwa wnioski dotyczące służebnej, dydaktycznej i perswazyjnej funkcji form dialogowych, kwalifikuje pytania katechizmowe jako pozorne i opisuje ich językową specyfikę, sprowadzającą się do korzystania z kilku schematycznych rozwiązań.
A common feature of the researched publications: Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (2005) and YOUCAT. Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church (2011), being a form of popularization of Catechism of the Catholic Church (1992), is a return to the traditional catechism composition based on blocks consisting of questions and answers. The purpose of the article is to analyze the questions used on YOUCAT pages. The analysis covers three aspects: 1. the status of catechism questions, 2. their typology, and 3. selected characteristics, such as the presence of presupposition, diversification of originator-recipient relations, and stylistic heterogeneity. The author draws conclusions regarding the servile, didactic and persuasive function of dialogue forms, qualifies catechism questions as only seeming questions and describes their linguistic specificity, boiling down to the use of several schematic solutions.

This paper describes the popularization of the Italian pedagogical thought in Polish textbooks about the history of education in general. It has shown that the authors of the textbooks gave a lot of information about the Italian school system and education and presented profiles of outstanding Italian educationalists, e.g. St John Bosco or Maria Montessori. This paper indicates that in the past centuries Poles were open to Italian intellectual currents, academic trips to the Italian Peninsula, and education at local universities. Polish textbooks about the history of education were popular (in the 20th c.) and still are an important source of knowledge about the history of Italian education. For the purposes of this paper, the contents of the most representative and popular textbooks have been analysed.

Martí Domínguez (1966) is a biologist, writer and journalist, the author of novels, essays, and press articles. In his novels Les confidències del comte de Buffon (1997) and El secret de Goethe (1999), he presents two great personalities of 18th century Europe and a scientific and cultural context of their lives and works. These novels contain information about debates, ideas, and theories related to the development of science (especially the natural sciences) in the Age of Enlightenment. In the article we study the narrative strategies used by the author in order to present issues regarding the history of natural sciences in modern Europe.

Der vorliegende Beitrag versucht zu zeigen, dass soziale Medien zu einem mächtigen Instrument geworden sind, um Wissenschaftsinhalte einem breiten Publikum zugänglich zu machen. Anhand ausgewählter Postings in sozialen Netzwerken (auf den populärsten Plattformen Facebook und Instagram) von deutschen und polnischen Universitäten wird gezeigt, wie das Wissen oder die Errungenschaften der MitarbeiterInnen von wissenschaftlichen Institutionen auf der Sprache- und der Bild-Fläche von Social-Media-Beiträgen popularisiert werden können. Dabei konzentriert sich der Autor auf solche Themenbereiche wie Buch- und Artikelpräsentationen, Vorträge zur Wissenschaftsförderung oder Wissenschaftsfestivals. In dem vorliegenden Beitrag wird auf unterschiedliche Vermittlungsverfahren oder Veranschaulichungsstrategien der Wissenschaftspopularisierung in der Online-Umgebung verwiesen. In diesem Zusammenhang weist der Autor auf die Bedeutung von Affordances der einzelnen Online-Plattformen hin. Es ist wichtig, dass die geeigneten Mittel für die Verbreitung des Wissens eingesetzt werden und an die Erwartungen und Bedürfnisse der (meist jungen) AdressatInnen angepasst werden können. Ein besonderes Augenmerk wird auf die so genannten Sozialen Embleme gelegt. Es sind u. a. Symbole und/oder Ausdrucksformen, die in einer bestimmten sozialen Gruppe oder Gemeinschaft eine spezifische Bedeutung haben. Darüber hinaus werden bestimmte wiederkehrende Strategien zur Integration von sozialen Emblemen in wissenschaftliche Inhalte gezeigt und der Einfluss von sozialen Emblemen auf die Viralität und Verbreitung wissenschaftlicher Inhalte in sozialen Medien thematisiert.
This article attempts to show that social media have become a powerful tool for making scientific content accessible to a wide audience. Using selected posts on social networks (on the most popular platforms Facebook and Instagram) from universities in Germany and in Poland, it is shown how the knowledge or achievements of employees of scientific institutions can be popularized through social media posts (through language and extra-linguistic means). The author focuses on topics such as book and article presentations, lectures on science promotion or science festivals. This article refers to different mediation methods or illustration strategies of science popularization in the online environment. In this context, the author points out the importance of individual online platforms’ affordances. It is important to ensure that the appropriate means are used for the dissemination of knowledge and can be adapted to the expectations and needs of the (mostly young) addressees. Particular attention is paid to so-called social emblems. These include symbols and/or forms of expression that have a specific meaning in a particular social group or community. In addition, certain recurring strategies for integrating social emblems into scientific content are shown and the influence of social emblems on the virality and dissemination of scientific content in social media is discussed.

Opis:
Accession of Poland to the European Union induced a variety of changes in different areas of life, including education. A second language was introduced as a compulsory subject in kindergarten and primary school and two compulsory foreign languages in general lower and upper secondary schools. English is the most popular of all languages in all types of schools, regardless of the level of education they represent. Globalization of the English language, the process which can be observed nowadays, has a significant impact on actions taken by schools to popularize learning this language. Therefore, the research was performed with a view to achieving a better understanding of the popularization of English language learning in primary schools in the larger context of a variety of factors. Basing on the analysis of research results, the conclusions reflecting real needs of learners as far as the more effective English language learning is concerned have been drawn. Sharing the research findings with the primary schools which participated in the research will contribute to their practical application.
