In the article, I discuss novels by ideologists and activists of the inter-war nationalist movement. Popular literature played a significant role in propagation of nationalist ideas. When looking at female characters in novels by Roman Dmowski, Stanisław Piasecki, Władysław Jan Grabski, Adam Doboszyński and Jędrzej Giertych, I indicate the role of stereotype as well as the presence of patriarchal and anti-Semitic discourse in these novels. In works of the young generation of nationalists, one may find more diversified portraits of women, which is connected with progressing emancipation of women in the inter-war period, as well as beginnings of their activity in the nationalist movement. I show the hazards connected with focusing on the feminist discourse without the context of the ideology propagated by these works. Therefore, I pay attention to relationships between the ideological assumptions of the National Radical Camp (ONR) and creation of the presented world in the works under discussion.

W artykule autorka porusza problem ciała w Wielorybach i ćmach. Dziennikach oraz w Królu Szczepana Twardocha i odnosi ją do sportu, transhumanizmu i kultury gwałtu. Badaczka wychodzi z założenia, że powieść popularna, którą jest Król, mówi nie tylko o stosunku zbiorowości do przedwojennej historii Polski (a szczególnie relacji Polaków i Żydów), ale reprezentuje też określoną ideologię, lekceważoną przez recenzentów. A to właśnie ta historia powinna zostać w pierwszej kolejności poddana analizie przez badaczy twórczości Twardocha.
In the article the author tackles the bodily aspects of two recent books by Szczepan Twardoch: Wieloryby i ćmy. Dzienniki (Whales and Moths. Diaries) and Król (The King) in the context of sports, transhumanism and rape culture. The main thesis is that as a pulp novel Król not only depicts a popular image of pre-war Poland (and in particular its Polish-Jewish relations) but also represents a specific yet often ignored ideological approach. The core aim is to fill this critical gap by identifying and analyzing this approach.

In contemporary Polish literature, crime stories whose plot is set in the pre-war Poland or earlier have become increasingly popular. Taking into consideration the fact that the second Republic of Poland was a multinational state, the authors of such novels must take into account the demographic aspects of the interwar society. Among the minorities living in Poland at that time, almost 10% were Jews; with anti-Semitism growing stronger. In crime stories whose plot is set before World War II, the ritual murder motif appears. This could raise a question of whether this happens: because of the correspondence between a crime story’s plot and the need of there being a murder in the plot for the sake of the story or, on the other hand, for the sake of deconstructing the falsehood or showing its relevance and fear connected to pogrom’s violence. In such a case, the crime story, apart from ludic aspects, would become an anthropological testament and a tool of fighting against anti-Semitic prejudices. The case studies in this article are novels written by: Zbigniew Miłoszewski, Ziarno prawdy (Grain of Truth), Zbigniew Białas, Korzeniec, Marek Bukowski & Maciej Dancewicz Najdłuższa noc (The Longest Night), Marek Krajewski, Głowa Minotaura (The Head of Minotaur) and Erynie (Erinyes), Konrad Lewandowski, Perkalowy dybuk (Perkale’s Dybuk), Piotr Schmandt, Pruska zagadka (A Prussian Riddle) and Adam Węgłowski, Przypadek Ritterów (The Ritters’ Case).
W ostatnich latach w Polsce niezwykłą popularnością cieszy się kryminał retro. Biorąc pod uwagę fakt, że II Rzeczpospolita była państwem wielonarodowościowym, autorzy muszą uwzględnić aspekty demograficzne. Wśród mniejszości zamieszkujących Polskę 10% stanowili Żydzi, a antysemityzm w międzywojniu przybierał na sile. W fabułach, których akcja toczy się w I połowie XX wieku pojawia się motyw mordu rytualnego. Można więc postawić pytanie, czy dzieje się tak ze względu na korelację kryminału ze zbrodnią, cel, jakim jest wzmocnienie atrakcyjności przekazu czy też dążenie do rozbicia fantazmatu, ukazania jego żywotności i obaw związanych z przemocą pogromową. W takim przypadku kryminał oprócz aspektów ludycznych stawałby się świadectwem antropologicznym i narzędziem walki z antysemickimi uprzedzeniami. Przedmiotem analizy będą więc powieści: Zbigniewa Miłoszewskiego Ziarno prawdy, Zbigniewa Białasa Korzeniec, Marka Bukowskiego i Macieja Dancewicza Najdłuższa noc, Marka Krajewskiego Głowa minotaura i Erynie, Konrada Lewandowskiego Perkalowy dybuk, Piotra Schmandta Pruska zagadka oraz Adama Węgłowskiego Przypadek Ritterów.

W artykule poddano genologicznej analizie drukowane teksty dedykacyjne zawarte w powieściach popularnych Remigiusza Mroza. Uwzględnienie głównych aspektów gatunku, tzn. strukturalnego, językowo-stylistycznego i pragmatycznego, daje możliwość zidentyfikowania zarówno elementów konwencjonalnych, nawiązujących do tradycji gatunku, jak i tych nieszablonowych. Celem badawczym jest więc tu obserwacja konkretnych realizacji tekstowych, co w konsekwencji, w drodze uogólnień, umożliwia wyznaczenie pewnych cech gatunkowych współczesnej dedykacji drukowanej, a następnie prowadzi do wniosków dotyczących genologicznego statusu omawianych form wypowiedzi. Okazuje się, że najwięcej modyfikacji gatunkowych we współczesnej dedykacji drukowanej jest podyktowanych zmianami dotyczącymi pragmatycznego aspektu gatunku. Analiza tekstów dedykacyjnych prowadzi do dwóch głównych wniosków. Po pierwsze, dynamika procesów komunikacyjnych oraz zmienność społecznych i kulturowych zachowań językowych doprowadziły do zmiany przeznaczenia komunikacyjnego dedykacji. Intencją komunikacyjną jest nie tyle sam akt ofiarowania adresatowi dzieła literackiego i tym samym chęć przypodobania się jego osobie, ile wykreowanie obrazu nadawcy komunikatu i chęć zyskania sympatii świadka ofiarodawczego aktu, czyli czytelnika. Po drugie, zamieszczane we współczesnych powieściach popularnych dedykacje drukowane stanowią realizację alternacyjnego wzorca gatunkowego.
This article offers a genologic analysis of the printed dedicational texts contained in the popular novels by Remigiusz Mróz. Considering the main aspects, i.e. structural, linguistic-stylistic, and pragmatic, of this genre makes it possible to identify both the conventional elements, that refer to the genre tradition, and the unconventional ones. The purpose of the investigation is therefore to observe concrete textual realizations, and in consequence, by way of generalization, to specify certain genre features of the contemporary printed dedication and draw conclusions concerning the genologic status of the discussed forms of communication. It turns out that most of the genre modifications in the contemporary printed dedication are determined by the changes in the pragmatic aspect of the genre. The analysis of the dedicational texts leads to two main conclusions. First, the dynamics of communication processes and the variability of social and cultural language behaviours changed the communicative purpose of dedication. The communicative intent is not so much the very act of offering the addressee the literary work and the desire to endear oneself to them by it, as creating an image of the sender of the message and the desire to gain sympathy of the witness of this act of offering, the reader. Second, printed dedications published in the contemporary popular novels are realizations of an alternating genre pattern.

The Polish popular novel for women, which has had its heyday since 1989, serves two main functions: it is intended to entertain and to give comfort (therapeutic function). These commercial novels are written by women, for women and about women with a view to providing consolation and to making readers feel immersed (at least in the course of reading) in a better world. Most of such novels typically feature female pro-tagonists, who, having found themselves at a crossroads, decide to leave the big cities and retreat to the countryside or suburban areas, where they can connect with nature and create their private asylums, or their own Arcadias. As I demonstrate in my analysis, their Arcadias may be either purely symbolic (Katarzyna Grochola) or created both to portray idyllic spaces (Małgorzata Kalicińska) and to highlight and praise their regional character (Katarzyna Enerlich). Against this main tendency, there are examples of anti-Arcadias (e.g., Prowincja by Barbara Kosmowska), which naturally complement the positive renditions of the myth. Remarkably, however, the above mentioned novelists in essence do not aim at resolving any existential dilemmas, but instead seek to compose well-constructed stories that would meet up their target readers’ expectations. In this context, it seems justified to argue that it is mainly for commercial reasons that the Arcadian myth is so frequently invoked and recycled in the Polish popular novel for women: escapist novels are simply more likely to sell well, as evidenced by the tremendous popularity of Harlequin novels.

The present sketch traces the process of verifying allegory which takes place in the Young Poland prose, in which authors use the images of sculptures. The interpretation of Pavoncello, a story by Stefan Żeromski, Chimera, a novel by Tadeusz Jaroszyński and The Angel of Death by Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer allows to put forward a thesis that the allegorical function of sculptural works of art which appear in the presented world is challenged, whereas allegory understood as the compositional principle of a work is strengthened. Verification of allegory for the benefit of allegoresis is done by challenging the ‘semiogenic’ function of allegory and at the same time by appreciating it for defining trails of interpretation and universalizing meanings.

Artykuł podejmuje problematykę związaną z powieścią tajemnic – zapomnianym już dzisiaj gatunkiem, który zdominował rynek literacki w XIX wieku. Podstawą artykułu jest analiza archetypu gatunkowego, czyli Tajemnic Paryża Eugeniusza Sue. Autorka określa inspiracje tego typu powieściowego, jego cechy gatunkowe (nowi bohaterowie, nowe miejsca zdarzeń, nietypowy sposób prezentowania rzeczywistości, zjawisko inicjacji). Analizie poddane zostaje również nowoczesne miasto, które jest nową przestrzenią powieściowych zdarzeń. W tym artykule autorka zastanawia się również nad tym, jak powieści tajemnic, nazywane nawet powieściami rewolucyjnymi, oddziaływały na społeczeństwo XIX wieku.
The article deals with issues related to the mystery novel—a genre now forgotten but in 19th century one that was the most known genre of popular literature. The basis of the article is the analysis of the genre archetype—Mysteries of Paris—written by Eugene Sue. The author identifies the inspirations for this type of novel, its genre features (new hero models, new locations of events, an unusual way of presenting reality, the phenomenon of initiation). An analyis of the modern city is also included, as a new space of novel’s plot. The author also reflects on how mystery novels, even called revolutionary novels, influenced the society of the nineteenth century.

This article combines a general introduction to the crime fi ction of Walery Przyborowski with a study of the structure of the plot of his novels. The analyses of ten of his novels conclude with a typology of their narrative schemes, shown in the context of certain invariant patterns and the conventions of related literary genres. While the main objective of this study is to outline the structure of crime story and the social issues depicted in Przyborowski’s crime fi ction, it also pays some attention to the ways in which it refl ects his concerns about contemporary life and the condition of Poland under foreign rule. Basically, Przyborowski’s formula is to make use of the staples of the genre – mystery, adventure, romance – and the techniques of the popular novel. Moreover, his novels, like all of the 19th-century crime fi ctions, are clearly indebted to the conventions of the historical novel.

Emma Jeleńska-Dmochowska’s novels: Young Lady (1899), The Ring (1907), Woman, Miserable Fluff... (1909) seem to be an insightful, though probably unintentional, study of female self-destruction. At the root of this self-destruction is always the male element – the character of a father or brother, cousin, husband. A man who – through a relationship of kinship or affinity – gives the female heroin her status and defines her identity, and who is (or was) the owner or co-owner of the landed property located in the Polesian borderlands. Such story patterns and creations of the heroines are already implemented by the works of Eliza Orzeszkowa (e.g. Two Poles, 1893) and Maria Rodziewiczówna (e.g. Dewajtis, 1889). In my article, I want to trace the similarities (and differences) between the narratives of Jeleńska-Dmochowska and Orzeszkowa. I am also interested in reflecting on whether the analyzed novels of the Rose and Fly author really have such a pessimistic tone. It seems that in these stories of self-destruction one can find their reverses – stories of self-salvation. Finally – I would like to think about the consequences of this double interpretation for the reception of Jeleńska-Dmochowska’s work.

The article presents an analysis of selected functions carried out by the popular cultural references in Żulczyk’s novel Zrób mi jakąś krzywdę, czyli wszystkie gry wideo są o miłości. The first section of the article considers some methodological problems related to the subject matter of the article and discusses the book in view of Shusterman’s aesthetic experience model in the aesthetic legitimization of popular art. The next section includes the analysis of the text and focuses on such issues as references to popular culture in the protagonist’s characteristics. In the conclusion of the article, the author sums up that the popular culture threads are not included in the novel purely for decorative reasons but constitute it at a multi-tiered level and cannot be removed from the novel otherwise it would disrupt, or even destroy, its structure and thus, without some knowledge of the basic elements of pop culture, the reading and understanding of the book can be substantially impaired and incomplete.

The aim of the work is to highlight the vitality and functional diversity of biblisms in contemporary ‘low’ literature imitating everyday language. This article presents the results of the use dozens of lexical units. Sometimes biblisms are modified- most often they are mentioning modifications (eg. Man cannot live by bed alone ← Man cannot live by bread alone). Less frequently we meet shortening modifications (eg. pluck hair ←pluck the hair out) and developing ones(have some remains of oil in the head ← have oil in the head). These modifications can often be justified contextually. Biblisms used in crime novels usually emphasize the seriousness of the situation and they can also introduce an element of humor.

Opis:
W niniejszym artykule przedmiotem uwagi jest kilka sposobów uobecniania się motywu wolności lub jej braku w powieściach Pauliny Wilkońskiej, reprezentantki literatury popularnej XIX wieku. Zagadnienie to omówiono w odniesieniu do trzech sfer. Pierwsza z nich wiąże się z tematyzacją pragnienia wolności i doświadczania niewoli narodowej. Druga dotyczy ograniczeń swobody podmiotu w przestrzeni społeczno-obyczajowej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem sytuacji młodych ludzi poddanych przemocy przesądów i naciskom finansowym. Trzeci wymiar analizy obejmuje strategie wolności odautorskiej, wyrażające się w przyjemności pisania i jego autoterapeutycznej funkcji oraz wybranych zabiegach podtrzymujących więź z czytelnikiem. Bowiem to właśnie czytelnik jest tu traktowany jako niejawny, ale niezwykle ważny bohater prozy Wilkońskiej.
The main subject of this article is the several ways in which the motif of freedom, or the lack of it, is made present in the novels of Paulina Wilkońska, a representative of the 19th-century popular literature. The issue is discussed in relation to three aspects. The first is related to the thematization of the desire for freedom and the experience of national bondage. The second issue concerns the limitations of subjectivity in the social space, with particular attention to the situation of young people, enslaved by prejudices and financial pressures. The third dimension of the analysis includes strategies of authorial freedom, expressed in the pleasure of writing and its self-therapeutic function, as well as selected treatments that sustain the bond with the reader. For it is the reader who is treated here as the implicit but extremely important protagonist of Wilkońska's fiction.

The article deals with phenomena of the Gothic the most often described as a set of often-linked elements rather than a fixed genre. The text presents a variety of cultural incarnations of the convention: from the eighteenth century novel by horror movies to subcultural style of Goths. This essay also examines the basic Gothic concepts, like the uncanny and the abject, which determine the worlds depicted in Gothic narratives, especially characters who remain in close connection with the space formed as a labyrinth. Finally, the article is an attempt to answer the question about the source of the expansion of the aesthetics of the Gothic in the contemporary culture.

This article discusses three trial scenes from three different ancient Greek novels (by Chariton, Achilles Tatius, and Longus), in which naïve justice seems to be deliberately subverted. The titular concept of “naïve justice” is defined here in terms borrowed from Aristotle’s Poetics, where the term “double resolution” is used, disparagingly, of plots in which the good characters are all rewarded and the bad characters all punished. The argument is made that the trial scenes under discussion should raise doubts in the reader’s mind as to which of the parties is truly guilty, and which is truly innocent. This can be seen as a reflection of unexpectedly mature ethical sensibilities on the part of these often-underestimated writers, who seem to have grasped that the “double resolution” may make the reader feel good, but has little to do with the real world.
