    This paper presents an overview of the theoretical background on over- and under-politeness as well as on conventionalised irony. It goes on to explore these phenomena in relation to a collection of suppliant scenes by Euripides, since they are easy to compare in terms of the narrative pattern and the role performed by the characters. Along with other examples from the sample, this article attempts to propose that the idioms οὐκ οἶδ’ ἐγώ ‘I am not aware that’, ὡς ἔοικε ‘it seems’ and βούλῃ (+ subj. / acI); ‘do you want…?’, εἰ βούλῃ ‘if you want’ are likely cases of conventionalised overpoliteness.

    The aim of the article is to study the conversational behaviour of the Plautine old men in light of the politeness theory. The analysis concerns those scenes of salutatio and giving advice, where one of the speaker is senex, in order to examine features of his linguistic characterization.Según se desprende de la lectura de las obras plautinas, la caracterización de la figura del senex en las comedias de Plauto se centra en destacar su dignidad personal y pública como paterfamilias, un miembro de la élite económica y política. En este artículo hemos igualado la dignitas de los ancianos –que se revela en cada interacción verbal– con el concepto de la imagen social proveniente de la teoría de la cortesía lingüística. A continuación, hemos analizado dos tipos de comportamiento lingüístico (el saludo y las secuencias de aconsejar), donde el senex interactúa con personajes de diferente estatus social. En cuanto a las escenas de saludo realizadas por y hacia los ancianos, se percibe un alto grado de ritualización de la apertura dialógica, tanto más evidente entre dos senes. Las secuencias en las que se dan consejos a un noble paterfamilias también necesitan de varias estrategias de cortesía lingüística para no dañar su imagen social, puesto que este tipo de interacción verbal conlleva una asimetría de poder entre los hablantes. En una breve revisión de dichas escenas, hemos indicado los recursos utilizados tanto para afirmar la imagen del interlocutor (cortesía positiva), como para expresar respeto y reverencia hacia él (cortesía negativa). En consecuencia, la cortesía lingüística, como fenómeno conversacional, nos parece un importante recurso de la caracterización de los personajes plautinos no a nivel estilístico, sino a nivel de la interacción dialógica.

    This editorial to the special issue of RiL dedicated to relevance theory and problems of intercultural communication addresses the general requirements that a theory of communication must meet to be applicable to the analysis of intercultural communication. Then it discusses criticism levelled against Grice’s theory of conversational implicature and Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness on the grounds that these theories were not universal enough to be applied to all data. Finally, it offers some remarks on the applicability of relevance theory to intercultural pragmatics.

    W artykule omówiono wkład pięciu różnych podejść w ramach analizy dyskursu w interpretację i zrozumienie tego samego materiału empirycznego. Podejścia wybrane do porównania to analiza konwersacyjna, interakcyjna socjolingwistyka, teoria grzeczności, krytyczna analiza dyskursu i psychologia dyskursywna. Dane empiryczne stanowi dziewięciominutowe nagranie dźwiękowe nieformalnej interakcji w miejscu pracy. W artykule zostaną ze sobą zestawione różne sposoby analizy, zostaną również omówione teoretyczne i metodologiczne implikacje używania poszczególnych podejść.
    This article explores the contributions that five different approaches to discourse analysis can make to interpreting and understanding the same piece of data. Conversation analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, politeness theory, critical discourse analysis, and discursive psychology are the approaches chosen for comparison. The data is a nine-minute audio recording of a spontaneous workplace interaction. The analyses are compared, and the theoretical and methodological implications of the different approaches are discussed.

    Artykuł ma na celu pokazanie, jak lekarze i pacjenci negocjują znaczenia poprzez interakcję, a szczególnie za pomocą tworzonej narracji. Praca uzupełnia nowsze podejścia do analizy narracyjnej poprzez zastosowanie koncepcji ram grzecznościowych do opisu relacji między aktywnością językową lekarzy a narracjami pacjentów. Interdyscyplinarnym kontekstem analizy danych jest w artykule medycyna narracyjna (MN), czyli podejście kliniczne, które proponuje pacjentom „przestrzeń na ich opowieść”. Wyniki badania dowodzą, że zarówno pacjenci, jak i lekarze dążą do ukształtowania spójnej narracji. Analiza pokazuje, w jaki sposób w komunikacji między lekarzem a pacjentem rozwijają się ramy spójności narracyjnej, oraz dowodzi, że narracja odgrywa w tego typu interakcjach istotną rolę.
    This paper aims at showing a study on how doctors and patients negotiate meaning through interaction, concentrating on the role of narrative in the medical encounter. This paper complements more recent approaches to narrative analysis, within implementing the concept of politeness framework to analyze the relationship between doctor elicitations and patient narratives. The study also examines the clinical approach of Narrative Medicine (MN), which proposes patients the “space” in which to create their narratives, to create an interdisciplinary lens for investigating data. The main results show that both patients and doctors try to create narrative coherence. The analysis reveals how the frame of developing narrative coherence presents insights into the interactional narratives as they are co-constructed by participants. This study shows how politeness and NM add to the perception of doctor-patient interaction. Generally, the examination suggests that narrative plays an essential part in forming relevant meanings in medical interactions between the doctor and the patient.

    This paper has two major objectives. The first objective is to present the phenomenon of CB radio discourse of Polish drivers and discuss its main features. The second goal is to analyse two of these features from the angle of the (im)politeness issues, using the perspective of Relevance Theory. The first part of the paper is devoted to a general discussion of the phenomenon under scrutiny: the socio-cultural background of the CB radio discourse as well as its basic linguistic features are presented. In the second part of the paper, I discuss Escandell-Vidal’s approach to politeness within Relevance framework (Escandell-Vidal 2004) and integrate the model with the habitus-based definition of politeness (Bourdieu 1977; Watts 2003). The final part of the paper shows how the integrated approach can be used to examine two major aspects of the CB radio discourse: its conversational structure and the use of diminutives.
