Opis:
This article offers a reading of the poetry of Krystyna Miłobędzka (who since her debut in 1960 won high acclaim for her innovative, terse verse) from the perspective of everyday life, a sociocultural concept which brings into focus the intersection of the ordinary (the texture of people's daily lives) and activities or ideas that impinge on it. This study examines four such practices in turn. They are writing, movement, sense of place (multiple homes), and relating to the Other. Writing affects the sphere of everyday life presented in the poems in two different ways that can be subsumed under the metaphors of ‘a cage’ and indwelling. The study of movement reveals that it is interconnected with the sacred and the realm of multiple homes. Finally, the sphere of relations with the Other is controlled by metaphors related to hunger, home, sewing and speech. The main aim of the article is to explore the interconnections between these four domains and to demonstrate that the concept of everyday life holds the key to the appreciation of Krystyna Miłobędzka’s poetry.

An overview — even cursory — of literary culture in Lithuania in the first decades of the nineteenth century indicates there were many people who pursued poetry writing. According to Piotr Chmielowski, such a phenomenon did not exist then to this extent and with such intensity in any other part of Poland’s territory. As proof, in one of his works, he lists more than seventy names of poets who in the years 1815– –1822 had their poetry printed on the pages of journals published at the time. This number, certainly, does not fully reflect the scale of the said phenomenon. It should be noted that young people strove for a place on local poetry Parnassus, for example, also through parlor readings or through entries in memory books. Those young poets were often satisfied with minor, fleeting poems, handed from one person to another, without hope of the fruits of their poetic labor appearing on the pages of periodical press. Unfortunately, few of these poets possessed “talent above the mediocrity”, hence few manged to impress their audience. The paper aims to present selected views of contemporary audience concerning the poetry as its members also made an attempt at evaluation of the poems and aesthetic valorisation of the authors’ talent.

Using Michael Rothberg’s concept of the multidirectional memory, the author of this article proves that in Halina Poświatowska’s poetry memory of the Shoah is activated in confrontation with media images of the Vietnam War. In the poems, the memory of various genocides is dynamic, because of which such phenomena as competitiveness, rivalry, or dominance of forms of commemorating chosen mass crimes give way to the rule of consolidation of memory. The author also investigates the feminist motifs and observes the convergence between the forms of resistance presented by Poświatowska and the concepts of revolt discussed by Judith Butler (grievability, vulnerability). The involvement of the poet in matters contemporary to her is – next to the contemplation of the fragile body – the most important theme of her poetry, which has not been noted by the critics, who accused her of escapism, egotism, imitativeness, and infantilism.
Autor artykułu, wykorzystując koncepcję pamięci wielokierunkowej Michaela Rothberga, udowadnia, że w poezji Haliny Poświatowskiej pamięć o Zagładzie uaktywnia się w konfrontacji z obrazami medialnymi wojny w Wietnamie. W utworach poetki pamięć o różnych formach ludobójstw jest dynamiczna, dzięki czemu zjawiska takie jak konkurencyjność, współzawodnictwo czy dominacja form upamiętniania wybranych masowych zbrodni ustępują miejsca regule konsolidacji pamięci. Autor tropi również wątki feministyczne i dostrzega zbieżność form oporu prezentowanych przez Poświatowską z koncepcjami buntu omówionymi w pracach Judith Butler („opłakiwalność”, wulnerabilność). Zaangażowanie poetki w sprawy jej współczesne stanowi (obok kontemplacji kruchego ciała) najważniejszy temat poezji, który nie został odnotowany przez krytyków, zarzucających jej eskapizm, egotyzm, wtórność, infantylizm.

The article discusses different variants of metareflection in Julia Hartwig’s poetry, situating them against the background of a comprehensive concept of the poet’s work. The analysis of her poem Reprymenda [Reprimand] gives rise to a proposal of authotematism specific to Hartwig’s poetry, here called ‘out of the blue’ autothematism and contrasted with the concept of avant-garde poetry. This metapoetic formula is then extended to other texts in the volume Jasne niejasne [Bright Unclear], in which the mimetic aspect of literature in particular is problematised and the ethical dimension of Hartwig’s oeuvre is highlighted.

This paper reviews three books which symbolically represent a new direction in ‘minjung literature’ in the 1980s. Labor poet Park No-hae (박노해)’s collection of poems, Dawn of Labor (노동의 새벽), was popular when it was published because it was literature in the form of poetry written by a real member of the minjung who kept his identity as a worker secret by becoming a faceless poet. Song Hyo-soon (송효순)’s memoir, Road to Seoul (서울로 가는 길) records the miserable reality of factories as the subaltern writing. Park Tae-soon (박태순)’s The Land and the Minjung (국토와 민중) was reportage (reporting) literature that records his travels around the country. He shows that the history of ‘minjung’ physically exists within the country and testifies that the land was owned by the ‘minjung’. These three books reflect how ‘minjung literature’ in the 1980s testified to the ‘minjung’. Concern about how to describe and represent the ‘minjung’ shows thoughts about both the ‘minjung’ and literature. The ‘minjung’ testimonies written in a variety of literary styles cause readers to ask themselves what literature is. ‘Minjung’ poetry poetry and reportage in the 1980s can help answer this question.
Niniejszy artykuł zwraca uwagę na trzy książki, które symbolicznie rysują nowy kierunek w 'literaturze narodowej' w latach 80. wieku XX. Tomik poezji robotniczej Park No-hae zatytułowany Świt pracy zyskał popularność już z chwilą ukazania się – była to poezja napisana przez rzeczywistego przedstawiciela narodu, który ukrył swoją robotniczą tożsamość za maską bezimiennego poety. Lakonicznie zapisane wspomnienia Song Hyo-soon, zatytułowane Droga do Seulu, odnotowują nędzne realia pracy w fabrykach. Kraj i naród Park Tae-soona to przykład literatury reporterskiej, która opisuje jego podróże po kraju. Pokazuje on, że historia 'narodu' istnieje w kraju namacalnie i zaświadcza o tym, że kraj należy do 'narodu'. Te trzy dzieła przybliżają sposób, w jaki 'literatura narodowa' lat 80. wieku XX świadczyła o 'narodzie'. Troska o to, jak opisać i odzwierciedlić 'naród' ukazuje myśli zarówno o 'narodzie', jak i o 'literaturze'. Świadectwa 'narodu' ujęte w różnych stylach literackich sprawiają, że czytelnicy zadają sobie pytanie o to, czym jest 'literatura'. Poezja 'narodowa' i reportaż lat 80. minionego wieku mogą udzielić na te pytania odpowiedzi.

The body is a way of being in the world and to contemplate it. The body limits, interacts and enjoys while gender captivates and creates. Geography confines, epoch determines and circumstances may be decisive. The work exposes such aspects in the poetry of four women who belong to the same generation, but to different geographic areas. More specifically, it shows writing as a projection of the woman; the body as lyrical subject and object and hand as part and symbol of the fullness and the collapse of corporeality, especially female corporeality. The topics dealt with in the paper will be, on the one hand, how the body inhabits the world and what its relationship with the writing is, and on the other hand, the study will analyze the hand as a metonymy of the female body and the changes due to the passing of time.

The article deals with metaphors of disease in selected contemporary Polish female poets. In focus are the portrayals of disease, its symptoms and consequences for the imperfect human body. The anthropological perspective assumed in this study, which reveals the coding of human experience in a literary work, emphasises the connections between the poetics of the work and the problem of defining individual identity. The analysis leads to the following conclusions: the poets (both in lyrical poetry and other intimist writing) usually relate to conceptual metaphors motivated by the notions of object and containment (e.g. life is a container, body is an object, body is a container); other recognizable metaphors are orientational (wpaść w wilczy dół ‘fall into the pitfall’) or grounded in the notion of fire (czuję się spalona ‘I feel consumed by flames’). By modifying classic metaphors, the poets construct new cognitive perspectives. They express the feeling of isolation from the world of the healthy and the fragility of the human body as a material “prison house”. They also make attempts to regain control over it by extending the boundaries of intimacy. By studying the esthetic and epistemological aspects of metaphors in connection with an understanding of self in a situation of irreversible loss of full physical control, of fear and of bold expansion of one’s corporality, it is possible to identify individual and cultural grounding of corporality.
Celem artykułu jest omówienie wybranych utworów współczesnych polskich poetek pod kątem występujących w nich metafor maladycznych. Oglądowi podlegają figury przedstawiające chorobę, jej objawy i skutki, charakteryzujące ciało i jego ułomność. Przyjęcie antropologizującej perspektywy badania, eksponującej możliwości kodowania ludzkiego doświadczenia w dziele literackim, pozwala na zaakcentowanie związku elementów jego poetyki z problematyką definiowania jednostkowej tożsamości. Przeprowadzona analiza wybranych metafor uprawomocnia sformułowanie następujących wniosków: poetki (zarówno w utworach lirycznych, jak i tekstach intymistycznych) najczęściej nawiązują do metafor pojęciowych motywowanych kategorią przedmiotu i pojemnika (np. „życie to pojemnik”, „ciało to przedmiot”, „ciało to pojemnik”), pojawia się również metafora orientacyjna („wpaść w wilczy dół”) czy nawiązująca do żywiołu ognia („czuję się spalona”). Autorki, dokonując przetworzenia klasycznych metafor pojęciowych, konkretyzują nowe perspektywy poznawcze. Manifestują uczucie odizolowania od świata ludzi zdrowych oraz kruchość ciała, uwięzienie w jego materii. Podejmują także próby odzyskiwania nad nim podmiotowej kontroli, w tym celu projektują poszerzanie granic intymności. Procedura interpretacyjna łącząca badanie aspektu estetycznego i epistemologicznego metafory z rozumieniem siebie w sytuacji nieodwracalnej utraty sprawności, lęku i odważnego przekraczania granic własnej cielesności, akcentuje, że jest ono warunkowane doświadczeniem osobistym oraz wzorcami kulturowymi.

Poetry of priests was one of the most striking phenomena of Polish literature during the twentieth century. But it is surprising that priests who wrote poetry avoid direct description of experience of the priesthood. It seems that poetry of Janusz St. Pasierb is good example of such hiding identity of priest. In this article problem priesthood in literary output of Pasierb has been examined in several contexts: autobiographical, sociological, psychological, historical, theological. In his essays Pasierb devotes much space to analyzing the situation of a priest in the modern world. However, in poetry he writes about the problem of loneliness of priest and his social exclusion. A priest is the “other” in social meaning. The reason for exclusion is ambivalence of identity: state of suspension between heaven and earth, the sacred and the profane, between what is divine and what is human. At the experience of the priest reveals a fear of split and dualistic identity and fear of incompleteness. The poet also draws attention to the experience of internal injury.

Essay writing by Bolesław Leśmian, a graduate of law, draws attention not only to the presence of the philosophical or sociological context but also the legal one while his poetry seems to be completely detached from legal practice. The issue of legal protection of values represented by life is depicted in the interpretation of two dissimilar poetic works, namely the ballad Asoka from the volume Łąka (The Meadow) and the poem starting with the words “Przez śnieżycę, co wyjąc powiększa przestworza” from Dziejba leśna (Forest Happenings). Aśoka, a monarch and lawmaker in ancient India, guaranteed it in his addresses. It paths the way to the spiritual for the hero of many legends. In the 20th century the value of human life is guarded by “a representative of law”, uniformed police officer whose very presence in the street prevents robbery. In both cases life is treated by Leśmian as the highest value motivated metaphysically, which opens the way for further reflections concerning the grandeur of law as understood by the poet as well as to the question whether the issue of connections between literature and law, already known from the research into the literary output of Franz Kafka, may help understand Bolesław Leśmian’s outlook on life.
W eseistyce Bolesława Leśmiana, absolwenta studiów prawniczych, zwraca uwagę nie tylko obecność kontekstu filozoficznego czy socjologicznego, ale także prawnego, podczas gdy jego poezja wydaje się całkowicie odległa od zagadnień prawa. W zaproponowanej w artykule interpretacji dwóch niepodobnych utworów poetyckich, ballady Asoka z tomu Łąka i wiersza o incipicie „Przez śnieżycę, co wyjąc powiększa przestworza” z tomu Dziejba leśna, ukazana zostaje kwestia prawnej ochrony wartości, jaką stanowi życie. Władca i prawodawca starożytnych Indii, Aśoka, zagwarantował ją w swoich orędziach. Bohaterowi licznych legend otwiera to drogę do tego, co duchowe. W XX wieku wartości ludzkiego życia strzeże „przedstawiciel prawa”, umundurowany policjant, którego sama obecność na ulicy udaremnia rozbój. W obu przypadkach życie traktowane jest przez Leśmiana jako najwyższa wartość, motywowana metafizycznie, co otwiera drogę do dalszych rozważań dotyczących wzniosłości prawa w rozumieniu poety, a także do pytania, czy zagadnienie związków literatury i prawa, znane z badań nad twórczością Franza Kafki, może pomóc w zrozumieniu światopoglądu Bolesława Leśmiana.

Opis:
W artykule wyodrębniony zostaje opis autotematyczny jako technika metapoetyckiej refleksji, z jednej strony odniesiona do strukturalistycznej teorii opisu, z drugiej – do praktyki poetyckiej kobiet, w której metarefleksja jest ważnym, ale niedostatecznie omówionym zjawiskiem. Stosowane przez poetki zabiegi autotematyczne nakierowane są często nie tyle na problematyzowanie poetyckiego medium, mającego wywołać Barthes’owski „efekt rzeczywistości”, ile na samopoznanie podmiotu i konstruowanie indywidualnych projektów epistemologicznych. Przykładowo przywołana zostaje poezja Wisławy Szymborskiej, Julii Hartwig, Bogumiły Latawiec i Haliny Poświatowskiej, a osobną interpretację zyskuje wiersz Joanny Pollakówny.
The article discusses autothematic description as a technique of metapoetic reflection. On the one hand, it is analyzed in the context of the structuralist theory of description and on the other hand, in the context of poetry by women, where meta-reflection is an important but underresearched phenomenon. Many poets use autothematic writing not because they want to problematize the poetic medium, which is to create Barthes’s “reality effect,” but because they want to construct their individual epistemological projects and inform the speaking “I.” I analyze poems by Wisława Szymborska, Julia Hartwig, Bogumiła Latawiec and Halina Poświatowska and interpret a poem by Joanna Pollakówna anew.

Opis:
Emily Dickinson was not married nor had children, she did not establish a family, but she had a life filled to the brim with love, friendship, suffering, death, searching for God and, of course, writing poems about all these fundamental phenomena of human existence. Her poetry reveals a picture of a woman who is unusually spiritually rich, beautiful and…unhappy, living for the bigger part of her mature existence like a hermit, oftentimes being a witness of deaths of those to whom she was closest. Additionally, perhaps because of her Sapphic inclination, she could experience suffering being forced to suppress it and feeling social isolation or exclusion. On the other hand, any reader of poems by “the nun of Amherst” can sense a great blast of happiness and some ecstatic delight over the existence itself and… the possibility of expressing this delight in poems. Just life itself and poetry were the greatest passions of Dickinson among many others which profusely filled her psyche. Indeed, it is difficult to assess which of these two infatuations was stronger. That is why I used in the title of my essay a neologism: “life-writing” (“życiopisanie”), which was some time ago first employed by the Polish poet Edward Stachura in reference to his own life and poetry. Terence Davies’s movie about Emily Dickinson and her life is a real masterpiece in which the weave of the two main  passions Dickinson had, their interpenetration, their ardent intimacy or simply  indissolubility and unity have been shown in a deliciously suggestive way. The essay is a modest attempt at using such a way of describing things.

Artykuł omawia twórczość poetycką polsko-kanadyjskiego pisarza Wacława Iwaniuka na przykładzie Evenings on Lake Ontario [Wieczory nad jeziorem Ontario], jedynego anglojęzycznego tomu pisarza. Celem szkicu jest naświetlenie wyjątkowości i ważności tomu w interpretacji obrazu Kanady oraz omówieniu twórczości Iwaniuka jako poety polsko-kanadyjskiego pogranicza. Analiza tomu i poszczególnych utworów wpleciona jest w tło północnoamerykańskiego dyskursu przyrodopisarskiego, w celu podjęcia próby opisu posko-kanadyjskiej tożsamości w dziele Wacława Iwaniuka.
The article focuses on the poetry of Polish-Canadian writer Wacław Iwaniuk in his only volume in English Evenings on Lake Ontario [Wieczory nad jeziorem Ontario]. The aim of the essay is to highlight the book's distinctness and importance in the interpretation and discussion of the image of Canada in Iwaniuk's poems, tackling the question of his position in the actual and metaphorical Polish-Canadian borderlands. The analysis of the volume and its individual poems is woven into the background of the North American nature-writing discourse in an attempt to describe the Polish-Canadian identity in the work of Wacław Iwaniuk.
