    The article raises the issue of the existence of Ukrainian poetic/lyric dramaturgy. Based on the example of the analysis of lyric-intimate symbolist dramaturgical sketches by O. Oles’, it is proved that the characteristic features of such types of works are the lyric self-expression of the hero resulting from poetic speech, the incredible tenseness of monologues and dialogues, intensification of inner psychological conflict, reduction and erosion of the plot pattern of events, extension of theatricality and the emotional perception of the world and the mental condition of the dramatis personae, et cetera. For clarification of such dramaturgy of the writer, typologically similar plays by other Ukrainian and foreign authors are given.

    Three one-act plays – The Elevator, The Rebellion and The Freud – written by Wiesław Gorecki are analysed in the paper. These plays were premiered in 1934 by a theatre group Mikroscena, founded by Tadeusz Kudliński. In my opinion, Wiesław Gorecki’s dramas are examples of modern aesthetics (as defined by Richard Sheppard). We can read these works as a poetic drama (The Elevator), the Ibsenesque psychological theatre (The Fraud) and a game with scenic illusion in the style of Pirandello (The Rebellion). Finally, I created a new term for Goreckis’ plays: “miniature, light and bourgeois modernism”.

    This article is a critical reappraisal of Juliusz Słowacki’s translation of Calderón’s El príncipe constant (1843), which acquired a place of its own in Słowacki’s oeuvre and continued to attract a lot of interest throughout the 20th century. Its lasting appeal is due to its extraordinary unity of tone, dramatic construction and stylized language, which in effect, as some critics have said, out-Baroques Calderón’s Baroque original. This article analyzes this contention in detail and tries to answer the question what were the sources and reasons of Słowacki’s fascination with the 17-th century Spanish poet and playwright. The second part of the article deals with two of the 20th-century stage productions of the drama and the adapters’ handling of Słowacki’s text. The summary includes a brief survey of the treatment Calderón’s heirs accorded to his key trope perigrinatio vitae (‘life is pilgrimage’).

    Księga psa Mariusza Bielińskiego i Pies Jarosława Jakubowskiego to dwa teksty dramatyczne, które w oryginalny sposób ukazują relacje między człowiekiem i zwierzęciem. W obu sztukach pies jest samoistnym bytem, „gatunkiem stowarzyszonym” z człowiekiem (Haraway), „członkiem wspólnoty rodzinnej” (Baratay) i „zoe-egalitarystycznej” wspólnoty w znaczeniu, jakie nadaje temu pojęciu współczesny posthumanizm (Braidotti). Autor eseju odwołuje się do tych kategorii, by je następnie przekroczyć, badając metafizyczną koncepcję ludzko-zwierzęcych relacji ukazaną w dramatach. Podejmowana przez bohaterów Bielińskiego i Jakubowskiego retrospekcja przyjmuje postać pisarsko-egzystencjalnego obrządku żałobnego po zmarłym psie i prowadzi do głębokiej przemiany ich świadomości. Poprzez zderzenie losu cierpiącego zwierzęcia z historią Męki Pańskiej obaj pisarze dekonstruują spetryfikowane prawdy wiary chrześcijańskiej, odnawiając je i włączając w przestrzeń własnego doświadczenia i własnego dyskursu. Dlatego w interpretacji dramatów perspektywa ekologiczna została połączona z teologiczną. Autor odwołuje się do koncepcji „teologii zwierząt” Linzeya (ofiara Jezusa Chrystusa jako wzór międzygatunkowych relacji), a następnie, podążając za myślą Gadamera i Lévinasa, stawia tezę, że osią obu utworów jest hermeneutyczne pytanie o to, czy „duchowy dystans”, jaki w naszej epoce powstał między Bogiem a ludźmi, człowiek nowoczesny może pokonać, zwracając się w stronę zwierzęcia, by „przyswoić sobie” jego „obcość”, która otworzy go na „obcość” Boga.
    Mariusz Bielinski’s Księga Psa (The Book of Dog) and Jarosław Jakubowski’s Pies (The Dog) are two dramatic texts portraying the relationship between humans and animals in an original way. In both plays, the dog is an entity in its own right, a representative of the “companion species” to the human being (Haraway), “member of the family group” (Baratay) and the “zoe-egalitarian” community as understood in contemporary posthumanism (Braidotti). The author of the essay evokes these categories and then transcends them by exploring the metaphysical concept of human-animal relations depicted in the plays under discussion. Bieliński’s and Jakubowski’s protagonists turn to retrospective, which takes the form of writerly and existential mourning rite for a dead dog, leading to a profound transformation of their consciousness. By juxtaposing the fate of the suffering animal with the Passion of Christ, both authors deconstruct the petrified truths of Christian faith, renewing and incorporating them into the space of their own experience and discourse. Therefore, the proposed interpretation of the dramas combines the ecological perspective with theology. The author refers to Linzey’s concept of “animal theology” (the sacrifice of Jesus Christ as a model of interspecies relations) and posits, drawing on Gadamer and Lévinas, that both plays are centred around the hermeneutical question of whether the “spiritual distance” that has arisen between God and humans in our era can be overcome by modern humanity by turning towards the animal in order to “assimilate” its “strangeness” and thus open up to the “strangeness” of God.

    Paul Valéry (1871–1945), the great French poet and essayist, did not finished his last work Mon Faust, however it was published after his death. It is poetic and philosophical drama in two parts. The story of the eponymous hero takes place in our times. Unlike in Johann Wolfgang Goethe,s Faust, the devil, not a man, is here tempted. It is obvious, because for Valéry the devil is not attractive enough to be the tempter par excellence. The unknown God is probably absent in the modern world, whereas man is lonely, tormented uncertainty. Mon Faust has not been translated into Polish, however, it is performed in theaters around the world from time to time.

    Artykuł koncentruje się na przedstawieniu prac teatrologicznych Ireny Sławińskiej (1913–2004), wybitnej humanistki przez ponad pół wieku związanej z Katolickim Uniwersytetem Lubelskim, współtwórczyni polskich badań nad dramatem i teatrem. Omówiono jej badania nad językiem dramatu, dramatem poetyckim i religijnym oraz propozycje metodologiczne dotyczące analizy, antropologii i filozofii dramatu i teatru. Scharakteryzowano rolę Sławińskiej w budowaniu relacji między polską teatrologią a badaniami prowadzonymi na Zachodzie, zwłaszcza w kręgu języka angielskiego i francuskiego. Podkreślono oryginalny wkład uczonej w analizę antropologicznych podstaw wizji teatru odwołującej się do filozofii klasycznej i do chrześcijaństwa.
      This article presents the theater scholarship of Irena Sławińska (1913–2004), an eminent humanist affiliated with the Catholic University of Lublin for more than five decades, co-founder of Polish drama and theater studies. The author discusses Sławińska’s research on the language of drama, poetic and religious drama, as well as her methodological proposals for drama and theater analysis, anthropology, and philosophy. The article also describes the scholar’s role in developing relations between Polish and Western theatre studies, especially with regard to Anglo- and Francophone research, and highlights her original contribution to the analysis of anthropological foundations of the idea of theater that refers to classical philosophy and Christianity.

    Artykuł jest recenzją naukową książki: Dramaty Cypriana Norwida. Teksty – konteksty – interteksty, red. naukowa W. Rzońca, K. Samsel, Warszawa 2019. Autorka dokonuje przeglądu i interpretacji zamieszczonych w książce studiów, sytuując je na tle aktualnego stanu badań nad dramaturgią Norwida. Recenzja ukazuje wartość książki, polegającą przede wszystkim na prezentacji nowych odczytań Norwidowskiego dramatu ‒ przez pryzmat nowych kontekstów i z różnorodnych perspektyw badawczych: filologicznej, teatrologicznej, tekstologiczno-edytorskiej, estetycznej, antropologicznej, kulturologicznej, komparatystycznej. Książka jest też głosem w sprawie miejsca dramaturgii Norwida w procesie literackim, bowiem w większości opublikowanych w niej prac wyeksponowany został ścisły związek pisarza z literaturą i kulturą premodernizmu lub modernizmu. W związku z tym podjęta została w recenzji kwestia znaczenia tradycji dramatu romantycznego dla specyfiki postawy twórczej Norwida-dramaturga.
    The article is an academic review of the multi-author monograph Dramaty Cypriana Norwida. Teksty – konteksty – interteksty [Cyprian Norwid’s dramatic works: texts, contexts and intertexts] edited by Wiesław Rzońca and Karol Samsel (Warszawa: Wydawnictwo Wydziału Polonistyki, 2019). It surveys and examines studies contained in the volume, placing them in the context of current state of research on Norwid’s dramatic works. The review argues that the chief merit of the discussed book consists primarily in presenting new interpretations of Norwid’s dramas, which account for fresh contexts and represent a variety of research angles, including philology, textology and scientific editing, studies of theatre, aesthetics, anthropology as well as cultural and comparative studies. The volume also reconsiders the place of Norwid’s dramatic works in literary history, most chapters foregrounding the strong relationship this author had with the literature and culture of pre-modernism and modernism. Owing to this, the review also addresses the meaning of the Romantic drama tradition for Norwid’s specific artistic position as a dramatist.

    This article attempts to reinterpret the symbolist character of the adapted poetic cycle of M.K. Sarbiewski – Sylviludia dithyrambica (written 1637, published 1757) – and its relationship to the original work of Mario Bettini – Ludovicus, tragicum sylviludium (1612, published 1622). The new interpretation has given up the absolute method based on philological study and versification hitherto applied to explain the relationships between these two literary works, and consequently has rejected the conclusion which says that the work written by the Polish author is entirely repetitive, can be even considered a sort of plagiarism. This article has adopted anthropological and intertextual perspective to discuss the parallels between the two texts, their contexts, and aesthetic and ideological functions. It provides a wider range of possible interpretations of the genesis and semiotics of the Polish work. The author reveals cultural links between the Italian work adapted to Polish conditions and the European tradition woven around the Christian-national ethos of Europe and the idea of the king who takes up the ethos and constitutes its law and values on the territories under his control. In this historical and mythical space, the figure of ruler – in the Polish version King Vladislav IV – enters into relations of the cosmic harmony of beings and elements spinning around him. This approach brings poetic conceptualization and spiritualization of the visions of the nature of monistic qualities, and sacralization of the nature in the motherland and its territorial concretization. In this light, the Polish adaptation provides the affirmation and aestheticization of North-Eastern outskirts of Poland which adopted by Polish romantic poets (Adam Mickiewicz) became one of the models of poetry of the North – Lithuanian lakes, rivers and forests.

    Artykuł prezentuje nieopublikowany tekst Ireny Sławińskiej Dramat imaginacyjny Stanisława Wyspiańskiego, pochodzący prawdopodobnie z roku 1938. Przywołane zostały możliwe źródła inspiracji oraz najważniejsze kroki badawcze, jakie wykonała Sławińska, rekonstruując imaginacyjną poetykę dramatów Wyspiańskiego (Protesilas i Laodamia, Legion, Wesele, Noc listopadowa, Wyzwolenie, Akropolis, Sędziowie). Jej analiza objęła koncepcję przestrzeni, konstrukcję postaci, dialogi, funkcję chórów i didaskaliów, by pokazać, że cechą konstytutywną poetyki imaginacyjnej Wyspiańskiego jest zasada zacierania granicy między światem wizyjnym i realnym poprzez ich strukturalne powiązanie, przy jednoczesnym podkreślaniu ich zasadniczej odrębności. Sławińska przesunęła też moment ukształtowania się wizji nowego teatru Wyspiańskiego na rok 1895. W artykule zasygnalizowano, które wątki jej niepublikowanego tekstu mogą stanowić dziś inspirację dla dalszych badań nad twórczością Wyspiańskiego.
    This article presents an unpublished text by Irena Sławińska: Dramat imaginacyjny Stanisława Wyspiańskiego [Stanisław Wyspiański’s Drama of Imagination], probably dating from 1938. It discusses Sławińska’s possible sources of inspiration and her most important research steps in reconstructing the imaginative poetics of Wyspiański’s dramas (Protesilas i Laodamia, Legion, Wesele [The Wedding], Noc listopadowa [November Night], Wyzwolenie [Liberation], Akropolis, Sędziowie [The Judges]). Based on an analysis of Wyspiański’s concept of space, character construction, dialogue, and the function of the choruses and stage directions, Sławińska argues that a constitutive feature of his poetics of imagination was the principle of blurring the border between the world of vision and the real world by interlinking them structurally, while at the same time emphasizing their fundamental separateness. Sławińska also reassesses the chronology of the formation of Wyspiański’s vision of new theater, proposing that it should be dated from 1895. The article indicates the elements of the unpublished text that today may serve as an inspiration for further research on Wyspiański’s work.

    This paper deals with the definition and characteristics of poetic drama, and attempts to clarify the significance of poetic drama works during the time when the poetic drama movement took place. Unlike drama-poetry or plays, poetic drama is an independent art genre. It presents artistic vision through the conflict of poetics and dramas. The unity of poetic and dramatic things, which is facilitated through music, internal necessity, stage image, sound effect, and visual auditory indication, poetic drama is a part of complex art. The entire work functions as a poem and must be realized on the stage. For Choi Il-soo, in order to develop the characteristics of these poetry plays, the innatrhythm of the free verse should be embodied within these plays. He accepted Eliot’s theory and tried to establish the position that Western poetic drama works and theories are unique to Korea. This deepening perception of theory led to a poetic drama movement with the creators. In this paper, we classify its characteristics by focusing on approximately 18 poetic drama works. From 1920 to 1999, 18 representative works were classified, focusing on the completeness of the works and the remarkable artists. The characteristics of works can largely be divided into historical, narrative, reality, and philosophy. The meaning of this classification can serve as an opportunity for poetic dramas to advance into more diverse topics or forms. The poetic drama movement was dominated by critics and poets with the aim of pursuing independent Korean art works, and although it failed in performance and popularization, it was an achievement of the times to give a glimpse into the possibility of poetic drama. Poetic drama can act as a new element in the genre of poetry and drama that are losing original literary character, and there is a need to revive in Korean literature.
    Niniejszy artykuł mierzy się z próbą definicji i charakterystyki dramatu poetyckiego, jak i usiłuje ustalić znaczenie dzieł dramatycznych w czasie funkcjonowania ruchu dramatu poetyckiego. W przeciwieństwie do sztuk czy poezji dramatycznej, dramat poetycki jest odrębnym gatunkiem. Wizja artystyczna jest uwidaczniana w konflikcie poetyki i dramatu. Jedność poetyki i dramatu, osiągana przez muzykę, wewnętrzny przymus, obraz sceniczny efekty dźwiękowe, wizualne odniesienia publiczności sprawiają, że dramat poetycki jest częścią sztuki ujmowanej kompleksowo. Całe dzieło funkcjonuje jak poemat i musi być realizowane na scenie. Zdaniem Choi Il-soo, by rozwinąć opis tych sztuk poetyckich należy zachować w nich wewnętrzne zasady wolnego wiersza. Przyjął on więc koncepcję Eliota i podjął próbę opracowania podstaw zakładających, że zachodnie dramaty poetyckie oraz teorie są atypowe dla Korei. Ten pogłębiający się odbiór teorii doprowadził do wykształcenia się ruchu dramatu poetyckiego, W artykule dokonana zostanie klasyfikacja cech charakterystycznych na podstawie około 18 dzieł dramatycznych. Wybrane osiemnaście dzieł, które powstałe w latach 1920-1999 sklasyfikowano według kryterium ukończenia i pełności pracy jak i ze względu na uznanie artysty. Opisy dzieł mogą być ogólnie podzielone na historyczne, narracyjne, realistyczne i filozoficzne. Klasyfikacja ta może stać się punktem wyjścia dla dramatów poetyckich do przekształcenia w bardziej zróżnicowane formy lub tematy. Ruch dramatu poetyckiego został zdominowany przez krytyków i poetów, których głównym celem było popularyzowanie niezależnych dzieł sztuki koreańskiej, i mimo, że nie zyskał on wielu odbiorców ani na popularności, to uznaje się go za znaczne osiągnięcie ówczesności, pozwalające na wgląd w możliwości dramatów poetyckich. Mogą one być traktowane jako nowy element w gatunkach lirycznych i dramatycznych, tracących swój pierwotny charakter literacki a które należy odzyskać w literaturze koreańskiej.
