Opis:
The article presents linguistic phenomena from the initial stage of the poet’s work when the modernist writing model prevailed. Leopold Staff wrote a reflexive and descriptive triptych in which, by resorting to a juxtaposition to the Young Poland movement poetry, he created paradise landscapes of a deserted island surrounded by sea water, drowned in light and colour. In order to recreate the protagonist’s dreams he resorted to poetic imagery at various levels of text organization. The linguistic phenomena in the realm of syntactic forms refer to the functions of exclamations, hypotaxis and parataxis, the role of arrangements of conjugation rows, the rhythm of verses combined in a hendecasyllable with ABBA rhymes. The following figures of speech were used: antithesis, rhetoric questions, inversions, apostrophes etc. As for semantic transformations, an important role was played by sensual and mental metaphors, semantic poetism, personification and comparisons. The lexical phenomena were related to applying the style-related function of vocabulary that is chronologically diverse (artistic neologisms, neo-semantisms, old-fashioned words); geographically diverse (dialects) and word-formation diverse (derivatives of adpositional phrases in order to condense the text to hendecasyllable verses).

The article was written on the occasion of the 1000th birthday of Blessed Herman of Reichenau. It features his brief biography and accomplishments. He is shown as a monk, chronicler, mathematician, astronomer and musician. The figure of this extremely talented and hard-working Benedictine, who struggled with many serious diseases all his life, is today a sign of contradiction to the phenomenon of euthanasia.

Two poets mourning the death of their poet friends are Sepehri and Spencer in different contexts of Iran and England. The two poets who are dead are Forough and Sidney who have been great poets and have been admired by the mourning poets. To remember their friends, they have written poems to enliven the memory of their dead friends. Sepehri considers Forough, a female Iranian poet, a friend and a great poet. The methodology of this article is based on comparative literature with the emphasis on American school of comparative literature which considers aesthetics and attention to critique and analysis. This school regards literature as a universal phenomenon and in relation to other branches of human knowledge and fine arts. This school does not accept any boundaries in the field of comparative literature and believes in the study of literature as a whole, and compares literature with other arts and human sciences. The followers of this school believe that comparative literature is a method that broadens the view of man in the study of literary works and is an approach to go beyond national boundaries and believe the study of literary phenomena is between two or more different literatures or the study of the relation between a literary phenomenon and various sciences

Opis:
The article discusses the opera-ballad Powrót taty (Father’s return) in a musical edition by Henryk Jarecki with a libretto by Jan Gołębiowski. Its goal is to present the manners of building the character and the narrative. Apart from the characteristic features of a ballad, the text also discusses the category of an oral poet, a “storyteller” and the dialogue relation (“speaking” instead of “talking”.) These are the means that gave Mickiewicz’s ballad a new dimension. Helpful in its reception are texts on cultural practices, especially those referring to oral culture (compare with e.g. Jack Goody, Albert B. Lord, Eric A. Havelock, Walter J. Ong.).

Opis:
There are analysed in the article writings of the Ukrainian poet Borys Necherda (1939-1998). He was the original writer of the generation of 1960th and made brave experiments with the artistic word. Necherda as an author balanced between the official literature and the literature of the underground. There are a lot of unconventional features in his poems such as colloquial vocabulary, elements of slang, journalism, mixing of discourses and various means of rhetoric. That was a reason that Necherda’s writings were not appreciated during his life. Only nowadays after the poet’s death we have the possibility to re-read it from new points of view. This writings evidence a process of vanguard experimenting. In an original way they present a local peculiarity of a place: the poet become the voice of the „Odessa beaumond”, choosing masks for his lyrical subject.

The main subject of the review is Mykola Ilnytskyi’s book Reading and Re-reading…, which is very important research on Ukrainian literature in contemporary humanities. The book includes four chapters in all of which fundamental interests of the researcher are described. Mykola Ilnytskyi reviews the classic texts of Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko ( chapter 1 ), and the literature of the first part of the 20th century ( chapter 2 ), as well as contemporary texts ( chapters 3, 4 ). This book is not an extensive view of the history of literature of the 20th century. Its main peculiarity is the delivery of important fragments and episodes of literary history. The essays combine a liberal understanding of the subject and an unobtrusive interpretation of the texts, which reflects the unique ethical culture of the researcher. Mykola Ilnytskyi is clearly aware of the multiplicity of meanings offered byfiction, and therefore does not insist on his own right to the truth, but only offers well-founded and personally verified versions of literary plots.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to show the affinities of S ong o f M y self by Walt Whitman, an American Romantic poet, with the classical epic poem, on the basis of the theory of genre evolution propounded by such Polish scholars as Ireneusz Opacki, Michał Głowiński and Andrzej Zgorzelski. The first part discusses the status of S ong o f M y self as an epic poem as it is perceived by American literary historians. Then the extensive analysis of the poem’s elements and devices is conducted, pointing to their roots in the classical epic. However, the dominant tendency in the poem is the strategy of simultaneous evocation and subversion of the epic tradition. As a result, S ong o f M y self emerges as an innovative poem, a precursor to the later Modernist ‘long poems’, and serves as the link between the classical epic poem and the extended poetic works or sequences of the twentieth century. In the final analysis, the role of S ong o f M y self is seen to consist in harking back to the tradition of classical epics on the one hand, and in its radical modification, and thus it seems to launch a new poetic genre.

Opis:
The article is based on the author’s personal and long-year experience gathered while observing and living the life in India. The text addresses the problems and struggles of elites of a society on the crossroads of various civilisations. In addition, it touches upon often contradictory visions of the world and social order, which does not prevent any of them from finding space to perfect specific aspects of spiritual life. In India, we can see very clearly how two planes and two levels of Indian culture – the philosophy of life and the art of life – cross and, at the same time, blend with each other. The most general aspect of these considerations results from the common essence that permeates Indian culture and skills of co-existence. Its contributions to global culture are: a unique view, cognition and evaluation of the world. It also added a more profound interest in mankind than in other cultures, supported by the intellectual effort to explore what conditions its being, and what can decondition that being. As a result of that interest, deepened throughout dozens of centuries, the Indian philosophy proposes a notion of the human being that is wider than in the European tradition. Moreover, it also advances methods and techniques of upbringing of the young generation so that it would manifest a conscious attitude to the tradition and art of life in the broadest meaning of the word, and be able to build a balance between the self – the microworld – and the macroworld in a peaceful and disciplined manner.

Opis:
The outstanding Belarusian poet, novelist and playwright, Uladzimir Karatkiewicz (1930-1984) was a great enthusiast of Polish history, culture and literature. Proposed for readers’ consideration is the article, which includes confessions of this Belarusian artist that he shared with me during the many meetings in Belarus and Poland. The Belarusian writer placed Polish and Belarusian realities side by side with enormous openness and honesty. Karatkiewicz did not hide his recognition, and even admiration of attitude, of such Polish folklorists as Jan Czeczot, Jan Barszczewski, Aleksander Rypiński, Oskar Kolberg, Kazimierz Moszyński, Zygmunt Gloger, Czeslaw Pietkiewicz and Michal Federowski, who devoted many years of their lives to the collection and analysis of Belarusian folklore. Karatkiewicz strongly wished that Belarusians became similar to Poles in their attachment to their own history, language, and took from them their consistent quest for sovereignty and independence of their own country.
