Opis:
Of the 30 extant orders of insects, scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) have one of the best fossil records among insects that probably extends to the early Mesozoic. Most fossil Coccoidea records are of adult males which have been trapped in amber, whereas adult females are less common, probably because of their sedentary occurrence on plants. Descriptions, photos, and SEM micrographs are presented of over 250 well−preserved scale covers of adult females and nymphal stages of armoured scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea: Diaspididae) which were found on dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous fossil leaves in Middle Eocene deposits from Germany. The structure of these fossil scale covers closely agrees with that of extant Diaspididae. These armoured scale insects belong to the subfamily Aspidiotinae. The age of this insect−plant association—47 to 44 million−year−old—indicates that the Diaspididae have a long history in the Palaearctic region.

Opis:
Arginase (EC 3.5.3.1) catalyses biodegradation of L-arginine to L‑ornithine and urea. The aim of the study was to determine changes in arginase activity within seedlings of winter triticale caused by Sitobion avenae feeding. Obtained results showed an increase in the arginase activity within shoots of winter triticale seedlings susceptible Tornado cv and decrease in less susceptible Witon cv after 24 h of the grain aphid feeding. Further aphid feeding caused decrease in activity of the enzyme within shoots of the both studied cultivars and final induction after two weeks of feeding. In the roots of Tornado cv the enzyme activity decreased during the first week of the aphid feeding and slightly increased after two weeks. However, in analogous parts of the Witon cv seedlings settled by S. avenae an increase in arginase activity was observed after 24 h and decrease after one week was noticed. Importance of the arginase in interactions between the winter triticale and S. avenae is discussed.

Opis:
Plant communities which form orchard edges are a vital element of ecological infrastructure enriching these agrocenoses. The research was conducted in an orchard environment made up of apple orchards and their edges in the form of agricultural cultivations, tree clumps and a road lined with trees and shrubberies. The study aim was to determine the impact of the orchard edge plant diversity onto the number and abundance of Ichneumonidae subfamilies in the orchards. The study showed that orchard environments made up of an apple orchard and edge plants of various species create better living conditions for Ichneumonidae parasitoids than the environment of an orchard and neighbouring agricultural cultivations. The diversity of orchard edge plants positively influences the abundance of the Ichneumonidae subfamilies rather than the number of subfamilies in the orchard. In the orchard habitat the following dominant subfamilies were found: Campopleginae, Cryptinae, Orthocentrinae and Pimplinae. These entomophages may control the abundance of pests infesting orchards.
