    The aim of the article is to characterize the perception of exotic plants in Poland – the process of their demostication in the cultural and social senses. As an example for the analysis, cocoa was selected. In the introduction, the mechanisms of constructing the concept of exotica were described. Then, the changes in the cultural significance of cocoa from pre-colonial times to the present were discussed. In the following part, the perception of cocoa cultivation in Poland was outlined.

    Celem artykułu jest prześledzenie współczesnych praktyk teoretycznych, które służą ponownemu zawiązaniu „kontraktu z roślinami”, oraz wskazanie tych wątków w obrębie intensywnie rozwijających się w dwóch ostatnich dekadach krytycznych studiów nad roślinami, których genealogii należy szukać w paradygmacie studiów feministycznych. W tym podejściu namysłowi krytycznemu ujawniającemu semiotyczne i materialne formy opresji w stosunku do roślin towarzyszą próby wypracowania praktyk reparacyjnych. Autorka śledzi historyczne formy deprecjonowania istot roślinnych, zarówno w polu teorii i filozofii, jak i w praktykach politycznych, społecznych i ekonomicznych. Kluczowe dla jej rozstrzygnięć są: zdefiniowanie specyficznej „podmiotowości” roślinnej, uznanie materialnej sprawczości roślin, włączenie do rozważań biopolitycznych zasady wegetalnej, a także rozważenie intersekcjonalnych uwikłań roślin w kontekście botaniki kolonialnej i polityki nasiennej. Autorka wskazuje, że w każdym z omawianych przypadków specyfika feministycznych studiów nad roślinami opiera się na rozpoznaniu ontologicznego i politycznego statusu rośliny, czego konsekwencją są uważność i troska, dbałość o widzialność i dobrostan konkretnych, materialnych i ucieleśnionych istot roślinnych będących dalekimi krewnymi gatunku ludzkiego.
    The aim of the article is to track the contemporary theoretical practices that serve to re-establish the ‘plant contract’ and to situate these threads within the field of critical plant studies. The genealogy of this subject area, which has developed rapidly over the last two decades, should be sought in the paradigm of feminist studies. In this approach, critical reflection revealing semiotic and material forms of oppression towards plants is accompanied by attempts to develop reparative practices. The author traces the historical forms of depreciation of plant beings, both in theory and philosophy and in political, social and economic practices. Key to her decisions are: defining the specific plant ‘subjectivity’, recognizing the material agency of plants, incorporating the principle of vegetation into biopolitical considerations, as well as considering the intersectional entanglements of plants in the context of colonial botany and seed politics. The author points out that in each of the discussed cases, the specificity of feminist plant studies is based on the recognition of the ontological and political status of the plant, which results in attentiveness and care. This care is focused on the visibility and well-being of specific, material and embodied plant beings that are distant relatives of the human species.

    The article is devoted to Józef Wittlin’s text “Ogródek” i historia [“The Garden” and History] (1938), which has not been discussed so far and which was intended as a review of the translation of Walafrid Strabus’s poem Hortulus. In the analysis of this text, the author not only indicates the features characteristic of Wittlin’s works, but also puts his considerations into the broad context of philosophical and botanical findings concerning the life of plants, their functioning in relation to man and historical significance. Thus, the article is an attempt to reconstruct Wittlin’s plant history, which is a precursor to the latest research in biology, as well as ecocritical and posthumanist movements in philosophy and literary studies.

    The aim of this article is a critical revision of the dominant philosophical conceptualization of plants. The author deconstructs the tradition of describing plants in metaphysical and anthropocentric categories by deploying a set of tropes and strategies from the toolkit of deconstruction and phenomenology. While considering the 'plant-being', he formulates an alternative concept of 'plant-thinking', whose distinctive features are non-identity, voicelessness, non-essentionality and existence outside any symbol system. Conceptualized in these categories the plant not only defies the received discourse of metaphysics but also becomes a stepping stone and a most important figure of post-metaphysical thought.

    Humanistyka i nauki społeczne długo były niewrażliwe na rośliny, nie dostrzegając ich znaczenia i wartości w naszym życiu, co bywa określane mianem ślepoty na rośliny. W związku z tym, iż subtelne życie roślin rozgrywa się poza ludzką percepcją, zwykle pozostaje ono niedostrzegalne i tym samym nieobecne w naszej świadomości. Postrzeganie roślin jako pozbawionych ruchu lokuje je na najniższych poziomach bytów. Swoją widzialność zyskują one dopiero wtedy, gdy w świecie człowieka pojawiają się jako źródło pokarmu, lek, materiał budowlany, czy dekoracja. Celem artykułu było zwrócenie uwagi na praktyki kulturowe związane z roślinami, nasze relacjami z nimi, aby dostrzec międzygatunkową zależność oraz co nie mniej istotne, konieczność rozwijania studiów nad roślinami. Wychodząc naprzeciw temu wyzwaniu, tekst ten stara się zrehabilitować długoterminową nieobecność roślin w dyskursie humanistycznym, uwalniając je od antropocentrycznej izolacji. Artykuł stanowi rozprawę o charakterze metateoretycznym i metadyscyplinarnym, i czerpie z dorobku plant studies w obrębie kulturoznawstwa, socjologii oraz filozofii. Tekst wprowadza w problematykę plant studies, próbując ustalić ich zakres i cel, ale także zwraca uwagę na wielowymiarowość nurtu plant studies, który funkcjonuje jako obszar badań humanistycznych oraz praktyka społeczna, redefiniująca rozumienie tego, co ludzkie i pozaludzkie. Artykuł postuluje budowanie relacji z roślinami w ontologii myśli słabej, z pełnym poszanowaniem niewyraźności i niejednoznaczności roślinnego życia.
    Humanities and social sciences have long been insensitive to plants, failing to see their importance and value in our lives, which is sometimes referred to as plant blindness. Due to the fact that the subtle life of plants takes place beyond human perception, it usually remains invisible and therefore absent from our consciousness. Perceiving plants as devoid of movement places them on the lowest levels of being. They gain their visibility only when they appear in the human world as a source of food, medicine, building material or decoration. The aim of the article was to draw attention to cultural practices related to plants, but also to our relationship with them, allowing us to see our interspecies relationship. The article draws attention to the need to expand on plant studies. In order to meet this challenge, it tries to rehabilitate the long-term absence of plants in the humanistic discourse, freeing them from anthropocentric isolation. The article is a metatheoretical and metadisciplinary dissertation, drawing on the achievements of plant studies in the field of cultural studies, sociology and philosophy. The text introduces the issues of plant studies, trying to determine their scope and purpose. The author draws attention to the multidimensionality of the plant studies trend, which functions as an area of humanities research, but also as a social practice, redefining the understanding of what is human and non-human. The article postulates building relationships with plants in the ontology of weak thought, with full respect for the vagueness and ambiguity of plant life.

    We are currently witnessing changes in the scientific perception of the world of plants. Fundamental questions raised by scientists relate to the organization of plant life and concern the way in which signals are received from both the internal and external environment, and their acceptance or rejection depending on the potential consequences for the whole plant. The traditional understanding of plants as organisms devoid of sensual nature has undergone changes in favour of the conviction that advanced processes indicating intelligent plant behaviour could actually exist. The emergence of this new paradigm of research has triggered numerous disputes and controversies, both among scientists and philosophers.

    In this study, the potential of the so-called black-box optimisation (BBO) to increase the efficiency of simulation studies in power engineering is evaluated. Three algorithms (“Multilevel Coordinate Search” (MCS) and “Stable Noisy Optimization by Branch and Fit” (SNOBFIT) by Huyer and Neumaier and “blackbox: A Procedure for Parallel Optimization of Expensive Black-box Functions” (blackbox) by Knysh and Korkolis) are implemented in MATLAB and compared for solving two use cases: the analysis of the maximum rotational speed of a gas turbine after a load rejection and the identification of transfer function parameters by measurements. The first use case has a high computational cost, whereas the second use case is computationally cheap. For each run of the algorithms, the accuracy of the found solution and the number of simulations or function evaluations needed to determine the optimum and the overall runtime are used to identify the potential of the algorithms in comparison to currently used methods. All methods provide solutions for potential optima that are at least 99.8% accurate compared to the reference methods. The number of evaluations of the objective functions differs significantly but cannot be directly compared as only the SNOBFIT algorithm does stop when the found solution does not improve further, whereas the other algorithms use a predefined number of function evaluations. Therefore, SNOBFIT has the shortest runtime for both examples. For computationally expensive simulations, it is shown that parallelisation of the function evaluations (SNOBFIT and blackbox) and quantisation of the input variables (SNOBFIT) are essential for the algorithmic performance. For the gas turbine overspeed analysis, only SNOBFIT can compete with the reference procedure concerning the runtime. Further studies will have to investigate whether the quantisation of input variables can be applied to other algorithms and whether the BBO algorithms can outperform the reference methods for problems with a higher dimensionality.

    In the study the technique of application of additives to plant materials used for production of biogas is presented. It has been found out that application of additives to materials at the time of their harvesting with collecting straw cutters is the most often used manner. From the conducted studies it results that the elements introducing the additive to fodder (sprayers, nozzles, supply ducts) of the applicator have to be located in front of the crushing rollers’ assembly, in the shredding assembly or at the end of the straw cutter’s exhaust channel.
    W pracy przedstawiono technikę aplikacji dodatków do materiałów roślinnych przeznaczonych do produkcji biogazu. Stwierdzono, że najczęściej stosowanym sposobem jest aplikacja dodatków do materiałów w czasie ich zbioru sieczkarniami zbierającymi. Z przeprowadzonych badań wynika, że elementy wprowadzające dodatek do paszy (rozpylacze, dysze, przewody doprowadzające) aplikatora mogą być umieszczone przed zespołem walców zgniatających, w zespole rozdrabniającym lub na końcu kanału wylotowego sieczkarni.

    The text tries to analyze the radical gesture of breaking with the post-communist social reality. On the example of the novel Do tmy [Into Darkness] by Anna Bolavá, the author of the article draws the socio-political landscape of the Czech Republic after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia. The main character of the book, Anna, stands out as a woman, irritates and queers the well-established space, only to finally smash it by proposing – now as a plant – a new social order (not only with people as social actors). Anna Bolavá’s novel not only diagnoses the postmodern times, with their abundance of sounds and images, but also offers a strategy how to change the reality.

    Maintaining variable operating conditions of water barrage, imposed upon the owners of hydroelectric power plants by various acts and administrative decisions, requires proper adjustment of power plant water discharge by variable opening of turbine control components. This changes the generated power and thus shifts the hydro units operating point, which alters the power generation efficiency. In power plants equipped with two or more hydro units, it is possible to configure operation of hydro units and load each of them with such active power as to obtain the best possible electrical energy generation efficiency with the available hydroelectric potential of the barrage. In this paper, the method of optimising an example multi-unit hydroelectric power plant using various criteria was described, i.e. the efficiency criterion or the revenue criterion. Particular attention was paid to the maximisation of generation efficiency to ensure the maximum use of the inflow and head available at the barrage under the restrictions due to current conditions.
    Dotrzymanie zmiennych warunków użytkowania stopnia wodnego, narzuconych właścicielom elektrowni wodnych w różnego rodzaju aktach i decyzjach administracyjnych, wymaga odpowiedniego dostosowania przełyku elektrowni poprzez zmianę stopnia otwarcia elementów regulacyjnych turbin. Skutkuje to zmianą generowanej mocy i tym samym przesunięciem punktu pracy hydrozespołów powodującym zmianę sprawności wytwarzania energii. W elektrowniach wyposażonych w dwa lub więcej hydrozespołów można tak dobrać konfigurację pracujących hydrozespołów i każdy z nich obciążyć taką mocą czynną, aby uzyskać najwyższą możliwą sprawność wytwarzania energii elektrycznej z dostępnego potencjału hydroenergetycznego stopnia wodnego. W artykule opisano sposób optymalizacji przykładowej wieloblokowej elektrowni wodnej z wykorzystaniem różnych kryteriów, tj. kryterium sprawnościowego czy też przychodowego. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono zagadnieniu maksymalizacji sprawności wytwarzania gwarantującej maksymalne wykorzystanie dopływu i spadu dostępnego na stopniu przy narzuconych ograniczeniach wynikających z aktualnych uwarunkowań.
