Opis:
Pollen concentration in the atmosphere of Vinkovci (northeastern Croatia) has been analyzed using a Hirst-type volumetric spore trap. During the year 2005, 58 pollen types were recorded with the sum of annual totals of 14,011. The pollen spectrum refl ected the fl oristic diversity of the region. Non-arboreal pollen predominantly contributed to the total pollen sum with a percentage of 81.80%. The main pollen producers characterized by allergenic pollen were: Betula, Quercus, Fraxinus, Populus, Pinus, Urticaceae, Ambrosia, Poaceae, Plantago and Artemisia. Urticaceae was the most frequent and most abundant pollen type accounting for 46.58% of the total annual pollen, followed by Ambrosia (19.66%) and Poaceae (11.01%).

Opis:
The application of phenological data together with meteorological and pollen data in a comprehensive analysis gives an opportunity to draw conclusions on variability of the starting date of the pollen season and its dynamics in terms of meteorological factors. It is quite important especially due to the fact that studies conducted all over Europe have proved that species phenology responds to climate warming trends. There has been observed a tendency to an earlier onset of spring flowering and leafing as well as the lengthening of the growing season. Although phenological network studies differ with regard to regions, species, events observed and applied methods, their data show a clear temperature-driven extension of the growing season by up to 2 weeks in the second half of the 20th century in mid- and high northern latitudes; for example, in Germany changes in timing of phenological spring events have been estimated at about -1.6 days / decade, while in Switzerland: -2.3 days / decade. Despite interannual variability in flowering date, caused by specific meteorological conditions each year, long-time series of phenological data from the area of Poland have proved that hazel flowering occurred in the surroundings of Warsaw later in the 50’s (third decade of March) than it is observed at the beginning of the 21st century (second decade of March). There is a lack of such long time series of pollen data, but we can suspect that the hazel pollen season has changed similarly to the time pattern of its flowering. Plants are very sensitive to weather conditions, therefore it is important to know as precisely as possible the impact of meteorological conditions on a plant’s reactions. The determination of thermal thresholds for a specific plant’s reactions may be beneficial for this purpose. The estimated value of Positive Degree Days (PDD> 50), which caused the first Corylus flowers (F2 phenophase) to bloom in the study years, requires testing in future years to make the threshold values credible.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of an analysis of pollen season patterns for taxa which show the strongest allergenic activity (alder, birch, grasses, and mugwort) in 2008 in the air over Wrocław and Olszanica. The study was carried out using the volumetric method (Burkard trap). The results show variation in pollen seasons between the analyzed localities. An attempt was made to find out in which of the sites in question – the urban site or the rural one – there was a greater risk of allergens of the selected plants. The results of the present study show that the alder, birch and grass pollen seasons in 2008 started and ended earlier in Wrocław, and maximum pollen concentrations were definitely lower. But the mugwort pollen season started earlier and ended much later in Olszanica, while maximum pollen concentration of this taxon was more than twice lower than in Wrocław. In 2008 in the investigated localities, the highest pollen concentrations of the plants in question occurred in the following months: alder in February, birch in April, grasses in June, while mugwort in August. In 2008 alder and birch pollen allergen risk was comparable in the investigated urban and rural environment. However, grass and mugwort pollen allergens posed a significantly greater threat in the rural environment than in Wrocław.

Late Glacial
western Lithuania
Opis:
The organic-rich material has been studied from the bottom part of lacustrine sediments of the Lake Kasuciai, western Lithuania. Radiocarbon dates and palaeobotanical data showed that these sediments accumulated between 13,500 and 9000 14C yr BP. The Late Glacial interstadial is defined by the dominance of Characeae and accumulation of carbonate. The Bolling is characterized by the pioneer taxa and the communities of open habitats. During the Allerod pine replaced the light demanding taxa that show development of a closer woodland habitat and dryness of climate. The short period between Bolling and Allerod with increasing representation of Betula and plants typical for the highly eroded habitats could be correlated with Older Dryas. The onset of the Younger Dryas is marked by degradation of the forest cover and expansion of heliophytic grasses. Entire vegetation cover with birch and pine forest was settled during the Preborial. Formation of calcareous sediments and appearance of thermophilous taxa confirm the climatic amelioration.

Opis:
In this study pollen grains of 13 cultivars and 3 rootstocks belonging to 5 species (P. armeniaca, P. domestica, P. dulcis, P. persica, P. avium) of the genus Prunus collected from North-East Sicily were examined for the micromorphological characterization through the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The length of polar axis (P) and the equatorial diameter (E) of grain, P/E ratio, the length of colpi (C), diameter of perforations (DP) and the number of perforations in 25 μm2 (PN), the width of muri (WM), the distance between muri (DM) and their number in 25 μm2 (MN), the width of grooves (WG) were measured and their variation was compared among studied taxa. Moreover multivariate statistical analysis was carried out to distinguish morphometric information from measured parameters. All pollen grains are trizonocolpate, isopolar, medium-large sized and their shape varies from prolate to perprolate. Regarding outline pollen grains are subtriangular in polar view and elliptic in equatorial view. Exine sculpturing is striate with perforations on grain surface. The arrangement of ridges appears roughly parallel but too sloped (sometimes curved) compared to polar axis, or branched and oriented in different directions, or perfectly parallel or more irregular with bifurcated ridges often sinuous. The analyses showed a great variability (particularly in P. domestica cultivars) related in some cases to the diversity in the morphological features of the leaves and the fruits of the investigated entities.

Opis:
In the Łomża region, northeastern Poland, many new lacustrine and peat deposits have been found. Pollen analysis of borehole material shows that they accumulated mostly during the Eemian Interglacial. Parts of these sites were active in the Vistulian, probably in its early phases. The sites analysed usually represent small lakes or peat-bogs sediment with accumulating in different time intervals of the Eemian. Only exceptionally they are represented by deep-water facies with a decrease in water level not before the hornbeam zone, as seen at many Eemian sites in Poland. Especially interesting is the occurrence in the pollen spectra of a number of exotic taxa such as Viburnum lantana, Bruckenthalia spiculifolia, Falcaria vulgaris, Lycopodium lucidulum t. noted previously in the Eemian Interglacial mainly in the south and in the southeastern Poland, where milder climatic conditions prevailed. The analysed interglacial spectra also show signs of plant—animal interaction. Such signs have been observed in Holocene and Vistulian strata, although in other pollen taxa. Pollen affected by these processes may come to resemble other species and so be misidentified.

Opis:
The present study was conducted to illustrate the micromorphology of mature sporangia and pollen grains of four Ginkgo biloba cultivars: ‘Horizontalis’, ‘Lasiocarpa’, ‘Pragensis’ and ‘Tubifolia’ and is a continuation of earlier investigations on this subject. The sporophylls bear typically two pendulous sporangia, whereas three were found in one cultivar. The sporangia varied in shape from oval, elliptical elongate to boat-shaped and dehisced along a longitudinal slit. The sporangial walls are multilayered. The sculpture of the sporangium is rugose covered with wax crystals (tubules) and the endothecium shows clearly visible fibrous thickening on the wall. The pollen grains are monosulcate, the non-apertural surface is irregularly ridged (striate) or rugulate, with perforations and the germinal aperture (furrow) is covered with verrucae. The current study did not differentiate significantly four cultivars based on sporangia and pollen morphology. The micromorphological traits may be useful for identification and classification of fragments of fossil sporangia and pollen grains.

Opis:
In the study, structural features of fl owers of the following allergenic plant species were analysed: Betula verrucosa, Secale cereale, Rumex acetosella, Plantago major and Artemisia vulgaris. Pollen production was established by calculating the number of pollen grains produced by the stamen, fl ower and infl orescence. The dates of occurrence and pollen grains concentration in the air of Lublin were determined. A positive correlation was found between the length of anthers and the number of pollen grains produced. The largest number of pollen grains per anther is produced by Secale cereale (22 360), whereas the smallest one by Plantago major (5 870). The other species produced intermediate numbers of pollen grains in the anther: Betula verrucosa – 11 160, Rumex acetosella – 10 850, Artemisia vulgaris – 9 580. The birch pollen season in Lublin lasts about a month, and pollen of this taxon reaches the highest airborne concentrations among the studied taxa. Low values of pollen concentrations are characteristic for rye and plantain, whereas slightly higher values are recorded for sorrel pollen. Mugwort pollen reaches high concentrations which are noted at the beginning of August.
W pracy analizowano cechy budowy kwiatów następujących gatunków roślin alergogennych: Betula verrucosa, Secale cereale, Rumex acetosella, Plantago major oraz Artemisia vulgaris. Określono obfi tość pylenia obliczając liczbę ziarn pyłku wytwarzaną przez pręcik, kwiat i kwiatostan. Ustalono terminy występowania oraz stężenie ziarn pyłku w powietrzu Lublina. Stwierdzono dodatnią zależność między długością pylników a liczbą wytwarzanych ziarn pyłku. Najwięcej ziarn pyłku w główce pręcikowej produkuje Secale cereale (22 360), zaś najmniej Plantago major (5 870). Pozostałe gatunki tworzyły w pręciku pośrednie ilości ziarn pyłku: Betula verrucosa – 11 160, Rumex acetosella – 10 850, Artemisia vulgaris – 9 580. Sezon pyłkowy brzozy w Lublinie trwa około miesiąca, a pyłek wymienionego taksonu osiąga najwyższe koncentracje w powietrzu spośród badanych taksonów. Niskie wartości stężenia pyłku są charakterystyczne dla żyta i babki, nieco wyższe rejestrowane są dla pyłku szczawiu. Pyłek bylicy osiąga wysokie stężenia, które notowane są na początku sierpnia.
