In 1955, Kotzig proved that every 3-connected planar graph has an edge with the degree sum of its end vertices at most 13, which is tight. An edge uv is of type (i, j) if d(u) ≤ i and d(v) ≤ j. Borodin (1991) proved that every normal plane map contains an edge of one of the types (3, 10), (4, 7), or (5, 6), which is tight. Cole, Kowalik, and Škrekovski (2007) deduced from this result by Borodin that Kotzig’s bound of 13 is valid for all planar graphs with minimum degree δ at least 2 in which every d-vertex, d ≥ 12, has at most d − 11 neighbors of degree 2. We give a common extension of the three above results by proving for any integer t ≥ 1 that every plane graph with δ ≥ 2 and no d-vertex, d ≥ 11+t, having more than d − 11 neighbors of degree 2 has an edge of one of the following types: (2, 10+t), (3, 10), (4, 7), or (5, 6), where all parameters are tight.

A sonic crystal consists of a finite-size periodic array of scatters embedded in a background material. One of the fascinating properties of sonic crystals is the focusing phenomenon. In this study, the near field focusing effect of a solid-air 2D sonic crystal lens with a square lattice configuration is investigated in the second frequency band. The band structure and equifrequency contour of the crystal are analyzed to reveal the dispersion of an acoustic wave on the crystal structure. The frequency dependence of the acoustic wave focalization by the sonic crystal flat lens is demonstrated via Finite Difference Time Domain simulation results and experimental measurements.

We investigate face irregular labelings of plane graphs and we introduce new graph characteristics, namely face irregularity strength of type (α,β,γ). We obtain some estimation on these parameters and determine the precise values for certain families of plane graphs that prove the sharpness of the lower bounds.

The paper presents results of theoretical analysis of the finite amplitude plane wave propagation problem. The case of harmonic plane wave propagation in non-dissipative medium was considered. The mathematical model and some results of numerical investigations are presented. The mathematical model was built on the basis of one-dimensional continuity equation, equation of motion in differential form and state equation. The finite difference method was applied to solve the problem numerically. The pressure changes and harmonic pressure amplitude changes were analysed. The results of computer calculations were compared with solution of the Burgers equation.

Opis:
To achieve acceptable dynamical behavior for large rotating machines operating at subcritical speeds, the balancing quality check at the planned service speed in the installation location is often demanded for machines such as turbo-generators or high-speed machines. While most studies investigate the balancing quality at critical speeds, only a few studies have investigated this aspect using numerical methods at operational speed. This study proposes a novel, model-based method for inversely estimating initial residual unbalance in one and two planes after initial grade balancing for large flexible rotors operating at the service speeds. The method utilizes vibration measurements from two planes in any single direction, combined with a finite element model of the rotor to inversely determine the residual unbalance in one and two planes. This method can be practically used to determine the initial and residual unbalance after the balancing process, and further it can be used for condition-based monitoring of the unbalance state of the rotor.

The paper records some of the results and observations from a pilot scale plane-flow silo with a variable geometry hopper and a fully width slot outlet. The original objectives were simply to study the shape of arches and their failure mechanisms under a range of conditions. However, the behaviour of arches did not conform to the conventional assumptions and neither did other silo behaviour. The paper contains a summary of the main findings of this work, but concentrates on the arches formed under mass-flow and non-mass-flow geometries for the filling condition.

A new linear Support Vector Machine algorithm and solver are presented. The algorithm is in a twofold way well-suited for problems with a large number of training examples. First, unlike many optimization algorithms, it does not simultaneously keep all the examples in RAM and thus does not exhaust the memory (moreover, it smartly passes through disk files storing the data: two mechanisms reduce the computation time by disregarding some input data without a loss in solution quality). Second, it uses the analytical center cutting plane scheme, appearing as more efficient for hard parameter settings than the Kelley's scheme used in other solvers, like SVM_perf. The experiments with both real-life and artificial examples are described. In one of them the solver proved to be capable of solving a problem with one billion training examples. A critical analysis of the complexity of SVM_perf is given.

W publikacji przedstawiono wyniki badań eksploatacyjnych-polowych sita dwupłaszczyznowego zamontowanego w kombajnie zbożowym. Badania przeprowadzono w gospodarstwach rolnych województwa dolnośląskiego na polach o nachyleniu do 15°. Pobierano próby ziarna w warunkach jazdy kombajnu pod górę, przy nastawionych założonych nachyleniach sekcji uchylnej sita [delta] = 0°, 5°, 10° i 15.° Uzyskana wysoka czystość zbieranego ziarna pszenicy powyżej 99% potwierdziła poprawność funkcjonalną i możliwość zastosowania omawianego sita w tym kombajnie, do pracy w terenach nachylonych.
The paper presents the results of field investigation of the operation of a two-plane sieve mounted in a combine harvester. The testing was carried out on farms located in the Lower Silesia province, in the fields, the slope of which did not exceed 15°. Samples of seeds were taken when the combine harvester was going upwards, the inclination of the adjustable section of the sieve being set to [delta] = 0°, 5°, 10° and 15°. The high purity of the harvested wheat seeds, more than 99%, proves that the sieve operates correctly and it is possible to use it in this combine harvester for operations on sloping surfaces.

Modern infrared cameras are constructed with two main types of infrared detectors: photon detectors and thermal detectors. Because of economic reasons, vast numbers of modern thermal cameras are constructed with the use of infrared microbolometric detectors which belong to the group of thermal detectors. Thermal detectors detect incident infrared radiation by measuring changes of temperature on the surface of a special micro-bridge structure. Thermal detectors, like microbolometric detectors on one hand should be sensitive to changing temperature to accurately measure incoming infrared radiation from the observed scene, on the other hand there are many other phenomena that change the temperature of the detector and influence the overall response of the detector. In order to construct an accurate infrared camera, there is a need to evaluate these phenomena and quantify their influence. In the article the phenomenon of self heating due to the operation of the readout circuit is analyzed on an UL 03 19 1 detector. The theoretical analysis is compared with the results of conducted measurements. Measurements with a type SC7900VL thermographic camera were performed to measure the thermodynamic behavior of the UL 03 19 1 detector array.

The paper is concerned with the propagation of plane waves in a transversely isotropic two temperature generalized thermoelastic solid half-space with voids and rotation. The governing equations are modified in the context of Lord and Shulman theory of generalized thermoelasticity and solved to show the existence of four plane waves in the x – z plane. Reflection of these plane waves from thermally insulated stress free surface is also studied to obtain a system of four non-homogeneous equations. For numerical computations of speed and reflection coefficients, a particular material is modelled as transversely isotropic generalized thermoelastic solid half-space. The speeds of plane waves are computed against the angle of propagation to observe the effects of two temperature and rotation. Reflection coefficients of various reflected waves are also computed against the angle of incidence to observe the effects of various parameters.

Over the past 25 years highly successful methods for geometry theorem proving have been developed. We will use elementary and understandable examples to show the nature of the techniques for verification of geometric constructions made with interactive geometry environment and for proving geometric statements. In addition to some informations about the WinGCLC software with specific language, we look at the system GeoThms that integrates Automatic Theorem Provers, Dynamic Geometry Tools and a database. The abovementioned system provides an environment suitable for new ways of studying and teaching geometry at different levels.

The paper presents some experimental studies on a regular cross-ply laminate of the [(0/90)F] 4S configuration. Each layer is VE 11-M vinylester resin (the manufacturer: ,,Organika-Sarzvna" Chemical Plants, Sarzyna, Poland) reinforced with plam weave carbon fabric of parameters: Stvle 430, Carbon 6K, substance 300g/m2, warp/weft 400/400 tex, 3.7/3.7 yarn/cm (the manufacturer: C. Cramer GmbH & Co. KG Division ECC). The orthotropic laminate was produced by ROMA private enterprise In Grabowiec, Poland, using the vacuum molding method and the technological parameters developed by ROMA taking into account the VE 11-M material specijication. The PN-EN ISO 14129:1997 standard [1] and closely related standards [2-9] were taken into consideration in experimental studies on the static in-plane shear response by a tensile test of a [(plus or minus 45)F]nS laminate. A program of the experiments was focused on testing a rate of a testing machine crosshead and a number of static stress cycles. An influence of these factors on the in-plane shear modulus was investigated. Based on the conducted investigations, the modified experimental procedure has been proposed for determination of the correct value of the in-plane shear modulus and the in-plane shear strength.
