Opis:: The world has been experiencing the era of commemoration for several decades. The events and heroes, usually doomed to oblivion until recently, are being commemorated. Many monuments appear out of an initiative of social committees. Monuments create places important for towns in which social memory is celebrated. They are an affective reference to the past and a material basis of remembering. They bring the images of the past back, facilitate remembering, as well as judge the events and establish the heroes and anti-heroes of the history. Nowadays, a traditional approach to public monuments, marked by respect, are accompanied by unconventional forms of their usage, revealing the idea crisis of such monuments as sanctified places of memory.

Opis:: The article treats about a cultural landscape of the Nowy Dwór housing estate in Wrocław. Since its formation in 1938, the very estate has undergone deep topographic and ideologic changes: from the “racially elite” community at the time of national socialism, an “industrial colony” in socialism to the tower block it is nowadays. The aim of considerations on the past and present landscape of the housing estate is to understand the co-relations happening between people and the place of their inhabitance as a cultural phenomenon, and including it in a broader trend of cultural studies dealing with the places of memory, collective memory and cultural landscape.

Opis:: Autor przeanalizował wybrane akty krajowe i międzynarodowe i doszedł do wniosku, że w przepisach tych nie przyjęto jeszcze definicji miejsca pamięci jako przedmiotu ochrony prawnej. Nie oznacza to jednak, że miejsca pamięci pozostają całkowicie poza obszarem prawnym, chociaż są objęte prawnym systemem ochrony dziedzictwa jedynie w ramach ogólnej definicji dziedzictwa. W szczególności, aby kwalifikować się jako zabytki, miejsca te muszą spełniać standardowe kryteria "wartości historycznej lub szczególnego znaczenia". Tylko w niektórych systemach prawnych przepisy ogólne są uzupełniane o specjalne przepisy wskazujące ochronę prawną tych miejsc, określając ich typ lub wyznaczając konkretne obiekty. Jako przykład pierwszego podejścia można podać angielskie prawo, w którym pola bitew są wymieniane w specjalnym rejestrze historycznych bitew Anglii. Takie rozwiązanie zastosowano na przykład w Niemczech i Polsce. W prawie niemieckim można odnieść się np. do krajowego prawa Saksonii, które określa jako obiekty chronione synagogi w Dreźnie i Görlitz, miejsca dawnych synagog w Chemnitz i Lipsku oraz dawne obozy koncentracyjne. Polska ustawa o ochronie byłych nazistowskich obozów zagłady wymienia osiem takich obozów. W podsumowaniu autor określa potrzebę opracowania legalnych definicji miejsc pamięci, które mogłyby być oparte na istniejącej doktrynie wskazującej, że takie miejsca są swoistymi kombinacjami namacalnych i niematerialnych elementów, które razem są ważne nie tylko dla konkretnych społeczności, ale często mają wiele szersze znaczenie dla ludzkości, a zatem są częścią światowego dziedzictwa kulturowego. Taka definicja mogłaby zostać włączona do konwencji UNESCO z 1972 r. lub na wcześniejszych etapach tworzenia jej wytycznych.
Author has analysed chosen national and international acts and came to conclusion that no definition specifying places of memory as objects of legal protection had yet been adopted in these regulations. However this in no way means that places of memory remain completely outside legal area, although they are covered by the legal system of heritage protection merely within the framework of general definition of heritage. In particular, to be qualified as monuments these places have to meet standard criteria of “historical value or significance”. Only under some legal systems such general provisions are supplemented by special laws that define legal protection of these places either by specifying their type or by indicating specific objects. As an example of the first approach English Law can be given, where battlefields are subject to listing in the special Historic England’s Register of Historic Battlefields. The latter solution has been applied, for example, in Germany and Poland. In German law, one can refer to, eg., law of the land of Saxony, which designates as protected objects the synagogues in Dresden and Gorlitz, the sites of the old synagogues in Chemnitz and Leipzig, and former concentration camps. The Polish Act on the Protection of the Former Nazi Extermination Camps expressly mentions eight such camps. In the conclusion author sees the need of elaboration of legal definition of places of memory which could be based on the existing doctrine indicating that such places are peculiar combinations of tangible and intangible elements that together are important not only for specific communities but often have much broader significance and concern for all humanity, and therefore are part of the world’s cultural heritage. Such definition could be incorporated to the 1972 UNESCO Convention or at earlier stage to the Operational Guidelines connected with this act.

Opis:: Dziś miejsce bitwy stoczonej pod Ostrołęką 26 maja 1831 r. to swego rodzaju palimpsest wydarzeń zapisywanych w przestrzeni w minionych 180 latach. W artykule przedstawiono kolejne działania podejmowane w miejscu walk w kontekście zmiennych uwarunkowań historycznych. Omówiono następujące po sobie przekształcenia w krajobrazie, od umieszczania drobnych form upamiętniających obie walczące strony, poprzez budowę fortu, aż do skomplikowanych dziejów ponad 80 lat budowy mauzoleum. Ślady niektórych z nich zostały zatarte w wyniku kolejnych działań, inne współtworzą obecny obraz przestrzenny. Wszystkie przynależą do kultywowanej przez mieszkańców Ostrołęki pamięci miejsca, istotnego elementu dziedzictwa historycznego, sprzyjającego budowaniu lokalnej tożsamości.
Nowadays the site of the battle which was fought at Ostrołęka on the 26th of May 1831 constitutes a kind of a palimpsest of the written in space events that took place within the past 180 years. In the article the subsequent operations taken in the site of battles, in the context of changeable historical determinants, have been presented. The following changes in the countryside, starting from placing tiny elements commemorating both fighting parties, through the building of the fort, up to the complex over eighty-year long operations related to the construction of the mausoleum – all of them have been described in the article. The traces of some events faded as a result of subsequent operations, some others create together the present space of the site. All of them belong to the memory of place, tended by Ostrołęka inhabitants, the site which constitutes a significant element of the historical heritage, which results in creating the local identity.

Opis:: The issues of memory, heritage, and archaeology are strictly connected to the archaeology of the contemporary past and the Nazi period. That connection is a new field of research that lead to the reconceptualization of ideas of a museum, archives, and their relations to memory. In the paper authors discuss the case study of the area of former labor and concentration camp Plaszow in Krakow (1942–1945). Since 2016, numerous archeological research and education programs were conducted by the Museum of Krakow. The main purpose of documentation, surface surveys, and excavations was preservation of the architectural relicts and landscape, and supplementing the historical knowledge of authentic archaeological sources. The results of the research were related to the preparation of the boundaries for the future commemoration of the former camp’s area and its history as a museum and memorial site. The outcome of the archaeological activity is collection of artifacts, documentation and archaeological knowledge that influenced the idea of commemoration in its specific way. The article attempts to answer the questions about the categories of archives and museums.

Opis:: In this article the author argues that Route of Don Quixote is a mnemotope, which allows to examine the relations betwen landscape, literary trails and collective memory. The author suggests that the Mancha’s landscape can be considered as the first in the history of Western culture and this fact should be connected with the values of the Spanish community. Noticing that the Route of Don Quixote is the mnemotope clarifies why it was the first European Cultural Itinerary constructed on a literary figure, explains the political usage of the figure of Don Quixote, the reasons for passionate discussions on how to commemorate cervantine anniversaries or dispute about the true knight-errant wandering route. The author explores some of the contemporary cervantine place of memory (the date of III and IV Centenary of the edition of the first part of the novel, the famous Azorín’s journey, Quixotic street names, „true” novelistic places, landscape with windmills). The author characterizes various communities of memory (exiliados, readers, cervantists),that used the figure of Quixote. The author asks whether traveling in search of the knight’s footsteps is drifting the physical space or rather an imitation of his actions. From the perspective of memory research there are multiple routes of Don Quixote, because in different communities are cultivated different memories of true knight’s route. Using the Halbwachs’ concept the author shows the importance of location of Don Quixote’s adventures. Pondering the meaning of „death of cervantine landscape” the author concludes that the literary vision of The Mancha, „holy landscape” in which the community reaffirms its value, still exists.

Opis:: W artykule pochylono się nad problematyką wielowymiarowości kategorii czasu w procesie edukacyjnym. Ukazano jej znaczenie dla uczenia (się) miejsc żywej pamięci, które umożliwiają odniesienie się do przeszłości w teraźniejszości dla przyszłości. W tekście zaprezentowano immanentne własności miejsc (żywej) pamięci, ich równoczesnego funkcjonowania na poziomie czasu przeszłego, teraźniejszego i przyszłego, które utwierdzone zostało dzięki zaistniałej na gruncie nauk historycznych zmianie paradygmatycznej (nadejściu w historii „czasu pamięci”). W jego końcowej części zaprezentowano fazy procesu dydaktycznego zbudowanego wokół miejsc żywej pamięci, sformułowano tezę, że osadzenie go w ramach badań w działaniu podnosi jego efektywność.
The article analyzes the issue of multidimensionality of the category of time in the educational process. Its meaning for learning places of living memory, which enables to relate to the past in the present for the future, was discussed. The paper presents the immanent properties of places of (living) memory, their simultaneous functioning at the level of the past, present and future time, which is consolidated by the paradigm change in historical studies (emergence of “time of remembrance” in history). The final part shows the stage of didactical process built around the places of living memory and formulates the thesis that embedding it within action research enhances its effectiveness.

Opis:: W pracy omówiono pojęcie miejsce pamięci, jego zakres, i wiążące się z nim skojarzenia i społeczny w kolejnych okresach historycznych. Przedstawiono też zmiany rozumienia tego terminu i odmienne kształtowanie różnych miejsc pamięci w kolejnych okresach historycznych, a także zwrócono uwagę na odmienne interpretacje wydarzeń, które upamiętniały, co wpływało na ich różne urządzanie i odmienny odbiór społeczny. Analizując funkcjonowanie polskich miejsc pamięci w XX wieku należy zauważyć częste i gruntowne zmiany ich znaczenia i odbioru społecznego. Interpretacja wydarzeń i form upamiętnienia była zależna od aktualnej sytuacji społecznej i politycznej. Nawet niewielka zmiana sytuacji politycznej powodowała znaczące zmiany interpretacji miejsc pamięci i dotyczącej ich propagandy. Mimo to miejsca pamięci stały się ważnymi nośnikami pamięci. Ich przejawem były bardzo nowatorskie projekty upamiętnień zarówno w formie pomników (pomniki w danych obozach koncentracyjnych - Oświęcim, Majdanek, Treblinka), jak i wielkich kompozycji przestrzennych (nowa zabudowy upamiętniająca warszawskie getto), które powstawały po 1945 roku. Rozumienie polskich miejsc pamięci znacząco zmieniało się w XX wieku, podobnie jak cała tradycja kulturowa. Zmieniało się także ich postrzeganie, rozumienie, jak i sposób odbioru społecznego, niezależnie od dużej akceptacji społecznej. Także i dzisiaj rozumienie miejsc pamięci nie jest ostatecznie zdefiniowane i nadal będzie podlegało ono zmianom interpretacji i odbioru, co ma wpływ na ich znaczenie i formy ochrony.
The paper discusses the concept of the place of memory, its scope, and associated associations and social in subsequent historical periods. Changes in understanding this term and different shaping of different places of memory in subsequent historical periods were also presented, as well as different interpretations of events that commemorated, which influenced their different organization and different social perception. Analyzing the functioning of Polish places of memory in the twentieth century should be noted frequent and profound changes their meaning and social acceptance. Interpretation of events and forms of commemoration was dependent on the current social and political situation. Even a small change in the political situation caused significant changes in the interpretation of memorial sites and their propaganda. Nevertheless, places of memory have become important carriers of memory. Their manifestations were very innovative memorial projects both in the form of monuments (monuments in given concentration camps - Oświęcim, Majdanek, Treblinka), as well as great spatial compositions (new buildings commemorating the Warsaw ghetto), which were created after 1945.
