Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a query aimed at assessing the validity of the topic of crankcase explosions prevention in the main marine engines. The study takes into account the engine type, engine manufacturer, ship’s age, accident severity, ship’s location at the time of the incident, and the share of fatal accidents in the analyzed population of crankcase explosions. One of the primary hazards associated with offshore and deep-sea ship operations – and primarily ship power plants – are fires and explosions that result in accidents and incidents with an average frequency of 60 days. This paper discusses the actuality of crankcase explosion hazards in the main propulsion engines of various types of sea vessels. The assessment was made based on the results of a statistical analysis of historical data from 1972 to 2018. The methodology consisted of three stages: (1) a selection query to obtain the source data, (2) analysis of the obtained results (data separation, extraction of additional information, and statistical analysis), (3) synthesis of the obtained information, and drawing conclusions about the numerical indicators describing the statistical distribution of individual events for the given evaluation criteria. The analysis showed that the risk of crankcase explosions affects ships of all ages – both in crosshead (31%) and trunk piston engines (61%) – and that the number of serious incidents (67%) remained constant over the investigated period. Half of all incidents occurred on vessels younger than 15 years old. 58% of explosions took place in engines of the most popular prime movers manufacturers. The probability that a main engine crankcase explosion will result in injury or death is 17.34%.

Opis:
This article presents the results of a study of an alternative method for reducing friction losses in the cylinder-piston group of internal combustion engines based on an experimental installation, taking into account changes in the real state of the working surfaces of the mating parts of the piston ring-cylinder pair depending on the operating time. The factors with a progressive effect on the operation of engine friction units as they wear out are studied, and the degree of their influence on wear is estimated. A model of the friction unit of a cylinder-piston group (piston-piston ring pair) of an internal combustion engine based on a solid antifriction material operating without the use of a lubricating fluid is developed and investigated. Comparative results of determining the wear indicators of sealing rings by various methods of wear control are presented. A method for predicting the resource and the real state of the engine is proposed.

Objective of this work was to realize a test of durability of railway engine EMD645 with power about 1300 kW. Within the framework of this test were investigated a prototyped piston’s rings with diamond embankment. Piston rings are made of chromium layer with including of diamond powders technology with a porous chromium coating, where in pores is deposited on said diamond powder with a grain size about 1 micron. The work will be carried out of an analysis of collaboration piston-piston rings-cylinder unit in internal combustion engine and an analysis of the use of hard materials (diamond powder) in friction pairs. During work of this unit we can observe wear of piston rings, precisely - of coating which is deposited on ring to prolong service life. After testing of the locomotive engine EMD645 on the basis of the collected results are developed conclusions of the wearing intensity on piston ring and relating them to the requirements for coatings. The work aims to show the possibilities and benefits of the application of new protective coatings on structural elements of the internal combustion engine in order to reduce their wearing, which is consistent with the observed trend of technology development.

Opis:
Combustion engine pistons are subject to variable mechanical and thermal loads, and to variable deformations. The article presents the possibilities of using novel composite alloys for the construction of pistons for combustion engines. The novel alloys make it possible to meet high demands, especially for highly load designs, which practically cannot be met by conventional alloys used so far. These high requirements relate to the weight of the pistons, high temperature strength, alloy crystalline structure, abrasive wear resistance, dimensional stability. The requirements for pistons have an impact on the durability of the engine's operation, the level of noise emissions; exhaust gas blow-by into the crankcase, the level of emitted toxic exhaust components, mainly hydrocarbons. The research covered metallography (chemical composition, microstructure), material strength, abrasive wear, and thermal expansion. Investigations of the alloy crystallization process during casting were carried out using the Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) method. The castings were used for metallographic tests. The strength of the samples was tested at room temperature (20°C) and elevated temperature (up to 350°C) on a testing machine equipped with a special climatic chamber. In particular, the article presents Thermal Derivative Analysis curves and representative microstructures of conventional AlSi12 alloy and the novel composite alloy; dependence of the tensile strength versus temperature for the samples of the novel alloy with various nickel content 2% and 4 %; comparison of the tensile strength for conventional alloy and the novel alloy at ambient and 250°C temperature; comparison of abrasive wear of samples, made of novel aluminium alloy and different cast iron; course of the linear expansion coefficient versus temperature for the conventional AlSi12 alloy with incorrect heat treatment; course of the linear expansion coefficient versus temperature for one of tested silumin alloy which expansion coefficient during sample cooling is smaller than during sample heating; course of the linear expansion coefficient versus temperature for the novel composite silumin alloy, after correct heat treatment. The great benefits of using this novel alloy and the introduction of novel alloying elements (in-Situ) have been confirmed in engine research.

Opis:
In this paper, the results of modeling of the burning process in the piston engines whose working process is realized on the basis of various conceptual approaches are presented: in diesel with direct injection of the fuel; in a gas engine with spark ignition; and in a two-fuel engine (in the gas-diesel), where the mixture of natural gas and air ignites with the help of the fuse dose of the diesel fuel. The models of burning based on the different in-principle approaches are analyzed and used. Verification of the models is performed by a comparison of the results of modeling with the experimental diagrams. The specific values of the empirical coefficients, used in modeling of the burning proces in the engines under study, are determined. The practical recommendations on the choice of the burning model depending on the working process conception are given.

Opis:
The article presents calculations of thermal and mechanical loads of the piston, consisting of two parts: steel and aluminum. The calculations were made using FEM in the Abaqus software. The piston is characterized by a split construction and was equipped with a cooling oil channel. The piston will be used in an aircraft diesel engine characterized by opposite piston movement. The presented geometry of the piston is the next of the ones being developed earlier and contains preliminary assumptions as to the size and main geometrical dimensions. The thermal boundary conditions of the simulation tests assumed defined areas of heat reception surface and heating of the piston by defining a temperature map on its crown. The results of these studies were presented in the form of temperature distribution and heat flux on the surface of the tested element. The strength boundary conditions assumed a mechanical load in the form of pressure resulting from the pressure in the combustion chamber applied to the piston crown surface and the opposite pressure defined on the support at the surface of contact between the piston and the piston pin. The results of these tests were presented in the form of stress distribution on the surface of the tested element. As a result of the analyses carried out, the results constituting the basis for further modernization of the piston geometry were obtained.

Opis:
To estimate the effect of the axial movement of piston rings in the piston grooves on the blow-by in the internal combustion engine (ICE) by an experiment- calculated method. This contributes to the development of practical recommendations for the further improvement of the engine ring seal designs. Abstract theorems were used when modelling the effect of the axial movement of piston rings in the piston grooves on the blow-by in an ICE. They are based on the fundamental theory of heat engines, thermodynamics and hydraulics. The ICE running was analysed using design-theoretical research methods. The effect of the axial movement of piston rings in the piston grooves on the blow-by in the ICE was established. This creates prerequisites for a more accurate assessment of their sealing capacity and for ways to further improve them. Calculated dependences for computing the blow-by depending on the positional relationship of the rings in the piston grooves were obtained. The dependences of gas escapes on the engine crankshaft speed were obtained, which is especially important for idling modes by which one can judge the dynamic stability of the ring seal and solve the problems of improving its service properties. The calculated dependences for evaluation of the blow-by depending on the positional relationship of the rings in the piston grooves and their respective possible gas flows in the ring seal were obtained for the first time. The practical method for estimating the dynamic stability of the ring seal by decencies of gas escape on the crankshaft rotation speed in ICE was proposed.

In this article the engine piston Renault Premium DXi11 430 460 EEV has been analysed using the Finite Element Method. Analysis consider as well heat transfer phenomenon as the thermal and mechanical strains of the piston. Simulations were performed for the point of engine maximum power. Piston material was assumed to be 40HM (1.7225) steel and its properties are delivered basing on available scientific papers. The simulation assumed mean values of heat transfer coefficient, reference temperature and cycle pressure based on engine data, maximum power engine work simulation in AVL Boost software and literature. Part of boundary condition (e.g. cylinder wall temperature) was assumed basing on authors’ engineering intuition and experience. The resulting temperature distribution in the piston was implemented for geometrically nonlinear mechanical FEM analysis. Both the analysis of thermal stresses and stresses of the hot piston in the top dead centre were performed.

Opis:
The article presents a method of piston temperature measurement on a running engine using electromagnetic induction for transferring measurement results from a moving measuring system placed in a piston to a stationary system attached to the engine crankcase and to measuring system located outside the engine. Selected test results that were carried out on a single-cylinder Diesel engine are presented. A system consisting of a thermistor and a secondary coil was mounted in the piston. The primary coil was mounted in the crankcase under the cylinder liner of the engine. Engine tests were aimed at determining the influence of the piston ring insert on the temperature distribution in the piston. Temperature measurements in the piston without the ring insert were carried out for comparison. In both cases, the pistons had the same geometrical dimensions. The tests were carried out in conditions of external characteristics (the maximum load as a function of engine speed) and load characteristics (load changes at constant engine speed). The test results in the form of the temperature difference between the temperature of piston top and the temperature under the top compression ring indicate that the ring insert is a barrier to the heat flow from the piston to the engine cooling system. In addition, the results of the piston temperature measurements during the step change of the engine speed and its load to the nominal value are presented.

The subject of the publication concerns issues and research related to the phenomenon of cargo losses in the form of gusts of crankcase gases through the piston-ring-cylinder (PRC) of internal combustion engines. The analyzed problem concerns the evaluation of the movement and displacement of the sealing rings, which has the greatest effect on the purge rate. As a result of engine tests, it has been observed that the blow-by phenomenon is influenced by many constructional and operational parameters of the piston-type combustion engine. The scope of the study confirmed the influence of these parameters on the ring motions and on the blow-by phenomenon.

In this paper the results of nonlinear stress analysis of the crankshaft of piston engine were performed. In first part of the study the real crankshaft geometry was scanned with the use of 3D optical scanner. On the base of obtained geometry the discrete model of crankshaft was created. The complex loads and boundary condition were next defined to considered component. As a result of calculations using finite element method, the stress distribution in the crankshaft was obtained. Obtained results showed that the maximum stress area occurs onto surface of crank pin no. 4, near the oil hole. The crack was detected just in the same zone in shaft. The main conclusion resulting from this work is that the oil hole position should be changed in order to both decrease the stress concentration and increase the fatigue life of the crankshaft.

Opis:
The contemporary progress of automotive industry and transportation is determined to a large extent by the increasing environmental requirements, aimed at limiting the harmful impact of vehicles upon human life and people’s health. A crucial issue linked with operating vehicles is the exhaust gases generated by internal combustion engines. In order to reduce this hazardous impact upon the natural environment, the construction of the engines is continuously improved, electronic controlling is being developed for managing the course of working processes taking place in cylinders and auxiliary systems, exhaust gases cleaning systems are being developed, alternative fuels are being sought for and the possibilities of their optimal use are being examined. Natural gas is the fuel that is highly expected and hoped to be used more widely for powering internal combustion engines in vehicles. This article presents the values of selected ecological indicators of the Perkins 1104D-E44TA Diesel engine, powered by compressed natural gas and Diesel fuel (CNG + ON). For comparison reasons, the engine was powered with both fuels at the same time and then only by Diesel fuel (ON) in the same working conditions. Before the tests, the powering system control unit had been calibrated so as to enable obtaining similar values of torque while the engine was powered with the Diesel fuel only and with both CNG and ON while working with external speed characteristics; the calibration was also set up to allow for the maximum share of the natural gas in the total fuel amount supplied into the engine cylinders without engine knocking. When powering the engine with both CNG and Diesel fuel, the concentration levels of nitric oxides and carbon dioxide in exhaust gases were lower. However, the total content of hydrocarbons in the exhaust gases grew multiple times, and the content of the carbon monoxide was significantly increased. In addition, the obtained measurement results of the smokiness of the exhaust gases and the content of the soot with the engine powered with two fuels were not satisfactory.

Opis:
The piston is the most mechanically and thermally loaded engine component. The energy required to overcome the mechanical losses in the combustion engine is approx. 10% of the energy supplied to the engine in a fuel. The main node piston-pin-piston rings are most responsible for the formation of mechanical losses. It is advisable to reduce friction losses in the piston-cylinder group lead to an increase in the overall efficiency of the engine and thus reduce the fuel consumption. The way of achieving these objectives is modification of microgeometry of the pistonbearing surface, which cooperates with the cylinder wall. The geometry of the gap between the piston skirt and the cylinder liner greatly affects the friction loss inside combustion engine. A way to reduce the area covered by the oil film is the application of a stepped profile of the piston skirt. The stepwise profile can be obtained covering the cylindrical or tapered piston-bearing surface with a thin layer graphite. Covering the piston bearing surface with a thin layer of graphite one can get an extremely advantageous tribological properties of the piston assembly which means the expected parameters of oil film and reduction friction loss. In this article, the results of research on experimental pistons on friction loss in combustion engine are presented.

The development of novel composite silumin (aluminium-silicon alloy), which contains a little more Copper and Nickel, and the introduction of novel alloyed elements, such as Chromium, Molybdenum, Tungsten, increases the strength of the alloy and its thermal stability during successive heating and cooling. The pistons made of this alloy may have a little bigger outside diameter than the pistons made of PA-12 standard alloy, and a smaller clearance between the piston and cylinder liner. The pistons made of standard and novel alloy were mounted successively in the "W" engine. The full load and part load curves were determined. The lubrication oil consumption, fuel consumption, exhaust emission, blow-by and noise were determined too. The article presents the results of the above-mentioned research. The novel composite alloy enables further engine modernization because the engine should operate at higher pressure and temperature in the combustion chamber.
