Opis:
The process of plant selection by insects is mediated by repellents and attractants. Several compounds may be involved in this interaction. Thus intraspecific variation of the compounds concentration play an important role in the herbivory. The best tool for the characteristic of this variation is chemometrics. The strategy of the analysis with the use of literature data on terpenes and sesquiterpenes variations in Pinus caribaea needles in relation to Atta laevigata herbivory is exemplified herein. Simple cluster analysis and principal components analysis were used for the data study. Two factors were found to be sufficient to describe total variation in more than 90%. Factor 1 is responsible for repellent properties. From factor loading, the relevant chemical compounds were identified.
Przeprowadzono pełną analizę chemometryczną danych literaturowych dotyczących zmian składu terpenów i seskwiterpenów z igieł sosny Pinus caribaea w odniesieniu do żerowania mrówek Atta laevigata. Do klasyfikacji danych zastosowano metodę analizy wiązkowej i metodę głównych składników. Dla opisu ponad 90% zmienności składu wystarczyło zastosować dwa faktory opisujące dane dotyczące drzew defoliowanych i niedefoliowanych. Metodą analizy chemometrycznej z ładunków faktorów zidentyfikowano związki chemiczne istotne w oddziaływaniach ekologicznych.

Opis:
The needles of the Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) (PA) are very abundant in the forest of the National Park of Tazekka (Ta-za-Morocco) and are unexploitable. Moreover, they constitute a potential danger because they facilitate the outbreak of wildfires. To solve this problem, we have considered turning these needles into a biomaterial that could be used as raw material for different uses, such as wastewater treatment. The biomaterial of the Aleppo pine is obtained from its needles which are harvested in spring, dried, cut, crushed, and sieved. The powder obtained is analyzed before and after the extraction of essential oil. The physicochemical and spectroscopic analyses show that this biomaterial is porous, hygroscopic, slightly acidic, moderately moist, and not very conducive. Its average density in the anhydrous state is 0.6. It is rich in carbon (79.91%) and oxygen (18.91%) in the form of aromatic compounds and ketone imprints; thus, relating the presence of cellulose, pectin, lignin, and hemicellulose. Its composition in mineral elements (Na, Mg, Ca, K, Cl, S) is deficient. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of the oils extracted from the needle powder relates that it is a complex mixture of bioactive compounds such as mono-terpenoid α and β-pinene hydrocarbons. These results show that our biomaterial can be used as an adsorbent in wastewater treatment and the extracted essential oils can be used in the pharmacological, agro-food field.

Pine needles and foodstuffs collected from Beijing, China, were analyzed by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) combined with organic solvent extraction for total halogens, extractable organohalogens (EOX) and extractable persistent organohalogens (EPOX). The INAA detection limits are 50 ng, 8 ng and 3.5 ng for Cl, Br and I, respectively. The contents and distribution patterns of organohalogens in these samples are reported. EOCl accounted for 0.013 0.016% and 1.6 2.7% of the total chlorine in yogurt and apples, respectively, which suggested that chlorine in foodstuffs mainly existed as inorganic species and non-extractable organochlorines. EOCl contents in pine needles and foodstuffs were noticeably higher than those of EOBr and EOI. For pine needles, yogurt and apples, 1.6 34%, 23 58% and 29 35% of EOCl remained as extractable persistent organochlorine (EPOCl), respectively. Pine needle containing higher EOCl contents in chemical industrial and traffic hub areas indicated that chemical industries and exhaust emission from vehicle were the main sources of organochlorines in the Beijing's air. The relative proportions of the known organochlorines (such as HCHs, DDTs, chlordanes, heptachlor, HCB and PCBs) to the total EOCl and EPOCl were 0.04 1.6% and 0.7 21.5%, respectively, which implied that the identity of species of a major portion of the EOCl and EPOCl measured in pine needles was unknown.

The synergistic effect of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and boric acid (BA) on the flame retardancy and thermal degradation of pine needles was investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the presence of an ammoniumpolyphosphate and boric acid system increased the char residue and decreased the pyrolysis temperature of the pine needles. The derivative thermogravimetric analysis (DTG) showed that the ammonium polyphosphate and boric acid had shifted the degradation peaks of the pine needles to lower temperatures. The cone calorimetry test results showed that the values of HRR, THR, SPR, TSP and the mass loss (%) of the pine needles treated with ammonium polyphosphate and boric acid (APP/BA = 3/2)were significantly lower than the other samples. Therefore, the APP and BA system had a better effect on the pine needles overall than the APP alone.

Opis:
The effect of the amount of pine needle oil on the properties of rigid polyurethane (RPUF) foams was investigated. The influence of pine needle oil content on the cellular morphology, physical, mechanical, and antibacterial properties of RPUF was evaluated. The addition of pine needle oil had decreased the dynamic viscosity and processing times of polyurethane (PUR) systems. It was found that the foams containing 5 wt % of pine needle oil had better mechanical properties, e.g. compressive strength, flexural strength, and impact strength. RPUF containing the highest concentration of pine needle oil, such as 15 wt %, possessed improved antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. This study confirmed that the use of pine needle oil is an effective approach to the production of RPUFs with antibacterial activity.
Zbadano wpływ dodatku olejku sosnowego na właściwości użytkowe sztywnych pianek poliuretanowych (RPUF): strukturę, właściwości fizyczne, mechaniczne i antybakteryjne. Układy poliuretanowe (PUR) modyfikowane dodatkiem olejku sosnowego charakteryzowały się mniejszą lepkością dynamiczną oraz krótszymi czasami syntezy niż układy bez dodatku. Najlepsze właściwości mechaniczne, w tym m.in. wytrzymałość na ściskanie, zginanie trójpunktowe i udarność, wykazywała pianka poliuretanowa zawierająca 5% mas. olejku sosnowego. Najlepszymi właściwościami antybakteryjnymi (względem E. coli oraz S. aureus) odznaczała się pianka zawierająca 15% mas. olejku sosnowego. Stwierdzono, że modyfikacja układów poliuretanowych dodatkiem olejku sosnowego umożliwia otrzymanie RPUFs o właściwościach antybakteryjnych.

The results of morphological and anatomical studies on Pinus uliginosa needles from newly-discovered localities of this species in Węglowiec (Bory Dolnośląskie) are presented. The data obtained were compared to similar published material on P. uliginosa needles from its loco classico in Batorow and from the lowland locality in Węgliniec Nature Reserve, and to P. sylvestris growing nearby. In terms of needle structure, all three P. uliginosa populations were slightly different. The samples analyzed differed markedly from the sample of P. sylvestris, which contradicts the hypothesis that Scots pine has had a significant influence on the gene pool of P. uliginosa.

The results of measurements were analysed statistically. The variation of the samples was generally not to large. Populations from the East Carpathians appeared different from all other examined. Two formed groups of analysed populations are separated mainly by thickness of epidermal cells, width/thickness of epidermal cell ratio, needle width and needle thickness. The differences between two groups of populations suggest their longer separation during Pleistocene.

Opis:
The anatomical and morphological diversity of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) needles was investigated in nine Polish populations grown on the experimental plots at the Forest Experimental Station of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW (Rogów, Central Poland). The experiment started in 1966 and the needle samples were collected from the trees cut down during the thinning treatment in 2016. The following needle traits were measured: (1) length, (2) width, (3) thickness, (4) cross−sectional area of the transfusion tissue, (5) epidermis thickness, (6) width to thickness of the needle cross section ratio, (7) distance between the vascular bundles, (8) number of resin ducts, and (9) length of the needle scales. The results showed that trees from the provenances differ with respect to the studied needle features, however, the differences, for individual traits, are relatively small and in most cases are statistically insignificant as measured by the Kruskal−Wallis test. Statistically significant differences (p<0.05) were found only in case of such features as the number of resin ducts and the length of needle scales. The results may suggest that the environmental conditions of the Polish lowland are not sufficiently diversified to induce clear differences between the individual morphological and anatomical traits of pine needles. However, despite the relatively small differences between the studied populations regarding individual traits, the use of the UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic mean) dendrogram, taking into consideration the combined effect of all the examined traits of needles, allowed to separate geographically the tested Polish provenances into three groups: I – mid−western (Rogów, Bolewice, Spała, Karsko, Gubin, Tabórz), II – north−eastern (Rospuda, Starzyna) and III – south−eastern (Janów Lubelski). It is suggested that this may be related both to the ability of Scots pine to adapt to local conditions as well as the possibility that the geographical groups of tested populations originated from three different main glacial refugia.

Opis:
We investigated the phenotypic variation of five morphological needle characters of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in three populations. Two of the populations occurred in bogs and the third one formed a degraded fresh pine forest showing some features of a dry pine forest. The greatest variation was found in characters a (needle length), b and d, denoting the number of stomatal rows respectively on the convex and flat sides of the needle. Conversely, characters c and e (average number of stomata per 2 mm of needle length on the convex and the flat side of the needle) were stable, with little interindividual variation. The two bog populations and the dryland population exhibited different sets of character correlations. The interpopulation differentiational detected on the basis of morphological character expression was markedly influenced by both the different edaphic conditions, and the distinct genetic structure of the studied populations.

In this paper we show spatial carbon isotope variations in black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) needles, collected in spring 2001 and autumn 2003, from trees at the coast of south-western Croatia island (Žirje) and southern Spain (Benalmadena near Malaga), respectively. Needles were segmented perpendicularly to the longer axis (base, middle and top) and each segment was analysed separately. d13C values in needles from Croatia varied between -26.65‰ to -24.43‰ (2 months old needles) and from -28.25‰ to -25.21‰ (1 year old needles), while d13C values in needles from Spain varied from -27.58‰ to -25.27‰. The difference between d13Cb (base) and d13Ct (top) in the same needle (D13Cb-t) varied from 1.85 to 2.05‰ (in young needles from Croatia), from 0,02 to 1,80‰ (young needles from Spain), and 1.16 to 2.32‰, (in old needles from Croatia). The average D13Cb-t values were 0.78‰ and 1.73‰ in Spain and Croatia, respectively. In each needle the base of the needle was always 13C-enriched as compared to the top of the same needle. This evidences that carbon isotopes are not retranslocated after its fixation into the leaf structure (after the growth process is over). Temperature variation was most probably negligible for the discovered intraneedle carbon isotope distribution. Although, the intraneedle carbon isotope inhomogeneity can be partly the result of seasonal variation in d13C of atmospheric CO2, most probably the remarkably high D13Cb-t values, and regular pattern, are predominantly resulting from isotopic and chemical composition of primary and secondary products contained in the growin part of needle and kinetic isotope fractionation during decomposition of storage materials at the base.
