This paper is based on an invited lecture given at the 10th International Workshop and Summer School "Towards Fusion Energy", which was held in Kudowa Zdrój, Poland, on June 12–18, 2011. A concise review is presented of the known experimental results on various plasma Z-pinch experiments supplied by high-voltage and high-current pulsed power generators. The most important issues and the most valuable results in this domain are highlighted. A broad class of various Z-pinches is considered, including simple inter-electrode discharges, single exploding wires, so-called X-pinches, cylindrical wire-array Z-pinches, radial wire-array discharges, conical wire-array experiments, and gas-puffed Z-pinches. Non-cylindrical Z-pinch discharges (often called plasma focus experiments) are also briefly characterized. The most important characteristics of each category of experiments are outlined. Particular attention is paid to fusion-oriented high-power Z-pinch experiments and the problems encountered in experiments with various sophisticated fusion targets. The main issues in the described Z-pinch experiments are identified. Finally, new trends in the dense Z-pinch research are described.

Opis:
Deuterium discharges in the SPEED2 plasma focus (80 kJ, 200 kV, 2 MA, 400 ns) have been found unexpectedly stable within the operational regime as a neutron source. Only at higher filling pressures (above 6 mbar) sometimes m=0 instabilities appeared in the pinch column, especially in discharges of lower efficiency (moderate dynamics and neutron yield). Enhancing the electromagnetic radiation by doping these discharges with heavy gases (e.g. neon, argon) distinctly two pinch modes are produced, the micropinch mode (MPM) or the stable column mode (SCM), with a transition regime where the initial SCM is followed by the MPM. Micropinches are local radiative collapses initiated by m=0 instabilities of low-energy- density pinch plasmas. These instabilities and the successive micropinches can be suppressed by kinetic deuterons produced during dynamical compression of high-energy-density deuterium plasma sheaths. Depending on the relaxation of this fast deuteron component the pinch column can be stabilized for several tens of nanoseconds. While the short-lived (appr. 1 ns) micropinches erratically appear as point-like successive flashes along the pinch axis with temperatures about 1 keV and about solid density the reproducible SCM, optimized with respect to the compression ratio, forms a powerful linear radiation source of temperatures and densities similar to the MPM. The SCM needs powerful (fast) drivers in order to use the kinetic ion stabilization, but not necessarily MA currents as available from the SPEED2 driver. This opens the possibility to establish the SCM also in compact experiments like SPEED3 (8 kJ, 80 kV, 0.8 MA, 300 ns) or even SPEED4 (2 kJ, 40 kV, 250 kA, 300 ns).

In the report the dynamics of the Toroidal Plasmoids formation in a Cavity of the Neck (TPCN) of plasma columns and tubes is described. The study was carried out within the MHD (magnetohydrodynamics) frames and by using the particles method. It was shown that in the fast forming neck of plasma pinch, some observed orthogonal to the current structures could be H-filaments (at the equilibrium state they are θ-pinches). These filaments are supported due to the interaction of the induced (secondary) current with magnetic field of the Z-pinch.

This article describes several applications and methods using the X pinch as a source of X-ray radiation for the radiography of dense plasma objects. These methods, in general, do not use pinholes, and instead take the advantage of the small size (<1 mm, and in some cases <3 mm) and a short X-ray emission duration (<1 ns) of the radiation source produced by an X pinch. Two of these methods, monochromatic and direct point-projection backlighting, are discussed. Experimental images of exploding wires and wire arrays obtained on the BIN, XP, and MAGPIE generators using these techniques are presented. Also included are detailed measurements made on the XP generator of the emission characteristics of X pinches using different wire materials.

The MCNP6 and MCNPX calculations for the GIT-12 device in Tomsk were performed to determine the influence of the gas-puff hardware on the neutron emission anisotropy and the neutron scattering rate. A monoenergetic 2.45 MeV neutron source and F1 and F6 tallies were declared in the simulation input. A comparison between MCNP results and the measured data was made. Differences between MCNPX and MCNP6 output data were investigated. In the experiment, two nTOF scintillation detectors with the Bicron BC-408 scintillator were used to measure the neutron waveform. Four bubble BD-PND detectors were used to estimate the amount of neutrons in different places around the neutron source.

A helium plasma produced in a 82 kJ theta pinch discharge has been seeded with carbon ions by a carbon solid rod positioned on the axis. The first shock front of the discharge ablates carbon atoms from the solid surface which are ionized and interact with the plasma. Some shock front properties (namely thickness, compression velocity and its shape) were analyzed with an ICCD-camera system taking 2-dimensional photos of the plasma continuum emitted along the axis with a time duration of 100 ns. While the influence on the shape was not found, the temporal behaviour was drastically changed when the rod was added. The shock front occurs earlier and compresses faster. An explanation remains to be given. Furthermore, the influence of the carbon impurities on the plasma parameters has been investigated by measuring the electron temperature and density by means of plasma spectroscopy comparing these results with those obtained from discharges in helium without rod. We found a decrease in the electron density about 500 ns after the shocked plasma has started to interact with the rod surface. Simultaneously increasing continuum emission and decreasing intensity of the HeII Pa line indicates a regime of recombination. No influence was found on the electron temperature.

Experiments have shown [3, 9] that a cylindrical liner can successfully confine a magnetized, hot plasma column. The technical parameters necessary for ICF applications being inaccessible so far, we have investigated volume and spark ignition in a D-T plasma compressed by an imploding liner through numerical simulations. These calculations provide an insight into the structure of both the liner and the plasma and indicate the range of parameters required for ignition and detonation in such a liner-pinch system. Typical results, corresponding to physically feasible situations will be shown and means for realising them will be mentioned. Extrapolation to advanced fuels will be briefly outlined.

The parameters of neutron emission from the neck of the condensed Z-pinch, were measured at an S-300 installation (2 MA, 100 ns). Profiled loads with central parts made from microporous deuterated polyethylene (with a density of 100 mg/cm3) were used in the experiments. Neutron emission parameters were measured by the time-of-flight (TOF) method. Neutrons were registered using four flight bases with 10 scintillation detectors which were placed at two axial and two radial directions. It was found that the mean neutron energy, determined by the TOF method, turned out to be anisotropic. The average energy of neutrons emitted along the axis towards the cathode, was shifted to higher energy (2.6-2.8 MeV) and the average energy of neutrons emitted towards the anode, was shifted to lower energy (2.1-2.3 MeV) compared to the d-d reaction neutron energy 2.45 MeV. The average energy of neutrons, emitted in two opposite radial directions, was close to 2.45 MeV. The half-width of the energy distributions reconstructed for all directions was 400-500 keV. The analysis of the experimental results demonstrated that the found phenomena could be explained by a slowly decaying high energy tail in the energy distribution of colliding deuterons. The maximal neutron yield was of 6 x 109.

Experiments were carried out on the PF-1000 plasma focus device, with a deuterium filling and with deuterium puffing from a gas-puff nozzle placed on the axis of the anode face. The current was reaching 2 MA. 15 interferometric frames from one shot were recorded with a Nd:YLF laser and a Mach–Zehnder interferometer, with 10–20 ns delay between the frames. As a result, the temporal and spatial distribution of the linear densities and the radial and axial velocities of the moving of plasma in the dense plasma column could be estimated.

The study deals with the pinch mode of magnetorheological (MR) fluids’ operation and its application in MR valves. By applying the principle in MR valves a highly non-uniform magnetic field can be generated in flow channels in such a way to solidify the portion of the material that is the nearest to the flow channel’s walls. This is in contrary to well-known MR flow mode valves. The authors investigate a basic pinch mode valve in several fundamental configurations, and then examine their magnetic circuits through magnetostatic finiteelement (FE) analysis. Flux density contour maps are revealed and basic performance figures calculated and analysed. The FE analysis results yield confidence in that the performance of MR pinch mode devices can be effectively controlled through electromagnetic means.

A conceptual design for a 200 MW hybrid fusion-fission reactor to be used as a heat source for district heating has been developed. The fission, heat-generating blanket is based on the CANDU reactor technology, while the fusion fast neutrons are provided by a high-density, pinch plasma. The basic assumption regarding the fusion neutron source is that in a pinch plasma (high-density Z-pinch and plasma focus configurations have been considered) a fusion power level of 10 MW can be achieved. An outstanding feature of the design is that no active components are necessary within the reactor containment area, all the hybrid system control being ensured by the fusion component of the reactor.

The paper presents results of preliminary measurements of the corpuscular radiation from fast z-pinch discharges, which were performed at the Prague Capillary Pinch facility within a frame of the Czech-Polish scientific collaboration programme. Time-integrated measurements were performed by means of a pinhole camera, equipped with nuclear track detectors of the CR-39 type. In order to perform time-resolved measurements the use was made of a single Faraday-type collector and a double-cup system. It was demonstrated that the fast capillary discharges can emit not only pulses of intense visible radiation and soft X-rays, but also pulses of the corpuscular radiation. An optical analysis of the particle tracks was performed. The particle flux at a distance of 20 cm from the collimator outlet was estimated to be 3.5×107 particles/cm2.

Heat integration by pinch method is used to modify the heat exchanger network of an industrial ethylene glycol plant. The aim is to reduce the energy cost by operating the plant close to the maximum energy recovery. Pinch analysis identified a pinch temperature of 483 K, a minimum heating utility of 13,490.9 MJ/ton EO, and a minimum cooling utility of 25,697 MJ/ton EO. Using the pinch decomposition diagram and the standard procedure for matching hot and cold streams, a retrofit of the heat exchangers network is developed. The modified heat exchanger network reduces the external cooling duty by 45.5% and the external heating duty by 93.3%. This promising cost savings provide enough justification for restructuring the existing ethylene glycol plant. Moreover, an additional 6% reduction in the external cooling duty can be achieved by integrating the steam turbine below the pinch point.

The discharges were operated with a maximum current of 1.5-3 MA at two devices, PF 1000 at IPFLM in Warsaw, and Stand 300 at RRC Kurchatov Institute in Moscow. At the plasma impact the 10-50 ns XUV pulse was emitted in K-shell lines from the ring or helical-like forms on the surface of the wire corona. The scenario of the production of the non-equilibrium intensities of the C and Al H-like and He-like lines is discussed considering fast transformation of magnetic field, electron beams acceleration, total ionization of the ions and fast recombination in dense and magnetized wire corona.

Opis:
The motion of deuterons in dynamical filamentary configurations of a PF pinch column has been studied with a three-dimensional numerical model. Apart from magnetic fields, the motion-induced electrical fields as well as ion-ion and ion-electron collisions have been included in the equations of deuteron motion. Calculations were performed for different numbers of filaments and its spatial distributions under different initial conditions. Energy of ions was assumed to be from 10 keV up to 200 keV. The results obtained have shown many possible modes of ion motion and have demonstrated that the current filaments can cause peculiarities observed in the angular distribution of deuterons emitted from the PF pinch column.

The plasma focus is a source of pulsed radiation, which is of interest in various fields of physics and technology. Applications include soft X-ray microscopy, soft X-ray and electron beam lithography. The plasma focus is also a highly efficient source of fast neutrons. If one applies gas puffing instead of static filling, decoupling of plasma conditions in the breakdown and compression phases can be achieved. Results of experiments with a fast valve and accompanying 2D modelling of the dynamic gas target are presented. Among other advantages of gas puffing, neutron yield could be increased up to a factor of three in appropriate experiments. The concept of gas puffing has been extensively investigated in many Z-pinch experiments including multiple gas puffs. It seems desirable to increase the efforts to understand and optimise the gas puffing option for small and large plasma focus devices.

Styrene is a valuable commodity for polymer industries. The main route for producing styrene by dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene consumes a substantial amount of energy because of the use of high-temperature steam. In this work, the process energy requirements and recovery are studied using Exergy analysis and Heat Integration (HI) based on Pinch design method. The amount of steam plays a key role in the trade-off between Styrene yield and energy savings. Therefore, optimizing the operating conditions for energy reduction is infeasible. Heat integration indicated an insignificant reduction in the net energy demand and exergy losses, but 24% and 34% saving in external heating and cooling duties, respectively. When the required steam is generated by recovering the heat of the hot reactor effluent, a considerable saving in the net energy demand, as well as the heating and cooling utilities, can be achieved. Moreover, around 68% reduction in the exergy destruction is observed.

To investigate the effect of reactor performance/configuration of biodiesel production on process parameters (mass & energy consumption, required facilities etc.), two diverse production processes (from vegetable oil) were implemented/designed using Aspen HYSYS V7.2. Two series reactors were taken into account where overall conversion was set to be 97.7% and 70% in first and second processes respectively. Comparative analysis showed that an increase in conversion yield caused to consumption reduction of oil, methanol, cold energy and hot energy up to 9.1%, 22%, 67.16% and 60.28% respectively; further, a number of facilities (e.g. boiler, heat exchanger, distillation tower) were reduced. To reduce mass & energy consumption, mass/heat integration method was employed. Applying integration method showed that in the first design, methanol, cold and hot energy were decreased by 49.81%, 17.46% and 36.17% respectively; while in the second design, oil, methanol, cold and hot energy were decreased by 9%, 60.57% 19.62% and 36.58% respectively.

A small gas puff Z-pinch device has been constructed and operated. The device has the parameters: the capacitance of energy storage capacitors 16 mi F, charging voltage 22 kV, peak current 210 kA and a quarter of current period 2.4 mi s. A three-frame Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a compact Thomson ion energy analyzer were developed for Z-pinch plasma experiment. According to the results of diagnostics, the electron density ne of the plasma right before pinch instant is larger than 5.4 × 1019/cm3, the corresponding pinch velocity v of the plasma sheath is 9.0 cm/ěs. Clear parabolas produced by neon ions Ne+, Ne2+, Ne3+ and Ne4+ on CR-39 target have been observed. The energy spectra dN/dTdů for Ne+, Ne2+, Ne3+ and Ne4+ ions were determined. The highest energies of Ne+, Ne2+, Ne3+ and Ne4+ ions emitted from our Z-pinch plasma are below 1.3 MeV.

The article deals with theoretical and experimental approaches to electroplastic deformation caused by twinning of metals. The author specifies physical fundamentals of Kinetics regarding the development of twinning caused by the excitation of electronic subsystem of metals. Physical models of new channels for the realization of twinning aroused under conditions of electroplasticity have been discussed. Mechanisms of plasticized influence of a surface electric charge have been defined as well as the contribution of a dynamic pinch-effect in the elastic plastic deformation of metals with the participation of the intrinsic magnetic field of the current. The dynamic pinch effect creates ultrasonic vibration of the lattice system while Kinetics changes and plastic deformation are stimulated increasing the amplitude of the oscillations of rectilinear dislocations and the periodic change in the position of the dislocation loops with an increase in the probability of detachment of dislocations from the stoppers. When deformed above the yield point and due to the pinch effect the intrinsic magnetic field of the current diffuses into the crystal where the diffusion rate depends both on the conductivity of the metal and on the frequency of the current. It is necessary to take into account the physical conditions for the creation of ponderomotive effects in relation to specific technically important materials for the practical use of electroplastic deformation technology, especially when processing metals with pressure.
