Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the presented study was the comparison of physical activity of students from selected countries. The key of paper selection was to find various kinds of students groups from different countries and different cultures. The author compared results of students’ physical activity.Materials and methods: The paper compare the previously published papers aboutphysical activity of students from selected countries. All respondents were examined using as an instrument the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), a standardized questionnaire which enables the investigation and comparison of activity of various population groups. Results: Analysis of results of the study showed a great differentiation among students from individual countries. In each examined group of students, males proved to be the most active gender; however, among countries characterized by the highest physical activity, the results obtained by females were sometimes higher than those concerning males from countries characterized by lower activity. The study showed that the most active students are Americans and Czechs, whereas students from Croatia and South Africa show low physical activity. Conclusions: The conducted analyses demonstrated that in each country in the study the level of total activity is higher among males than females. The differences in the results of the summary MET value in males remained within the range 2,800 – 6,500 MET, while in females - within the range 1,700 – 5,900 MET. Male students were usually characterized by a high level of physical activity, whereas female students by a moderate level. Among Polish students, similar to their contemporaries from other countries, the level of total physical activity was higher among males than females. Polish students were most often characterized by a moderate level of physical activity.

Opis:
This study is specifically concerned with the effect of regular physical activity during menstruation on the course of menstrual cycle among nullipara. Based on the author’s questionnaire, the 152 women participating in the study were divided into three groups A, B and C – depending on their level of physical activity. The physical activity at a moderate level does not significantly affect the regularity of menstrual cycles. The cultivation of moderate physical activity during menstruation does not significantly affect the duration of bleeding. Moderate physical activity is irrelevant to the abundance of menstrual bleeding. Moderate physical activity has no significant effect on menstrual pain and its duration. Women who are physically active at a moderate level throughout their menstrual cycle are less likely to experience symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) than women who are only physically active outside of menstruation and are not physically active, which may indicate that moderate physical activity during menstruation prevents symptoms of premenstrual tension syndrome. Based on the results achieved, it is not possible to clearly determine the relevance of promoting moderate physical activity, with particular emphasis on that during menstruation, among women. The study needs to be continued with particular attention paid to physical activity during the day, the influence of environmental factors and stress on the examined women, and with attention paid to the intensity of pain accompanying bleeding. However, it can be assumed that there is no justification for limiting physical activity during the menstrual bleeding phase.

Background: From the public health perspective, it is particularly important to establish links between a persons' perception of their own health and their predispositions to undertake pro-health behaviours that enable them to maintain proper functioning of their body. In the case of the paediatric population, it is crucial to emphasise that adults are responsible for the adoption and development of appropriate health-enhancing behaviours by children. The aim of this study is to verify parents' perception of the level of children’s physical activity (PA) in comparison with objective measures describing children's physical fitness. Material and methods: Material for analysis consists of the results of anthropometric tests and cardiopulmonary exercise capacity of children as well as questionnaires concerning 28,891 children completed by parents. Results: In more than 40% of the sample, the subjectively assessed level of PA was not consistent with the cardiorespiratory fitness level. It was observed that the correct assessment of the level of PA of children is more common for girls, increases with the age of the child and with the level of parental education.

Opis:
In view of new civilizational challenges of the 21st century, health promotion and education encouraging active participation in physical recreation, which should be implemented at all levels of education, within family, peer environment and local environment, become issues of particular importance. The research was carried out in the summer of 2013 and included 572 students of John Paul II State School of Higher Education in Biała Podlaska (PSW), of such degree courses as Tourism and Recreation, Public Health, Nursing, Rescue Medicine and Computer Science. The method used in the research was a diagnostic survey based on International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The aim of the study was to get to know the differentiation between the forms of recreational physical activity taken up and expected by the students of PWS and their gender, BMI and self-assessment of physical fitness. Basing on the results of the analysis it was concluded that the abovementioned independent variables have significant impact on the forms of physical activity chosen and expected by the surveyed. Studies of the literature on the subject and the results of our previous research entitle us to conclude that university students, who in the near future will constitute the intellectual elite of the country, should be aware of the influence of physical activity on general health, the importance of healthy lifestyle and their role in promoting healthy attitudes. However, the research showed that the students are not ready to perform such tasks, therefore the actions preparing them to lead a healthy lifestyle need to be intensified.

The peculiarities of the daily physical activity of the pupils of the general educational institutions of Ukraine are identified in the article. It is stressed that motor activity combines various motor actions and is defined by amount of movements performed by a person in the process of vital activity. For defining of daily motor activity it was used the methodology of timekeeping developed by scientists of Framingham State University for children and teenagers that is based on registration of human activity during a day. For defining the amount of time spent on each kind of motor activity, it was conducted a daily timekeeping of human activities: fixing of time spent on each kind in the succession as they alternated with each other. It is determined that the juveniles' specially organized physical activity makes 0,33-0,44 hrs, it is by 65-70% lower than the hygiene standards. The indices of the daily physical activity of the 11-15-year-old pupils are 31,1 - 33,49 points. The mentioned index among boys is by 0,61-5,75% higher than among girls. Index of daily motor activity among girls increases till the age of 12, after that it decreases gradually. Among boys the highest level of physical activity is revealed at the age of 13-14, after that it is observed decreasing of the results. The level of the pupils' physical activity is determined by the traditions of physical culture at school, by the available material resources, by the level of the professional skills of the teachers of physical culture, educationalists, school authorities.

Purpose: We examine physical activity levels of Polish and Turkish students to determine cross-cultural and gender differences in exercise habits. Methods: Our study assessed 50 students from Adnan Menderes University in Aydin, Turkey and 50 students from the University of Physical Education in Krakow, Poland. Physical activity was measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ; short form). Results were expressed in MET-minutes/week (Metabolic Equivalent of Task). Results: More than half of the students (52%) engaged in moderate physical activity in the week prior to the survey, while a quarter of the students (37%) engaged in vigorous physical activity. Low levels of physical activity were reported by 11% of the students. Total physical activity per week, expressed in MET-minutes/week, was significantly higher for Polish students (5,953.51 MET) than for Turkish students (3,095.45 MET). Moderate physical activity was higher among Turkish students while vigorous physical activity was higher among Polish students. Physical activity contrasts were further exemplified between genders. Polish women engaged in significantly more (p < 0.05) total physical activity than Turkish women. Total physical activity, high-level physical activity, and moderate-level physical activity differences were not significant (p > 0.05) between Polish and Turkish men. Conclusion: Polish university students engage in more physical activity than students from Turkey. Men were more physically active in both countries. More than half of Turkish students do not meet minimum weekly physical activity the World Health Organization recommends for preserving health.

Opis:
Stress is one of the single most significant factor for many physical and psychological dilemma. Long-term exposure to stress or chronic stress can lead to serious physical and psychological problems such as headaches, fatigue, depression, anxiety, stomachache, heart problems, chest pain, asthma, hypertension, liver dysfunction, diabetes, arthritis, suppressed immune system , skin conditions, irregular ministerial cycle, infertility, accelerated aging process, and premature death. As under perennial and /or continual stress condition the body releases excessive cortisol hormone that results in aforementioned issues. Physical activity may beneficial for mental and physical body system. Under intense or endurance exercise however increase total cortisol released levels far above the moderate training modalities which can be a destructive factor for people under extreme negative stress and can make worse stress health risk conditions. Thus, caution is need to be considered for people with negative stress.Nonetheless, according to the American physical activity guideline 10 minutes moderate aerobic exercise such as walking in division of 2×10 min or 3×10 min per day that can be performed throughout the week, seems to be helpful alternative for all adult in part people with psychological negative stress.

Opis:
Introduction: Proper nutrition and physical activity are very important elements in the proper functioning and development of children. The lack of daily, systematic physical effort in younger and younger age groups is a public health problem. Purpose: To evaluate the nutrition and physical activity of children attending primary school. Materials and methods: The study was conducted among 707 pupils form randomly selected elementary schools using the authors’ own questionnaire in the school year 2013/2014. The questionnaire included questions on selected dietary habits and physical activity as well as the socio-economic conditions of the families. Results: Among the studied children, 88.6% consumed 4 or 5 meals a day. There was a statistically significant relationship between the number of meals consumed and the age of the children. Breakfast was consumed by 86.4% of children, more often residents of the city than the village (88.0% vs. 81.7%, p <0.05). Daily consum-ption of second breakfast was declared by 71.5% of boys and 74.2% of girls. The vast majority of the studied students (86.8%) have always taken part in physical education classes. Outdoor leisure time was declared by 75% of the surveyed children. Rural students showed greater involvement in outdoor activities than students from the city (86.1% vs. 70.2%, p <0.001). A total of 62.2% of boys and 51.8% of girls (p <0.05) participated in sports activities. Conclusions: Inappropriate nutrition and lack of physical activity affected both girls and boys, and the abnormalities were dependent on where they lived and were age-related.

Physical activity (PA) is an important modifiable risk factor for endometrial cancer (EC). PA has been studied using diverse measures including metabolic equivalent of task MET, duration, frequency and subjective levels, but for practical reasons most of epidemiological studies use questionnaires rather than objective measures to document PA. Moderate-intense daily PA has a protective effect and have a 20-40% reduced risk of EC. In this rewiev complex and variable behaviour, and the ability of epidemiological studies to determine the relationship between PA and EC has been discussed.

Introduction. Physical activity is known to be an important factor influencing health throughout human life. This issue has become crucial for public health due to the aging of the population in both developed and developing countries. Aim. is to present a literature review on the forms of physical activity undertaken by the elderly, as well as on issues related to physical activity and the population aging. Material and methods. The study was prepared on the basis of a review of Polish and foreign literature. The following databases and data sources were used: EBSCO, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar. An additional source of data were the websites of the Central Statistical Office. Strictly defined key phrases were used during the collection of literature. The work has been divided into thematic subsections on the aging of the society, the impact of physical activity on health and the main topic, i.e. forms of physical activity selected by the elderly. Analysis of the literature. The number of elderly people in Polish society has increased by almost 3.7 million over three decades. Therefore, an important topic is prophylaxis aimed at increasing the number of days in good health, largely covering the broadly understood activation of the elderly. The available data indicate that only 12% of elderly people undertake physical activity once a week. The most common form of spending free time actively is walking (as many as 73% of people in this population declare this form of physical activity in one of the presented studies). Conclusion. Organized forms of physical activity are undertaken much less frequently by the analyzed age group mainly due to financial limitations and limited availability of sports infrastructure

Opis:
Physical activity is one of the most important elements of a healthy lifestyle, and its lack or insufficient amounts can lead to serious health disorders. There are many adult diseases which are associated with the behaviour, lifestyle during puberty, including physical inactivity. It was therefore decided in this study to present the physical activity of young people from six countries in the world in the context of different variables. The following countries: Brazil, Spain, Poland, Czech Republic, Norway and Nepal were selected for comparison. Although all studies used the same standardized research tool, ie. the International Physical Activity Questionnaire IPAQ, in the course of analysis, the authors encountered difficulties with comparability, associated with the usage of various methods and data processing, which could result in different or reduced comparability. Consequently, it was decided not to make a detailed comparative analysis of individual research results and the presentation of the key conclusions brought about selected studies worldwide. Analyses of studies which have been conducted in different cultural contexts, confirm once again the thesis of the decline in physical activity levels with age for both girls and boys. Gender quite substantially differentiated physical efforts in adolescents. Girls at the age of adolescence are less physically active than boys. It was also noted that the increase of sedentary behaviour among children and adolescents and their disastrous consequences have an impact on the health and life in this age group, the studies of sedentary lifestyle have become a very important subject of many studies. Girls are still “more sedentary” than boys. Many authors, in order to ensure the reliability and relevance of their research, complied with the objective instrument eg. accelerometer or metabolic analyzer.

Objectives: Activities of daily living are currently the simplest form of activity. For many people this is the only activity in which they participate. In this connection, it is important to determine the level of physical activity connected with daily habits including occupational activities. The main goal of the presented study has been to assess the level of activities of daily living in different age groups and its differentiation by season and working (WD) and non-working days (NWD). Material and Methods: The study group (urban citizens, N = 106) was divided into young (Y) (N = 40), middle-aged (M) (N = 38), and senior (S) (N = 28) participants. The daily step number on 7 consecutive days during 4 seasons between June 2012 and 2013 was counted objectively using pedometers. The long-form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was completed each season as a subjective assessment. Results: The daily step number for the whole group for the year was (median) 6615 (range: 3648–10 709), fewer than recommended. The median (Me) was highest in group M (Me = 6994, range: 3648–10 709) followed by Y (Me = 6957, range: 4094–10 321) and S (Me = 5469, range: 3743–8955). The lowest daily step number occurred in winter (M = 6208, Y = 6063, S = 5242), and the highest in spring (Y = 7385) or summer (M = 7717; S = 6095). All groups had a greater daily step number on WDs compared to NWDs (Y: 8411 vs. 5744, M: 7612 vs. 5839, S: 6327 vs. 4580; p < 0.01 for all). Pedometer-tracked values did not correlate with the IPAQ results. Conclusions: Activity level in Polish urban society is low, especially on NWDs and in colder months. The daily number of steps is highest in the middle-aged group, which may be connected with working status. Objective methods are recommended for assessing physical activity level. In the face of maintaining a high level of morbidity of civilization diseases, the etiology of which is to a large degree connected with scarcity of physical activity (obesity, coronary heart disease, type II diabetes mellitus etc.), an education dealing with participation in physical culture has become an important social task. In order to be efficient the process should be aimed at developing psychological and behavioural determinants of physical activity but also building social relationships enhancing an active life style. One of the mechanisms through which social environment may influence physical activity of children and youth is social support. The paper presents the results of the study of four kinds of social support for physical activity (instrumental, informational, emotional and evaluational) received by pupils at the age of 14 to 18 from their parents, peers and physical education teachers. The results suggest that the most often received form of support is emotional one (especially from parents and peers) and the least frequent – instrumental support, which is a more direct form of support than the above mentioned one. Moreover, the frequency with which respondents receive social support for their physical activity significantly differentiates particular categories of significant others, with the most rare support from physical education (PE) teachers. Also an interesting phenomenon was observed of parents’decreasing social support for physical activity of girls as they are growing up.

A rational organization of leisure time should be a priority for the family environment. This problem is particularly important in the era of modern civilization, dominated by passive forms of recreation, resulting in many hours spent sitting in front of the TV and the computer screen. The role of parents should be based on a conscious and deliberate preparation of children and young people for a proper organization of their leisure time. It is important that parents’ activities encourage young people to participate in individual and organized forms of physical activity (sport, tourism, and recreation). Previous studies clearly indicate that physical activity in childhood influences the physical activity in adulthood. The processes of awakening interest, searching for patterns of behavior and forming habits related to various types of physical activity are all elements of lifelong learning.

Opis:
Introduction. Menopause is the time when the female body goes through substantial endocrine changes resultant from the gradual phasing out of the reproductive activity of the ovaries. Consequently, post-menopausal women face some perimenopausal symptoms. These symptoms affect everyday physical and psychological functioning to various extent, and result in certain limitations. Aim. The aim of this paper was to study which limitations are most difficult for postmenopausal women, and how menopause symptoms affect women’s physical activity and satisfaction with life, as these are important components of quality of life. Materials and methods. The study involved 60 postmenopausal women. We used our own questionnaire. Results. We did not find the remaining relationships enumerated in research questions: the impact of menopausal syndromes on the frequency of physical activity, on its intensity, and on satisfaction with life, nor with the impact of subjective health on intensity of physical effort. Conclusions. We confirmed the relationship between intensity of physical effort and satisfaction with life and the relationship between subjective assessment of one’s health and the frequency of physical activity.

Opis:
Introduction: The progressive nature of multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with numerous neurological deficits, leading gradually to deteriorating health and to disability. Purpose: The aim of this study was a subjective assessment of the physical and occupational activity of individuals with MS depending on the clinical form of the disease. Materials and methods: We used the original to conduct the research, with 28 closed questions. The study was carried out from December 1, 2018, to January 31, 2019, following approval by the Bioethics Committee of the Medical University of Bialystok, among persons belonging to the Association for Helping Sick People for Multiple Sclerosis in Białystok and patients of the Neurology Department of the University Clinical Hospital in Bialystok. The study sample comprised 50 people diagnosed with MS, 41 women and 9 men. Results: The most frequently occurring clinical form of MS was relapsing-remitting (68%). In this form, most participants had good physical fitness (44%). In those with the progressive-recurrent form (50%), very poor physical fitness was subjectively noted. Of those with the relapsing-remitting type of MS, 50% were professionally active, while none of the participants with the progressive-recurrent form were. Both the physical and occupational activities of MS patients were frequently limited by fatigue, balance disturbances, and movement difficulties. Fatigue was the most common symptom for most individuals with MS (82%). Conclusion: MS has a significant impact on both the physical activity and occupational functioning of patients. In the clinical form of MS, relapsing-remitting, patients’ physical fitness was better.

Mobile health applications provide individuals with a mobile tool that can be tailored to meet various health needs and physical activity goals, which is particularly important during the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated social distancing protocols. The consequence that the pandemic has on the mental health of university students has prompted and increased the demand of physical activity interventions. The aim of this study was to determine the self-perceived effects of mobile health applications on physical activity participation among university students. Participants included students registered in one of the faculties at a university in Johannesburg. Data collection took place by means of an electronic questionnaire using Google Forms as a platform, completed by a sample of 192 students. The findings in the study reflected that majority of university students use health applications to increase physical activity levels or to track current activity levels. Participants also indicated that specific health applications were used to set goals, monitor progress and receive feedback. Aerobic activities proved to be the more popular type of physical activity in comparison to anaerobic activity. This study concluded that health applications can be used as a tool to facilitate and promote physical activity participation in the university student population.

Opis:
The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the accuracy of steps and heart rate measurement of wrist fitness trackers at different prices. Four healthy college students voluntarily tested three wrist fitness bands and a sports watch (Xiaomi Mi Band, Fitbit Charge HRm, Fitbit Surge, and sports watch Polar M400). Subjects performed two sets of 10 series of 100 steps wearing the fitness trackers on an indoor track in two situations: walking and jogging. In the walking situation, the subjects wore a winter coat and gloves. The variables measured were the number of steps, the heart rate, and the level of error. The steps error percentage for all four devices was lower than 8%. The Fitbit Surge registered significantly more steps in the walking situation (p < 0.001). No significant differences were found in the steps measurements in the jogging situation (p = 0.138). In the jogging situation, significantly lower values in the heart rate measurements for the Xiaomi Mi Band, Fitbit Charger HR, and Fitbit Surge were found (p < 0.001). The results showed that the wearable fitness trackers were relatively accurate for tracking steps (on average, there was a level of error of 2–6%). The assessment of the steps was more accurate in the jogging situation (higher and faster arm swing) than in the walking situation, which involved wearing coats and gloves. The results showed that the wearable fitness trackers that were tested underestimate the heart rate with a level of error of approximately 6–11%. The step error was lower in the walking situation (less mobility of the devices). The price of the devices that were tested did not affect the accuracy of the steps and heart rate assessment. Further studies with a larger sample and more type of devices are needed to confirm these results.
