PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE
Opis:
The paper presents an attempt at synthetic expression of main ideas forming the scientific output of Professor Janusz Gockowski. His works are interpreted as multi-layered attempt at forming a rationalistic utopia that would provide science, as a specifically human capacity of aspiring to knowledge, a due place in institutional and axiological structure of contemporary world. This project consists of various layers: critical, diagnostic, therapeutic and descriptive-analytic that complement each other and form together an original and impressive work.

A few "ideological remarks" are also made.

RATIONALITY
Opis:
In the paper I put to analysis the reticulated model of scientific change, introduced by Larry Laudan in his Science and Values, aiming at reconstruction of the concept of rationality it presupposes. In elaborating on the model's structure I draw on Jurgen Habermas' s theory of speech acts and discuss the concept of instrumental rationality. I argue that in the area of philosophy of science, the model heralds the demise of a classical ideal of rationality, based solely on the notion of justification of judgments. My claim is that reticulated model demands that the analytical paradigm, the scope of which remains confined to a semantic dimension of science, should be replaced with a properly understood instrumental model of rationality, displaying both semantic and pragmatic facet of cognition.

Opis:
Even a preliminary review of philosophical works left by Archbishop Joseph Życiński reveals that he had a clearly outlined philosophical program. Unfortunately, his premature death has not allowed him to fully implement it. His early fascination with science resulted in his original approach to philosophy of science. Rational methods employed by science turned his attention to rationality as an ontological property of the world. This, in turn, led him to an idea of a renewal of metaphysics (although he never used this expression). New style of metaphysics should consist in maintaining traditional 'big questions of philosophy' but treating them with more extensive help of analytic method. This approach should also elaborate an analysis of mutual relations between various philosophical systems. Życiński believed that Whitehead's style of doing philosophy could provide an inspiration to this kind of renewed metaphysics. After becoming a bishop his interests turned to more practical issues related to the contemporary increase of irrationality. He extensively wrote against postmodernism and religious fundamentalism, especially as opposing biological theory of evolution.

The paper presents a short survey of standpoints in the philosophy of science related to the problem of the philosophical assumptions of science. These assumptions refer to the special kind of philosophical beliefs that scientists might not be aware of and that create a peculiar foundation of their work. The paper represents the point of view of culture studies. In this framework, science is described as one of the spheres of culture. The metaphysical assumptions of scientific theories as reconstructed by some philosophers are briefly presented. Scientific studies, as seen from the culture studies perspective, treat both philosophy and science as the spheres of culture. In respect to this view, the paper scrutinizes the historically changing philosophical concepts of science (from those, which perceive science as an autonomous system to those that stress its relations to other socio-cultural phenomena) as well as some controversial issues related to the problem of the philosophical assumptions of science.

Scientists, who have made significant contributions to the deepening of knowledge in their area of research, often engage in discussions concerning the ultimate explanations of the Universe. This is particularly visible in cosmology for the theories presented directly refer to the major questions raised by the philosophers such as the origin and the fate of the Universe, the nature of the physical laws and the existence of God. Stephen Hawking has made himself known as one of the most vocal speakers in this regard by insisting that the no-boundary Hartle-Hawking model can be used to explain away the need for any external agent in the creation of the Universe. In his recent popular book entitled The Grand Design written together with Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking declared the death of philosophy on the grounds that it did not stood up to the challenges of science by not answering the ultimate questions the way science is now capable of doing. The article aims at demonstrating that Hawking’s and Mlodinow’s radical claims rest on very strong and ill-justified philosophical assumptions of the model dependent realism. Although it is a philosophically legitimate standpoint, its reductive character does not permit the extent of generalization as suggested in The Grand Design.

This is a review of research conducted by the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and the Copernicus Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in the field of the history of philosophy of nature and the history of philosophy of science in Poland in the inter-war period. In spite of the domination of positivistic philosophy that tended to ignore philosophy of nature, this kind of philosophizing was quite popular in Poland. The review begins with a summary of works related to the history of science, and then deals, in some detail, with works on the theory of evolution and the theory of relativity, especially with their philosophical aspects. The remaining part of the review is devoted to the principal personalities of that period, namely: Władysław Heinrich, Władysław Natanson, Tadeusz Grabowski, Marian Smoluchowski, Zygmunt Zawirski and Joachim Metallmann.

It is sometimes argued that beauty and science have nothing in common. This is not necessarily true. When speaking of beauty in science we are touching two branches of knowledge: aesthetics and physics. We show that they are connected, permeate each other and work together to give good scientific results. Scientific theories and aesthetics theories exhibit some similarities not only during the creation phase, but also during the application phase. We examine two aesthetic criteria, namely symmetry and simplicity, which are valuable tools in choosing the correct scientific theory.

Understanding how science is created and developed is a very complex problem. Many claim that once in a while the science goes through periods of so-called “revo-lutions” – diametric changes in the perception of the reality, that change the way we see the world. Such a vision of the development of knowledge is particularly evident in the history of physics. Do similar breakthroughs take place in other sciences, such as biology or chemistry, as well? Our main objective is to demonstrate that the scien-tific revolutions in biology can have a specific, local, character and concern only some particular branches of biology. This hypothesis will be discussed by analyzing the impact of microbiomics on the concept of the organism.

His way of presenting philosophical ideas in a strict contact with empirical sciences arose great interest and found several talented followers. In the Jagiellonian Library in Cracow the manuscript is preserved bearing the title 'Theory of Cognition'; it was written by Heinrich in 1912. The author presents and critically assesses his 'philosophy of nature' as it can be reconstructed from the above mentioned manuscript.

PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE
Opis:
The principal function of science is striving for knowledge; cognitive aims and values identified by methodology should serve this function. Critical rationalist K. Popper pointed to ever better explanations of phenomena as the aim of science. Apart from the causal explanation by means of natural laws, functional (e.g. in biology) and intentional explanations (e.g. in psychology) are possible, as well. According to some authors (Elster, Grobler), the functionalism in the social sciences is based on an analogy with the biological evolution. Attempts to give intentional explanations disclose the great complexity of cultural and social interpersonal interactions. Besides, the explanation of phenomena takes different forms depending upon the type represented by a particular domain of science. In the 20th-century philosophy of science, one can distinguish four main currents: logical, methodological, historical and sociological; the function and the aims of science were presented within these currents in different ways. I illustrate this diversity by an example of possible interpretations of the discovery of DNA structure. Subsequently, I refer to the position of N. Koertge – an American supporter of Popperian approach – who rightly resists claims that non-cognitive values should be included in science into the context of justification. At the end, I remind K. Ajdukiewicz’s views on the topic of the aims of science.

Examining the historical development of scientific concepts is important for understanding the structured routines within which these concepts are currently used as goal-directed tools in experiments. To illustrate this, I outline how the concepts of mental imagery and hallucinations each draw on an older interdependent set of associations that, although nominally discarded, continues to structure their current independent uses for pursuing discrete experimental goals. In doing so, I highlight how three strands of literature offer mutually instructive insights into how the uses of current scientific concepts contribute to experimental practices. The first strand of literature includes recent scholarship examining how the uses of scientific concepts can enable scientific practices (e.g., Boon 2012, Brigandt 2012, Feest 2010, Steinle 2012), the second strand comes from the technoscientific studies focused on non-human agency (Pickering 1995), and the third draws attention to how the functions of concepts are grounded by the set of historically contingent experimental practices (e.g., Canguilhem 2008, Tiles 1984).

The transposition of  the theological expression into the framework of  epistemology suggested by the contemporary philosophy of science is a long-desired project. The presented article offers an overview of the different epistemological and methodological issues that arise when this expression is carried out in the common sense paradigm. It turns that once the necessary change into the mode of knowledge acquisition of contemporary science is made, one can significantly improve theology’s both methodological and conceptual foundations. In particular, this concerns the use of abstract concepts to better penetrate the intricacies of the Divine nature as well as the non-classical logics to improve theology’s inferential basis. The resulting question of the contextuality of theology, namely, its dependence on the conceptual framework and the picture of the world, is also surveyed. Consequently, theology can be perceived as a lexically open project. In conclusion it is argued that while the contemporary theology should retain its common sense exposition for the pastoral and catechetical purposes that allows for the efficient transmission of faith through intuitive knowledge, the state-of-the-art theological research must reach out to to abstract conceptual frameworks to assure the depth of its penetrative insight.

Methods and Applications (Heller, 2011). This seminal paper has founded further growth of the ‘philosophy in science’ and become the reference point in the methodological discussions, especially in Poland. On the 40th anniversary of Philosophical Problems in Science we wanted to make this paper freely available to the international public by reprinting its English version. Philosophy of philosophy, also called metaphilosophy, is a very interesting field of human intellectual activity. It shows not only what philosophy and its goals are, but it teaches philosophers a lot about themselves. John Henry Newman (1801–1890) in his work described the nature and role of philosophy as „organized, and therefore living knowledge”. He attached great importance to tell his listeners and readers what should characterize true philosopher as well.It is worth to knowing, what the idea of philosophy and the philosopher described and promoted by Newman (who was called – with good reason – the „Plato of Oxford” and „English Socrates”) was, and how philosophy can be a way of maturing our humanity and be a method to transform the world. Opis:
In the article ‘Stanislaw Lem’s philosophy of science’, the author concentrates on evolutionary fastening of Lem’s vision of the world in the first part of the text. In the second one, the author takes notice to the fact that Lem’s philosophy of science has certain related parts with Karl Popper’s philosophy of science. Both thinkers dealt with a common range of subjects and lots of their deliberations had a very similar expression. Undoubtedly, Lem was inspired by Popper but he was not an imitator of his statements. Lem, as an original visionary, in his thoughts used to leave the area of Popper-shaped philosophy and reached wider areas conceiving visions of the future science, that were characteristic to him. Lem’s vision of underdefined reality happening before our very eyes with the next dice rolls, makes us think of Popper’s criticism of faith in the absolute truth of scientific theories: we cannot know anything with a hundred per cent certainty. With reference to Lem’s thoughts, the author answers two questions in this text: Why falsification appears to work? Is it because the world is probabilistic? We are unable to gather complete information because of the system complexity we are in. If we were able to do it, would Popper’s falsification be invalidated?

Opis:
The study of the growing complexity of the physical world is of great value to many scientific disciplines, including philosophy of nature, complexity theory, thermodynamics, and others. Here, I propose a systematic and quantitative method of describing the process of natural complexification throughout cosmic history, based on a list of the topical categories of PACS® 2008: Physics and Astronomy Classification Scheme 2008, published by the American Institute of Physics. I assume that each of the selected 349 level-3 categories corresponds to a certain subset of natural phenomena, and I group them according to their first appearance in natural history. By analyzing their distribution, I derive certain qualitative and (tentatively) quantitative generalizations concerning the pace and scale of the growth of natural complexity. I contrast this approach with the results achieved by other methods and discuss its relevance to selected topics in philosophy of nature and philosophy of science.

Opis:
In this paper we present the opinions of Ludwik Silberstein (1872-1948) on the question of causality in the scientific investigations. The discussion is based on the examples taken from physics and astronomy. Silberstein is convinced that the principle of causality is an important heuristic law, a different kind of law of nature (as, for example, Kepler’s laws or Ohm’s law).
