What kind of realism - if any - are we allowed to endorse? It is often stated that, in order to provide realism with a solid foundation, we need having recourse to a reality that is totally independent of thought (and let alone of language). This is taken to be the key thesis of realism. But many philosophers reply that, even when we imagine a world totally devoid of human presence, we must use human concepts. From this point of view, conceptualization does not seem to be an optional we can get rid of, but rather a built-in component of the nature of human beings.

The author identifies and discusses the most important elements of Étienne Gilson’s thought which emanate out of his articulation and defense of the Western Creed. To the question: why Gilson, why now?, the author offers a following answer: because we need to champion the Western Creed, defend philosophical realism, rightly interpret the history of philosophy, correctly comprehend Christian philosophy, and show that modernist and postmodernist systems are arbitrary. The author maintains that Gilson delivers us with the realist philosophy of the human person, shows us the undeniable advantages of philosophical realism, and formulates an original notion of Christian philosophy which appreciates that genuine philosophy is non-systematic in its nature, and that it can expose the failure of modernist philosophies that strive to be systems.

Opis:
The author attempts to answer the question concerning whether or not philosophy is needed in seminaries. In light of his analysis, it can be concluded that philosophical studies for future priests are a serious alternative to the fideistic positions often adopted by Catholics. The presence of philosophy in the seminary curriculum is supported by: (1) the need for building intellectual foundations of the religious faith professed by a cleric; the faith which cannot do without reason and abstain from justifying the rationale of its content; 2) the need for introducing the alumnus to the mysteries of the classical philosophy of being which can equip him with a better understanding of human nature and the surrounding reality. In this way, the seminarian: (1) acquires a reasonable belief that the human mind is able to know the objective and universal truth, including the truth about God as the Ultimate Cause of all that exists; (2) is able to enter into an intelligent dialogue about the truth with an increasingly globalized world.

The article is aimed to show how the non-Thomistic understanding of the human soul determine the understanding of the human being. The author discusses the following problems: 1) delayed animation, 2) the reductionist idea of the human soul (Descartes and William James), and 3) anima separata. All reductionist approaches to the soul necessarily lead to a limitation or negation of the subjectivity of the human person. In turn, the absolutization of the human spirit leads to a dualistic or idealistic vision of the human being. The proposition of St. Thomas Aquinas, in the light of which the human soul is necessarily assigned to the body, shows an integral image of man, confirmed in his external and internal experience.

The article provides evidence that the idealistic ideologies are based on The Same in the ontology of Plato, and that they identify security with peace; the realist ideologies are based on The Third in Plato’s ontology, and they identify security with war and peace; finally, the materialist-empirical ideologies are based on The Other in the same ontology, and they identify security with war. This evidence is further used in an attempt to prove that security is best facilitated by the system based on the realist philosophical concept, therefore with mixed government – as in The Third. Plato discussed such mixed government in the framework of the idea of aristocratic-democratic system, whereas Aristotle – within the framework of the idea of politeia, a system of the middle class. Today, the notion of mixed government seems to be expressed by the idea of deliberative democracy (Jürgen Habermas and John Rawls) which overcomes and blends liberal democracy and republican democracy – a democracy of Citizens as distinguishable from citizen democracy. This newest concept of deliberative democracy considers security and the guarantee of security as tied to the Citizens competently communicating with each other, making agreements, reaching consensuses and compromises.

The article is intended to present arguments for the cultivation of philosophy as “sapiential” or wisdom-oriented knowledge whereby human knowledge is realized most fully. The author claims, first, that philosophy has indispensable heuristic value because it considers the understanding of the world and man in the context of the question “why;” the search for an answer to this fundamental question is an expression of the human person’s natural inclination to explain the reality in which he lives. Secondly, he argues that classical philosophy is not only the explanation of the reality, but it is a way of forming man; therefore it is a proposal for a method of philosophical education that is an interesting alternative to contemporary forms of practicism. The reflections are based on the legacy of the Lublin Philosophical School (Poland).

Opis:
The article is focused on the Lublin Philosophical School; it explains its name, presents its founders, reveals the causes of its rise, and introduce the specific character of the School’s philosophy. It starts with stating the fact that in the proper sense, the term “Lublin Philosophical School” describes a way of cultivating realistic (classical) philosophy developed in the 1950s by a group of philosophers at the Catholic University of Lublin, Poland. The Lublin Philosophical School is characterized by cognitive realism (the object of cognition is really existing being), maximalism (taking up all existentially important questions), methodological autonomy (in relation to the natural-mathematical sciences and theology), transcendentalism in its assertions (its assertions refer to all reality), methodological-epistemological unity (the same method applied in objectively cultivated philosophical disciplines), coherence (which guarantees the objective unity of the object), and objectivity (achieved by the verifiability of assertions on their own terms, which is achieved by relating them in each instance to objective evidence). The term is the name of the Polish school of realistic (classical) philosophy that arose as a response to the Marxism that was imposed administratively on Polish institutions of learning, and also as a response to other philosophical currents dominant at the time such as phenomenology, existentialism, and logical positivism.

The article is concentrated on the Lublin Philosophical School which came into being in the institutional framework of the Department of Philosophy at the Catholic University of Lublin, Poland; it describes its achievements, which took place at different stages of the School’s development, as well as the School’s new initiatives and challenges. The development of the School was connected with the involvement of new people and successive generations of new students who joined in the cultivation of realistic philosophy. One can regard the years 1950–1966 as the first stage of the School’s development, in which the School’s program was formulated. The following stages are the years 1967–1980, and 1981–2004, and the years that follow, in which new generations of students who take up inquiries in the spirit of the School’s program arrive. The article also explains the reasons why today the Lublin Philosophical School cannot be identified with the Department of Philosophy of the Catholic University of Lublin, but rather with a special style of cultivating philosophy.

Opis:
In modern science, the theory of probability is one of the basic tools. Scientists using probability often refer to its objective interpretation. They emphasize that their probabilistic hypotheses concern objective facts, not degrees of belief. Accordingly, the following questions arise: What is the meaning of this type of probabilistic hypothesis? Is the assumption of objectivity necessary? The paper addresses these questions by analyzing objective probability in the context of the scientific debate on determinism. Two types of arguments will be presented. On the one hand, there is the assertion that objective probability can exist only in an indeterministic world. Then, on the other hand - I analyze the assertions of those who believe in the co‑existence of objective probability and determinism. As a result I show that the acceptance of deterministic and indeterministic fields as possible areas where objective probability can occur is extremely problematic. Depending on the chosen area we encounter different types of problems. Therefore, I show that a significant number of these problems are associated with the acceptance of incorrect metaphysical assumptions. And finally, I postulate that the objectivity of probability (and assumptions pertaining to it) can be reduced (without any losses) to the epistemic variant.

Opis:
The term „Lublin Philosophical School” refers to the mode of philosophizing devised in the 1950’s at the catholic University of lublin. After a brief history, the paper first discusses some methodological features of this mode and the social role of philosophy as a self-awareness of culture. Employing the School’s philosophy, the paper then considers the issue of post-truth and that of the value-ladenness of science. The post-truth approach replaces evidence with emotions, and in consequence, argumentation is replaced with power. This in turn threatens the human person, her rationality and freedom. Admitting that science is value-laden and values are subjective leads to denying the cognitive status of science. Lublin philosophy offers such a concept of value and scientific knowledge which allows one to solve the problem created by the valueladenness of science. Thus, the paper shows that the lublin School’s philosophy can provide answers to contemporary problems and evaluate intellectual developments of culture.

How is an advanced critique of the foundations of the social sciences, in particular the foundations of sociology possible with the use of Karol Wojtyła’s philosophical anthropology and critical realism at the same time? Krzysztof Wielecki undertakes such a task in his research into the conditions of any systematically incomplete sociological theory of social action. If the initial thesis about the incompleteness of the theory truly determines the fate of the status of the logical values of the theory – truth, falsehood, or nonsense – its proof from the field of philosophical anthropology is worth seeing in the light of some metatheory, because only some metatheoretical position can validate it. Indeed, critical realism is such a position in Krzysztof Wielecki’s research. The confrontation of critical realism as a paradigm with Karol Wojtyła’s philosophical anthropology reveals the possibility of an enriched critique of the foundations of contemporary sociology in general.

Opis:
Hilary Putnam (1926–2016) was prone to change his mind on variety of philosophical issues and almost constantly to modify his views. The last period of the development of his philosophy is known as the phase of commonsense or natural realism, eloquently presented in his 1994 Dewey Lectures. This paper is focused on three facets of his position and tries to identify three difficulties it encounters. Firstly, Putnam claims that in the contemporary realism debate we have, on the one hand, proponents of extravagant metaphysical realism, and, on the other hand, advocates of various versions of irresponsible antirealism. Unfortunately, the delineation of the debate is too coarse-grained, since there are many forms of metaphysical realism, and lumping together various antirealisms is confusing and unhelpful. Secondly, Putnam’s naïve direct realism in the philosophy of perception seems incompatible with his transactional account of perception. Thirdly, for some time Putnam was under a spell of Wittgensteinian quietism that distorted the true character of his philosophical ideas.
Artykuł dotyczy trzech aspektów stanowiska w nich wyłożonego, a następnie ulepszanego i uzupełnianego.

Opis:
The background to the deliberations presented in this article is the contemporary chaos of views surrounding the relation between pedagogy and philosophy. As a point of reference in this discussion the author recalls the position of the German classical pedagogue Johann Friedrich Herbart (1776-1841). The concept of Herbart's philosophical pedagogy was shown in three parts. The first was the reconstruction of the vision of dependence between pedagogy and philosophy based on the statement of the German pedagogue as well as the later critic Bogdan Nawroczyn´ ski. The issues which were resolved were education and the philosophy of pedagogy. The second chapter is focused on the Herbart understanding of the concept or idea. Using this term an attempt was made to show the realistic sources of the author's philosophical and pedagogical position. In particular the metaphysical, ethical and aesthetic aspect of the idea was discussed which create a basis for his pedagogical implementation. The philosophical character of Herbart's pedagogical theory shows itself in its entirety in his “pure idea of pedagogy”. Contrary to that of other German pedagogues it does not concern the project of education referring to transcendental philosophy but about the connection between pedagogics and ethical ideas. Recognition of the link between ethical virtue and education is the answer to the question of the relationship between pedagogy and philosophy.

The main purpose of the paper is analysis of some problems referred to methodological understanding of the process to naturalize philosophy of science. This process can be considered as justification of philosophical thesis by scientific facts, and also as application of the methods of justification, which are effective in natural sciences, to philosophy of science. These procedures are often called philosophical interpretation of scientific facts, and their methodological validity is taken under consideration. This problem is analysed on the two examples, which are related to realism-antirealism controversy. One of them is the final argument for scientific realism. The second is the Arthur Fine’s Natural Ontological Attitudes.

This article introduces the life and work of Mieczysław Albert Krąpiec (1921-2008)—a Polish philosopher, theologian, humanist, co-founder of the Lublin Philosophical School, rector of the Catholic University of Lublin, initiator and chairman of the scientific committee of The Universal Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Krąpiec created a coherent philosophical system that, by a metaphysical explanation, encompassed the whole of reality that is accessible to human cognition. According to the author, Krąpiec’s philosophy is the greatest achievement in classical philosophy in Poland and in the world in the twentieth century, both with respect to its comprehensive scope and its meritorious importance; for the vision of the world that it reveals shows not only the human person’s unity and harmony with the reality that surrounds him, but also his openness to a connection with the transcendent Absolute.
