Opis:
Magnetizing roasting is an important pre-treatment technique for beneficiation of hematite and limonite ores. Reduction mechanisms of these iron minerals have been fully studied while the mechanism of reduction of chlorite is not well understood. In this study, a reduction roasting study examining the phase change of chlorite with roasting temperature was undertaken. The major finding from this study was that chlorite partially was reduced to magnetite by carbon at 750 ⁰C, and the newly formed magnetite was finely disseminated within quartz and olivine. It was demonstrated that these locked magnetite particles would be reported to iron concentrate by low intensity magnetic separation resulting in high impurity content, especially SiO2 and Al2O3 contents in the concentrate.

Phase-change materials (PCM) can be used to reduce thermal stress and improve thermal comfort for workers wearing protective clothing. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of PCM in protective clothing used in simulated work situations. We hypothesized that it would be possible to optimize cooling performance with a design that focuses on careful positioning of PCM, minimizing total insulation and facilitating moisture transport. Thermal stress and thermal comfort were estimated through measurement of body heat production, body temperatures, sweat production, relative humidity in clothing and subjective ratings of thermal comfort, thermal sensitivity and perception of wetness. Experiments were carried out using 2 types of PCM, the crystalline dehydrate of sodium sulphate and microcapsules in fabrics. The results of 1 field and 2 laboratory experimental series were conclusive in that reduced thermal stress and improved thermal comfort were related to the amount and distribution of PCM, reduced sweat production and adequate transport of moisture.

Values of energy supply and demand vary within the same timeframe and are not equal. Consequently, to minimise the amount of energy wasted, there is a need to use various types of energy storing systems. Recently, one can observe a trend in which phase change materials (PCM) have gained popularity as materials that can store an excess of heat energy. In this research, the authors ana-lysed paraffin wax (cheese wax)’s capability as a PCM energy storing material for a low temperature energy-storage device. Due to the relatively low thermal conductivity of wax, the authors also analysed open-cell ceramic Al2O3/SiC composite foams’ (in which the PCM was dispersed) influence on heat exchange process. Thermal analysis on paraffin wax was performed, determining its specific heat in liquid and solid state, latent heat (LH) of melting, melting temperature and thermal conductivity. Thermal tests were also performed on thermal energy container (with built-in PCM and ceramic foams) for transient heat transfer. Heat transfer coefficient and value of accumulated energy amount were determined.

Opis:
Phase change materials (PCMs) are widely used in numerous engineering fields because of their good heat storage properties and high latent heat of fusion. However, a big group of them has low thermal conductivity and diffusivity, which poses a problem when it comes to effective and relatively fast heat transfer and accumulation. Therefore, their use is limited to systems that do not need to be heated or cooled rapidly. That is why they are used as thermal energy storage systems in both large scale in power plants and smaller scale in residential facilities. Although, if PCMs are meant to play an important role in electronics cooling, heat dissipation, or temperature stabilization in places where the access to cooling water is limited, such as electric automotive industry or hybrid aviation, a number of modifications and improvements needs to be introduced. Investigation whether additional materials of better thermal properties will affect the thermal properties of PCM is therefore of a big interest. An example of such material is diamond powder, which is a popular additive used in abradants. Its thermal diffusivity and conductivity is significantly higher than for a pure PCM. The article presents the results of an analysis of the effect of diamond powder on thermal conductivity and diffusivity of phase change materials in the case of octadecane.

Opis:
The purpose of this work was to examine the effect of diamond powder on the thermal properties of phase change materials on the example of octadecane. The experiment involved mixing of diamond powder with a specific granulation with the aforementioned representative of the alkanes group. Two different grain sizes were used: 50 and 250 micrometres. The change of specific heat, latent heat of phase change and degree of supercoiling in newly formed mixtures was compared to the pure forms of the phase-change materials used. Initial mixing with a glass-stirring rod showed strong stratification for each granulation due to the low viscosity of the mixture and too large differences between component densities. It was decided to add amorphous silicon dioxide to the mixtures, which increases density of the mixture. The optimal percentage of amorphous silicon dioxide was estimated experimentally. Measurements of thermal parameters were carried out using DSC technology. The results of the tests of specific heat and latent phase transition heat showed that with the increasing content of diamond, the specific heat of the mixture decreases almost twice, and the latent heat can decrease by up to three times. The effect of diamond powder on reducing the degree of supercoiling of the mixture was also observed. An important observation was that the mixture with higher granulation of diamond powder had greater tendency for sedimentation. This method could be used to increase thermal conductivity and diffusivity of phase change materials and make them viable for use in systems that require cooling at high rate or temperature stabilization, such as control systems in electronic vehicles or aviation industry and at the same time decrease the degree of supercoiling which could increase the efficiency of system.

The paper presents experimental results of PCM (Phase Change Material) enhanced cooling system. The investigations were focused on obtaining the best results of the cooling system during its start-up. The latent heat of phase change material was used to decrease temperature of the cooled electronic device. Comparison of a standard heat sink available on the market and the same heat sink filled with PCM applications was done. Temperature was monitored and registered during device start-up until its thermal steady state. It was done using contact and IR temperature measurement methods. PCMs usage enabled to absorb heat during electronic device start-up. The paper proves that using PCMs it is possible to delay temperature rise during electronic devices heating.

Phase change material as a thermal energy storage medium has been widely incorporated in various technologies like solar air/water heating, buildings, and desalination for efficient use and management of fluctuating solar energy. Temperature and thermal energy requirements dictate the selection of an appropriate phase change material for its application in various engineering systems. This paper reviews some of the thermo physical properties of the phase change materials and their applications for thermal storage. Thermal cycles up to 300 are performed to investigate melting and solidification reversibility as well as degradation over time. Paraffin waxes have reversible phase change with no degradation of thermo physical properties over time. Melting/solidification temperature and thermal energy storage capabilities make them suitable for their application as a thermal energy storage medium, in high temperature vapour compression, multi-stage flash and multi-effect distillation processes of non-membrane based indirect desalination systems.

Opis:
This paper presents an extended finite element method applied to solve phase change problems taking into account natural convection in the liquid phase. It is assumed that the transition from one state to another, e.g., during the solidification of pure metals, is discontinuous and that the physical properties of the phases vary across the interface. According to the classical Stefan condition, the location, topology and rate of the interface changes are determined by the jump in the heat flux. The incompressible Navier–Stokes equations with the Boussinesq approximation of the natural convection flow are solved for the liquid phase. The no-slip condition for velocity and the melting/freezing condition for temperature are imposed on the interface using penalty method. The fractional four-step method is employed for analysing conjugate heat transfer and unsteady viscous flow. The phase interface is tracked by the level set method defined on the same finite element mesh. A new combination of extended basis functions is proposed to approximate the discontinuity in the derivative of the temperature, velocity and the pressure fields. The single-mesh approach is demonstrated using three two-dimensional benchmark problems. The results are compared with the numerical and experimental data obtained by other authors.

Rapid development in the high-power laser technology poses new requirements on the thermal protective materials. Several concepts of the new thermal barrier materials have been proposed. The proposals include multilayer structures, porous materials, systems with phase change materials (PCMs), and systems with various thermal contact resistance for different contact pairs. Comparative study based on numerical simulation results has been performed to assess efficiency of each proposal. Three major candidate technologies were considered: the CO2 laser, the HF/DF chemical laser, and the Nd-glass solid-state laser. The CO2 combustion driven gas laser was built in mid-seventies. Its power was 500 kW with the poor beam quality. In the context of thermal protection against laser, high conductive material component in a complex structure might be especially useful, since irradiated surface is usually limited to a small size.

The paper presents the study results of the stability and heat storage capacity of paraffin-in-water phase change suspensions (PCSs) obtained by the homogenization of paraffin and water in the developed rotary hydrodynamic homogenizer. The optimal concentration of components for obtaining stable paraffin-in-water suspensions is found. It is shown that the stable PCSs in the form of pastes, gels, and liquids can be obtained depending on the concentration of water, paraffin, and the surface active agent (SAA) as well as its type. In addition, the scheme of the solar heating system with the heat storage tank where the PCS functions both as the heat transfer fluid and the heat storage media is presented. It is shown that the use of PCS in the domestic solar heating system allowed the heat storage capacity of the storage tank to be increased by 25% as a result of the high fusion heat of paraffin and the high value of the water specific heat capacity. The estimation of the saving rate from applying fluid PCS as a heat storage medium is also presented and discussed.
