    The point of departure of the article is an analysis of medical discourse of the end of 19th century, which was concentrated on the symptoms of neurasthenia – a disease of men who were considered victims of civilisation, in contrast to women’s hysteria, regarded as their bodily affliction. The author notes a special status of this discourse which transcends the borders of medicine and diagnoses the whole social field: it becomes entangled in the relationships between sexes and genders, in class, ethnical and national stratification; expresses the traits of capitalism, democracy and its requirements, thus becoming a means of conveying contemporary ideas and phantasms concerning sexuality and its relation with subjectivity. The phantasmic projections of “endangered” masculinity, lined with panic and fear, constitute the main objects of reconstruction and interpretation.

    The text is about Alfred Hitchcock’s informal trilogy with Grace Kelly: Dial M for Murder, Rear Window and To Catch a Thief. It binds together: a crime motif, a male protagonist type posing an exciting challenge for a woman, and an impeccable blonde character (Margot, Lisa, Frances) reflecting the Hitchcock fantasy of the ‘covered with glaciers’. In each of these films, Hitchcock exposes the illusory nature of the spectacle with the model situation of the internal viewer (of stage, theater and film nature, based on the alternation of open/closed space). By introducing the character of an active, creative and empowered heroine, he reinterprets the model of ‘pure blonde’ in Hollywood cinema, the object of desire and the subject of the look – focused on her, reflecting her point of view, determined by the vector of her gaze – indicates her autonomy and subjectivity, dependent only from the image keeper, Hitchcock himself.

    Although the significance of phantasms in Anne Shirley’s life cannot be questioned, the shapes and forms that they take are discussed very rarely. Trying to gather and classify the effects of the protagonist’s imagination, we can look at them in reference to the time problem. Those phantasies vastly concern the future, but – at the same time – they are deeply rooted in Anne’s past. Her state, initially hard and prompting her to escape into the imaginary world, is gradually appearing clearer. However, the girl does not give up the prospects of what will (or what she would like to) happen. In her statements one can see the prediction of the significant social changes related to emancipation, education or religion, which at that time were yet to come. Montgomery’s book, popular ceaselessly for more than one hundred years, shows that “all is still ahead of us”, even people who are unsung, excluded, marginalized... But will those dreams really be fulfilled?
    Mimo że o znaczeniu fantazmatów w życiu Anne Shirley nie trzeba chyba nikogo przekonywać, rzadko mówi się o tym, jakie dokładnie przybierały one postaci. Podejmując próbę zebrania oraz klasyfikacji efektów pracy bujnej wyobraźni bohaterki powieści Montgomery, można zastanowić się również nad ich odniesieniem do czasu. Bowiem, choć owe fantazje w dużej mierze dotyczą przyszłości, w interesujący sposób splatają się także z przeszłością dziewczynki. Jej sytuacja, początkowo trudna, skłaniająca do ucieczki w świat wyobraźni, stopniowo zaczyna rysować się w coraz jaśniejszych barwach. Jednak Anne nadal tworzy wizje dotyczące tego, co będzie/co chciałaby, żeby było, a kiedy je werbalizuje, okazuje się, że w jej wypowiedziach słychać zapowiedź mających wkrótce nastąpić przemian społecznych dotyczących m.in. emancypacji kobiet, edukacji, religii... Ta nieustannie popularna powieść już od ponad stu lat zdaje się więc pokazywać, że „wszystko przed nami” – nawet tymi na różne sposoby wykluczanymi, pomijanymi, marginalizowanymi. Jednak czy te marzenia rzeczywiście się spełnią?
