By approaching Ślub (The Marriage) as an epistemological dilemma of a human being who has been caught in a trap of the stage, the author proposes to reread and interpret a new W. Gombrowicz’s drama from a performative perspective. While relating to the title of Tadeusz Kantor’s cricotage Ślub w manierze konstruktywistycznej i surrealistycznej (A Wedding in the Constructivist and Surrealistic Style), the author aims to demonstrate the multi-faceted performative impact of Gombrowicz’s drama within the context of the dissolution of the principles and referential forms of metatheater.

This article presents performance studies as a proposal that would follow the era of disciplinarity. The author proposes to view the phenomenon from the perspective of the changes and transformations from the aesthetics of reception to performance studies, and introduces the category of the literary interlocking to define the performative functioning of text. The author then proceeds to interpret the relationships between the “dramatic turn” that has reoriented and restructured modern thought on reality and art, and the notions of anti-binarity and performativeness. Finally, the author makes an argument that the performative turn has profoundly and significantly transformed the humanities in its entirety. The performative breakthrough has ideological nature that is related to the foundations of understanding the substance of dramaticality.

Tablecloth. On the definitions of performance From its very beginning the development of performatics was influenced by two kinds of performance activities: performance art and theatre. In Po- land theatrologists became proponents of performatics. The translation of Schechner’s book about performance studies was used to homogenise Polish performative vocabulary: the translator reached for the polonized word “performans” and created a new term: “performatyka”. Thanks to Schechner’s general definition – performances are actions, while the sub- ject of performatics are behaviours – the concept of “performans” proved to be very useful because the Polish language lacks such “transparent tool of description”. When in the U.S.A. the researchers dealing with per- formance studies radically broadened the area of performative activities, their representative in Poland, Jacek Wachowski, became involved in the process of limiting the notion of “performans” and theatre’s influence on performatics. This article is devoted to his innovative proposal.

The author of Performatyka – teoria katastrof? [“Performance studies – the theory of catastrophes?”], which is a cross-sectional investigation into performance studies, tracks the trains of thought about catastrophes in different theories of performativity, ranging from J. L. Austin’s to Jon McKenzie’s ideas. Of particular interest is how particular theoreticians integrate the term ‘catastrophe’ into their conceptual frameworks and how they evaluate it. By criticizing the approach taken by Judith Butler, who postulates “melancholic performance studies”, which brings to mind Adorno’s idea that is explicated in Minima Moralia (traurige Wissenschaft), the author tries to show how we can productively use Austin’s theses that are presented in the first chapters of his famous How to Do Things with Words. In the author’s opinion, Austin allows us to approach communicational catastrophes from a different perspective, which is often forgotten, i.e. of the functioning of contextual systems. It is shown that the tension between felicity and infelicity may be at the core of the popularity of performativity which is understood as a tool for researching contemporary cultural phenomena.

The theatralization of the emotion workThe article describes the practices of using the typical methods of theatrical expression by contemporary business institutions to develop the workers’ emotional labor skills. Special emphasis is put on discussing the communication and training-related issues which are vital for the development of specifi c emotion usage patterns. The discussion is placed in the context of observations on the process of introducing the concept of performatics into business and tracing the analogies between social relations and situations known from performance art. The article is intended to initiate a discussion about the effects of interweaving culture with business.

This article attempts to analyze Tadeusz Różewicz’s works by using methods that are associated with performative literary studies. The author refers to concepts of quantum physics and introduces a new aesthetic category, “entangled arts”. Among these arts are, for example, drama and theater, which are seen from an anti-binary perspective. This approach eliminates the traditional division of arts into the art of literature and performing arts, thus leading us to look on literature as a performing art. Therefore, the idea of “entangled arts” is not about “the synthesis of arts”, but about their unresolvedness and an act of reading which requires one to simultaneously exist and be active in two different realities, for example, in a digital and imagined world, or in film and on stage. Różewicz adheres to the same principle as Diego Velázquez when he was painting Las Meninas, which represents a trap of a performative painting. This is true of Kartoteka rozrzucona [The Scattered Card Index], Pułapka [The Trap] and the short story Grzech [The Sin]. The author of this article considers Tadeusz Różewicz to be the greatest modern writer, a dramatic poet who pushes the boundaries of art, and an artist who is both present and absent.

Artykuł stanowi recenzję niedawno wydanego tomu The Routledge Companion to Theatre and Performance Historiography (2021). Przedstawiając zwięzłą historię powstania publikacji, jej układ i mozaikową koncepcję, główną problematykę i metodę, autorka przybliża niektóre teksty (szczególnie interesujące dla polskiego czytelnika). Tom, jak każde monumentalne przedsięwzięcie, budzi też zastrzeżenia; te dotyczą głównie realizacji postulatu polifonicznego i odnowicielskiego podejścia do historii widowisk oraz ograniczeń krytyki instytucjonalnej (jej optyka miewa również „ślepy punkt”).
This article offers a review of the recently published edited volume The Routledge Companion to Theatre and Performance Historiography (2021). The reviewer briefly presents the origins of this publication, its structure and mosaic-like design, as well as its main topics and methodology, and then she discusses selected contributions (of particular interest to the Polish reader) in more detail. Like any large-scale undertaking of this kind, this volume also raises concerns and doubts, especially with regard to following the postulated polyphonic and refreshing approach to performance history, as well as the limitations of institutional critique, whose outlook has its "blind spot," too.
