Universities play central roles in the creation of knowledge economy and the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0). They build critical human capital, generate new knowledge and strive to promote innovation through academic entrepreneurship. Despite the potential benefits of academic entrepreneurship (AE), the argument that AE fuels or impedes faculties’ commitment to traditional activities in both developed and developing countries is still open. Therefore, this paper empirically examines the influence of academic entrepreneurship on teaching and publishing potential of faculties with a view to suggesting appropriate policy guide for promoting innovations and enhancing traditional activities among the academia in Nigeria. Data for this paper were collected from 229 faculty members within science and technology-related fields in 13 selected universities across Nigeria, through a cross-sectional survey design approach. Data collected were analysed using factor and regression analyses. The results showed that participation of faculty members in start-up formation and industry collaboration (SUFIC) (β =2.8, p˂0.05) and faculty externship (FE) (β =2.3, p˂0.1) have statistically significant and positive effects on the potential for publishing among the faculty members. Faculty externship (FE) also shows a positive and significant relationship to the teaching performance of faculty members. However, university-related entrepreneurial engagements (UREE) show a negative and significant relationship to both publication and teaching performance, suggesting caution when selections are made regarding such activities by the university administrators. The study concludes with managerial implications for the university managers and policymakers.
Uniwersytety odgrywają kluczową rolę w tworzeniu gospodarki opartej na wiedzy i czwartej rewolucji przemysłowej (Przemysł 4.0). Budują krytyczny kapitał ludzki, generują nową wiedzę i dążą do promowania innowacji poprzez przedsiębiorczość akademicką. Pomimo potencjalnych korzyści płynących z przedsiębiorczości akademickiej (AE), argument, że AE napędza lub utrudnia zaangażowanie wydziałów w tradycyjne działania zarówno w krajach rozwiniętych, jak i rozwijających się, pozostaje otwarty. Dlatego niniejszy artykuł empirycznie bada wpływ przedsiębiorczości akademickiej na potencjał dydaktyczny i publikacyjny wydziałów w celu zaproponowania odpowiedniego przewodnika politycznego dotyczącego promowania innowacji i wzmacniania tradycyjnych działań wśród środowisk akademickich w Nigerii. Dane do tego artykułu zostały zebrane od 229 wykładowców z dziedzin związanych z nauką i technologią na 13 wybranych uniwersytetach w Nigerii, poprzez podejście do projektowania badań przekrojowych. Zebrane dane analizowano za pomocą analiz czynnikowych i regresji. Wyniki pokazały, że udział pracowników wydziału w tworzeniu nowych przedsiębiorstw i współpracy branżowej (SUFIC) (β = 2,8, p˂0,05) oraz wydziałowych praktykach (FE) (β = 2,3, p˂0,1) ma statystycznie istotny i pozytywny wpływ na potencjał publikacyjny wśród pracowników wydziału. Staż wydziałowy (FE) również wykazuje pozytywny i znaczący związek z wynikami dydaktycznymi członków wydziału. Jednak związane z uniwersytetami zaangażowanie w przedsiębiorczość (UREE) wykazuje negatywny i znaczący związek zarówno z publikacjami, jak i wynikami nauczania, co sugeruje ostrożność przy dokonywaniu wyborów dotyczących takich działań przez administratorów uczelni. Badanie kończy się implikacjami menedżerskimi dla kierowników uniwersytetów i decydentów.

The study aims to develop and validate a Teacher Grit Scale and determine its predictive validity for performance. This quantitative research utilized exploratory, confirmatory, and regression analyses based on data from 1425 teachers of the Department of Education, Philippines. Exploratory factor analysis established the factorial validity of a 2-factor structure as compared to 3-factor and 4-factor models. Confirmatory factor analyses from Region IX and Region X of the Department of Education reveal strong cross-validation between the 2-factor models and the data using goodness-of-fit indices. These outcomes show that the factors describing grit are: (1) Perseverance in Teaching and (2) Passion and Purpose in Teaching. Grit relates significantly to teacher performance. However, only the first dimension of grit - perseverance in teaching, established predictive validity with performance.

As in every industry at risk, the human and organizational factors constitute the main stakes for maritime safety. Furthermore, several events at sea have been used to develop appropriate risk models. The investigation on maritime accidents is, nowadays, a very important tool to identify the problems related to human factor and can support accident prevention and the improvement of maritime safety. Part of this investigation should in future also be near misses. Operation of ships is full of regulations, instructions and guidelines also addressing human factors and safety culture to enhance safety. However, even though the roots of a safety culture have been established, there are still serious barriers to the breakthrough of the safety management. One of the most common deficiencies in the case of maritime transport is the respective monitoring and documentation usually lacking of adequacy and excellence. Nonetheless, the maritime area can be exemplified from other industries where activities are ongoing to foster and enhance safety culture.

Opis:
This article presents the results of a survey using a questionnaire conducted in Algeria, to evaluate the quality of public drinking water service, and at the same time the level of dissatisfaction / satisfaction of the subscribers. A statistical analysis of the data has been conducted on a representative sample of general population to identify weaknesses and strengths related to the current state of water management. The assessment of the quality of service, and the quality of water, as well as the price of water under the influence of the geographical distribution of the population was also studied. The results of the statistical analyses show a wide variability regarding the level of dissatisfaction/satisfaction of the subscribers. In order to simplify the interpretation, we gathered the results in the form of classes and groups in such way that the cities appear on GIS mapping software, with their inhabitants’ degree of satisfaction.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki ankiety przeprowadzonej w Algierii metodą kwestionariuszy celem oceny jakości usług publicznego zaopatrzenia w wodę, a tym samym satysfakcji/niezadowolenia ankietowanych. Statystyczną analizę danych przeprowadzono na reprezentatywnej próbie generalnej populacji, aby określić mocne i słabe strony bieżącego stanu gospodarki wodnej. Przeprowadzono także ocenę jakości usług, jakości wody i ceny wody w odniesieniu do geograficznego rozmieszczenia ludności. Wyniki analiz statystycznych wskazują na duże zróżnicowanie poziomu satysfakcji/niezadowolenia ankietowanych. Aby uprościć interpretację, zebrano wyniki w postaci grup i klas w taki sposób, że miasta pojawiają się w graficznym programie GIS wraz z poziomem satysfakcji ich mieszkańców.

Hybrid nanofluids is obtained by dispersing more than one nanoparticle into a base fluid. The work is concerned with a detailed numerical investigation of the thermal efficiency and hydraulic performance of hybrid nanofluids for circular jet impinges on a round plate. For this paper, a metal (Ag), a metal oxides (Al2O3) and a metal carbides (SiC) nanoparticle and their water based hybrid nanofluids are considered to analyse numerically with varying significant dimensionless parameters, i.e., the jet-to-plate spacing ratio, Reynolds number and volume fraction of nanoparticles. The results demonstrated that the efficiency of heat transfer of all nanofluids is increased by the addition of nanoparticle to the dispersed in water at constant Reynolds number. Moreover, the results illustrate that heat transfer efficacy and pumping power penalty both increased as jet-to-plate spacing ratio reduced. The jet-to-plate spacing ratio equal to 4 is the best as the percentage enhance heat transfer is maximum in this situation. Since both the heat transfer effect and pumping penalty increase using hybrid nanofluids, thermal performance factor increases or decreases depends on nanoparticles of nanofluids. It is evident that the analysis of these hybrid nanofluids will consider both the increase in heat efficiency and the pumping capacity. The best flow behaviour is achieved for SiC–Al2O3 hybrid nanofluids. New merit number is introduced for additional clarification.

Performance appraisal in human resource management is a function that evaluates employees’ knowledge, skills, and abilities in executing their job. To assess this appraisal, the employees’ key performance index (KPI) can be used. Recently, office politics has been indicated as an activity that may ruin employee-employer relationships and turn the office ecosystem unharmonious. The influence of organizational politics must be avoided during the performance appraisal process. This work depicted practical knowledge and theoretical gaps of the previous studies. Among them are leniency, straightness and stereotype behavior errors. This research was conducted to assess dimensions of organizational politics as one more error in the employee’s performance appraisal. The presented study considered a questionnaire directed to 274 officers and clerical staffs who were selected randomly through proportionate stratified sampling method in one of the Malaysian government financial sectors located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In total 271 questionnaires were returned and used in this study. This work employed Questionnaire of Political Considerations in Performance Appraisal by using robust statistical techniques for testing and validating the results. This study has successfully extracted three reliable dimensions of politics in performance appraisal, namely acquiring benefit, human relations, and control. In addition, this work developed a new conceptual model together with a dynamic and practical recommendation for top management in this field used to avoid the extant error factors.

Research background: The paper addresses the issue of an optimal tax system and puts emphasis on two aspects: justice and efficiency. The issue of taxation has been the subject of numerous debates at the European level for several years. A good tax system should contribute to the state treasury with sufficient revenues, should not be an administrative burden, and must be sufficiently efficient and transparent. Purpose of the article: The submitted article provides an extensive analysis of the opinions of respondents on the effectiveness of the financial administration of the Slovak Republic. The aim is to analyse the views and attitudes of the respondents on the key factors affecting the effectiveness of financial administration in terms of respondents' age, gender, occupation and place of residence using mathematical-statistical methods. Methods: In the course of extensive empirical quantitative research (N = 1.500) were used Factor Model Analysis (Factor Analysis) and Analysis of Variance (Anova) were used. The data was obtained through a questionnaire survey, which-was carried out in four districts of Slovakia and focused on a wide range of respondents divided into four age-related categories. Findings & Value added: In terms of research carried out, it is possible to conclude that there is dissatisfaction with the overall tax and customs system in the Slovak Republic. An analysis of respondents' views on the effectiveness of the tax system has shown that it is possible to identify several key factors that affect it, and they are: collection of levies and availability, competence of tax administration staff, computerisation of tax administration, tax collection efficiency, labour costs, and administrative difficulty of tax administration. in the paper, we also discuss these in more detail. The research results offer relevant and interesting implications for public authorities, policy makers and reformers as well as motives for further investigation of the tax administration issue.

Solar air heater is regarded as the most common and popular solar thermal system and has a wide range of applications, from residential to industrial. Solar air heater is not viable because of the low convective heat transfer coefficient at the absorber plate which contributes to decreasing the thermal efficiency. Artificial coarseness on the plain surface is the most effective method to enhance heat transfer with a moderate rate of friction factor of flowing air in the design of solar air heater duct. The different parameters and different artificial coarseness are responsible to alter the flow structure and heat transfer rate. Over the years different artificial roughness and how its geometry affects the performance of solar air heater have been thoroughly studied. Various investigators report the correlations between heat transfer and friction factors. In the present study, a comparison of several artificial coarseness geometries and methods with a view to enhancing the performance of solar air heater has been made. A brief outline has also been presented for future research.

The article presents the prospects for application of wireless power supply in electronic devices. A short description of advantages of using this technology including the principle of its operation and construction of typical systems applied in devices of everyday use was provided. Two types of resonance systems used for wireless transmission of energy were presented. Also, advantages and disadvantages of using each of these systems were listed. Furthermore, the impedance and performance analyses of the wireless electric energy transmission systems were discussed. The performance characteristics were presented depending on several parameters in the three–dimensional form. The minimum quality factor of the resonance system, which allows the achievement of the high system performance at low interface between the primary and secondary coil winding was demonstrated. Two tested circuits were compared and the areas of application were determined for each of them. Difficulties related to maintenance of the circuit in resonance and to limitation of losses were determined.

This study demonstrates utilization of Sense and Respond method for developing operations within housing markets by Critical Factor Index (CFI) having influence even on the strategic business performance. CFIs of knowledge intensive businesses can be measured and dynamically developed by Sense & Respond philosophy [1]. The purpose is to evaluate operative business performance in two quite different cases within quite big real estate businesses in Finland. For example, relationships with the customers, processes and possibilities for growth internally by different groups of respondents, 'hosting', 'management' and 'rent', were compared between the cases. One case company has a lot of more social housing compared to another. The work aims at finding out and understanding similarities and differences in business processes by Balanced Score Card (BSC) and by much more operations oriented OP questionnaires, and by deeper interviews in the case companies as well. BSC questionnaire has been supported by an important part of trust related factors as well. We could find similarities like: openness, customer, communication between different departments and hierarchy levels, utilizing different types of organizing systems; adaptation to knowledge and technology, utilizing different types of organizing systems. A new method for dynamic resource allocations in the operative processes in housing, especially in renting, where the customers move from one apartment to another one, has been proposed, it was validated and verified by weak and semi strong market tests in two quite big but different case companies. The preliminary but promising findings can be applicable for the whole market.

Analyzing the systems in terms of reliability, we often treat them as the technical objects only, omitting human interaction or assuming that operator has constant characteristics. This significantly distorts the results obtained in this way, since human is a part of the system with special properties that can change together with the predisposition of the operator and the conditions under which he operates. These attributes may have a major influence on the reliability of the systems. Therefore, analysis of systems reliability should include a reliability of operator and its properties. In this paper presented the antropotechnical reliability structure based on selected installation, which is a part of ships propulsion system. Also operator’s functions were defined and the analysis of human reliability, taking into account various properties of the operator and the external conditions, were performed. Then, there is assessed the influence of operator and environmental factors on the value of the entire system reliability. The study used the reliability data of the container ship propulsion system equipped with low-speed piston engine, fixed pitch propeller and auxiliary installations. These data were obtained from studies of expert judgments (Brandowski A., Frąckowiak W. et al.) in the years 2007–2009. For HRA (human reliability analysis), HEART technique (Human Error Assessment and Reduction Technique) was used, together with the human unreliability values and correction factors developed by the authors of this method. Study results illustrate influence of environmental, ergonomic factors and the properties of the operator on the reliability of the antropotechnical systems. The studies were subjected exemplification on fuel treatment installation as a part of ships propulsion systems.

A comprehensive evaluation of work-related perfomance factors is a prerequisite to developing integrated and long-term solutions to workplace performance improvement. This paper describes a work-factor classification system that categorizes the entire domain of workplace factors impacting performance. A questionnaire-based instrument was developed to implement this classification system in industry. Fifty jobs were evaluated in 4 different service and manufacturing companies using the proposed questionnaire-based instrument. The reliability coefficients obtained from the analyzed jobs were considered good (.589 to .862). In general, the physical work factors resulted in higher reliability coefficients (.847 to .862) than non-physical work factors (.589 to .768).

Opis:
In this article the author uses two models, a lagged-effects model and a serial correlation model, which identify potential liquidity risk in hedge fund portfolios. From the serial correlation model a liquidity risk factor was developed and added to a multi-factor equilibrium model in order to re-estimate Alpha across a universe of hedge funds. It was found that much of what passes for fund Alpha in a multi-factor risk model lacking a liquidity risk factor is actually a compensation for bearing liquidity risk in the context of a model that includes the innovative liquidity risk factor. This result has implications for both a pre-investment due diligence and a manager selection as well as the postinvestment fund performance evaluation and risk management.
W artykule wykorzystano dwa modele – opóźnionych efektów i autokorelacji – do identyfikacji potencjalnego ryzyka płynności w portfelach funduszy hedgingowych. Na podstawie modelu autokorelacji opracowano czynnik ryzyka płynności, który dodano do wieloczynnikowego modelu równowagi w celu ponownego oszacowania współczynnika alfa jako miary wyników inwestycyjnych dużego spektrum funduszy hedgingowych. Otrzymane wyniki wskazują, że duża część wypracowanej alfy z modelu wieloczynnikowego pozbawionego czynnika ryzyka płynności jest w rzeczywistości rekompensatą za to ryzyko. Wynik ten jest istotny zarówno dla przedinwestycyjnego badania due diligence dotyczącego wyboru menedżerów funduszy hedgingowych, jak i poinwestycyjnej oceny wyników tych funduszy oraz zarządzania ryzykiem.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of bench-tests and calculations assessing the influence of temperature on the performance of a two-pipe hydraulic shock absorber. The shock absorber prepared for the tests was cooled with dry ice to a temperature corresponding to that associated with the average winter conditions in a temperate climate. The temperature range of the shock absorber during testing was ensured via equipping it with a thermocouple and monitoring it with a thermal imaging camera. During testing, the shock absorber was subjected to kinematic forces of a selected frequency with two different, fixed displacement amplitudes. The results of the tests showed a direct correlation between the decrease of component resistance at lower temperatures. The rate of change in resistance was higher at lower temperatures. It was also found that the energy dissipated in one shock cycle decreased linearly with an increasing temperature. Finally, a method for determining the ideal use temperature of the shock absorber for the assumed operating conditions was also presented.
