The text is an attempt to present the phenomenon of experiencing otherness by adult people with mental disability. The author presents survey results which are a part of a bigger project researching the microworlds of adults with intellectual disability. In the research, both as the strategy of collecting the research materials and the method of their analysis, the methodology of constructing grounded theory by Kathy Charmaz was used. 14 adults with intellectual disability, attendees of the Community Centre of Self-Help, were researched, as well as 14 attendants (including parents and the centre’s employees). The results showed otherness as a specific phenomenon experienced by all the surveyed people with intellectual disability.

The article addresses the question of adapting public spaces, including parks and gardens, to the needs of people with disabilities for the purpose of outdoor recreation. According to the principles of universal design, public spaces should enable social inclusion, which implies respect for current needs of diverse populations. The study described in the article focuses on the needs of people with vision impairment regarding outdoor recreation and adjustments that need to be made in the infrastructure of parks and gardens. The aim of the study was to answer three key questions: (1) How can outdoor experiences be made accessible to people with visual impairments? (2) How can outdoor experiences be encouraged, rethought and redesigned for people with visual impairments? (3) What barriers stop people with visual disabilities from participating in outdoor leisure in sensory gardens? These questions are answered using insights from desk research, data from an inventory of selected sensory gardens and interviews with blind and partially sighted respondents. The study, conducted between June and August 201, covered 15 gardens located in various parts in Poland: in cities, rural areas and areas of natural value. The interviews, involving 32 respondents, were held directly in the gardens in cooperation with the Polish Association for the Blind. The results were used to formulate recommendations for good practice in the field of universal garden design, which can provide sensory experiences for everyone, including people with visual impairments. The observed development of sensory gardens seems to reflects a great interest in this type of outdoor sites, which are conducive to recreation, education, integration, and social inclusion. Solutions applied in sensory gardens should provide inspiration for creating universal gardens, accessible to everyone.

The paper addresses the problem of the welfare of the person who is the recipient of a psychologist’s professional activities as the paramount principle in the ethical evaluation of such activities. Emphasis is placed on two important issues connected with this problem: the accuracy of the concept of recipient of the activities undertaken by a psychologist and the comparison of the value of welfare and well-being categories in the ethical analysis of psychological activities. Emphasis in the paper is placed on the value of the concept of recipient of a psychologist’s activities, which becomes particularly evident with reference to the situation of work for the benefit of individuals with various kinds of disabilities and for the benefit of their families. The article also elaborates the thesis of the greater value of the category of welfare in ethical analysis of the psychologist’s professional activities.

The author emphasizes the influence of social attitudes towards an individual on his or her self-perception and also pays attention to what threatens the development of identity in people with intellectual disability. It is said that the most important thing in the process of identity formation is the fulfillment of three basic psychological needs during adulthood: the need for having positive relations with other people, the need for autonomy and the need for competence. The limited opportunities of adult women and men with intellectual disability to realize these needs are connected to attitudes towards people with intellectual disability such as over-protectiveness, compassion, focus on deficits, ignorance, segregation, control and judgments. These attitudes are generated by a set of social stereotypes, according to which a person with intellectual disability is an “ageless child”. People with intellectual disabilities are affected by a lack of autonomy, the impossibility of experiencing their own competence as well as limited social contacts as they stay under control of their closest social environment. These problems are concerned with the areas of sexuality and independent living. The author provides examples of discriminatory attitudes as well as current stereotypes and social beliefs which are an actual barrier to the psychosocial functioning of adult people with intellectual disability with respect to the realization of their sexual needs and needs for autonomy.

The aim of this article is an analysis of attitudes of young people towards people with physical disabilities. Social attitudes towards people with disabilities and the various determinants of these attitudes were the subject of the study. These factors are grouped into: socio-demographic, cultural and personal. The results of research conducted among 249 secondary school students and high school students have shown that a positive attitude towards young people with physical disabilities has a declarative nature. High school students in comparison with secondary school students have a more negative attitude to people with physical disabilities, especially in the cognitive and emotional dimension.
Celem artykułu jest analiza postaw młodzieży wobec osób z niepełnosprawnością ruchową. Dokonano charakterystyki postaw wobec osób niepełnosprawnych, a także różnych czynników warunkujących te postawy. Czynniki pogrupowano na: społeczno-demograficzne, kulturowe oraz osobowościowe. W badaniach własnych przyjęto trójczynnikową teorię postawy, wykorzystano kwestionariusz postaw wobec osób z niepełnosprawnością ruchową w opracowaniu własnym. Wyniki badań 249 uczniów szkół gimnazjalnych i licealnych pokazały, że pozytywna postawa młodzieży wobec niepełnosprawnych ruchowo ma charakter deklaratywny. Młodzież licealna w porównaniu z gimnazjalistami wykazuje bardziej negatywną postawę w stosunku do osób niepełnosprawnych ruchowo, zwłaszcza w wymiarze poznawczym i emocjonalnym.

Parenting is sometimes seen as a gift or as a duty. In any case, it is the responsibility of the parent (adult) for a child, who should be given the opportunity for the fullest development and gaining happiness in his/her life. At the same time, parenthood gives man the opportunity to complete his/her happy fate. Can anyone be well prepared for parenthood and fulfill it well? Today, it is quite often posed the question of the right of disabled people to parenthood. Societies declaring the inalienable and equal rights of people with different types of disability in the face of having children by disabled people (especially with intellectual disabilities) are no longer so clearly unanimous. The abovementioned dilemmas are taken into consideration and presented in this article. The author presents stories of disabled parents – their dilemmas and problems faced every day. She draws attention to the “shadows” but also the “pros” of parenthood of disabled people.
Rodzicielstwo postrzegane bywa jako dar lub jako obowiązek. W każdym przypadku jest odpowiedzialnością rodzica (dorosłego człowieka) za dziecko, któremu należy stworzyć warunki jak najpełniejszego rozwoju i osiągania szczęścia we własnym życiu. Jednocześnie rodzicielstwo daje człowiekowi możliwość dopełnienia własnego szczęśliwego losu. Czy każdy jednak może się do rodzicielstwa dobrze przygotować i dobrze je wypełnić? Obecnie dość często stawia się pytanie o prawo osób niepełnosprawnych do rodzicielstwa. Społeczeństwa, deklarując niezbywalność i równość praw osób z różnego rodzaju niepełnosprawnością, w obliczu zagadnienia posiadania dzieci przez osoby niepełnosprawne (zwłaszcza z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną) nie są już tak jednoznacznie zgodne. Tym właśnie dylematom poświęcone są rozważania zawarte w niniejszym artykule. Autorka ukazuje historie niepełnosprawnych rodziców, ich dylematy oraz problemy, z jakimi borykają się na co dzień. Zwraca uwagę na „cienie”, ale i „blaski” rodzicielstwa osób niepełnosprawnych.

In the years 2010-2012, the research survey was carried out on 480 people with or without physical disabilities. The aim of the research was to obtain information on attitudes and opinions of people with physical disabilities towards the possibility of reducing social marginalization through participation in physical culture. The research confirmed that the respondents’ attitudes towards participation of those people in physical culture were, in majority, positive. Participants of the research expressed the opinion that the feeling of marginalization of physically disabled persons would not have been so strong if there had been the possibility of an active participation in sport, recreation and tourism as well as in active rehabilitation. The possibilities of an active participation in physical activity should be inexpensive and widely accessible regardless of the year season and with providing volunteer assistance and transport facilitations.

Do niedawna uważano, że niepełnosprawność intelektualna nie doty- czy dorosłych i ogranicza się jedynie do dzieci i młodzieży. W publikacjach naukowych ubiegłego wieku czytamy, że osoby te nie żyją dłużej niż 40 lat, a i to raczej wyjątkowo. Rzeczywistość zmieniła się między innymi wraz z postępem medycyny i wzrostem jakości opieki medycznej. Wydłużenie życia ludzkiego jest tendencją ogólną i ma swoje odzwierciedlenie również wśród osób z długotrwałą niepełnosprawnością. W efekcie populacja starych osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną pojawiła się w historii po raz pierwszy. Celem artykułu jest wstępne rozpoznanie i przybliżenie problematyki starości i starzenia się osób z niepełnosprawnością in- telektualną, stanowiąc punkt wyjścia dla dalszych badań autorki w tym zakresie. W tekście przybliżono pojęcie niepełnosprawność intelektualna i geragogika specjalna, omówiono zmiany inwolucyjne towarzyszące procesowi starzenia się osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną i modele starości w tej subpopulacji.
Until recently, it has been considered that intellectual disability does not concern adults and is only limited to children and youth. In scientific publications of the previous century one can read that these people do not exceed the age of 40, and even reaching that age is an exception. The reality has changed with the progress of medicine and the improvement of medical care quality. Higher life expectancy is a general tendency also among people with long-lasting disability. As a result, for the first time in history, we are dealing with a population of old people with intellectual disability. The objective of this article is the initial research into and introducing the problem of old age and ageing of intellectually disabled people, as a starting point for the author’s further research in this scope. In the text, the notions of intellectual disability and special geragogy are presented, involutional changes connected with the process of ageing of intellectually disabled people are discussed as well as ageing models of this subpopulation.

Koncepcja mieszkań wspomaganych została wielokrotnie opisana, jednak mimo to istnieje niewiele badań naukowych poświęconych zakresowi udzielanego wsparcia przez mieszkalnictwo wspomagane dla osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną. W związku z tym, przeprowadzając badania szukałam odpowiedzi na pytanie: jakie jest wsparcie osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną na przykładzie mieszkalnictwa wspomaganego? Badania zostały przeprowadzone w jednym z mieszkań wspomaganych dla osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną w Sosnowcu. Potrzebne materiały zebrałam metodą obserwacji bezpośredniej uczestniczącej i wywiadu bezpośredniego częściowo ustrukturyzowanego. Zaprezentowane badania ukazują zakres wsparcia udzielanego przez mieszkalnictwo wspomagane. Organizacja dnia, przygotowywanie posiłków, rozwiązywanie konfliktów to niezbędne umiejętności, które należy rozwijać już od najmłodszych lat życia.
The concept of supported housing has been described many times, but despite this, there is little research on the extent of support provided by supported housing for people with intellectual disabilities. Therefore, in conducting this research, I sought to answer the question: what is the support provided by assisted housing for people with intellectual disabilities? The research was conducted in one of the Supported Apartments for people with intellectual disabilities in Sosnowiec, Poland. I collected the necessary materials by using the method of direct participant observation and semi-structured direct interview. The research presented here shows the range of support provided by supported housing. Organizing the day, preparing meals, and resolving conflicts are essential skills that should be developed from an early age.

Opis:
Difficulties resulting from the social perception of people with disabilities, and the personal assessment of their own disability are important for her/his relationship with other people. Therefore, it is worth asking what the perceptions are, of those who experience psychosocial effects due to their physical disability, towards people with intellectual disabilities, hearing impairments, visual impairments, mental illnesses, as well as their own physically disabled group. To analyse the perception of people with a physical disability, the study explores three areas: the acceptance or rejection of society’s stigmatization towards persons with disabilities; integrative versus separative social orientations of people with physical disability; social preferences of people with physical disability regarding other disabled people. The research sample consisted of 75 people with physical disabilities, who suffer from damage to the locomotor system. The data was collected using a questionnaire The findings highlight that the response from those who were physically disabled agreed with the opinions of general society, not only with the issue of promoting integrated solutions and offering assistance, but also having the same preferences and opinions about specific types of disability. However, their perception regarding their own group was noticeably different from that of general society.

The present article undertakes an attempt to present the contemporary concept of intellectual disability in the context of the social model of disability. Attention was focused on the definition of intellectual disability, its assumptions and the basic dimensions of the functioning of people with intellectual disability. In addition, it was attempted to assess their compatibility with the postulates included in the social model of disability. As a result of the analysis, it was established that placing a stronger emphasis in the concept of intellectual disability on the interrelations between how it is perceived and who a person with intellectual disability becomes would promote stressing the role of the social environment in their development, in addition to encouraging the support and strengthening the tendency to perceive intellectual disability in the socio-educational dimension.
W artykule podjęto próbę prezentacji współczesnej koncepcji niepełnosprawności intelektualnej w kontekście społecznego modelu niepełnosprawności. Zwrócono uwagę na definicję niepełnosprawności intelektualnej, jej założenia oraz podstawowe wymiary funkcjonowania osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną, a także starano się ocenić ich zgodność z postulatami zawartymi w społecznym modelu niepełnosprawności. W rezultacie przeprowadzonej analizy stwierdzono, iż położenie większego nacisku w koncepcji niepełnosprawności intelektualnej na współzależność między tym, jak jest postrzegana, i tym, kim staje się osoba z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną, sprzyjałoby w większym zakresie podkreśleniu roli otoczenia społecznego w jej rozwoju, a także zachęcało do udzielania wsparcia i utrwalało tendencje do postrzegania niepełnosprawności intelektualnej w wymiarze socjopedagogicznym.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to present contemporary research and theoretical positions regarding the sexuality of people with disabilities, which clearly shows that adults with intellectual disabilities have sexual needs and are able to lead relatively satisfactory partner and sexual life. The article also highlights the importance of sex education as a priority mission of contemporary special education. The scientific study presents the results of the KEGA No 119UK4/2011 project .
Celem tego artykułu jest przybliżenie współczesnych stanowisk badawczych i teoretycznych dotyczących seksualności osób niepełnosprawnych, z których jasno wynika, iż dorosłe osoby z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną mają seksualne potrzeby i w określonych warunkach są zdolne do prowadzenia względnie zadowalającego partnerskiego i seksualnego życia. W artykule podkreślono również wagę edukacji seksualnej, jako priorytetowej misji współczesnej pedagogiki specjalnej. Studium naukowe prezentuje wyniki projektu KEGA nr 119UK 4/2011.

This article presents an account of research based on individual in-depth interviews. It emphasizes the aspects of the functioning of people with impairments which are difficult to capture by carrying out quantitative analysis. This paper is aimed to describe selected factors that determine the activity of disabled people, in particular those which could be used in further, more precise studies of disability.
