The problem of the development of a human person and the whole mankind has a significant place in the post Vaticanum Secundum social teaching of the Catholic church. This year’s anniversary of two social encyclicals: Paul VI’s Populorum progressio (1967) and John Paul II’s Sollicitudo rei socialis (1987) indicates the need of undertaking theological and anthropological reflection upon the process of development. The Catholic social teaching placing a human person in the center of all social, political and economic processes evaluates the quality of development from the perspective of respecting human dignity and rights. Although the development issues have originated from social teaching of local churches of Africa and Latin America, thanks to the social encyclicals it took on a global dimension. The social teaching of the Catholic church by indicating the need of the integral development of a human person and the whole mankind, points out the problems of material, spiritual poverty and violation of human rights. Therefore, the teaching about development is an integral element of the preferential option for the poor in the ministry of the Catholic church.

The presented text aims to distinguish the understanding of the concept of salvation by two significant Christian scholars: John Paul II and Paul Tillich. They come from two separate Christian traditions: Catholicism and Lutheranism. The concept of salvation is so crucial that it is the essence of understanding Christianity and, if recognized as the goal of every human life, the effort of understanding it becomes even more important. An insight into the notion of salvation, based on the indication of similarities and differences in its understanding, makes it more comprehensible and accessible to every Christian.

Ziel des Artikels ist es, die Identität der Gegner des Paulus in den Kirchen Galatiens sowie der von ihnen verkündeten Thesen aufzuzeigen. Unbestritten ist, daß sie aus Kreisen judaisierender Judenchristen stammten. Sie waren mit dem paulinischen Evangelium nicht einverstanden und versuchten die Galater dazu zu bewegen, das jüdische Gesetz zu halten, denn erst dieses würde ihnen das Heil garantieren. Paulus, der entschieden gegen diese Auffassungen eintrat, hatte erkannt, daß dieser Streit das Wesen der christlichen Religion selbst betraf. Sein Brief stellt ein Zeugnis der Gefahr dar, die sich in die Kirchen Galatiens eingeschlichen hatte − eine völlige Mißachtung des Erlösungstodes Christi.

It is important to specify terms – the truth is conformity of a word to a thing or an event, whereas a lie is making the truth unavailable to someone who has the right to it. John Paul II promoted the essential truth that a man is God’s creation; God knows what is good for his creation; human person is God’s image, then should act in such a manner that the image is clear. Faith has moral dimension-it is moral dimension. It is the source of practical involvement which remains in harmony with faith. The principles of one’s conduct are God’s commandments, whereas individualistic ethics, practised in the spirit of illusory freedom, prevents us from discovering the only certain truth-God. Contemporary crisis of society is that faith is rejected and as a result there is breaking off the essential and constitutive bond between the truth and freedom. In economy we can see that the truth in one’s conduct cannot withstand the style of the present geared towards profit. It is proper that the Church supports profit but the profit cannot be the only regulator of a company’s life. There are still human and moral factors. Economic growth should respect human values. Freedom in the economic and social area cannot be torn out from the truth about a human being. The meeting of the Church and the workers’ movement in 1980 showed that it is possible to demand ethics in economy in the name of the truth of a human being-then the civilisation of love is created with its main principles: a person before a thing, more important to be than to have, ethics before technology, mercy before justice, defeat evil with good. Problems existing in this area cannot be disregarded. The matter is important and urging – otherwise, as Pope Leo XIII said in the Encyclical Rerum Novarum, delaying would make evil incurable.

The paper focuses on the contents of Józef Czapski’s programme article 'O Cézannie i świadomości malarskiej' [On Cézanne and painterly conscience] published by the Institute of Art Propaganda in Warsaw in 1937. The detailed analysis of the text firstly, indicates Czapski’s specific understanding of the oeuvre of the French painter in a wide context of European art history. Secondly, it reveals rhetoric background of the article seen within the frames of the Kapists’ massive campaign aiming at reassessment of Polish painting tradition in the 1930s. Therefore, the reading is not only a report on the contents of the text about Cézanne, with a special attention paid to dynamics of meanings that construct it, but also deals with the question of a characteristic strategy of affecting the reader. Within the paper the author also makes an attempt at finding Cézanne’s motifs in the self-portraits painted by Czapski. The inter-pictorial dialogue refers to a complex phenomena of pressure, which is experienced by artistic identity and personality in view of a suggestive and self-imposing model.

The article refers to very crucial element of the pontificate of the John Paul II, his engagement in Catholic Church matters in Africa, and his wider concern of African people. Before showing different forms of the engagement of the John Paul II, the situation of the contemporary Catholic Church in Africa was presented. The Pope expressed his interest on Africa and its citizens in many ways. During his pontificate he made 14 pilgrimages to the African continent (in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000) and visited 42 countries. On the international scene he was an advocate of African people and supported initiatives which could solve political, social and economic problems of the continent (especially military conflicts, hunger, diseases e.g. AIDS, economic injustice). In the end of article synthetic depiction of results of the engagement were characterized.

The purpose of this text is to reconstruct Paul Tillich’s thought concerning the contemporary issue resulting from the relation between theology and philosophy. The questions to be stated are: Is it possible to establish conditions for theology and philosophy to coexist? If so, where is their source? I am going to show the relation between philosophy and theology in the context of a seeking existence that happens to be a human being, with regards to God who answers human questions. In this paper I will try to present Tillich’s thought based on the hermeneutical way of understanding the symbol, which would make the Revelation being more available and comprehensible for humans. This would result as well in better and more aware understanding of what a human being really is.

In the teaching of John Paul II’s the need of solidarity globalization is particularly stressed out as well as that of humanization of globalization processes. With the aim of doing it, one should be guided by unchanging social values: the truth, freedom, justice, solidarity, subsidiarity, love. The globalization has two faces: ▪ the benefits which it brings to the world, individual countries and its main beneficiaries, that is international corporations. ▪ negative effects which the developing countries and all people of the world experience (climatic changes, emission of harmful substances, drug addiction, moral nihilism, gradual decrease of human importance). It happens that complex processes caused by economical globalization make their way towards changing a human being into an element of a market, a bartered good or a factor devoid of meaning for decisive choices. As a consequence, a person may feel annihilated by impersonal mechanisms on a world’s scale and may gradually lose his own identity and personal dignity.

The aim of the present article is to establish the meaning of ὤφθη + a dative of indirect object in the light of its usage in koine Greek in general and in the LXX and related Jewish literature. Such a thorough analysis of the syntagma reveals that it is not very suitable as a proof of the factuality of the appearances of the Risen Christ. In the light of the use of the formula in koine Greek it seems much more probable that its primary function in the context of 1 Cor 15,5-8 is to announce the salvific dimension of the event as the beginning of eschatological salvation and as the present warranty of the future fulfilment of the resurrection of (all) the dead.

This short paper tackles the much-discussed crux interpretum of 1 Cor 15:29. Biblical scholars have tended to analyse word for word the expression οἱ βαπτιζόμενοι ὑπὲρ τῶν νεκρῶν and present various hypotheses, with the idea favored by the scholarly majority being that of vicarious baptism for the dead. I propose a new reading of 1 Cor 15:29 in its literary and rhetorical context of 1 Cor 15:12–34. Here, what those who believe in Christ do (v. 29), what the apostles do (v. 30), and what Paul does (vv. 31–32), are put together as good practices which become incomprehensible if there is no resurrection of the dead. Vicarious baptism cannot be considered a good practice because it is at odds with Paul’s concept of baptism, and because it was later even considered heretical and aberrant. In this context, the paper proposes to read ὑπέρ with a sense of finality, i.e. “for/in view of,” and to see in ὑπὲρ τῶν νεκρῶν a brachylogy (as Paul employs elsewhere in his letters) for “for/in view of the resurrection of the dead.” Therefore in 1 Cor 15:29 Paul presents the positive example of the people who undergo baptism as a public manifestation of faith, in the hope of taking part in the final resurrection together with all the dead, especially with those who are “in Christ.” To the new reading corresponds this new translation: “Otherwise, what will they do those who have themselves baptised for/in view of (the resurrection of) the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then do they have themselves baptized for/in view of (the resurrection of) them?”

The subject of the article is the issue of human/non-human death, animal mourning, mimetic desire and death drive in the novel by Paul Auster, Timbuktu. The fate of Mr. Bones after Willy’s death reveals different kinds of interspecies relationships: from taking care of a stray dog to its adoption and changing it into an oedipal animal. The suicidal death of the main non-human character can be perceived as a desire to meet Willy again in the underworld (Timbuktu) an expression of longing for a lost friend, and the act of repetition of Willy’s (human) death, but also as a conscious choice of the dog.
Tematem artykułu jest problematyka ludzkiej/nie-ludzkiej śmierci, zwierzęcej żałoby, mimetycznego pragnienia oraz popędu śmierci w powieści Paula Austera, Timbuktu. Na szczególną uwagę zasługuje relacja między (człowiekiem) Willy’m G. Christmasem a Gnatem (psem), przedstawiona w kontekście koncepcji gatunków stowarzyszonych Donny Haraway. Losy Gnata po śmierci Willy’ego ukazują odmienne propozycje stosunków międzygatunkowych: od opieki nad psem bezpańskim po jego adopcję oraz wtłoczenie w schemat zwierzęcia edypalnego. Samobójcza śmierć głównego nie-ludzkiego bohatera może być odczytywana jako pragnienie ponownego spotkania z Willy’m w zaświatach (Timbuktu), wyraz tęsknoty za utraconym przyjacielem, akt-powtórzenie (ludzkiej) śmierci Willy’ego, ale też świadomy wybór psa.

Ausgegangen wird im Artikel von einer Umschreibung der absoluten und relativen Chronologie. Darauf folgt ein Versuch der Feststellung von zwei Daten, die von Seiten der römischen Geschichte als ziemlich sicher gelten (aus der Amtszeit des Prokonsul Gallio von Achaia und Festus in Caesarea). Der Vergleich mit Mitteilungen aus der Apostelgeschichte und Nachrichten von Paulus selbst in seinen Briefen führt dann folgerichtig zu Ergebnissen, die eine kleine temporale Biegsamkeit mit einschließen. Diese Methode nennt der Verf. „eine junktive Chronologie”.

Paul Valéry (1871-1945) was considered in the 1930s one of the greatest French poet and essayist. He was the author of the famous poems: La Jeune Parque (The Young Fate) and Le Cimetiere marin (The Graveyard by the Sea). Many times in different situations he spoke very highly of Poland and Poles. Wednesday, October 28th 1936, Valéry arrived in Warsaw. He delivered two lectures during his brief stay. They met with great interest, they were in the papers, they have been mentioned by Polish writers: Wacław Grubiński, Zofia Nałkowska, Tadeusz Breza. Also, Czesław Miłosz and Ludwik Hieronim Morstin have written about meetings with Paul Valéry. Poet`s visit, although very short, was a significant event in Polish cultural life.

Opis:
French philosopher Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) is best known as the co-founder of modern hermeneutics. Under this framework, he developed a practical philosophy (theory of action). Its applications can be found in his attitude to public and civic issues (e.g. expressed in skepticism to the course of events in May 1968 or protests against the worsening social inequalities), where there was always a religious theme, resulting from a strong Christian faith rooted in the Protestant profile. Ricoeur differentiated politics as classically understood politics as a space for joint action within a framework of policies rather than more contemporary views, where it is associated with gaining and securing power. He pointed to the need for dialogue and negotiations between the government and the social partners, trade unions and political adversaries. Political activity becomes similar to practical wisdom.
