Opis:
This paper describes a modular neural network (MNN) with fuzzy integration for the problem of signature recognition. Currently, biometric identification has gained a great deal of research interest within the pattern recognition community. For instance, many attempts have been made in order to automate the process of identifying a person’s handwritten signature; however this problem has proven to be a very difficult task. In this work, we propose a MNN that has three separate modules, each using different image features as input, these are: edges, wavelet coefficients, and the Hough transform matrix. Then, the outputs from each of these modules are combined using a Sugeno fuzzy integral and a fuzzy inference system. The experimental results obtained using a database of 30 individual’s shows that the modular architecture can achieve a very high 99.33% recognition accuracy with a test set of 150 images. Therefore, we conclude that the proposed architecture provides a suitable platform to build a signature recognition system. Furthermore we consider the verification of signatures as false acceptance, false rejection and error recognition of the MNN.

This paper presents an application of the Hough Transform to the tasks of learning and identifying irregular patterns in a computer vision system. The method presented is based on the Hough Transform with a parameter space defined by translation, rotation and scaling operations. A fundamental element of this method is the generalisation of the Hough Transform for grey-level and colour images. The technique may be used in a robotic system, identification system or for image analysis.

This paper addresses the issue how to strike a good balance between accuracy and compactness in classification systems - still an important question in machine learning and data mining. The fuzzy rule-based classification approach proposed in current paper exploits the method of rule granulation for error reduction and the method of rule consolidation for complexity reduction. The cooperative nature of those methods - the rules are split in a way that makes efficient rule consolidation feasible and rule consolidation itself is capable of further error reduction - is demonstrated in a number of experiments with nine benchmark classification problems. Further complexity reduction, if necessary, is provided by rule compression.

This paper describes a method for two-phase flow structures evaluation of gas-liquid mixture based on theoretical assumptions for the stereology in materials science. This assessment is based on the analysis of digital images, obtained with a high-speed camera. The bright field technique was used for process visualization. The images obtained during the visualisation were, in fact, projections of the structures. For the given recording conditions, the stereological analysis applied was based on the linear method and on the method of random and directed secants. The new methods of determining important parameters of two-phase flow were proposed on the basis of collected data. The parameters are as follows: the volume fraction, the interfacial area, the number of objects in one of the phases of the mixture and two other structural parameters of the selected two-phase fluid obtained from the analysis of the two-dimensional image (average length of chords for projected objects, average free distance for convex shapes from the projection).

The paper presents the results of the automatic classification of rock images, taken under an optical microscope under different lighting conditions and with different polarization angles. The classification was conducted with the use of four pattern recognition methods: nearest neighbor, k-nearest neighbors, nearest mode, and optimal spherical neighborhoods on thin sections of five selected rocks. During research the CIELAB color space and the 9D feature space were used. The results indicate that changing both lighting conditions and polarization angles results in worsening the classification outcome, although not substantially. Duduring the automatic classification of rocks photographed under different lighting and polarization conditions, the highest number of correctly classified rocks (97%) is given by the nearest neighbor method. The results show that the automatic classification of rocks is possible within a predefined group of rocks. The results also indicate the optimal spherical neighborhoods method to be the safest method out of those tested, which means that it returns the lowest number of incorrect classifications.

The estimation of the generalization error of a trained classifier by means of a test set is one of the oldest problems in pattern recognition and machine learning. Despite this problem has been addressed for several decades, it seems that the last word has not been written yet, because new proposals continue to appear in the literature. Our objective is to survey and compare old and new techniques, in terms of quality of the estimation, easiness of use, and rigorousness of the approach, so to understand if the new proposals represent an effective improvement on old ones.

Combining the outputs of multiple neural networks has been used in Ensemble architectures to improve the decision accuracy in many applications fields, including pattern recognition, in particular for the case of fingerprints. In this paper, we describe a set of experiments performed in order to find the optimal individual networks in terms of the architecture and training rule. In the second step, we used the fuzzy Sugeno Integral to integrate results of the ensemble neural networks. This method combines objective evidence in the form of the network's outputs, with subjective measures of their performance. In the third step, we used a Fuzzy Inference System for the decision process of finding the output of the ensemble neural networks, and finally a comparison of experimental results between Fuzzy Sugeno Integral and the Fuzzy Inference System are presented.

Information technology of the 20th and 21st centuries “opened the way” to the automatic assessment of anthropometric facial features, facial gestures and other characteristic behaviours. Recognition is a very complex technical problem with a signifi cant practical effect. There are dedicated applications for this purpose. The article presents face recognition algorithms for 2D images, for three-dimensional spaces, and methods using neural networks. Linear and nonlinear, local and global, and hybrid methods of facial recognition are presented. The study understands the strengths and weaknesses of the laws governing the use of face recognition technology and, if possible, analyses their effi ciency. The methodological review has been created in connection with the idea of the author’s own fast algorithms and facial recognition.

Artificial Immune Systems inspired by clonal selection principle (called clonal selection algorithms) have already been successfully applied to pattern recognition tasks. In this paper we present our implementation of one of them, called CLONCLAS, and discuss its behavior in application to recognition of a set of binary patterns. The algorithm performs process of learning based on a set of training data including patterns which belong to ten previously unknown classes and finally generates a group of classifiers which are able to assign the testing input patterns to appropriate classes. Our experiments were performed for a set of commonly known similarity measures of binary strings to select the most efficient of them. We also observed a phenomenon of transformation of memory contents in subsequent phases of iterated process of the system learning.

Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is an additive manufacturing process, in which the research has been increasing over the past few years to meet customer-specific requirements. Different parameters from the process and the machine components have been monitored in order to obtain vital information such as productivity of the machine and quality of the manufactured workpiece. The monitoring of parameters related to energy is also realized, but the utilisation of such data is usually performed for determining basic information, for instance, from energy consumption. By applying machine learning algorithms on these data, it is possible to identify not only the steps of the manufacturing process, but also its behaviour patterns. Along with these algorithms, evidences regarding the conditions of components and anomalies can be detected in the acquired data. The results can be used to point out the process errors and component faults and can be adopted to analyse the energy efficiency of the SLM process by comparing energy consumption of one single layer during the manufacturing of different components. Moreover, the state of the manufacturing process and the machine can be determined automatically and applied to predict failures in order to launch appropriate counter measures.

Image is a fundamental concept for the subject being presented. The word “image” has especially multiple meanings. This paper contains some connotations of the notion of image with common knowledge, philosophy, physics, physiology and psychology. As the general conclusion coming from the presented review is the approval of the conception of image as a contemporary mentality paradigm. Philosophers actually tested if the world without the image as a constructional element is possible and how it could look like, and if the image is possible to exist without its object. In the cognitive psychology image processing is interpreted depending on the position regarding the number of existing codes. This paper refers to the author’s opinion that content processing depends on the form, vocabulary and alphabet that are used to express this content. The specificity of visual image processing is characterized by multidimensionality, adaptivity, intermodality and elasticity. These notions are explained in the paper.

Purpose: Stock market participants use technical analysis to seek trends in stock price charts despite its doubtful efficiency. We tested whether technical analysis signals represent typical and common cognitive biases associated with the continuation or reversal of the trend. Methodology: We compared investors’ opinions about the predictive power of technical analysis signals grouped into five conditions: real technical analysis signals associated with trend continuation (real momentum signals) or trend reversal (real contrarian signals), fake momentum or fake contrarian signals, and fluctuation signals. Findings: Investors assigned larger predictive power to real and fake signals associated with trend continuation than to signals associated with trend reversal. Fake signals, which represented cognitive biases, elicited similar predictions about trend continuation or reversal to real technical analysis signals. Originality: Market players assess momentum signals to have greater predictive power than contrarian signals and neutral signals to have the least predictive power. These results are independent of whether technical analysis signals were well-known to investors or made up by experimenters. The hardwired propensity of our brains to detect patterns combined with the non-natural environment of the stock market creates the illusion of expertise that is not easy to dispel.

The problem of observation space reordering is presented as a novel approach to pattern recognition based on non-parametric, combinatorial statistical tests. It consists in linearly ordering the elements of a discrete multi-dimensional observation space along a curve such that elements belonging to different similarity classes are as close to each other as possible, the similarity classes are mutually separated, and the length of the curve is kept to minimum. The problem is NP-difficult and it is shown how its approximate solution can be reached by a series of transformations improving the initial lexicographic linear order of a discrete observation space. Recommendations are formulated for linear order improvement leading to a pattern recognition algorithm based on serial statistical test.

This paper presents a computer-based method for recognizing digital images of bacterial cells. It covers automatic recognition of twenty genera and species of bacteria chosen by the author whose original contribution to the work consisted in the decision to conduct the process of recognizing bacteria using the simultaneous analysis of the following physical features of bacterial cells: color, size, shape, number of clusters, cluster shape, as well as density and distribution of the cells. The proposed method may be also used to recognize the microorganisms other than bacteria. In addition, it does not require the use of any specialized equipment. The lack of demand for high infrastructural standards and complementarity with the hardware and software widens the scope of the method’s application in diagnostics, including microbiological diagnostics. The proposed method may be used to identify new genera and species of bacteria, but also other microorganisms that exhibit similar morphological characteristics.

Opis:
Nowadays, most techniques for evaluating rough metal surfaces are based on tactile or confocal measurement procedures. However, these technologies have disadvantages in respect to measuring speeds, resistance to vibration, impact and dust. In this paper we present a novel surface measurement approach, which uses the scattering light technology. Our approach enhances the state-of-the-art scattering light-based surface measurement methodology in both the detector setup and evaluation of the raw intensity values acquired by the scattered light device. The main goal in optimizing the measurement setup is to capture scattering parameters for rough surfaces in a range greater than 10 μm based on an enlarged detector array. Regarding the evaluation, we propose a pattern recognition approach which maps the reflection intensity I back to material structures and the tenpoint mean roughness Rz , the golden standard in tactile roughness characterization. Based on this approach, we are able to classify rough surface deviations like stripes using a simple but robust thresholding. In order to demonstrate the generality of our approach, we evaluate our approach using two rather different materials, i.e. brushed stainless steel and anodized aluminium.

Opis:
We consider the generalized Z^-norm optimization problem assuming that the joint probability distri-bution of random variables is unknown. The solution to the problem has, therefore, to be estimated from a sample. We examine a natural estimator and show its strong consistency and asymptotic normality under quite general assumptions. Certain discrimination and screening problems, formalized in decision- theoretical manner, can be solved using Z^-norm minimization procedures. We derive asymptotic expansions of risk corresponding to estimated solu-tions.

Opis:
This article describes the histograms and polarograms obtained from the different types of textures using BRVAL filters. Comparative analysis of the polarograms and histograms showed that BRVAL filters description for textures in a wide range of distances and the light does not depend by the researched factors, and the level of detail segments on polarograms are inversely proportional to the increasing the number of absolute zero tending picture elements.
