The aim of the paper is to investigate the effectiveness of the 18K380 steam turbine condenser air extraction system using hydro ejectors. Motivation for the analysis was a need of improvement of the energy conversion ratio of the power plant. To achieve this goal it was necessary to establish efficiency of each subsystem of the energy cycle. The air extraction system is not a highly power consuming system but it has great impact on the steam cycle efficiency by influence on the condensation temperature. The air extraction system effectiveness depends on a weather conditions, exactly on the ambient temperature, which raises the question whether it is worth to modernize the hydro ejectors or replace them by a centrifugal vacuum pumps. To establish the vacuum system effectiveness a new innovative mass flow measuring system has been implemented to measure an air-steam mixture flow and the fraction of the air mass in the mixture. The measuring system is based on a Venturi nozzle supplemented with a temperature drop during the mixture expansion.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of calculations related to the flow analysis of a tube bank taking into account the partial pressures of gases flowing through the condenser. Different mass share of the gas not condensing in the heat exchanger upstream to the first row of tubes and the partial pressures of water vapor and air have been taken into account. The value of the partial pressures of gases, pressures drop, temperature, velocity, Reynolds number, and air share in the subsequent rows of tubes have been calculated. This study is a basis for the analysis of heat exchange in the condenser considering the influence of the noncondensing gas. The increase in the share of air in the following rows of tubes results in an increase in the thermal resistance and condensation of increasingly lower mass of water vapor.

Opis:
The pressing need for reducing the global warming effects from the emission of greenhouse gases necessitates the use of renewable energy where possible. Solar distillers are devices with a promising future. In this work, an experimental setup (solar distiller) was constructed and equipped with a mirror, basin, glass cover, compressor, sensors and controllers to study the partial evacuation effects on different solar distillation parameters and the production capacity under the Jordanian climate. The test rig was tested for three different water levels (1, 2 and 3 cm), and four pressure values (1, 0.9, 0.8 and 0.7 atm) under the Jordanian climate. The detailed experimental results strongly correlate with the results previously published in literature. The modifications performed on the system doubled the previously attained efficiency. These improvements in the solar distiller will favor the application of the vacuum pressure principle in many different applications, such as the water extraction from the atmospheric air.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of hydrogen content, temperature, reaction time for the reduction of forging scale which is mainly composed of hematite (Fe2O3). All reductive reactions were performed over the temperature range of 700 to 1200°C as well as 0.1 to 1 atm of hydrogen partial pressures. The results showed that the mechanism for the reduction of iron oxides using hydrogen gas was not a simple process, but proceeded in multiple reduction stages thermodynamically. The iron oxide was almost completely reduced to metallic iron powder with 91 wt.% of iron content in the forging scale at 0.1 atm of hydrogen partial pressure. The content of iron was however found to be increased with increasing hydrogen partial pressure from 0.1 to 1 atm with regardless of temperatures. The metallic iron powder was obtained with the mean size of 100 μm and more porous structure was observed.

Diesel fuels currently constitute around 60–70% of the turnover of fuel bases in Poland. Diesel fuels are stored in vertical steel tanks with fixed roofs, which, according to applicable legal acts, do not require airtight sealing. This results in the emission of gases containing hydrocarbons to the atmosphere, which at high turnover of fuel bases generates the need to determine the concentration of hydrocarbons emitted to the atmosphere and to perform calculations of concentrations occurring at the boundary of the fuel base site. The article collects available literature data and presents the results of research on the emissions of hydrocarbons to the atmosphere that occur during handling and storage of diesel fuel in storage tanks, including the determination of the saturated vapor pressure of the hydrocarbon components of the tested diesel fuel depending on the temperature. The emissions tests were carried out by taking gas samples emitted during operations on diesel storage tanks. Analyzes of the gas samples supplied in gas-tight syringes were performed with SRI 8610C gas chromatograph equipped with a flame ionization detector (FID) and an alumina packed column. Diesel oil sample analysis was performed by gas chromatography using Shimadzu GC-2010 Plus chromatograph equipped with flame ionization detector (FID). ZB-5HT column (30 m × 0.25 mm × 0.25 µm) was used for the separation of the substances. Research has shown the amount of hydrocarbon emissions to the atmosphere depending on the type of loading operations, the degree of storage tank filling and oil temperature. The dependence of the concentration of hydrocarbons emitted from the storage tank depending on the degree of filling of the tank has been determined in the research. Results of calculations of diesel vapor pressure show convergence with most available literature data and measurement results. General design guidelines have been defined to determine the data necessary to calculate the level of hydrocarbon concentrations in atmospheric air. The research was aimed at creating the basis for the required environmental calculations, relevant in the absence of relevant literature data, necessary for the reliable determination of the amount of hydrocarbon emissions.

The pressure of wet water vapor inside a condenser has a great impact on the efficiency of thermal cycle. The value of this pressure depends on the mass share of inert gases (air). The knowledge of the spots where the air accumulates allows its effective extraction from the condenser, thus improving the conditions of condensation. The condensation of water vapor with the share of inert gas in a model tube bank of a condenser has been analyzed in this paper. The models include a static pressure loss of the water vapor/air mixture and the resultant changes in the water vapor parameters. The mass share of air in water vapor was calculated using the Dalton’s law. The model includes changes of flow and thermodynamic parameters based on the partial pressure of water vapor utilizing programmed water vapor tables. In the description of the conditions of condensation the Nusselts theory was applied. The model allows for a deterioration of the heat flow conditions resulting from the presence of air. The paper contains calculations of the water vapor flow with the initial mass share of air in the range 0.2 to 1%. The results of calculations clearly show a great impact of the share of air on the flow conditions and the deterioration of the conditions of condensation. The data obtained through the model for a given air/water vapor mixture velocity upstream of the tube bank allow for identification of the spots where the air accumulates.

This paper analyses and discusses experimental results of undrained triaxial tests. The tests were performed on non-cohesive partially saturated soil samples subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading. The tests were aimed at determining the influence of saturation degree on soil’s undrained response (shear strength, excess pore pressure generation). The saturation of samples was monitored by checking Skempton’s parameter B. Additionally, seismic P-wave velocity measurements were carried out on samples characterized by various degrees of saturation. The tests clearly showed that liquefaction may also take place in non-cohesive soils that are not fully saturated and that the liquefaction potential of such soils strongly depends on the B parameter.

The performance of a ZI engine is presented in the paper, as well as a project involving a device for applying a partial load in the performed examinations of a brake-chassis test bed. The device was prepared for an Opel Astra and enabled the determination of exterior characteristics of the engine for different values of the engine load. The indicating pressure sensor and the angle marker on the crankshaft allowed for the recording of the indicating pressure obtained at different values of the load. The analysis of heat evolution in the process of burning, based on the registered results of the measurements at the brake-chassis test bed, has also been included in the presentation.
